False Vacuum Decay With Gravity in Non-Thin-Wall Limit

We consider a wave-function approach to the false vacuum decay with gravity and present a new method to calculate the tunneling amplitude under the WKB approximation. The result agrees with the one obtained by the Euclidean path-integral method, but gives a much clearer interpretation of an instanton (Euclidean bounce solution) that dominates the path integral. In particular, our method is fully capable of dealing with the case of a thick wall with the radius of the bubble comparable to the radius of the instanton, thus surpassing the path-integral method whose use can be justified only in the thin-wall and small bubble radius limit. The calculation is done by matching two WKB wave functions, one with the final state and another with the initial state, with the wave function in the region where the scale factor of the metric is sufficiently small compared with the inverse of the typical energy scale of the field potential at the tunneling. The relation of the boundary condition on our wave function for the false vacuum decay with Hartle-Hawking's no-boundary boundary condition and Vilenkin's tunneling boundary condition on the wave function of the universe is also discussed.

Black hole formation in the Friedmann universe: Formulation and computation in numerical relativity

We study formation of black holes in the Friedmann universe. We present a formulation of the Einstein equations under the constant mean curvature time-slicing condition. Our formalism not only gives us the analytic solution of the perturbation equations for non-linear density and metric fluctuations on superhorizon scales, but also allows us to carry out a numerical relativity simulation for black hole formation after the scale of the density fluctuations is well within the Hubble horizon scale. We perform a numerical simulation of spherically symmetric black hole formation in the radiation-dominated, spatially flat background universe for a realistic initial condition supplied from the analytic solution. It is found that the initial metric perturbation has to be non-linear (the maximum value of 3D conformal factor $ψ_0$ at $t=0$ should be larger than $\sim 1.4$) for a black hole to be formed, but the threshold amplitude for black hole formation and the final black hole mass considerably depend on the initial density (or metric) profile of the perturbation: The threshold value of $ψ_0$ at $t=0$ for formation of a black hole is smaller for a high density peak surrounded by a low density region than for that surrounded by the average density region of the flat universe. This suggests that it is necessary to take into account the spatial correlation of density fluctuations in the study of primordial black hole formation.

Spectrum of Cosmological Perturbations in the One-Bubble Open Universe

The spectrum of cosmological perturbations in the context of the one-bubble open inflation model is discussed, taking into account fluctuations of the metric. We find that, quite generically, thin wall single field models have no supercurvature modes. However, single field models with supercurvature modes do exist. In these models the density parameter $Ω$ becomes a random variable taking a range of values inside of each bubble. We also show that the model dependence of the continuous spectrum for both scalar and tensor-type perturbations is small as long as the kinetic energy density of the background field does not dominate the total energy density. We conclude that the spectrum of the density perturbation predicted in the single-field model of the one-bubble open inflation is rather robust. We also consider the spectrum of scalar and tensor perturbations in a model of the Hawking-Turok type, without a false vacuum.

CMB in Open Inflation

The possibility to have an infinite open inflationary universe inside a bubble of a finite size is one of the most interesting realizations extensively discussed in the literature. The original idea was based on the theory of tunneling and bubble formation in the theories of a single scalar field. However, for a long time we did not have any consistent models of this type, so it was impossible to compare predictions of such models with the observational data on the CMB anisotropy. The first semi-realistic model of this type was proposed only very recently, in hep-ph/9807493. Here we present the results of our investigation of the scalar and tensor perturbation spectra and the resulting CMB anisotropy in such models. In all models which we have studied there are no supercurvature perturbations. The spectrum of scalar CMB anisotropies has a minimum at small l and a plateau at l > O(10) for low Omega_0. Meanwhile tensor CMB anisotropies are peaked at l=2. Relative magnitude of the scalar CMB spectra versus tensor CMB spectra at small l depends on the parameters of the models.

No supercritical supercurvature mode conjecture in one-bubble open inflation

In the path integral approach to false vacuum decay with the effect of gravity, there is an unsolved problem, called the negative mode problem. We show that the appearance of a supercritical supercurvature mode in the one-bubble open inflation scenario is equivalent to the existence of a negative mode around the Euclidean bounce solution. Supercritical supercurvature modes are those whose mode functions diverge exponentially for large spatial radius on the time constant hypersurface of the open universe. Then we propose a conjecture that there should be ``no supercritical supercurvature mode''. For a class of models that contains a wide variety of tunneling potentials, this conjecture is shown to be correct.

Innermost stable circular orbits around relativistic rotating stars

We investigate the innermost stable circular orbit (ISCO) of a test particle moving on the equatorial plane around rotating relativistic stars such as neutron stars. First, we derive approximate analytic formulas for the angular velocity and circumferential radius at the ISCO making use of an approximate relativistic solution which is characterized by arbitrary mass, spin, mass quadrupole, current octapole and mass $2^4$-pole moments. Then, we show that the analytic formulas are accurate enough by comparing them with numerical results, which are obtained by analyzing the vacuum exterior around numerically computed geometries for rotating stars of polytropic equation of state. We demonstrate that contribution of mass quadrupole moment for determining the angular velocity and, in particular, the circumferential radius at the ISCO around a rapidly rotating star is as important as that of spin.

Super-Horizon Scale Dynamics of Multi-Scalar Inflation

We consider the dynamics of a multi-component scalar field on super-horizon scales in the context of inflationary cosmology. We present a method to solve the perturbation equations on super- horizon scales, i.e., in the long wavelength limit, by using only the knowledge of spatially homogeneous background solutions. In doing so, we clarify the relation between the perturbation equations in the long wavelength limit and the background equations. Then as a natural extension of our formalism, we provide a strategy to study super-horizon scale perturbations beyond the standard linear perturbation theory. Namely we reformulate our method so as to take into account the nonlinear dynamics of the scalar field.

Black Hole Perturbation

We present analytic calculations of gravitational waves from a particle orbiting a black hole. We first review the Teukolsky formalism for dealing with the gravitational perturbation of a black hole. Then we develop a systematic method to calculate higher order post-Newtonian corrections to the gravitational waves emitted by an orbiting particle. As applications of this method, we consider orbits that are nearly circular, including exactly circular ones, slightly eccentric ones and slightly inclined orbits off the equatorial plane of a Kerr black hole and give the energy flux and angular momentum flux formulas at infinity with higher order post-Newtonian corrections. Using a different method that makes use of an analytic series representation of the solution of the Teukolsky equation, we also give a post-Newtonian expanded formula for the energy flux absorbed by a Kerr black hole for a circular orbit.

Gravitational Radiation Reaction

We consider the radiation reaction to the motion of a point-like particle of mass $m$ and specific spin $S$ traveling on a curved background. Assuming $S=O(Gm)$ and $Gm\ll L$ where $L$ is the length scale of the background curvature, we divide the spacetime into two regions; the external region where the metric is approximated by the background metric plus perturbations due to a point-like particle and the internal region where the metric is approximated by that of a black hole plus perturbations due to the tidal effect of the background curvature, and use the technique of the matched asymptotic expansion to construct an approximate metric which is valid over the entire region. In this way, we avoid the divergent self-gravity at the position of the particle and derive the equations of motion from the consistency condition of the matching. The matching is done to the order necessary to include the effect of radiation reaction of $O(Gm)$ with respect to the background metric as well as the effect of spin-induced force. The reaction term of $O(Gm)$ is found to be completely due to tails of radiation, that is, due to curvature scattering of gravitational waves. In other words, the reaction force is found to depend on the entire history of the particle trajectory. Defining a regularized metric which consists of the back- ground metric plus the tail part of the perturbed metric, we find the equations of motion reduce to the geodesic equation on this regularized metric, except for the spin-induced force which is locally expressed in terms of the curvature and spin tensors. Some implications of the result and future issues are briefly discussed.

Gravitational Waves from Coalescing Black Hole MACHO Binaries

If MACHOs are black holes of mass about 0.5 solar mass, they must have been formed in the early universe when the temperature was about 1 GeV. We estimate that in this case in our galaxy's halo out to about 50kpc there exist about half billion black hole binaries whose coalescence times are comparable to the age of the universe, so that the coalescence rate will be about five hundredth events/year/galaxy. This suggests that we can expect a few events/year within 15Mpc. The gravitational waves from such coalescing black hole MACHOs can be detected by the first generation of interferometers in the LIGO/VIRGO/TAMA/GEO network. Therefore, the existence of black hole MACHOs can be tested within the next five years by gravitational waves.

Canonical Quantization of Cosmological Perturbations in the One Bubble Open Universe

Faddeev and Jackiw's method for constrained systems is used to derive a gauge invariant formulation of cosmological perturbations in the one bubble inflationary universe. For scalar perturbations in a flat universe, reduction of the action to the one with a single physical degree of freedom has been derived in the literature. A straightforward generalization of it to the case of an open universe is possible but it is not adequate for quantizing perturbations in the one bubble universe, because of the lack of Cauchy surfaces inside the bubble. Therefore we perform the reduction of the action outside the lightcone emanating from the center of the bubble or nucleation event, where the natural time constant hypersurfaces are no longer homogeneous and isotropic and as a result the conventional classification of perturbations in terms of scalar and tensor modes is not possible. Nevertheless, after reduction of the action we find three decoupled actions for three independent degrees of freedom, one of which corresponds to the scalar mode and the other two to the tensor modes. Implications for the one bubble open inflationary models are briefly discussed. As an application of our formalism, the spectrum of long wavelength gravity waves is simply obtained in terms of the real part of the reflection amplitude for a one dimensional scattering problem, where the potential barrier is given in terms of the bubble profile.

Gravitational Radiation Reaction to a Particle Motion II: Spinning Particle

We discuss the leading order correction to the equation of motion of a particle with spin on an arbitrary spacetime. A particle traveling in a curved spacetime is known to trace a geodesic of the background spacetime if the mass of the particle is negligibly small. For a spinning particle, it is known that there appears a term due to the coupling of the spin and the Riemann tensor of the background spacetime. Recently we have found the equation of motion of a non-spinning particle which includes the effect of gravitational radiation reaction. This paper is devoted to discussion of a consistent derivation of the equation of motion which is corrected both by the spin-Riemann coupling and the gravitational radiation reaction.

Wall fluctuation modes and tensor CMB anisotropy in open inflation models

We calculate the spectrum of large angle cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies due to quantum fluctuations of the gravitational wave modes in one-bubble open inflation models. We find the bubble-wall fluctuation modes, which had been thought to exist discretely in previous analyses, are actually contained in the continuous spectrum of gravitational wave modes when the gravitational coupling is correctly taken into account. Then we find that the spectrum of the tensor CMB anisotropy can be decomposed into the part due to the wall fluctuation modes and that due to the usual gravitational wave modes in a way which is almost model-independent, even when the gravitational coupling is strong. We also discuss observational constraints on the model parameters. We find that an appreciable portion of the parameter space is excluded but the remaining allowable region is still wide enough to leave the one-bubble scenario viable.

The Spectrum of Gravitational Wave Perturbations in the One-Bubble Open Inflationary Universe

We give the initial spectrum of quantized gravitational waves in the context of the one-bubble open inflationary universe scenario. In determining the quantum state after the bubble nucleation we adopt the prescription to require the analyticity of positive frequency functions in half of the Euclidean extension of the background O(3,1)-symmetric spacetime. We find the spectrum is well behaved at the infrared limit and there appears no supercurvature mode. In the thin wall approximation, the explicit form of the spectrum of gravitational wave perturbations is calculated.

Quantized gravitational waves in the Milne universe

The quantization of gravitational waves in the Milne universe is discussed. The relation between positive frequency functions of the gravitational waves in the Milne universe and those in the Minkowski universe is clarified. Implications to the one-bubble open inflation scenario are also discussed.

Gravitational Radiation Reaction to a Particle Motion

In this paper, we discuss the leading order correction to the equation of motion of the particle, which presumably describes the effect of gravitational radiation reaction. We derive the equation of motion in two different ways. The first one is an extension of the well-known formalism by DeWitt and Brehme developed for deriving the equation of motion of an electrically charged particle. In contrast to the electromagnetic case, in which there are two different charges, i.e., the electric charge and the mass, the gravitational counterpart has only one charge. This fact prevents us from using the same renormalization scheme that was used in the electromagnetic case. To make clear the subtlety in the first approach, we then consider the asymptotic matching of two different schemes, i.e., the internal scheme in which the small particle is represented by a spherically symmetric black hole with tidal perturbations and the external scheme in which the metric is given by small perturbations on the given background geometry. The equation of motion is obtained from the consistency condition of the matching. We find that in both ways the same equation of motion is obtained. The resulting equation of motion is analogous to that derived in the electromagnetic case. We discuss implications of this equation of motion.

Quantum fluctuations and CMB anisotropies in one-bubble open inflation models

We first develop a method to calculate a complete set of mode functions which describe the quantum fluctuations generated in one-bubble open inflation models. We consider two classes of models. One is a single scalar field model proposed by Bucher, Goldhaber and Turok and by us as an example of the open inflation scinario, and the other is a two-field model such as the ``supernatural'' inflation proposed by Linde and Mezhlumian. In both cases we assume the difference in the vacuum energy density between inside and outside the bubble is negligible. There are two kinds of mode functions. One kind has usual continuous spectrum and the other has discrete spectrum with characteristic wavelengths exceeding the spatial curvature scale. The latter can be further devided into two classes in terms of its origin. One is called the de Sitter super-curvature mode, which arises due to the global spacetime structure of de Sitter space, and the other is due to fluctuations of the bubble wall. We calculate the spectrum of quantum fluctuations in these models and evaluate the resulting large angular scale CMB anisotropies. We find there are ranges of model parameters that are consistent with observed CMB anisotropies.

Can the Simplest Two-Field Model of Open Inflation Survive?

We investigate the quantum fluctuations of an inflaton field in a two-field model of one-bubble open inflation. One of the inflatons is assumed to be responsible for the first false vacuum stage of inflation and the other is assumed to be responsible for the second slow-roll stage of inflation. The mass of the second inflaton is assumed to be negligible throughout the whole era of inflation. We find the super-curvature fluctuations are enhanced by the factor given by the ratio of the Hubble constants at false vacuum and true vacuum. This gives a strong constraint on a class of open inflation models. In particular, this implies the simplest two-field model proposed by Linde and Mezhlumian is in trouble.
