Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST) Science: Surveying the distant Universe

During the most active period of star formation in galaxies, which occurs in the redshift range 1<z<3, strong bursts of star formation result in significant quantities of dust, which obscures new stars being formed as their UV/optical light is absorbed and then re-emitted in the infrared, which redshifts into the mm/sub-mm bands for these early times. To get a complete picture of the high-z galaxy population, we need to survey a large patch of the sky in the sub-mm with sufficient angular resolution to resolve all galaxies, but we also need the depth to fully sample their cosmic evolution, and therefore obtain their redshifts using direct mm spectroscopy with a very wide frequency coverage. This requires a large single-dish sub-mm telescope with fast mapping speeds at high sensitivity and angular resolution, a large bandwidth with good spectral resolution and multiplex spectroscopic capabilities. The proposed 50-m Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST) will deliver these specifications. We discuss how AtLAST allows us to study the whole population of high-z galaxies, including the dusty star-forming ones which can only be detected and studied in the sub-mm, and obtain a wealth of information for each of these up to z~7: gas content, cooling budget, star formation rate, dust mass, and dust temperature. We present worked examples of surveys that AtLAST can perform, both deep and wide, and also focused on galaxies in proto-clusters. In addition we show how such surveys with AtLAST can measure the growth rate and the Hubble constant with high accuracy, and demonstrate the power of the line-intensity mapping method in the mm/sub-mm wavebands to constrain the cosmic expansion history at high redshifts, as good examples of what can uniquely be done by AtLAST in this research field.

Cosmic Vine: A z=3.44 large-scale structure hosting massive quiescent galaxies

We report the discovery of a large-scale structure at z=3.44 revealed by JWST data in the Extended Groth Strip (EGS) field. This structure, called the Cosmic Vine, consists of 20 galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts at 3.43 70\%$). Comparisons with simulations suggest that the Cosmic Vine would form a cluster with halo mass $M_{\rm halo}>10^{14}M_\odot$ at z=0, and the two massive galaxies are likely forming the brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs). The results unambiguously reveal that massive quiescent galaxies can form in growing large-scale structures at z>3, thus disfavoring the environmental quenching mechanisms that require a virialized cluster core. Instead, as suggested by the interacting and bulge-dominated morphologies, the two galaxies are likely quenched by merger-triggered starburst or active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback before falling into a cluster core. Moreover, we found that the observed specific star formation rates of massive quiescent galaxies in z>3 dense environments are one to two orders of magnitude lower than that of the BCGs in the TNG300 simulation. This discrepancy potentially poses a challenge to the models of massive cluster galaxy formation. Future studies comparing a large sample with dedicated cluster simulations are required to solve the problem.

Torus counting and self-joinings of Kleinian groups

For any $d\geq 1$, we obtain counting and equidistribution results for tori with small volume for a class of $d$-dimensional torus packings, invariant under a self-joining $Γ_ρ<\prod_{i=1}^d\mathrm{PSL}_2(\mathbb{C})$ of a Kleinian group $Γ$ formed by a $d$-tuple of convex cocompact representations $ρ=(ρ_1, \cdots, ρ_d)$. More precisely, if $\mathcal P$ is a $Γ_ρ$-admissible $d$-dimensional torus packing, then for any bounded subset $E\subset \mathbb{C}^d$ with $\partial E$ contained in a proper real algebraic subvariety, we have $$\lim_{s\to 0} { s^{δ_{L^1}(ρ) }} \cdot \#\{T\in \mathcal{P}: \mathrm{Vol} (T)> s,\, T\cap E\neq \emptyset \}= c_{\mathcal P}\cdot ω_ρ (E\cap Λ_ρ).$$ Here $0<δ_{L^1}(ρ)\le 2/\sqrt d$ is the critical exponent of $Γ_ρ$ with respect to the $L^1$-metric on the product $\prod_{i=1}^d \mathbb{H}^3$, $Λ_ρ\subset (\mathbb{C}\cup\{\infty\})^d$ is the limit set of $Γ_ρ$, and $ω_ρ$ is a locally finite Borel measure on $\mathbb{C}^d\cap Λ_ρ$ which can be explicitly described. The class of admissible torus packings we consider arises naturally from the Teichmüller theory of Kleinian groups. Our work extends previous results of Oh-Shah on circle packings (i.e. one-dimensional torus packings) to $d$-torus packings.

Infinite volume and atoms at the bottom of the spectrum

Let $G$ be a higher rank simple real algebraic group, or more generally, any semisimple real algebraic group with no rank one factors and $X$ the associated Riemannian symmetric space. For any Zariski dense discrete subgroup $Γ<G$, we prove that $\operatorname{Vol}(Γ\backslash X)=\infty$ if and only if no positive Laplace eigenfunction belongs to $L^2(Γ\backslash X)$, or equivalently, the bottom of the $L^2$-spectrum is not an atom of the spectral measure of the negative Laplacian. This contrasts with the rank one situation where the square-integrability of the base eigenfunction is determined by the size of the critical exponent relative to the volume entropy of $X$.

MAGNIF: A Tentative Lensed Rotating Disk at $z=8.34$ detected by JWST NIRCam WFSS with Dynamical Forward Modeling

We report galaxy MACS0416-Y3 behind the lensing cluster MACSJ0416.1--2403 as a tentative rotating disk at $z=8.34$ detected through its [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission in JWST NIRCam wide-field slitless spectroscopic observations. The discovery is based on our new grism dynamical modeling methodology for JWST NIRCam slitless spectroscopy, using the data from ``Median-band Astrophysics with the Grism of NIRCam in Frontier Fields'' (MAGNIF), a JWST Cycle-2 program. The [OIII]$\lambda5007$ emission line morphology in grism data shows velocity offsets compared to the F480M direct imaging, suggestive of rotation. Assuming a geometrically thin disk model, we constrain the rotation velocity of $v_{\rm rot}=58^{+53}_{-35}$ km s$^{-1}$ via forward modeling of the two-dimensional (2D) spectrum. We obtain the kinematic ratio of $v_{\rm rot}/σ_v=1.6^{+1.9}_{-0.9}$, where $σ_v$ is the velocity dispersion, in line with a quasi-stable thin disk. The resulting dynamical mass is estimated to be $\log(M_{\rm dyn}/M_{\odot})=8.4^{+0.5}_{-0.7}$. If the rotation confirmed, our discovery suggests that rotating gaseous disks may have already existed within 600 million years after Big Bang.

Ergodic decompositions of geometric measures on Anosov homogeneous spaces

Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group and $Γ$ a Zariski dense Anosov subgroup of $G$ with respect to a minimal parabolic subgroup $P$. Let $N$ be the maximal horospherical subgroup of $G$ given by the unipotent radical of $P$. We describe the $N$-ergodic decompositions of all Burger-Roblin measures as well as the $A$-ergodic decompositions of all Bowen-Margulis-Sullivan measures on $Γ\backslash G$. As a consequence, we obtain the following refinement of the main result of [LO]: the space of all {\it non-trivial} $N$-invariant ergodic and $P^\circ$-quasi-invariant Radon measures on $Γ\backslash G$, up to constant multiples, is homeomorphic to ${\mathbb R}^{\text{rank}\,G-1}\times \{1, \cdots, k\}$ where $k$ is the number of $P^\circ$-minimal subsets in $Γ\backslash G$.

Characterizing CO Emitters in the SSA22-AzTEC26 Field

We report the physical characterization of four CO emitters detected near the bright submillimeter galaxy (SMG) SSA22-AzTEC26. We analyze the data from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillileter Array band 3, 4, and 7 observations of the SSA22-AzTEC26 field. In addition to the targeted SMG, we detect four line emitters with a signal-to-noise ratio $>5.2$ in the cube smoothed with 300 km s$^{-1}$ FWHM Gaussian filter. All four sources have NIR counterparts within 1$\arcsec$. We perform UV-to-FIR spectral energy distribution modeling to derive the photometric redshifts and physical properties. Based on the photometric redshifts, we reveal that two of them are CO(2-1) at redshifts of 1.113 and 1.146 and one is CO(3-2) at $z=2.124$. The three sources are massive galaxies with a stellar mass $\gtrsim10^{10.5}M_\odot$, but have different levels of star formation. Two lie within the scatter of the main sequence (MS) of star-forming galaxies at $z\sim1-2$, and the most massive galaxy lies significantly below the MS. However, all three sources have a gas fraction within the scatter of the MS scaling relation. This shows that a blind CO line search can detect massive galaxies with low specific star formation rates that still host large gas reservoirs and that it also complements targeted surveys, suggesting later gas acquisition and the need for other mechanisms in addition to gas consumption to suppress star formation.

Orbit closures of unipotent flows for hyperbolic manifolds with Fuchsian ends

We establish an analogue of Ratner's orbit closure theorem for any connected closed subgroup generated by unipotent elements in $\operatorname{SO}(d,1)$ acting on the space $Γ\backslash \operatorname{SO}(d,1)$, assuming that the associated hyperbolic manifold $M=Γ\backslash \mathbb H^d$ is a convex cocompact manifold with Fuchsian ends. For $d=3$, this was proved earlier by McMullen, Mohammadi and Oh. In a higher dimensional case, the possibility of accumulation on closed orbits of intermediate groups causes very serious obstacles, and surmounting these via the avoidance theorem (Theorem 7.13) is the heart of this paper. Our results imply the following: for any $k\ge 1$, (1) the closure of any $k$-horosphere in $M$ is a properly immersed submanifold; (2) the closure of any geodesic $(k+1)$-plane in $M$ is a properly immersed submanifold; (3) any infinite sequence of maximal properly immersed geodesic $(k+1)$-planes intersecting $\operatorname{core} M$ becomes dense in $M$.

An Atlas of Color-selected Quiescent Galaxies at $z>3$ in Public $JWST$ Fields

We present the results of a systematic search for candidate quiescent galaxies in the distant Universe in eleven $JWST$ fields with publicly available observations collected during the first three months of operations and covering an effective sky area of $\sim145$ arcmin$^2$. We homogeneously reduce the new $JWST$ data and combine them with existing observations from the $Hubble\,Space\,Telescope$. We select a robust sample of $\sim80$ candidate quiescent and quenching galaxies at $3 < z < 5$ using two methods: (1) based on their rest-frame $UVJ$ colors, and (2) a novel quantitative approach based on Gaussian Mixture Modeling of the $NUV-U$, $U-V$, and $V-J$ rest-frame color space, which is more sensitive to recently quenched objects. We measure comoving number densities of massive ($M_\star\geq 10^{10.6} M_\odot$) quiescent galaxies consistent with previous estimates relying on ground-based observations, after homogenizing the results in the literature with our mass and redshift intervals. However, we find significant field-to-field variations of the number densities up to a factor of $2-3$, highlighting the effect of cosmic variance and suggesting the presence of overdensities of red quiescent galaxies at $z>3$, as it could be expected for highly clustered massive systems. Importantly, $JWST$ enables the robust identification of quenching/quiescent galaxy candidates at lower masses and higher redshifts than before, challenging standard formation scenarios. All data products, including the literature compilation, are made publicly available.

Anosov groups: local mixing, counting, and equidistribution

Let $G$ be a connected semisimple real algebraic group, and $Γ<G$ be a Zariski dense Anosov subgroup with respect to a minimal parabolic subgroup. We describe the asymptotic behavior of matrix coefficients $\langle (\exp tv). f_1, f_2\rangle$ in $L^2(Γ\backslash G)$ as $t\to \infty$ for any $f_1, f_2\in C_c(Γ\backslash G)$ and any vector $v$ in the interior of the limit cone of $Γ$. These asymptotics involve higher rank analogues of Burger-Roblin measures which are introduced in this paper. As an application, for any affine symmetric subgroup $H$ of $G$, we obtain a bisector counting result for $Γ$-orbits with respect to the corresponding generalized Cartan decomposition of $G$. Moreover, we obtain analogues of the results of Duke-Rudnick-Sarnak and Eskin-McMullen for counting discrete $Γ$-orbits in affine symmetric spaces $H\backslash G$.

Horospherical invariant measures and a rank dichotomy for Anosov groups

Let $G=\prod_{i=1}^{r} G_i$ be a product of simple real algebraic groups of rank one and $Γ$ an Anosov subgroup of $G$ with respect to a minimal parabolic subgroup. For each $v$ in the interior of a positive Weyl chamber, let $\mathcal R_v\subsetΓ\backslash G$ denote the Borel subset of all points with recurrent $\exp (\mathbb R_+ v)$-orbits. For a maximal horospherical subgroup $N$ of $G$, we show that the $N$-action on ${\mathcal R}_v$ is uniquely ergodic if $r={rank}(G)\le 3$ and $v$ belongs to the interior of the limit cone of $Γ$, and that there exists no $N$-invariant {Radon} measure on $\mathcal R_v$ otherwise.

Invariant measures for horospherical actions and Anosov groups

Let $Γ$ be a Zariski dense Anosov subgroup of a connected semisimple real algebraic group $G$. For a maximal horospherical subgroup $N$ of $G$, we show that the space of all non-trivial $NM$-invariant ergodic and $A$-quasi-invariant Radon measures on $Γ\backslash G$, up to proportionality, is homeomorphic to ${\mathbb R}^{\text{rank}\,G-1}$, where $A$ is a maximal real split torus and $M$ is a maximal compact subgroup which normalizes $N$. One of the main ingredients is to establish the $NM$-ergodicity of all Burger-Roblin measures.

Uniqueness of conformal measures and local mixing for Anosov groups

In the late seventies, Sullivan showed that for a convex cocompact subgroup $Γ$ of $\operatorname{SO}^\circ(n,1)$ with critical exponent $δ>0$, any $Γ$-conformal measure on $\partial \mathbb{H}^n$ of dimension $δ$ is necessarily supported on the limit set $Λ$ and that the conformal measure of dimension $δ$ exists uniquely. We prove an analogue of this theorem for any Zariski dense Anosov subgroup of a connected semisimple real algebraic group $G$ of rank at most $3$. We also obtain the local mixing for generalized BMS measures on $Γ\backslash G$ including Haar measures.

A Massive Molecular Torus inside a Gas-Poor Cirnumnuclear Disk in the Radio Galaxy NGC 1052 Discovered with ALMA

We report ALMA observations of NGC 1052 to quest mass accretion in a gas-poor active galactic nucleus (AGN). We detected CO emission representing a rotating ring-like circumnuclear disk (CND) seen edge-on with the gas mass of $5.3 \times 10^{5}$ M$_{\odot}$. The CND has smaller gas mass than that in typical Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear star formation and is too gas-poor to drive mass accretion onto the central engine. The continuum emission casts molecular absorption features of CO, HCN, HCO$^+$, SO, SO$_2$, CS, CN, and H$_2$O, with H$^{13}$CN and HC$^{15}$N and vibrationally-excited (v$_2 = 1$) HCN and HCO$^+$. Broader absorption line widths than CND emission line widths imply presence of a geometrically thick molecular torus with a radius of $2.4 \pm 1.3$ pc and a thickness ratio of $0.7 \pm 0.3$. We estimate the H$_2$ column density of $(3.3 \pm 0.7) \times 10^{25}$ cm$^{-2}$ using H$^{12}$CN, H$^{13}$CN, and HCO$^{+}$ absorption features and adopting abundance ratio of $^{12}$C-to-$^{13}$C and a HCO$^{+}$-to-H$_2$, and derived the torus gas mass of $(1.3 \pm 0.3) \times 10^7$ M$_{\odot}$, which is $\sim 9$\% of the central black-hole mass. The molecular gas in the torus is clumpy with the estimated covering factor of $0.17^{+0.06}_{-0.03}$. The gas density of clumps inside the torus is inferred to be $(6.4 \pm 1.3) \times 10^7$ cm$^{-3}$, which meets the excitation conditions of H$_2$O maser. Specific angular momentum in the torus exceeds a flat-rotation curve extrapolated from that of the CND, indicating a Keplerian rotation inside a 14.4-pc sphere of influence.

Topological proof of Benoist-Quint's orbit closure theorem for SO(d,1)

We present a new proof of the following theorem of Benoist-Quint: Let $G:=SO^\circ(d,1)$, $d\ge 2$ and $Δ<G$ a cocompact lattice. Any orbit of a Zariski dense subgroup $Γ$ of $G$ is either finite or dense in $Δ\backslash G$. While Benoist and Quint's proof is based on the classification of stationary measures, our proof is topological, using ideas from the study of dynamics of unipotent flows on the infinite volume homogeneous space $Γ\backslash G$.

Detection of the Far-infrared [O III] and Dust Emission in a Galaxy at Redshift 8.312: Early Metal Enrichment in the Heart of the Reionization Era

We present the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) detection of the [O III] 88 $μ$m line and rest-frame 90 $μ$m dust continuum emission in a Y-dropout Lyman break galaxy (LBG), MACS0416_Y1, lying behind the Frontier Field cluster MACS J0416.1-2403. This [O III] detection confirms the LBG with a spectroscopic redshift of $z = 8.3118 \pm 0.0003$, making this object one of the furthest galaxies ever identified spectroscopically. The observed 850 $μ$m flux density of $137 \pm 26$ $μ$Jy corresponds to a de-lensed total infrared (IR) luminosity of $L_{\rm IR} = (1.7 \pm 0.3) \times 10^{11} L_{\odot}$ if assuming a dust temperature of $T_{\rm dust} = 50$ K and an emissivity index of $β= 1.5$, yielding a large dust mass of $4 \times 10^6 M_{\odot}$. The ultraviolet-to-far IR spectral energy distribution modeling where the [O III] emissivity model is incorporated suggests the presence of a young ($τ_{\rm age} \approx 4$ Myr), star-forming (SFR $\approx 60 M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$), moderately metal-polluted ($Z \approx 0.2 Z_{\odot}$) stellar component with a mass of $M_{\rm star} = 3 \times 10^8 M_{\odot}$. An analytic dust mass evolution model with a single episode of star-formation does not reproduce the metallicity and dust mass in $τ_{\rm age} \approx 4$ Myr, suggesting a pre-existing evolved stellar component with $M_{\rm star} \sim 3 \times 10^9 M_{\odot}$ and $τ_{\rm age} \sim 0.3$ Gyr as the origin of the dust mass.

Environmental impacts on molecular gas in protocluster galaxies at z~2

We present the results from ALMA CO(3-2) observations of 66 Halpha-selected galaxies in three protoclusters around radio galaxies, PKS1138-262 (z=2.16) and USS1558-003 (z=2.53), and 4C23.56 (z=2.49). The pointing areas have an overdensity of ~100 compared to a mean surface number density of galaxies in field environments. We detect CO emission line in 16 star-forming galaxies, including previously published six galaxies, to measure the molecular gas mass. In the stellar mass range of 10.5 11.0 are comparable in mass to the scaling relation, or smaller. Our results suggest that the environmental effects on gas properties are mass-dependent: in high-density environments, gas accretion through cosmic filaments is accelerated in less massive galaxies while this is suppressed in the most massive system.
