Visualizing the interplay of dual electronic nematicities in kagome superconductors

Kagome superconductor AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A stands for K, Rb, and Cs) hosts a wealth of intertwined electronic orders driven by geometric frustration and electron correlations. Among them, the breaking of rotational and/or time-reversal symmetry, observed within the triple-$Q$ charge density wave (CDW) phase yet exhibiting a more complex temperature dependence, remains a central puzzle. Here, by using scanning tunneling microscopy to study the electronic structures of CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ as a function of temperature and Ti doping, we disentangle the interrelation between two distinct nematic order parameters, one associated with the CDW and the other manifested as $C_2$ distortion of the V-$d_{x^{2}-y^{2}}$ Fermi pockets without breaking transition symmetry. The latter persists to high doping levels and high temperatures where the long-range CDW is fully suppressed. Moreover, its nematic director is oriented in a lattice direction distinct from that of the CDW-induced nematicity at intermediate doping, and eventually aligns with the strong nematic CDW order in the pristine compound where the quasiparticles of vanadium orbitals become coherent below a lower characteristic temperature. These observations, combined with Ginzburg-Landau analysis, reveal a rich interplay between two nematic orders that can be assigned to distinct kagome-lattice orbitals. Our results shed new light on the enigmatic intertwined orders in this family and establish a rare material platform in which dual nematic orders coexist and couple to give rise to unusual correlated phenomena.

MedMimic: Physician-Inspired Multimodal Fusion for Early Diagnosis of Fever of Unknown Origin

Fever of unknown origin FUO remains a diagnostic challenge. MedMimic is introduced as a multimodal framework inspired by real-world diagnostic processes. It uses pretrained models such as DINOv2, Vision Transformer, and ResNet-18 to convert high-dimensional 18F-FDG PET/CT imaging into low-dimensional, semantically meaningful features. A learnable self-attention-based fusion network then integrates these imaging features with clinical data for classification. Using 416 FUO patient cases from Sichuan University West China Hospital from 2017 to 2023, the multimodal fusion classification network MFCN achieved macro-AUROC scores ranging from 0.8654 to 0.9291 across seven tasks, outperforming conventional machine learning and single-modality deep learning methods. Ablation studies and five-fold cross-validation further validated its effectiveness. By combining the strengths of pretrained large models and deep learning, MedMimic offers a promising solution for disease classification.

EvAlignUX: Advancing UX Evaluation through LLM-Supported Metrics Exploration

Evaluating UX in the context of AI's complexity, unpredictability, and generative nature presents unique challenges. How can we support HCI researchers to create comprehensive UX evaluation plans? In this paper, we introduce EvAlignUX, a system powered by large language models and grounded in scientific literature, designed to help HCI researchers explore evaluation metrics and their relationship to research outcomes. A user study with 19 HCI scholars showed that EvAlignUX improved the perceived quality and confidence in UX evaluation plans while prompting deeper consideration of research impact and risks. The system enhanced participants' thought processes, leading to the creation of a ``UX Question Bank'' to guide UX evaluation development. Findings also highlight how researchers' backgrounds influence their inspiration and concerns about AI over-reliance, pointing to future research on AI's role in fostering critical thinking. In a world where experience defines impact, we discuss the importance of shifting UX evaluation from a ``method-centric'' to a ``mindset-centric'' approach as the key to meaningful and lasting design evaluation.
