Symmetric Jacobi Polynomials on a Triangle and Their Spectral Algebra

We study a family of symmetric orthogonal polynomials on the unit triangle associated with the weight \[ w_{α,γ,κ}(x,y) = (xy)^α(1-x-y)^γ|x-y|^{2κ+1}, \quad α,γ,κ>-1,\quad α+κ>-\frac32. \] We construct the corresponding monic symmetric orthogonal basis on the simplex chamber and prove that its elements are eigenfunctions of a formally self-adjoint second-order differential operator \(\mathcal D_1^{α,γ,κ}\). A pair of adjoint ladder operators yields a second operator of order two \(\mathcal D_2^{α,κ}\) with the same eigenfunctions. We also obtain an explicit representation of the basis in terms of one-variable Jacobi polynomials and compute its squared norms. After passing to the elementary symmetric variables, we determine the full algebra of linear partial differential operators with real polynomial coefficients having the transformed polynomials as eigenfunctions. Every such operator can be written uniquely as a polynomial in \(\mathcal D_1^{α,γ,κ}\) and \(\mathcal D_2^{α,κ}\); consequently, this algebra is isomorphic to the real polynomial ring in two variables.

A class of Truncated Freud polynomials

Consider the following truncated Freud linear functional $\mathbf{u}_z$ depending on a parameter $z$, $$\langle\mathbf{u}_z,p\rangle=\int_0^\infty p(x)e^{-zx^4}dx,\quad z>0.$$ The aim of this work is to analyze the properties of the sequence of orthogonal polynomials $(P_n)_{n\geq 0}$ with respect to $\mathbf{u}_z$. Such a linear functional is semiclassical and, as a consequence, we get the system of nonlinear difference equations (Laguerre-Freud equations) that the coefficients of the three-term recurrence satisfy. The asymptotic behavior of such coefficients is given. On the other hand, the raising and lowering operators associated with such a linear functional are obtained, and thus a second-order linear differential equation of holonomic type that $(P_n)_{n\geq 0}$ satisfies is deduced. From this fact, an electrostatic interpretation of their zeros is given. Finally, some illustrative numerical tests concerning the behavior of the least and greatest zeros of these polynomials are presented.

Ladder operators for generalized Zernike or disk polynomials

The aim of this work is to report on several ladder operators for generalized Zernike polynomials which are orthogonal polynomials on the unit disk $\mathbf{D}\,=\,\{(x,y)\in \mathbb{R}^2: \; x^2+y^2\leqslant 1\}$ with respect to the weight function $W_μ(x,y)\,=\,(1-x^2-y^2)^μ$ where $μ>-1$. These polynomials can be expressed in terms of the univariate Jacobi polynomials and, thus, we start by deducing several ladder operators for the Jacobi polynomials. Due to the symmetry of the disk and the weight function $W_μ$, it turns out that it is more convenient to use complex variables $z\,=\, x+iy$ and $\bar{z}\,=\,x-iy$. Indeed, this allows us to systematically use the univariate ladder operators to deduce analogous ones for the complex generalized Zernike polynomials. Some of these univariate and bivariate ladder operators already appear in the literature. However, to the best of our knowledge, the proofs presented here are new. Lastly, we illustrate the use of ladder operators in the study of the orthogonal structure of some Sobolev spaces.

On classical orthogonal polynomials and the Cholesky factorization of a class of Hankel matrices

Classical moment functionals (Hermite, Laguerre, Jacobi, Bessel) can be characterized as those linear functionals whose moments satisfy a second order linear recurrence relation. In this work, we use this characterization to link the theory of classical orthogonal polynomials and the study of Hankel matrices whose entries satisfy a second order linear recurrence relation. Using the recurrent character of the entries of such Hankel matrices, we give several characterizations of the triangular and diagonal matrices involved in their Cholesky factorization and connect them with a corresponding characterization of classical orthogonal polynomials.

A class of Bernstein-type operators on the unit disk

We construct and study sequences of linear operators of Bernstein-type acting on bivariate functions defined on the unit disk. To this end, we study Bernstein-type operators under a domain transformation, we analyse the bivariate Bernstein-Stancu operators, and we introduce Bernstein-type operators on disk quadrants by means of continuously differentiable transformations of the function. We state convergence results for continuous functions and we estimate the rate of convergence. Finally some interesting numerical examples are given, comparing approximations using the shifted Bernstein-Stancu and the Bernstein-type operator on disk quadrants.

Matrix Pearson equations satisfied by Koornwinder weights in two variables

We consider Koornwinder's method for constructing orthogonal polynomials in two variables from orthogonal polynomials in one variable. If semiclassical orthogonal polynomials in one variable are used, then Koornwinder's construction generates semiclassical orthogonal polynomials in two variables. We consider two methods for deducing matrix Pearson equations for weight functions associated with these polynomials, and consequently, we deduce the second order linear partial differential operators for classical Koornwinder polynomials.
