Antichiral hinge states in a higher-order photonic nodal ring semimetal

Antichiral states propagate in the same direction on opposite boundaries, defying the conventional constraint that boundary modes must cancel net chirality. Previously found antichiral states have been limited to first-order topological semimetals. However, antichiral hinge states, the antichiral counterpart of recently discovered higher-order chiral hinge states, remain elusive. Here, we report the observation of antichiral hinge states in a higher-order nodal-ring semimetal made of a three-dimensional gyromagnetic photonic crystal. Near-field scanning measurements reveal a pair of hinge states at two parallel one-dimensional boundaries propagating unidirectionally along the same direction, with robust transport against metallic scatterers. Their spatial positions can be reconfigured by adding or removing photonic layers. The additionally observed antichiral and drumhead surface states manifest a hierarchy of first- and second-order topological boundary states within a single photonic system. Our work extends antichiral states to higher-order topological semimetals and has potential applications in robust and reconfigurable photonic routing.

Space and space-time topologies in a type-II hyperbolic lattice

Recent breakthroughs in hyperbolic lattices have expanded the study of topological phases of matter from Euclidean to non-Euclidean spaces. However, prior work has mostly focused on spatial topological states at the single outer edge of type-I hyperbolic lattices. The dynamic transfer of hyperbolic topological states across multiple edges, as well as the emergence of spatiotemporal topological phenomena, remains largely unexplored. Here, we establish both spatial and spatiotemporal topologies in a newly discovered type-II hyperbolic lattice possessing outer and inner edges. Using electric circuits, we experimentally realize a type-II hyperbolic Chern insulator and directly observe degenerate chiral edge states of opposite chirality at its outer and inner edges. Furthermore, by coupling these counter-propagating chiral edge states, we demonstrate an anti-time-parity phase transition, enabling dynamic transfer between them in arbitrary proportions. Finally, we propose a novel paradigm for constructing a (2+1)-dimensional hyperbolic space-time crystal, which hosts an intertwined topology of spatial Chern and temporal winding numbers, resulting in a unique space-time topological string state. Our work expands the frontier of hyperbolic topological physics, paving the way for the spatiotemporal dynamic manipulation of hyperbolic topological states.

Testing holographic duality in hyperbolic lattices

The celebrated holographic duality posits a correspondence between a quantum gravity in a bulk spacetime and a quantum field theory (QFT) defined on its lower-dimensional boundary. This duality not only offers deep insights into the enigmatic nature of quantum gravity but also provides an efficient methodology for studying strongly correlated systems. However, despite its profound significance in modern physics, holographic duality remains a conjecture, and further experimental exploration is highly sought after. Here, we present the first experimental test of holographic duality between a three-dimensional bulk gravity and a two-dimensional boundary QFT using hyperbolic lattices. By experimentally measuring the classical scalar field propagator in hyperbolic circuits, we reproduce the equal-time two-point correlation function of the dual boundary conformal field theory (CFT), verifying its exponential dependence on the boundary separation and the conformal dimension-scalar mass relation. Furthermore, by leveraging the two-point correlation function, we reconstruct the entanglement entropy for a boundary CFT subsystem, confirming that it follows the Ryu-Takayanagi formula. These results constitute the first direct experimental evidence that quantum properties of the QFT can be holographically reproduced through its dual classical field in curved space. This heuristic experimental effort opens a new avenue for in-depth investigations on the holographic duality and extensive exploration of quantum-gravity-inspired phenomena in classical systems.
