EPViSA: Efficient Auction Design for Real-time Physical-Virtual Synchronization in the Metaverse

Metaverse can obscure the boundary between the physical and virtual worlds. Specifically, for the Metaverse in vehicular networks, i.e., the vehicular Metaverse, vehicles are no longer isolated physical spaces but interfaces that extend the virtual worlds to the physical world. Accessing the Metaverse via autonomous vehicles (AVs), drivers and passengers can immerse in and interact with 3D virtual objects overlaying views of streets on head-up displays (HUD) via augmented reality (AR). The seamless, immersive, and interactive experience rather relies on real-time multi-dimensional data synchronization between physical entities, i.e., AVs, and virtual entities, i.e., Metaverse billboard providers (MBPs). However, mechanisms to allocate and match synchronizing AV and MBP pairs to roadside units (RSUs) in a synchronization service market, which consists of the physical and virtual submarkets, are vulnerable to adverse selection. In this paper, we propose an enhanced second-score auction-based mechanism, named EPViSA, to allocate physical and virtual entities in the synchronization service market of the vehicular Metaverse. The EPViSA mechanism can determine synchronizing AV and MBP pairs simultaneously while protecting participants from adverse selection and thus achieving high total social welfare. We propose a synchronization scoring rule to eliminate the external effects from the virtual submarkets. Then, a price scaling factor is introduced to enhance the allocation of synchronizing virtual entities in the virtual submarkets. Finally, rigorous analysis and extensive experimental results demonstrate that EPViSA can achieve at least 96\% of the social welfare compared to the omniscient benchmark while ensuring strategy-proof and adverse selection free through a simulation testbed.

Learning-based Sustainable Multi-User Computation Offloading for Mobile Edge-Quantum Computing

In this paper, a novel paradigm of mobile edge-quantum computing (MEQC) is proposed, which brings quantum computing capacities to mobile edge networks that are closer to mobile users (i.e., edge devices). First, we propose an MEQC system model where mobile users can offload computational tasks to scalable quantum computers via edge servers with cryogenic components and fault-tolerant schemes. Second, we show that it is NP-hard to obtain a centralized solution to the partial offloading problem in MEQC in terms of the optimal latency and energy cost of classical and quantum computing. Third, we propose a multi-agent hybrid discrete-continuous deep reinforcement learning using proximal policy optimization to learn the long-term sustainable offloading strategy without prior knowledge. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can reduce at least 30% of the cost compared with the existing baseline solutions under different system settings.

Holographic-Type Communication for Digital Twin: A Learning-based Auction Approach

Digital Twin (DT) technologies, which aim to build digital replicas of physical entities, are the key to providing efficient, concurrent simulation and analysis of real-world objects. In displaying DTs, Holographic-Type Communication (HTC), which supports the transmission of holographic data such as Light Field (LF), can provide an immersive way for users to interact with Holographic DTs (HDT). However, it is challenging to effectively allocate interactive and resource-intensive HDT services among HDT users and providers. In this paper, we integrate the paradigms of HTC and DT to form a HTC for DT system, design a marketplace for HDT services where HDT users' and providers' prices are evaluated by their valuation functions, and propose an auction-based mechanism to match HDT services using a learning-based Double Dutch Auction (DDA). Specifically, we apply DDA and train an agent acting as the auctioneer to adjust the auction clock dynamically using Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL), aiming to achieve the best market efficiency. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed learning-based auctioneer can achieve near-optimal social welfare at halved auction information exchange cost of the baseline method.

Privacy-preserving Intelligent Resource Allocation for Federated Edge Learning in Quantum Internet

Federated edge learning (FEL) is a promising paradigm of distributed machine learning that can preserve data privacy while training the global model collaboratively. However, FEL is still facing model confidentiality issues due to eavesdropping risks of exchanging cryptographic keys through traditional encryption schemes. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a hierarchical architecture for quantum-secured FEL systems with ideal security based on the quantum key distribution (QKD) to facilitate public key and model encryption against eavesdropping attacks. Specifically, we propose a stochastic resource allocation model for efficient QKD to encrypt FEL keys and models. In FEL systems, remote FEL workers are connected to cluster heads via quantum-secured channels to train an aggregated global model collaboratively. However, due to the unpredictable number of workers at each location, the demand for secret-key rates to support secure model transmission to the server is unpredictable. The proposed systems need to efficiently allocate limited QKD resources (i.e., wavelengths) such that the total cost is minimized in the presence of stochastic demand by formulating the optimization problem for the proposed architecture as a stochastic programming model. To this end, we propose a federated reinforcement learning-based resource allocation scheme to solve the proposed model without complete state information. The proposed scheme enables QKD managers and controllers to train a global QKD resource allocation policy while keeping their private experiences local. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed schemes can successfully achieve the cost-minimizing objective under uncertain demand while improving the training efficiency by about 50\% compared to state-of-the-art schemes.

Cooperative Resource Management in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) Networks for Semantic Communication

Increasing privacy and security concerns in intelligence-native 6G networks require quantum key distribution-secured semantic information communication (QKD-SIC). In QKD-SIC systems, edge devices connected via quantum channels can efficiently encrypt semantic information from the semantic source, and securely transmit the encrypted semantic information to the semantic destination. In this paper, we consider an efficient resource (i.e., QKD and KM wavelengths) sharing problem to support QKD-SIC systems under the uncertainty of semantic information generated by edge devices. In such a system, QKD service providers offer QKD services with different subscription options to the edge devices. As such, to reduce the cost for the edge device users, we propose a QKD resource management framework for the edge devices communicating semantic information. The framework is based on a two-stage stochastic optimization model to achieve optimal QKD deployment. Moreover, to reduce the deployment cost of QKD service providers, QKD resources in the proposed framework can be utilized based on efficient QKD-SIC resource management, including semantic information transmission among edge devices, secret-key provisioning, and cooperation formation among QKD service providers. In detail, the formulated two-stage stochastic optimization model can achieve the optimal QKD-SIC resource deployment while meeting the secret-key requirements for semantic information transmission of edge devices. Moreover, to share the cost of the QKD resource pool among cooperative QKD service providers forming a coalition in a fair and interpretable manner, the proposed framework leverages the concept of Shapley value from cooperative game theory as a solution. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework can reduce the deployment cost by about 40% compared with existing non-cooperative baselines.

Optimal Stochastic Resource Allocation for Distributed Quantum Computing

With the advent of interconnected quantum computers, i.e., distributed quantum computing (DQC), multiple quantum computers can now collaborate via quantum networks to perform massively complex computational tasks. However, DQC faces problems sharing quantum information because it cannot be cloned or duplicated between quantum computers. Thanks to advanced quantum mechanics, quantum computers can teleport quantum information across quantum networks. However, challenges to utilizing efficiently quantum resources, e.g., quantum computers and quantum channels, arise in DQC due to their capabilities and properties, such as uncertain qubit fidelity and quantum channel noise. In this paper, we propose a resource allocation scheme for DQC based on stochastic programming to minimize the total deployment cost for quantum resources. Essentially, the two-stage stochastic programming model is formulated to handle the uncertainty of quantum computing demands, computing power, and fidelity in quantum networks. The performance evaluation demonstrates the effectiveness and ability of the proposed scheme to balance the utilization of quantum computers and on-demand quantum computers while minimizing the overall cost of provisioning under uncertainty.

DQC$^2$O: Distributed Quantum Computing for Collaborative Optimization in Future Networks

With the advantages of high-speed parallel processing, quantum computers can efficiently solve large-scale complex optimization problems in future networks. However, due to the uncertain qubit fidelity and quantum channel noise, distributed quantum computing which relies on quantum networks connected through entanglement faces a lot of challenges for exchanging information across quantum computers. In this paper, we propose an adaptive distributed quantum computing approach to manage quantum computers and quantum channels for solving optimization tasks in future networks. Firstly, we describe the fundamentals of quantum computing and its distributed concept in quantum networks. Secondly, to address the uncertainty of future demands of collaborative optimization tasks and instability over quantum networks, we propose a quantum resource allocation scheme based on stochastic programming for minimizing quantum resource consumption. Finally, based on the proposed approach, we discuss the potential applications for collaborative optimization in future networks, such as smart grid management, IoT cooperation, and UAV trajectory planning. Promising research directions that can lead to the design and implementation of future distributed quantum computing frameworks are also highlighted.

Adaptive Resource Allocation in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) for Federated Learning

Increasing privacy and security concerns in intelligence-native 6G networks require quantum key distribution-secured federated learning (QKD-FL), in which data owners connected via quantum channels can train an FL global model collaboratively without exposing their local datasets. To facilitate QKD-FL, the architectural design and routing management framework are essential. However, effective implementation is still lacking. To this end, we propose a hierarchical architecture for QKD-FL systems in which QKD resources (i.e., wavelengths) and routing are jointly optimized for FL applications. In particular, we focus on adaptive QKD resource allocation and routing for FL workers to minimize the deployment cost of QKD nodes under various uncertainties, including security requirements. The experimental results show that the proposed architecture and the resource allocation and routing model can reduce the deployment cost by 7.72\% compared to the CO-QBN algorithm.

A Full Dive into Realizing the Edge-enabled Metaverse: Visions, Enabling Technologies, and Challenges

Dubbed "the successor to the mobile Internet", the concept of the Metaverse has grown in popularity. While there exist lite versions of the Metaverse today, they are still far from realizing the full vision of an immersive, embodied, and interoperable Metaverse. Without addressing the issues of implementation from the communication and networking, as well as computation perspectives, the Metaverse is difficult to succeed the Internet, especially in terms of its accessibility to billions of users today. In this survey, we focus on the edge-enabled Metaverse to realize its ultimate vision. We first provide readers with a succinct tutorial of the Metaverse, an introduction to the architecture, as well as current developments. To enable ubiquitous, seamless, and embodied access to the Metaverse, we discuss the communication and networking challenges and survey cutting-edge solutions and concepts that leverage next-generation communication systems for users to immerse as and interact with embodied avatars in the Metaverse. Moreover, given the high computation costs required, e.g., to render 3D virtual worlds and run data-hungry artificial intelligence-driven avatars, we discuss the computation challenges and cloud-edge-end computation framework-driven solutions to realize the Metaverse on resource-constrained edge devices. Next, we explore how blockchain technologies can aid in the interoperable development of the Metaverse, not just in terms of empowering the economic circulation of virtual user-generated content but also to manage physical edge resources in a decentralized, transparent, and immutable manner. Finally, we discuss the future research directions towards realizing the true vision of the edge-enabled Metaverse.

Resource Allocation in Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) for Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks

Space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN) are one of the most promising advanced paradigms in the sixth generation (6G) communication. SAGIN can support high data rates, low latency, and seamless network coverage for interconnected applications and services. However, communications in SAGIN are facing tremendous security threats from the ever-increasing capacity of quantum computers. Fortunately, quantum key distribution (QKD) for establishing secure communications in SAGIN, i.e., QKD over SAGIN, can provide information-theoretic security. To minimize the QKD deployment cost in SAGIN with heterogeneous nodes, in this paper, we propose a resource allocation scheme for QKD over SAGIN using stochastic programming. The proposed scheme is formulated via two-stage stochastic programming (SP), while considering uncertainties such as security requirements and weather conditions. Under extensive experiments, the results clearly show that the proposed scheme can achieve the optimal deployment cost under various security requirements and unpredictable weather conditions.

Quantum-Secured Space-Air-Ground Integrated Networks: Concept, Framework, and Case Study

In the upcoming 6G era, existing terrestrial networks have evolved toward space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN), providing ultra-high data rates, seamless network coverage, and ubiquitous intelligence for communications of applications and services. However, conventional communications in SAGIN still face data confidentiality issues. Fortunately, the concept of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) over SAGIN is able to provide information-theoretic security for secure communications in SAGIN with quantum cryptography. Therefore, in this paper, we propose the quantum-secured SAGIN which is feasible to achieve proven secure communications using quantum mechanics to protect data channels between space, air, and ground nodes. Moreover, we propose a universal QKD service provisioning framework to minimize the cost of QKD services under the uncertainty and dynamics of communications in quantum-secured SAGIN. In this framework, fiber-based QKD services are deployed in passive optical networks with the advantages of low loss and high stability. Moreover, the widely covered and flexible satellite- and UAV-based QKD services are provisioned as a supplement during the real-time data transmission phase. Finally, to examine the effectiveness of the proposed concept and framework, a case study of quantum-secured SAGIN in the Metaverse is conducted where uncertain and dynamic factors of the secure communications in Metaverse applications are effectively resolved in the proposed framework.

Secure and Reliable Transfer Learning Framework for 6G-enabled Internet of Vehicles

In the coming 6G era, Internet of Vehicles (IoV) has been evolving towards 6G-enabled IoV with super-high data rate, seamless networking coverage, and ubiquitous intelligence by Artificial Intelligence (AI). Transfer Learning (TL) has great potential to empower promising 6G-enabled IoV, such as smart driving assistance, with its outstanding features including enhancing quality and quantity of training data, speeding up learning processes and reducing computing demands. Although TL had been widely adopted in wireless applications (e.g., spectrum management and caching), its reliability and security in 6G-enabled IoV were still not well investigated. For instance, malicious vehicles in source domains may transfer and share untrustworthy models (i.e., knowledge) about connection availability to target domains, thus adversely affecting the performance of learning processes. Therefore, it is important to select and also incentivize trustworthy vehicles to participate in TL. In this article, we first introduce the integration of TL and 6G-enbaled IoV and provide TL applications for 6G-enabled IoV. We then design a secure and reliable transfer learning framework by using reputation to evaluate the reliability of pre-trained models and utilizing the consortium blockchain to achieve secure and efficient decentralized reputation management. Moreover, a deep learning-based auction scheme for the TL model market is designed to motivate high-reputation vehicles to participate in model sharing. Finally, the simulation results demonstrate that the proposed framework is secure and reliable with well-design incentives for TL in 6G-enabled IoV.

Wireless Edge-Empowered Metaverse: A Learning-Based Incentive Mechanism for Virtual Reality

The Metaverse is regarded as the next-generation Internet paradigm that allows humans to play, work, and socialize in an alternative virtual world with immersive experience, for instance, via head-mounted display for Virtual Reality (VR) rendering. With the help of ubiquitous wireless connections and powerful edge computing technologies, VR users in wireless edge-empowered Metaverse can immerse in the virtual through the access of VR services offered by different providers. However, VR applications are computation- and communication-intensive. The VR service providers (SPs) have to optimize the VR service delivery efficiently and economically given their limited communication and computation resources. An incentive mechanism can be thus applied as an effective tool for managing VR services between providers and users. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a learning-based Incentive Mechanism framework for VR services in the Metaverse. First, we propose the quality of perception as the metric for VR users immersing in the virtual world. Second, for quick trading of VR services between VR users (i.e., buyers) and VR SPs (i.e., sellers), we design a double Dutch auction mechanism to determine optimal pricing and allocation rules in this market. Third, for auction communication reduction, we design a deep reinforcement learning-based auctioneer to accelerate this auction process. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed framework can achieve near-optimal social welfare while reducing at least half of the auction information exchange cost than baseline methods.
