On the Spectra of Generalized Token Graphs of Stars

In the generalization of token graphs (or supertoken graphs), the vertices of a $k$-token graph of a graph $G$ correspond to $k$ distinguishable or indistinguishable tokens placed on $k$ different or equal vertices of $G$. In several cases, we provide the whole spectrum of a supertoken graph of a star by analyzing its regular partitions.

The Algebraic Connectivity and Laplacian Spectral Radius of Token Graphs

For a graph $G=(V,E)$ of order $n$ and an integer $k$ between $1$ and $\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor$, its token graph $F_k(G)$ is the graph whose vertices consist of the $\binom{n}{k}$ $k$-subsets of $V$, and two vertices of $F_k(G)$ are adjacent whenever their symmetric difference is an edge in $E$. It was found that the algebraic connectivity of a graph is greater than or equal to that of its token graph, while the Laplacian spectral radius of a graph is less than or equal to that of its token graph. Moreover, a conjecture that the algebraic connectivity of a graph coincides with that of its token graph has been proved by using the theory of continuous Markov chains of random walks. In this paper, we derive some results about the algebraic connectivities of a graph and the same graph after adding new edges and their token graphs to obtain a combinatorial/algebraic proof. Besides, we provide some conditions under which the Laplacian spectral radius of a graph is less than that of its token graph. Finally, we characterize the graphs that have the same Laplacian spectral radius as their token graphs, including trees.

On supertoken graphs

We generalize the concept of token graphs to obtain supertoken graphs. In the latter case, there can be more than one token in a vertex. We formally define supertoken graphs and establish their basic properties. Moreover, we provide some bounds and exact values on the independence number, clique number, and chromatic number of these graphs. Finally, we construct a new infinite family of graphs, which we call the $p$-augmented 2-token graphs of cycles, and study their properties, including the spectral radius or largest adjacency eigenvalue.

On Generalized Token Graphs

The vertices of a $k$-token graph of a graph $G$ correspond to $k$ indistinguishable tokens placed on $k$ different vertices of $G$. Changing some conditions on both the nature of the tokens and the number of tokens allowed in each vertex of $G$, we define a generalization of token graphs, which we call generalized token graphs or simply supertoken graphs, which have different applications. Depending on the above conditions, different families of graphs (such as the Cartesian $k$-th power of $G$ by itself) are obtained, and we present some of their properties, including order, size, and connectivity.

The Shannon capacity of graph powers

For a graph $G$, its $k$-th graph power $G^k$ is constructed by placing an edge between two vertices if they are within distance $k$. We consider the problem of deriving upper bounds on the Shannon capacity of graph powers by using spectral graph theory and linear optimization methods. First, we use the so-called ratio-type bound to provide an alternative and spectral proof of a result by Lovász [IEEE Trans. Inform. Theory 1979], which states that, for a regular graph, the Hoffman ratio bound on the independence number is also an upper bound on the Lovász theta number and, hence, also on the Shannon capacity. In fact, we show that Lovász' result holds in the more general context of graph powers. Secondly, we derive another bound on the Shannon capacity of graph powers, the so-called rank-type bound, which depends on a new family of polynomials that can be computed by running a simple algorithm. Lastly, we provide several computational experiments that demonstrate the sharpness of the two proposed algebraic bounds. As a byproduct, when these two new algebraic bounds are tight, they can be used to easily derive the exact values of the Lovász theta number (which relies on solving an SDP) and the Shannon capacity (which is not known to be computable) of the corresponding graph power.

Some bounds on the Laplacian eigenvalues of token graphs

The $k$-token graph $F_k(G)$ of a graph $G$ on $n$ vertices is the graph whose vertices are the ${n\choose k}$ $k$-subsets of vertices from $G$, two of which being adjacent whenever their symmetric difference is a pair of adjacent vertices in $G$. It is known that the algebraic connectivity (or second Laplacian eigenvalue) of $F_k(G)$ equals the algebraic connectivity $α(G)$ of $G$. In this paper, we give some bounds on the (Laplacian) eigenvalues of a $k$-token graph (including the algebraic connectivity) in terms of the $h$-token graph, with $h\leq k$. For instance, we prove that if $λ$ is an eigenvalue of $F_k(G)$, but not of $G$, then $$ λ\ge kα(G)-k+1. $$ As a consequence, we conclude that if $α(G)\geq k$, then $α(F_h(G))=α(G)$ for every $h\le k$.

On the spectra of token graphs of cycles and other graphs

The $k$-token graph $F_k(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the graph whose vertices are the $k$-subsets of vertices from $G$, two of which being adjacent whenever their symmetric difference is a pair of adjacent vertices in $G$. It is a known result that the algebraic connectivity (or second Laplacian eigenvalue) of $F_k(G)$ equals the algebraic connectivity of $G$. In this paper, we first give results that relate the algebraic connectivities of a token graph and the same graph after removing a vertex. Then, we prove the result on the algebraic connectivity of 2-token graphs for two infinite families: the odd graphs $O_r$ for all $r$, and the multipartite complete graphs $K_{n_1,n_2,\ldots,n_r}$ for all $n_1,n_2,\ldots,n_r$ In the case of cycles, we present a new method that allows us to compute the whole spectrum of $F_2(C_n)$. This method also allows us to obtain closed formulas that give asymptotically exact approximations for most of the eigenvalues of $F_2(\textit{}C_n)$.

On inertia and ratio type bounds for the $k$-independence number of a graph and their relationship

For $k\ge 1$, the $k$-independence number $α_k$ of a graph is the maximum number of vertices that are mutually at distance greater than $k$. The well-known inertia and ratio bounds for the (1-)independence number $α(=α_1)$ of a graph, due to Cvetković and Hoffman, respectively, were generalized recently for every value of $k$. We show that, for graphs with enough regularity, the polynomials involved in such generalizations are closely related and give exact values for $α_k$, showing a new relationship between the inertia and ratio type bounds. Additionally, we investigate the existence and properties of the extremal case of sets of vertices that are mutually at maximum distance for walk-regular graphs. Finally, we obtain new sharp inertia and ratio type bounds for partially walk-regular graphs by using the predistance polynomials.
