Shockwaves and Time Delays in Einstein-Maxwell Effective Field Theory

We derive the shockwave metric in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell effective field theory (EFT) by performing an ultra-relativistic boost of the charged black hole solution accompanied by a rescaling of its mass and charge, including leading order EFT corrections. In contrast to the neutral (Schwarzschild) case, where higher derivative operators leave the shockwave geometry unchanged, we show that electrically charged shockwaves receive nontrivial EFT corrections. We then compute the time delay experienced by a probe photon traversing the resulting charged shockwave. We find that two EFT contributions, the correction to the shockwave geometry and the backreaction induced by the probe photon, are both essential for obtaining a physical time delay that is invariant under field redefinitions of the metric.

Lorentz violating backgrounds from quadratic, shift-symmetric, ultralight dark matter

We consider an effective theory for a shift-symmetric, quadratically-coupled, ultralight spin-0 field. The leading CP-conserving interactions with Standard Model fields in the effective theory arise at dimension 8. We discuss the renormalization group evolution and positivity bounds on these operators, as well as their possible UV origins. Assuming that the spin-0 field is associated with an ultralight dark matter candidate, we discuss the effects of the dimension-8 operators on experiments searching for the oscillation of fundamental constants and Lorentz violation. We find that the direct bounds on these two effects are of similar strength but rather weak, corresponding to a UV cutoff scale of keV order, as they are mediated by dimension-8 operators.

A Generic Formation Mechanism of Ultralight Dark Matter Solar Halos

As-yet undiscovered light bosons may constitute all or part of the dark matter (DM) of our Universe, and are expected to have (weak) self-interactions. We show that the quartic self-interactions generically induce the capture of dark matter from the surrounding halo by external gravitational potentials such as those of stars, including the Sun. This leads to the subsequent formation of dark matter bound states supported by such external potentials, resembling gravitational atoms (e.g. a solar halo around our own Sun). Their growth is governed by the ratio $ξ_{\rm foc} \equiv λ_{\rm dB}/R_\star$ between the de Broglie wavelength of the incoming DM waves, $λ_{\rm dB}$, and the radius of the ground state $R_\star$. For $ξ_{\rm foc}\lesssim 1$, the gravitational atom grows to an (underdense) steady state that balances the capture of particles and the inverse (stripping) process. For $ξ_{\rm foc}\gtrsim 1$, a significant gravitational-focusing effect leads to exponential accumulation of mass from the galactic DM halo into the gravitational atom. For instance, a dark matter axion with mass of the order of $10^{-14}$ eV and decay constant between $10^{7}$ and $10^8$ GeV would form a dense halo around the Sun on a timescale comparable to the lifetime of the Solar System, leading to a local DM density at the position of the Earth $\mathcal{O}(10^4)$ times larger than that expected in the standard halo model. For attractive self-interactions, after its formation, the gravitational atom is destabilized at a large density, which leads to its collapse; this is likely to be accompanied by emission of relativistic bosons (a `Bosenova').

Axion Haloscope Array With $\mathcal{PT}$ Symmetry

We generalize the recently proposed $\mathcal{P T}$-symmetric axion haloscope to a larger array with more $\mathcal{P T}$-symmetric structures. By broadening the response bandwidth of the signal without increasing the readout noise, the optimized scan rate of the axion haloscope is significantly enhanced, as well as is the signal power. Furthermore, we show that the robustness of the detector towards the variations of the array coupling is the strongest when a binary tree structure is introduced which contains a largely enhanced $\mathcal{P T}$ symmetry. The multiple allowed probing sensors can further increase the scan rate by a factor of the sensors' number due to the correlation of the signals. This type of array can strongly boost the search for an axion compared to single-mode resonant detection. The enhancement to the scan rate becomes the most manifest when applied to the proposed detection using a superconducting radio-frequency cavity with an ac magnetic field where most of the parameter space of the QCD axion above kHz can be probed.

Renormalization Group Evolution from On-shell SMEFT

We describe the on-shell method to deriving the Renormalization Group (RG) evolution of Wilson coefficients of high dimensional operators at one loop, which is a necessary part in the on-shell construction of the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT), and exceptionally efficient based on the amplitude basis in hand. The UV divergence is obtained by firstly calculating the coefficients of scalar bubble integrals by unitary cuts, then subtracting the IR divergence in the massless bubbles, which can be easily read from the collinear factors we obtained for the Standard Model fields. Examples of deriving the anomalous dimensions at dimension six are presented in a pedagogical manner. We also give the results of contributions from the dimension-8 $H^4D^4$ operators to the running of $V^+V^-H^2$ operators, as well as the running of $B^+B^-H^2D^{2n}$ from $H^4D^{2n+4}$ for general $n$.

New Selection Rules from Angular Momentum Conservation

We derive the generalized partial wave expansion for $M \rightarrow N$ scattering amplitude in terms of spinor helicity variables. The basis amplitudes of the expansion with definite angular momentum $j$ consist of the Poincare Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, while $j$ constrains the UV physics that could generate the corresponding operators at tree level. Moreover, we obtain a series of selection rules that restrict the anomalous dimension matrix of effective operators and the way how effective operators contribute to some $2 \rightarrow N$ amplitudes at the loop level.

Loops and trees in generic EFTs

We consider aspects of tree and one-loop behavior in a generic 4d EFT of massless scalars, fermions, and vectors, with a particular eye to the high-energy limit of the Standard Model EFT at operator dimensions 6 and 8. First, we classify the possible Lorentz structures of operators and the subset of these that can arise at tree-level in a weakly coupled UV completion, extending the tree/loop classification through dimension 8 using functional methods. Second, we investigate how operators contribute to tree and one-loop helicity amplitudes, exploring the impact of non-renormalization theorems through dimension 8. We further observe that many dimension 6 contributions to helicity amplitudes, including rational parts, vanish exactly at one-loop level. This suggests the impact of helicity selection rules extends beyond one loop in non-supersymmetric EFTs.

Long Live the Higgs Factory: Higgs Decays to Long-Lived Particles at Future Lepton Colliders

We initiate the study of exotic Higgs decays to long-lived particles (LLPs) at proposed future lepton colliders, focusing on scenarios with displaced hadronic final states. Our analysis entails a realistic tracker-based search strategy involving the reconstruction of displaced secondary vertices and the imposition of selection cuts appropriate for eliminating the largest irreducible backgrounds. The projected sensitivity is broadly competitive with that of the LHC and potentially superior at lower LLP masses. In addition to forecasting branching ratio limits, which may be freely interpreted in a variety of model frameworks, we interpret our results in the parameter space of a Higgs portal Hidden Valley and various incarnations of neutral naturalness, illustrating the complementarity between direct searches for LLPs and precision Higgs coupling measurements at future lepton colliders.

Complete One-Loop Matching for a Singlet Scalar in the Standard Model EFT

We present the results of the first complete one-loop matching calculation between the real singlet scalar extension of the Standard Model and the Standard Model effective field theory (SMEFT) at dimension six. Beyond their immediate relevance to the precision calculation of observables in singlet extensions of the Standard Model, our results illustrate a variety of general features of one-loop matching. We explore the interplay between non-supersymmetric non-renormalization theorems, the logarithmic dependence of Wilson coefficients, and the relevance of mixed diagrams in theories with large scale separation. In addition, we highlight some of the subtleties involved in computing observables at next-to-leading order in SMEFT by mapping our results to the $T$ parameter at one loop.

Standard Model Effective Field Theory: Integrating out Neutralinos and Charginos in the MSSM

We apply the covariant derivative expansion method to integrate out the neutralinos and charginos in the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. The results are presented as set of pure bosonic dimension-6 operators in the Standard Model effective field theory. Nontrivial chirality dependence in fermionic covariant derivative expansion are discussed carefully. The results are checked by computing the $hγγ$ effective coupling and the electroweak oblique parameters using the Standard Model effective field theory with our effective operators and direct loop calculation. In global fitting the proposed lepton collider constraint projections, special phenomenological emphasis is paid to the gaugino mass unification scenario ($M_2\simeq2M_1$) and anomaly mediation scenario ($M_1\simeq3.3M_2$). These results show that the precision measurement experiments in future lepton colliders will provide a very useful complementary job in probing the electroweakino sector, in particular, filling the gap of the soft lepton plus missing $E_T$ channel search left by the traditional collider, where the neutralino as the lightest supersymmetric particle is very degenerated with the next-to-lightest chargino/neutralino.

Impact of a complex singlet: From dark matter to baryogenesis

With the assistance of a complex singlet, and an effective operator involving CP violations, the dark matter relic abundance and baryon asymmetry of the universe have been addressed simul- taneously. We studied the electroweak baryogenesis mechanism systematically. The electroweak phase transition analysis indicates that the strong first order phase transition takes place by one- step or two-step type due to the dynamics of the energy gap between the electroweak vacuum and the vacuum of the complex singlet. The relation between the magnitude of baryon asymmetry of the universe and the phase transition type and strength has been explored in the framework of electroweak baryogenesis.
