Many-body localization from a one-particle perspective in the disordered 1D Bose-Hubbard model

We numerically investigate 1D Bose-Hubbard chains with onsite disorder by means of exact diagonalization. A primary focus of our work is on characterizing Fock-space localization in this model from the single-particle perspective. For this purpose, we compute the one-particle density matrix (OPDM) in many-body eigenstates. We show that the natural orbitals (the eigenstates of the OPDM) are extended in the ergodic phase and real-space localized when one enters into the MBL phase. Furthermore, the distributions of occupations of the natural orbitals can be used as measures of Fock-space localization in the respective basis. Consistent with previous studies, we observe signatures of a transition from the ergodic to the many-body localized (MBL) regime when increasing the disorder strength. We further demonstrate that Fock-space localization, albeit weaker, is also evidently present in the distribution of the physical densities in the MBL regime, both for soft- and hardcore bosons. Moreover, the full distribution of the densities of the physical particles provides a one-particle measure for the detection of the ergodic-MBL transition which could be directly accessed in experiments with ultra-cold gases.

Initial correlated states for the Generalized Kadanoff--Baym Ansatz without adiabatic switching-on of interactions in closed systems

We reconsider the Generalized Kadanoff--Baym Ansatz (GKBA) approximation for non-equilibrium Green's functions and extend it to self-consistently define an equilibrium correlated (within GKBA) state in closed systems. The advantage of the proposed prescription is to avoid the preparation of the initial equilibrium correlated state via adiabatic switching-on of the correlations. A simple model system, namely a Hubbard-dimer, is used to illustrate aspects of the computational implementation and performance of the new scheme.

Molecular junctions and molecular motors: Including Coulomb repulsion in electronic friction using nonequilibrium Green's functions

We present a theory of molecular motors based on the Ehrenfest dynamics for the nuclear coordinates and the adiabatic limit of the Kadanoff-Baym equations for the current-induced forces. Electron-electron interactions can be systematically included through many-body perturbation theory, making the nonequilibrium Green's functions formulation suitable for first-principles treatments of realistic junctions. The method is benchmarked against simulations via real-time Kadanoff-Baym equations, finding an excellent agreement. Results on a paradigmatic model of molecular motor show that correlations can change dramatically the physical scenario by, e.g. introducing a sizable damping in the self-sustained van der Pol oscillations.

Disorder and interactions in systems out of equilibrium: The exact independent-particle picture from density functional theory

Density functional theory (DFT) exploits an independent-particle-system construction to replicate the densities and current of an interacting system. This construction is used here to access the exact effective potential and bias of non-equilibrium systems with disorder and interactions. Our results show that interactions smoothen the effective disorder landscape, but do not necessarily increase the current, due to the competition of disorder screening and effective bias. This puts forward DFT as a diagnostic tool to understand disorder screening in a wide class of interacting disordered systems.
