$\mathcal{PT}$ and anti-$\mathcal{PT}$ phase transitions in a trimerized Su--Schrieffer--Heeger chain with nonreciprocal Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We theoretically investigate a one-dimensional trimerized Su--Schrieffer--Heeger chain with three sublattices per unit cell subjected to a nonreciprocal Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Invoking a spin-flip symmetry, the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian decomposes into two independent spin sectors, enabling a spin-resolved analysis of non-Hermitian skin effects and system symmetries. We identify a rich phase diagram consisting of four bulk phases and two edge-state phases. The bulk phases include fully $\mathcal{PT}$-unbroken (real-spectrum) and fully anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-unbroken (imaginary-spectrum) regimes, as well as two mixed phases where one band remains on the real or imaginary axis while the other two form complex-conjugate pairs. The two edge-state phases correspond to topological edge modes with either $\mathcal{PT}$-unbroken (real) or anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-unbroken (imaginary) energies. Using non-Bloch band theory and Cardano's method, we derive closed-form expressions for phase boundaries and establish the bulk-edge correspondence for each spin sector. Calculations of Berry phase and directional inverse participation ratios confirm our analytical predictions. Our results provide a minimal platform for realizing spin-resolved non-Hermitian topology and edge-selective symmetry preservation, in which the bulk and edge states belong to distinct symmetry classes.

Electronic correlations in magnetized helical edge states coupled to s-wave superconductors

We theoretically study the role of electron-electron interactions in one-dimensional magnetized helical states coupled to an s-wave superconductor. We consider a partially mixed helical (superhelical) regime, where the magnetic field (superconductivity) has a dominant contribution. Using bosonization and renormalization group techniques, it is shown how the interactions affect the correlation functions in the system. In the partially mixed helical regime, we find that superconducting pairing promotes spin-density-wave correlations, while singlet and triplet pairing correlations suppress, especially under attractive interactions. In contrast, in the superhelical regime, a perturbative Zeeman field enhances both spin singlet and spin triplet-x pairings under repulsive interactions. We calculate both logarithmic and residual corrections to charge-density-wave, spin-density-wave, and pairing correlations, revealing short- and long-range behaviors. We further investigate spin transport properties supplemented by a renormalization group analysis of the temperature and frequency dependence of spin conductivity. We also analyze the transport of momentum-spin-locked carriers in the presence of Zeeman-induced and pairing-induced gaps, uncovering the effect of interactions and the interplay between the two gaps in helical systems.

Spin responses of a disordered helical superconducting edge under Zeeman field

We investigate analytically and numerically the effects of disorder on the helical edge of the 2D topological insulator in the presence of the Zeeman field and superconductivity. Employing bosonization and a renormalization-group analysis, we study how impurity potentials modify charge- and spin-density wave correlations as well as superconducting pair correlations. Our results reveal that the Zeeman field controls the competition: in the attractive regime, it amplifies the superconducting gap, while in the repulsive regime, it stabilizes impurity effects by keeping the system longer in the relevant regime for disorder. We also find that disorder induces logarithmic suppression of transverse density-wave correlations, while at the same time introducing positive logarithmic corrections that enhance superconducting pair correlations and contribute to their stability. These effects directly modify the scaling of spin conductance, providing experimentally accessible signatures of the interplay between disorder and superconductivity in topological edge channels.

Promoted current-induced spin polarization in inversion symmetry broken topological insulator thin films

We theoretically investigate current-induced spin polarization in disordered topological insulator thin films with broken inversion symmetry under an applied in-plane electric field. Utilizing the Kubo formalism within the self-consistent Born approximation and incorporating vertex corrections to account for multiple scattering events, we analyze how disorder, chemical potential, the electrostatic potential difference between the top and bottom surfaces, and momentum-dependent hybridization affect the spin susceptibility. Our results reveal that the spin susceptibility exhibits nonzero values within a finite range around a zero gap, and this range broadens as the chemical potential increases. A higher hybridization strength induces asymmetry in the spin response. A stronger potential difference, breaking inversion symmetry, significantly enhances polarization. This enhancement is a trend attributable to band inversion and is further refined by vertex corrections. These findings provide a theoretical framework for tuning spin-charge conversion in topological thin films, with implications for spintronic device applications.

Quantum Hall Effect and Chern Phases in the 1/5-Depleted Square Lattice

We investigate the fractional energy spectrum and quantum Hall response of a two-dimensional 1/5-depleted square lattice subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field. Using a tight-binding model that includes both nearest-neighbor (t_1) and next-nearest-neighbor (t_2) hopping, we compute the Hofstadter butterfly and extract quantized Hall conductivities via Chern number calculations. In the absence of diagonal hopping (t_2 =0), the spectrum exhibits exact particle-hole and flux-inversion symmetries, and the total Chern number across all bands vanishes. When t_2 is introduced, these symmetries are broken, the butterfly becomes deformed, new gaps open, and -remarkably-a nonzero total Chern sum can emerge, signaling unconventional topological phases. By systematically varying t_1 and t_2, we identify regimes with large individual Chern indices and parameter windows where gap stability and Hall plateaus are optimized. Our results demonstrated that lattice depletion combined with diagonal hopping provides a tunable route to engineer robust Chern insulators in both artificial and oxide-based square-lattice systems.

Electron-electron interactions in partially mixed helical states

We theoretically study the effect of electron-electron interactions in one-dimensional partially mixed helical states. These helical states can be realized at the edges of two-dimensional topological insulators with partially broken time-reversal symmetry, resulting in helical gapped states. Using the bosonization method and renormalization group analysis, we identify weak gap, crossover, and strong gap regimes in the phase diagram. We find that strong electron-electron interaction mixes the helicity of the states, leading to the relevant strong gap regime. We investigate the charge and spin density wave correlation functions in different relevancy regimes of the gap mediated by interactions, where in the case of strong repulsive interaction, the spin density wave dominates the charge density wave. Additionally, employing the Memory function technique, we calculate the effect of mixed helicity on the charge transport in a sufficiently long edge. We find a non-uniform temperature dependence for the charge conductivity in both the strong and weak gap regimes with distinct features.

Topological phases of commensurate or incommensurate non-Hermitian Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattices

We theoretically investigate topological features of a one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger lattice with modulating non-Hermitian on-site potentials containing four sublattices per unit cell. The lattice can be either commensurate or incommensurate. In the former case, the entire lattice can be mapped by supercells completely. While in the latter case, there are two extra lattice points, thereby making the last cell incomplete. We find that an anti-PT transition occurs at exceptional points of edge states at certain parameters, which does not coincide with the conventional topological phase transition characterized by the Berry phase, provided the imaginary on-site potential is large enough. Interestingly, when the potential exceeds a critical value, edge states appear even in the regime with a trivial Berry phase. To characterize these novel edge states we present topological invariants associated with the system's parity. Finally, we analyze the dynamics for initial states with different spatial distributions, which exhibit distinct dynamics for the commensurate and incommensurate cases, depending on the imaginary part of edge state energy.

Revival of superconductivity in a one-dimensional dimerized diamond lattice

We study an s-wave superconductivity in a one-dimensional dimerized diamond lattice in the presence of spin-orbit coupling and Zeeman field. The considered diamond lattice, comprising of three sublattices per unitcell and having flat band, has two dimerization patterns; the intra unitcell hoppings have the same (opposite) dimerization pattern as the corresponding inter unitcell hoppings, namely, neighboring (facing) dimerization. Using the mean-field theory, we calculate the superconducting order parameter self-consistently and examine the stability of the superconducting phase against the spin-orbit coupling, and Zeeman splitting, dimerization, and temperature. We find that the spin-orbit coupling or Zeeman splitting individually has a detrimental effect on the superconductivity, mostly for the facing dimerization. But their mutual effect revives the superconductivity at charge neutrality point for the facing dimerization.

Enhanced and stable spin Hall conductivity in a disordered time-reversal and inversion symmetry broken topological insulator thin film

We consider a disordered topological insulator thin film placed on the top of a ferromagnetic insulator with a perpendicular exchange field $M$ and subjected to a perpendicular electric field. The presence of ferromagnetic insulator causes that bottom surface states of the topological insulator thin film become spin polarized and the electric field provides a potential difference $V$ between the two surface states, resulting in breaking of time-reversal and inversion symmetry in the system. Using Kubo formalism and employing the first Born approximation as well as the self-consistent Born approximation, we calculate the spin Hall conductivity. We find that for small values of $V$, a large spin conductivity can be generated through large values of $M$ away from the charge neutrality point. But for large values of $V$, the spin conductivity can be promoted even with small values of $M$ around the charge neutrality point. The effect of vertex corrections and the stability of the obtained large spin conductivity against disorders are also examined.

Floquet topological phase transitions in a periodically quenched dimer

We report on the theoretical investigation of the topological properties of a periodically quenched one-dimensional dimerized lattice where a piece-wise constant Hamiltonian switches from $h_1$ to $h_2$ at a partition time $t_p$ within each driving period $T$. We examine different dimerization patterns for $h_1$ and $h_2$ and the interplay with the driving parameters that lead to the emergence of topological states both at zero energy and at the edge of the Brillouin-Floquet quasi-energy zone. We illustrate different phenomena, including the occurrence of both edge states in a semimetal spectrum, the topological transitions, and the generation of zero-energy topological states from trivial snapshots. The role of the different symmetries in our results is also discussed.

Topological properties of subsystem-symmetry-protected edge states in an extended quasi-one-dimensional dimerized lattice

We investigate theoretically the topological properties of dimerized quasi-one-dimensional (1D) lattice comprising of multi legs $(L)$ as well as multi sublattices $(R)$. The system has main and subsidiary exchange symmetries. In the basis of latter one, the system can be divided into $L$ 1D subsystems each of which corresponds to a generalized $SSH_R$ model having $R$ sublattices and on-site potentials. Chiral symmetry is absent in all subsystems except when the axis of main exchange symmetry coincides on the central chain. We find that the system may host zero- and finite-energy topological edge states. The existence of zero-energy edge state requires a certain relation between the number of legs and sublattices. As such, different topological phases, protected by subsystem symmetry, including zero-energy edge states in the main gap, no zero-energy edge states, and zero-energy edge states in the bulk states are characterized. Despite the classification symmetry of the system belongs to $BDI$ but each subsystem falls in either $AI$ or $BDI$ symmetry class.

Floquet engineering of topological metal states and hybridization of edge states with bulk states in dimerized two-leg ladders

We consider asymmetric and symmetric dimerized two-leg ladders, comprising of four different lattice points per unit cell, illuminated by circularly polarized light. In the asymmetric dimerized ladder case, rungs are not perpendicular to the ladder's legs whereas the rungs are perpendicular to the legs for the symmetric one. Using the Floquet theory, we obtain an effective Hamiltonian to study topological properties of the systems. Depending on the dimerization strength and driving amplitude, it is shown that topologically protected edge states manifest themselves not only as a zero-energy band within the gap between conduction and valence band but also as finite-energy curved bands inside the gap of subbands. The latter one can penetrate into bulk states and hybridize with the bulk states revealing hybridized Floquet topological metal phase with delocalized edge states in the asymmetric ladder case. However, in the symmetric ladder, the finite-energy edge states while remaining localized can coexist with the extended bulk states manifesting Floquet topological metal phase.

Indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in one-dimensional gapped helical states

We investigate theoretically indirect exchange interaction between magnetic impurities mediated by one-dimensional gapped helical states. Such states, containing massive Dirac fermions, may be realized on the edge of a two-dimensional topological insulator when time-reversal symmetry is weakly broken. We find that the indirect exchange interaction consists of Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya, in-plane and out-of-plane Ising terms. These terms decay exponentially when Fermi level lies inside the bandgap whereas the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya term has smallest amplitude. Outside the energy gap the massive helical states modify oscillatory behaviors of the range functions so that their periods decrease near the edge of band in terms of energy gap or Fermi energy. In addition, the out-of-plane Ising term vanishes in the case of zero-gap structure but its oscillation amplitude increases versus energy gap and decreases as a function of Fermi energy whereas the oscillation amplitudes of other components remain constant. Analytical results are also obtained for subgap and over gap regimes. Furthermore, the effects of electron-electron interactions are analyzed.

Topological properties of a generalized spin-orbit-coupled Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model

We explore theoretically the effect of inter and intra cell spin-orbit couplings on topological properties of a generalized Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model with multipartite lattice structure containing even number of sites per unit cell. We show that the spin-orbit couplings enrich topological phase diagrams so that nontrivial topological regions in the space of parameters extend significantly which is suitable for potential applications. We present an analytical formula for winding number in terms of sublattice number signaling that there are two nontrivial topological phases in the space of parameters hosting twofold/fourfold degenerate zero-mode boundary states. We also find that by increasing the number of sublattices within unit cell, the nontrivial regions of topological phase diagram including twofold degenerate zero-mode edge states extend dramatically. Our symmetry investigation shows that U(1) spin rotational symmetry around the lattice direction is the crucial ingredient for the appearance of fourfold degenerate zero-mode boundary states.

Superconducting proximity effect in flat band systems

We study theoretically proximity-induced superconductivity and its inverse effect in dice lattice flat band model by considering Josephson junction with an s-wave pairing in the superconducting leads. Using self-consistent tight-binding Bogoliubov-de Gennes method, we show that there is a critical value for chemical potential of the superconductors depending on paring interaction strength over which for undoped normal region the proximity effect is enhanced. Whereas if the superconductor chemical potential is less than the critical one the proximity effect decreases regardless of normal region doping and in the meanwhile, the pairing amplitude of superconducting region increases significantly. Furthermore, we unveil that the supercurrent passing through the junction is large (vanishingly small) when the superconductor chemical potential is smaller (larger) than the critical value which increases as a function of normal region chemical potential.

One-dimensional topological metal

We propose a new type of topological states of matter exhibiting topologically nontrivial edge states (ESs) within gapless bulk states (GBSs) protected by both spin rotational and reflection symmetries. A model presenting such states is simply comprised of a one-dimensional reflection symmetric superlattice in the presence of spin-orbit coupling containing odd number of sublattices per unit cell. We show that the system has a rich phase diagram including a topological metal (TM) phase where nontrivial ESs coexist with nontrivial GBSs at Fermi level. Topologically distinct phases can be reached through subband gap closing-reopening transition depending on the relative strength of inter and intra unit cell spin-orbit couplings. Moreover, topological class of the system is AI with an integer topological invariant called $\mathbb{Z}$ index. The stability of TM states is also analyzed against Zeeman magnetic fields and on-site potentials resulting in that the spin rotational symmetry around the lattice direction is a key requirement for the appearance of such states. Also, possible experimental realizations are discussed.

The influence of anisotropic Rashba spin-orbit coupling on current-induced spin polarization in graphene

We consider a disordered graphene layer with anisotropic Rashba spin-orbit coupling subjected to a longitudinal electric field. Using the linear response theory we calculate current-induced spin polarization including in-plane normal and parallel components with respect to the electric field direction. Unlike the case of isotropic Rashba spin-orbit where the normal component of spin polarization is linear in terms of Fermi energy around the Dirac point, anisotropic Rashba spin-orbit can result in non-linear dependence of this component at such energies within the Lifshitz points. Furthermore, we show that anisotropic Rashba interaction allows for tuning the direction of spin polarization from perpendicular direction to the parallel one such that for certain values of Rashba parameters the magnitudes of both components can also be quenched. The effect of carriers scattering on randomly distributed non-magnetic disorders is also taken into account by calculating vertex correction. This results in modification of spin polarization components depending on the relative strength of Rashba parameters.

Zeeman-field-induced nontrivial topological phases in a one-dimensional spin-orbit-coupled dimerized lattice

We study theoretically the interplay effect of Zeeman field and modulated spin-orbit coupling on topological properties of a one-dimensional dimerized lattice, known as Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. We find that in the weak (strong) modulated spin-orbit coupling regime, trivial regions or nontrivial ones with two pairs of zero-energy states can be turned into nontrivial regions by applying a uniform (staggered) perpendicular Zeeman field through a topological phase transition. Furthermore, the resulting nontrivial phase hosting a pair of zero-energy boundary states can survive within a certain range of the perpendicular Zeeman field magnitude. Due to the effective time-reversal, particle-hole, chiral, and inversion symmetries, in the presence of either uniform or staggered perpendicular Zeeman field, the topological class of the system is BDI which can be characterized by $\mathbbm{Z}$ index. We also examine the robustness of the nontrivial phase by breaking the underlying symmetries giving rise that inversion symmetry plays an important role.
