Legendrian families of lines on nilpotent orbit closures

Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a complex semisimple Lie algebra, and $\overline{Z}$ a nilpotent orbit closure in the projectivization $\mathbb{P}(\mathfrak{g})$. We investigate the space of tangent directions of lines on $\overline{Z}$ passing through a general point $z$, denoted by $F(\overline{Z},\,z)$. We first prove that every irreducible component of $F(\overline{Z},\,z)$ is an integral subvariety of the contact hyperplane in the projectivized tangent space. Next, we study Legendrian components of $F(\overline{Z},\,z)$ in two cases: the case where $\overline{Z}$ admits a Springer resolution; the case where $\overline{Z}$ is square-zero in a projectivized simple Lie algebra of classical type. As an application, two corollaries are presented: a characterization of Richardson orbits among square-zero orbits in terms of $F(\overline{Z},\,z)$; a description of $F(\overline{Z},\,z)$ for $\overline{Z}$ arising from stratified Mukai flops associated to irreducible Hermitian symmetric spaces.

Constructing a Mock Galaxy Catalog for the All-sky SPECtroscopic Survey of Nearby Galaxies (A-SPEC) Using the Machine-assisted Semi-Simulation Model

We present a methodology for constructing a mock galaxy catalog for the All-sky SPECtroscopic survey of nearby galaxies (A-SPEC) using the Machine-assisted Semi-Simulation Model. The model is trained on the cosmological magnetohydrodynamical simulation IllustrisTNG to predict baryonic properties of subhalos from dark-matter-only features and is applied to our own N-body simulation tailored to satisfy the requirements of A-SPEC. We have improved the model's accuracy by introducing additional features such as subhalo anisotropy parameters and modified definitions of the subhalo environment, which result in the coefficient of determination R^2=0.96, 0.90, 0.70, 0.79 for stellar mass, gas mass, star formation rate, and gas metallicity, respectively. The resulting mock galaxies reproduce the luminosity-dependent clustering of the target galaxies when tuned to match the number density. We discuss avenues for further improvement, including the role of environment in the predictions. We release the mock galaxy catalog with the baryonic properties predicted from the model.

Automorphism groups of toroidal horospherical varieties

We establish a structure theorem for the connected automorphism groups of smooth complete toroidal horospherical varieties, that is, toric fibrations over rational homogeneous spaces. The key ingredient is a characterization of the Demazure roots of toric fibers that extend to the total space. In particular, we provide a criterion for the reductivity of the connected automorphism groups of such varieties. As an application, we prove the K-unstability of certain $\mathbb{P}^1$-bundles over rational homogeneous spaces.

A New Collision Avoidance Fiber Assignment Algorithm for Robotic Fiber Positioners in Multi-Object Spectroscopy

We present a new fiber assignment algorithm for a robotic fiber positioner system in multi-object spectroscopy. Modern fiber positioner systems typically have overlapping patrol regions, resulting in the number of observable targets being highly dependent on the fiber assignment scheme. To maximize observable targets without fiber collisions, the algorithm proceeds in three steps. First, it assigns the maximum number of targets for a given field of view without considering any collisions between fiber positioners. Then, the fibers in collision are grouped, and the algorithm finds the optimal solution resolving the collision problem within each group. We compare the results from this new algorithm with those from a simple algorithm that assigns targets in descending order of their rank by considering collisions. As a result, we could increase the overall completeness of target assignments by 10% with this new algorithm in comparison with the case using the simple algorithm in a field with 150 fibers. Our new algorithm is designed for the All-sky SPECtroscopic survey of nearby galaxies (A-SPEC) based on the K-SPEC spectrograph system, but can also be applied to similar fiber-based systems with heavily overlapping fiber positioners.

Local structure of the Hilbert scheme of conics in quintic del Pezzo varieties

Let $X$ be the quintic del Pezzo $4$-fold. It is very well-known that $X$ is realized by a smooth linear section of Grassmannian $\mathrm{Gr}(2,5)$. In this paper, we prove that the Hilbert scheme of conics in $X$ is a smooth variety of dimension $7$ by using a torus action on $X$, which provides a more direct proof about the first named author's previous result.

Algebraic hyperbolicity of adjoint linear systems on spherical varieties

Moraga and Yeong conjectured that for a smooth complex projective variety $X$ of dimension $n$, an ample line bundle $A$ on $X$ and an integer $m \ge 3 n + 1$, very general elements of the adjoint linear system $|\omega_{X} \otimes A^{\otimes m}|$ are algebraically hyperbolic. We prove the conjecture for spherical varieties with smooth orbit closures. As a corollary, we conclude that the conjecture holds for horospherical varieties, and for toroidal spherical varieties. Furthermore, for any spherical variety, we show that the conjecture holds modulo the complement of an open dense orbit.

Classification of Equivariant Legendrian Embeddings of Rational Homogeneous Spaces into Nilpotent Orbits

For a complex semi-simple Lie algebra, every nilpotent orbit in its projectivization comes with a complex contact structure. For each nilpotent orbit, we classify projective Legendrian subvarieties that are homogeneous under the actions of their stabilizers in the adjoint group. In particular, we present a classification of equivariant Legendrian embeddings of rational homogeneous spaces into adjoint varieties.

Searching for Dark Galaxies with HI detection from the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey

We present a catalog of 142 dark galaxy candidates in a region covered by the Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) survey. We start with 344 ALFALFA HI sources without optical counterparts and remove those that do not seem to have dark galaxy origin. To do that, we first eliminate 83 sources that are known HI clouds probably formed from tidal interactions between galaxies and 13 sources that have optical counterparts. We then remove 56 sources located near other HI sources, which are likely to be HI clouds. We further exclude 10 sources that have nearby HI sources within the ALFALFA beam and 40 sources potentially associated with nearby galaxies. We perform visual inspection of optical images from DESI Legacy Imaging Survey with an $r$-band surface brightness limit of $\sim 28.5 \rm \ mag\ arcsec^{-2}$ as well as NUV images from GALEX to confirm the absence of stellar emission. We additionally inspect infrared images from WISE and AKARI for dust emission. As a result, we identify 142 dark galaxy candidates and analyze their physical properties by comparing with luminous galaxies. We find that the dark galaxy candidates generally have smaller dynamical masses, higher HI-to-dynamical mass ratios, and are located in less dense regions when compared to luminous galaxies, which is consistent with results from cosmological simulations. This sample provides an important testbed for studying the role of dark matter in galaxy formation and evolution.

Self-patterning of Liquid Field's Metal for Enhanced Performance of Two-dimensional Semiconductor

Two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals semiconductors show promise for atomically thin flexible and transparent optoelectronic devices in future technologies. However, developing high-performance field-effect transistors (FETs) based on 2D materials is impeded by two key challenges, the high contact resistance at the 2D semiconductors-metal interface and the limited effective doping strategies. Here, we present a novel approach to overcome these challenges using self-propagating liquid Fields metal, a eutectic alloy with a low melting point of approximately 62 C. By modifying pre-patterned electrodes on WSe2 FETs through the deposition of Fields metal onto contact pad edges followed by vacuum annealing, we create new semimetal electrodes that seamlessly incorporate the liquid metal into 2D semiconductors. This integration preserves the original electrode architecture while transforming to semimetal compositions of Fields metal such as Bi, In, and Sn modifies the work functions to 2D semiconductors, resulting in reduced contact resistance without inducing Fermi-level pinning and charge carrier mobilities. Our method enhances the electrical performance of 2D devices and opens new avenues for designing high-resolution liquid metal circuits suitable for stretchable, flexible, and wearable 2D semiconductor applications.

Flux pinning in superconducting multilayer 2H-NbSe$_2$ nano-step junction

Superconductors exhibit dissipationless supercurrents even under finite bias and magnetic field conditions, provided these remain below the critical values. However, type-II superconductors in the flux flow regime display Ohmic dissipation arising from vortex dynamics under finite magnetic fields. The interplay between supercurrent and Ohmic dissipation in a type-II superconductor is dictated by vortex motion and the robustness of vortex pinning forces. In this study, we present an experimental investigation of the superconducting phase transitions and vortex dynamics in the atomically thin type-II superconductor 2H-NbSe$_2$. We fabricated a high-quality multilayer 2H-NbSe$_2$ with a step junction, demonstrating supercurrent in clean limit below a critical temperature of 6.6 K and a high residual resistance ratio of 17. The upper critical field was estimated to be 4.5 T and the Ginzburg-Landau coherence length 8.6 nm. Additionally, we observed phase transitions induced by vortex viscous dynamics in the 2H-NbSe$_2$ step junction. Analysis of the pinning force density using the Dew-Hughes model indicates that the pinning force in the 2H-NbSe$_2$ device can be attributed to step junction, related to the surface-$\Delta\kappa$ type of pinning centers. Our findings pave the way for engineering pinning forces by introducing artificial pinning centers through partial atomic thickness variation in layered 2D superconductors while minimizing unwanted quality degradation in the system.

Spin-orbit-splitting-driven nonlinear Hall effect in NbIrTe4

The Berry curvature dipole (BCD) serves as a one of the fundamental contributors to emergence of the nonlinear Hall effect (NLHE). Despite intense interest due to its potential for new technologies reaching beyond the quantum efficiency limit, the interplay between BCD and NLHE has been barely understood yet in the absence of a systematic study on the electronic band structure. Here, we report NLHE realized in NbIrTe4 that persists above room temperature coupled with a sign change in the Hall conductivity at 150 K. First-principles calculations combined with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements show that BCD tuned by the partial occupancy of spin-orbit split bands via temperature is responsible for the temperature-dependent NLHE. Our findings highlight the correlation between BCD and the electronic band structure, providing a viable route to create and engineer the non-trivial Hall effect by tuning the geometric properties of quasiparticles in transition-metal chalcogen compounds.

Morphology of Galaxies in JWST Fields: Initial Distribution and Evolution of Galaxy Morphology

A recent study from the Horizon Run (HR5) cosmological simulation has predicted that galaxies with ${\rm log}~M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}\lesssim 10$ in the cosmic morning ($10\gtrsim z\gtrsim 4$) dominantly have disk-like morphology in the $\Lambda$CDM universe, which is driven by the tidal torque in the initial matter fluctuations. For a direct comparison with observation, we identify a total of about $19,000$ James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) galaxies with ${\rm log}~M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}>9$ at $z=0.6-8.0$ utilizing deep JWST/NIRCam images of publicly released fields, including NEP-TDF, NGDEEP, CEERS, COSMOS, UDS, and SMACS J0723$-$7327. We estimate their stellar masses and photometric redshifts with the redshift dispersion of $\sigma_{\rm NMAD}=0.009$ and outlier fraction of only about $6\%$. We classify galaxies into three morphological types, `disks', `spheroids', and `irregulars', applying the same criteria used in the HR5 study. The morphological distribution of the JWST galaxies shows that disk galaxies account for $60-70\%$ at all redshift ranges. However, in the high-mass regime (${\rm log}~M_{\ast}/M_{\odot}\gtrsim11$), spheroidal morphology becomes the dominant type. This implies that mass growth of galaxies is accompanied with morphological transition from disks to spheroids. The fraction of irregulars is about 20\% or less at all mass and redshifts. All the trends in the morphology distribution are consistently found in the six JWST fields. These results are in close agreement with the results from the HR5 simulation, particularly confirming the prevalence of disk galaxies at small masses in the cosmic morning and noon.

Spherical Geometry of Hilbert Schemes of Conics in Adjoint Varieties

For each adjoint variety not of type $A$ or $C$, we study the irreducible component of the Hilbert scheme which parametrizes all smooth conics. We prove that its normalization is a spherical variety by using contact geometry, and then compute the colored fan of the normalization. As a corollary, we describe the conjugacy classes of conics in the adjoint variety and show smoothness of the normalization. Similar results on the Chow scheme of the adjoint variety are also presented.
