Expanding self-orthogonal codes over a ring $\Z_4$ to self-dual codes and unimodular lattices

Self-dual codes have been studied actively because they are connected with mathematical structures including block designs and lattices and have practical applications in quantum error-correcting codes and secret sharing schemes. Nevertheless, there has been less attention to construct self-dual codes from self-orthogonal codes with smaller dimensions. Hence, the main purpose of this paper is to propose a way to expand any self-orthogonal code over a ring $\Z_4$ to many self-dual codes over $\Z_4$. We show that all self-dual codes over $\Z_4$ of lengths $4$ to $8$ can be constructed this way. Furthermore, we have found five new self-dual codes over $\Z_4$ of lengths $27, 28, 29, 33,$ and $34$ with the highest Euclidean weight $12$. Moreover, using Construction $A$ applied to our new Euclidean-optimal self-dual codes over $\Z_4$, we have constructed a new odd extremal unimodular lattice in dimension 34 whose kissing number was not previously known.

Triorthogonal Codes and Self-dual Codes

Triorthogonal matrices were introduced in Quantum Information Theory in connection with distillation of magic states (Bravyi and Haah (2012)). We give an algorithm to construct binary triorthogonal matrices from binary self-dual codes. Further, we generalize to this setting the classical coding techniques of shortening and extending. We also give some simple propagation rules.

Some $3$-designs invariant under $2.PΣL(2,49).$

We construct a ternary [49,25,7] code from the row span of a Jacobsthal matrix. It is equivalent to a Generalized Quadratic Residue (GQR) code in the sense of van Lint and MacWilliams (1978). These codes are the abelian generalizations of the quadratic residue (QR) codes which are cyclic. The union of the [50,25,8] extension of the said code and its dual supports a 3-(50,14,1248) design. The automorphism group of the latter design is a double cover of the permutation part of the automorphism group of the [50,25,8] code, which is isomorphic to $PΣL(2,49).$ Other weights in this code, other GQR codes, and other QR codes yield other 3-designs by the same process. A simple group action argument is provided to explain this behaviour of isodual codes.

Some bounds on the cardinality of the $b$-symbol weight spectrum of codes

The size of the Hamming distance spectrum of a code has received great attention in recent research. The main objective of this paper is to extend these significant theories to the $b$-symbol distance spectrum. We examine this question for various types of codes, including unrestricted codes, additive codes, linear codes, and cyclic codes, successively. For the first three cases, we determine the maximum size of the $b$-symbol distance spectra of these codes smoothly. For the case of cyclic codes, we introduce three approaches to characterize the upper bound for the cardinality of the $b$-symbol weight spectrum of cyclic codes, namely the period distribution approach, the primitive idempotent approach, and the $b$-symbol weight formula approach. As two by-products of this paper, the maximum number of symplectic weights of linear codes is determined, and a basic inequality among the parameters $[n,k,d_H(\C)]_q$ of cyclic codes is provided.

An open problem and a conjecture on binary linear complementary pairs of codes

The existence of $q$-ary linear complementary pairs (LCPs) of codes with $q> 2$ has been completely characterized so far. This paper gives a characterization for the existence of binary LCPs of codes. As a result, we solve an open problem proposed by Carlet $et~al.$ (IEEE Trans. Inf. Theory 65(3): 1694-1704, 2019) and a conjecture proposed by Choi $et~al.$ (Cryptogr. Commun. 15(2): 469-486, 2023).

A tight upper bound on the number of non-zero weights of a quasi-cyclic code

Let $\mathcal{C}$ be a quasi-cyclic code of index $l(l\geq2)$. Let $G$ be the subgroup of the automorphism group of $\mathcal{C}$ generated by $ρ^l$ and the scalar multiplications of $\mathcal{C}$, where $ρ$ denotes the standard cyclic shift. In this paper, we find an explicit formula of orbits of $G$ on $\mathcal{C}\setminus \{\mathbf{0}\}$. Consequently, an explicit upper bound on the number of nonzero weights of $\mathcal{C}$ is immediately derived and a necessary and sufficient condition for codes meeting the bound is exhibited. If $\mathcal{C}$ is a one-generator quasi-cyclic code, a tighter upper bound on the number of nonzero weights of $\mathcal{C}$ is obtained by considering a larger automorphism subgroup which is generated by the multiplier, $ρ^l$ and the scalar multiplications of $\mathcal{C}$. In particular, we list some examples to show the bounds are tight. Our main result improves and generalizes some of the results in \cite{M2}.

Butson Hadamard matrices, bent sequences, and spherical codes

We explore a notion of bent sequence attached to the data consisting of an Hadamard matrix of order $n$ defined over the complex $q^{th}$ roots of unity, an eigenvalue of that matrix, and a Galois automorphism from the cyclotomic field of order $q.$ In particular we construct self-dual bent sequences for various $q\le 60$ and lengths $n\le 21.$ Computational construction methods comprise the resolution of polynomial systems by Groebner bases and eigenspace computations. Infinite families can be constructed from regular Hadamard matrices, Bush-type Hadamard matrices, and generalized Boolean bent functions. As an application, we estimate the covering radius of the code attached to that matrix over $\Z_q.$ We derive a lower bound on that quantity for the Chinese Euclidean metric when bent sequences exist. We give the Euclidean distance spectrum, and bound above the covering radius of an attached spherical code, depending on its strength as a spherical design.

The weight enumerator polynomials of the lifted codes of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes

Determining the weight distribution of a code is an old and fundamental topic in coding theory that has been thoroughly studied. In 1977, Helleseth, Kløve, and Mykkeltveit presented a weight enumerator polynomial of the lifted code over $\mathbb{F}_{q^\ell}$ of a $q$-ary linear code with significant combinatorial properties, which can determine the support weight distribution of this linear code. The Solomon-Stiffler codes are a family of famous Griesmer codes, which were proposed by Solomon and Stiffler in 1965. In this paper, we determine the weight enumerator polynomials of the lifted codes of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes using some combinatorial properties of subspaces. As a result, we determine the support weight distributions of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes. In particular, we determine the weight hierarchies of the projective Solomon-Stiffler codes.

A quaternary analogue of Tang-Ding codes

In a recent paper, Tang and Ding introduced a class of binary cyclic codes of rate close to one half with a designed lower bound on their minimum distance. The definition involves the base $2$ expansion of the integers in their defining set. In this paper we propose an analogue for quaternary codes. In addition, the performances of the subfield subcode and of the trace code (two binary cyclic codes) are investigated.

Federated cINN Clustering for Accurate Clustered Federated Learning

Federated Learning (FL) presents an innovative approach to privacy-preserving distributed machine learning and enables efficient crowd intelligence on a large scale. However, a significant challenge arises when coordinating FL with crowd intelligence which diverse client groups possess disparate objectives due to data heterogeneity or distinct tasks. To address this challenge, we propose the Federated cINN Clustering Algorithm (FCCA) to robustly cluster clients into different groups, avoiding mutual interference between clients with data heterogeneity, and thereby enhancing the performance of the global model. Specifically, FCCA utilizes a global encoder to transform each client's private data into multivariate Gaussian distributions. It then employs a generative model to learn encoded latent features through maximum likelihood estimation, which eases optimization and avoids mode collapse. Finally, the central server collects converged local models to approximate similarities between clients and thus partition them into distinct clusters. Extensive experimental results demonstrate FCCA's superiority over other state-of-the-art clustered federated learning algorithms, evaluated on various models and datasets. These results suggest that our approach has substantial potential to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of real-world federated learning tasks.

A family of diameter perfect constant-weight codes from Steiner systems

If $S$ is a transitive metric space, then $|C|\cdot|A| \le |S|$ for any distance-$d$ code $C$ and a set $A$, ``anticode'', of diameter less than $d$. For every Steiner S$(t,k,n)$ system $S$, we show the existence of a $q$-ary constant-weight code $C$ of length~$n$, weight~$k$ (or $n-k$), and distance $d=2k-t+1$ (respectively, $d=n-t+1$) and an anticode $A$ of diameter $d-1$ such that the pair $(C,A)$ attains the code--anticode bound and the supports of the codewords of $C$ are the blocks of $S$ (respectively, the complements of the blocks of $S$). We study the problem of estimating the minimum value of $q$ for which such a code exists, and find that minimum for small values of $t$. Keywords: diameter perfect codes, anticodes, constant-weight codes, code--anticode bound, Steiner systems.

On $q$-ary shortened-$1$-perfect-like codes

We study codes with parameters of $q$-ary shortened Hamming codes, i.e., $(n=(q^m-q)/(q-1), q^{n-m}, 3)_q$. Firstly, we prove the fact mentioned in 1998 by Brouwer et al. that such codes are optimal, generalizing it to a bound for multifold packings of radius-$1$ balls, with a corollary for multiple coverings. In particular, we show that the punctured Hamming code is an optimal $q$-fold packing with minimum distance $2$. Secondly, for every admissible length starting from $n=20$, we show the existence of $4$-ary codes with parameters of shortened $1$-perfect codes that cannot be obtained by shortening a $1$-perfect code. Keywords: Hamming graph, multifold packings, multiple coverings, perfect codes.

A new approach to the Kasami codes of type 2

The dual of the Kasami code of length $q^2-1$, with $q$ a power of $2$, is constructed by concatenating a cyclic MDS code of length $q+1$ over $F_q$ with a Simplex code of length $q-1$. This yields a new derivation of the weight distribution of the Kasami code, a new description of its coset graph, and a new proof that the Kasami code is completely regular. The automorphism groups of the Kasami code and the related $q$-ary MDS code are determined. New cyclic completely regular codes over finite fields a power of $2$, generalized Kasami codes, are constructed; they have coset graphs isomorphic to that of the Kasami codes. Another wide class of completely regular codes, including additive codes, as well as unrestricted codes, is obtained by combining cosets of the Kasami or generalized Kasami code.

Designs, permutations, and transitive groups

A notion of $t$-designs in the symmetric group on $n$ letters was introduced by Godsil in 1988. In particular $t$-transitive sets of permutations form a $t$-design. We derive special lower bounds for $t=1$ and $t=2$ by a power moment method. For general $n,t$ we give a %linear programming lower bound . For $n\ge 4$ and $t=2,$ this bound is strong enough to show a lower bound on the size of such $t$-designs of $n(n-1)\dots (n-t+1),$ which is best possible when sharply $t$-transitive sets of permutations exist. This shows, in particular, that tight $2$-designs do not exist.

Characterization and construction of optimal binary linear codes with one-dimensional hull

The hull of a linear code over finite fields is the intersection of the code and its dual, and linear codes with small hulls have applications in computational complexity and information protection. Linear codes with the smallest hull are LCD codes, which have been widely studied. Recently, several papers were devoted to related LCD codes over finite fields with size greater than 3 to linear codes with one-dimensional or higher dimensional hull. Therefore, an interesting and non-trivial problem is to study binary linear codes with one-dimensional hull with connection to binary LCD codes. The objective of this paper is to study some properties of binary linear codes with one-dimensional hull, and establish their relation with binary LCD codes. Some interesting inequalities are thus obtained. Using such a characterization, we study the largest minimum distance $d_{one}(n,k)$ among all binary linear $[n,k]$ codes with one-dimensional hull. We determine the largest minimum distances $d_{one}(n,n-k)$ for $ k\leq 5$ and $d_{one}(n,k)$ for $k\leq 4$ or $14\leq n\leq 24$. We partially determine the exact value of $d_{one}(n,k)$ for $k=5$ or $25\leq n\leq 30$.

A new method for solving the equation $x^d+(x+1)^d=b$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$ where $d=q^3+q^2+q-1$

In this paper, we give a new method answer to a recent conjecture proposed by Budaghyan, Calderini, Carlet, Davidova and Kaleyski about the equation $x^d+(x+1)^d=b$ in $\mathbb{F}_{q^4}$, where $n$ is a positive integer, $q=2^n$ and $d=q^3+q^2+q-1$. In particular, we directly determine the differential spectrum of this power function $x^d$ using methods different from those in the literature. Compared with the methods in the literature, our method is more direct and simple.

Characterization of Plotkin-optimal two-weight codes over finite chain rings and related applications

Few-weight codes over finite chain rings are associated with combinatorial objects such as strongly regular graphs (SRGs), strongly walk-regular graphs (SWRGs) and finite geometries, and are also widely used in data storage systems and secret sharing schemes. The first objective of this paper is to characterize all possible parameters of Plotkin-optimal two-homogeneous weight regular projective codes over finite chain rings, as well as their weight distributions. We show the existence of codes with these parameters by constructing an infinite family of two-homogeneous weight codes. The parameters of their Gray images have the same weight distribution as that of the two-weight codes of type SU1 in the sense of Calderbank and Kantor (Bull Lond Math Soc 18: 97-122, 1986). Further, we also construct three-homogeneous weight regular projective codes over finite chain rings combined with some known results. Finally, we study applications of our constructed codes in secret sharing schemes and graph theory. In particular, infinite families of SRGs and SWRGs with non-trivial parameters are obtained.

Quasi-cyclic perfect codes in Doob graphs and special partitions of Galois rings

The Galois ring GR$(4^Δ)$ is the residue ring $Z_4[x]/(h(x))$, where $h(x)$ is a basic primitive polynomial of degree $Δ$ over $Z_4$. For any odd $Δ$ larger than $1$, we construct a partition of GR$(4^Δ) \backslash \{0\}$ into $6$-subsets of type $\{a,b,-a-b,-a,-b,a+b\}$ and $3$-subsets of type $\{c,-c,2c\}$ such that the partition is invariant under the multiplication by a nonzero element of the Teichmuller set in GR$(4^Δ)$ and, if $Δ$ is not a multiple of $3$, under the action of the automorphism group of GR$(4^Δ)$. As a corollary, this implies the existence of quasi-cyclic additive $1$-perfect codes of index $(2^Δ-1)$ in $D((2^Δ-1)(2^Δ-2)/{6}, 2^Δ-1 )$ where $D(m,n)$ is the Doob metric scheme on $Z^{2m+n}$.
