A viable explanation of the CMB dipolar statistical anisotropy

The presence of a dipolar statistical anisotropy in the spectrum of cosmic microwave background (CMB) fluctuations was reported by the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP), and has recently been confirmed in the Planck 2013 analysis of the temperature anisotropies. At the same time, the Planck 2013 results report a stringent bound on the amplitude of the local-type non-Gaussianity. We show that the non-linear effect of the dipolar anisotropy generates not only a quadrupole moment in the CMB but also a local-type non-Gaussianity. Consequently, it is not easy to build models having a large dipolar modulation and at the same time a sufficiently small quadrupole and level of local bispectral anisotropy to agree with the present data. In particular, most models proposed so far are almost excluded, or are at best marginally consistent with observational data. We present a simple alternative scenario that may explain the dipolar statistical anisotropy while satisfying the observational bounds on both the quadrupole moment and local-type non-Gaussianity.

Coleman-de Luccia instanton in dRGT massive gravity

We study the Coleman-de Luccia (CDL) instanton characterizing the tunneling from a false vacuum to the true vacuum in a semi-classical way in dRGT (deRham-Gabadadze-Tolley) massive gravity theory, and evaluate the dependence of the tunneling rate on the model parameters. It is found that provided with the same physical Hubble parameters for the true vacuum $H_{\rm T}$ and the false vacuum $H_{\rm F}$ as in General Relativity (GR), the thin-wall approximation method implies the same tunneling rate as GR. However, deviations of tunneling rate from GR arise when one goes beyond the thin-wall approximation and they change monotonically until the Hawking-Moss (HM) case. Moreover, under the thin-wall approximation, the HM process may dominate over the CDL one if the value for the graviton mass is larger than the inverse of the radius of the bubble.

Schwinger effect in de Sitter space

We consider Schwinger pair production in 1+1 dimensional de Sitter space, filled with a constant electric field $E$. This can be thought of as a model for describing false vacuum decay beyond the semiclassical approximation, where pairs of a quantum field $ϕ$ of mass $m$ and charge $e$ play the role of vacuum bubbles. We find that the adiabatic "in" vacuum associated with the flat chart develops a space-like expectation value for the current $J$, which manifestly breaks the de Sitter invariance of the background fields. We derive a simple expression for $J(E)$, showing that both "upward" and "downward" tunneling contribute to the build-up of the current. For heavy fields, with $m^2\gg eE,H^2$, the current is exponentially suppressed, in agreement with the results of semiclassical instanton methods. Here $H$ is the inverse de Sitter radius. On the other hand, light fields with $ m \ll H$ lead to a phenomenon of infrared hyperconductivity, where a very small electric field $mH \lesssim eE \ll H^2$ leads to a very large current $J \sim H^3 /E$. We also show that all Hadamard states for $ϕ$ necessarily break de Sitter invariance. Finally, we comment on the role of initial conditions, and "persistence of memory" effects.

Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal in dRGT massive gravity: Making inflation exponentially more probable

It is known that the no-boundary proposal in the traditional Einstein gravity does not prefer inflation, that is, the probability of realizing a large number of e-folds is exponentially suppressed. This situation may be changed drastically in a class of nonlinear massive gravity theories recently proposed by deRham, Gabadadze and Tolley, called dRGT massive gravity. We show that the contribution from the massive gravity sector can enhance the probability of a large number of e-folds substantially for a sufficiently large mass parameter mg comparable to the Hubble parameter during inflation, say $m_g \gtrsim 10^{12}$ GeV. We illustrate possible models to trigger such a large mass parameter in the early universe while it is negligibly small in the present universe. This opens a new window to explore the inflationary scenario in the context of quantum cosmology.

Non-linear curvature perturbation in multi-field inflation models with non-minimal coupling

Using the δN formalism we consider the non-linear curvature perturbation in multi-field models of inflation with non-minimal coupling. In particular, we focus on the relation between the δN formalism as applied in the conformally related Jordan and Einstein frames. Exploiting results already known in the Einstein frame, we give expressions for the power spectrum, spectral tilt and non-gaussianity associated with the Jordan frame curvature perturbation. In the case that an adiabatic limit has not been reached, we find that in general these quantities differ from those associated with the Einstein frame curvature perturbation, and also confirm their equivalence in the absence of isocurvature modes. We then proceed to consider two analytically soluble examples, the first involving a non-minimally coupled `spectator' field and the second being a non-minimally coupled extension of the multi-brid inflation model. In the first model we find that predictions can easily be brought into agreement with the recent Planck results, as the tensor-to-scalar ratio is generally small, the spectral tilt tuneable and the non-gaussianity suppressed. In the second model we find that predictions for all three parameters can differ substantially from those predicted in the minimally coupled case, and that the recent Planck results for the spectral tilt can be used to constrain the non-minimal coupling parameters.

Fluid Inflation

In this work we present an inflationary mechanism based on fluid dynamics. Starting with the action for a single barotropic perfect fluid, we outline the procedure to calculate the power spectrum and the bispectrum of the curvature perturbation. It is shown that a perfect barotropic fluid naturally gives rise to a non-attractor inflationary universe in which the curvature perturbation is not frozen on super-horizon scales. We show that a scale-invariant power spectrum can be obtained with the local non-Gaussianity parameter $f_{NL}= 5/2$.

A Single Field Inflation Model with Large Local Non-Gaussianity

A detection of large local form non-Gaussianity is considered to be able to rule out all single field inflation models. This statement is based on a single field consistency condition. Despite the awareness of some implicit assumptions in the derivation of this condition and the demonstration of corresponding examples that illustrate these caveats, to date there is still no explicit and self-consistent model which can serve as a counterexample to this statement. We present such a model in this Letter.

In-in and $δN$ calculations of the bispectrum from non-attractor single-field inflation

In non-attractor single-field inflation models producing a scale-invariant power spectrum, the curvature perturbation on super-horizon scales grows as ${\cal R}\propto a^3$. This is so far the only known class of self-consistent single-field models with a Bunch-Davies initial state that can produce a large squeezed-limit bispectrum violating Maldacena's consistency relation. Given the importance of this result, we calculate the bispectrum with three different methods: using quantum field theory calculations in two different gauges, and classical calculations (the $δN$ formalism). All the results agree, giving the local-form bispectrum parameter of $f^{local}_{NL}=5(1+c_s^2)/(4c_s^2)$. This result is valid for arbitrary values of the speed of sound parameter, $c_s$, for a particular non-attractor model we consider in this paper.

Equilateral non-Gaussianity from heavy fields

The effect of self-interactions of heavy scalar fields during inflation on the primordial non-Gaussianity is studied. We take a specific constant-turn quasi-single field inflation as an example. We derive an effective theory with emphasis on non-linear self-interactions of heavy fields and calculate the corresponding non-Gaussianity, which is of equilateral type and can be as relevant as those computed previously in the literature. We also derive the non-Gaussianity by directly using the in-in formalism, and verify the equivalence of these two approaches.

Second order Boltzmann equation : gauge dependence and gauge invariance

In the context of cosmological perturbation theory, we derive the second order Boltzmann equation describing the evolution of the distribution function of radiation without a specific gauge choice. The essential steps in deriving the Boltzmann equation are revisited and extended given this more general framework: i) the polarisation of light is incorporated in this formalism by using a tensor-valued distribution function; ii) the importance of a choice of the tetrad field to define the local inertial frame in the description of the distribution function is emphasized; iii) we perform a separation between temperature and spectral distortion, both for the intensity and for polarisation for the first time; iv) the gauge dependence of all perturbed quantities that enter the Boltzmann equation is derived, and this enables us to check the correctness of the perturbed Boltzmann equation by explicitly showing its gauge-invariance for both intensity and polarization. We finally discuss several implications of the gauge dependence for the observed temperature.

Observer dependence of bubble nucleation and Schwinger pair production

Pair production in a constant electric field is closely analogous to bubble nucleation in a false vacuum. The classical trajectories of the pairs are Lorentz invariant, but it appears that this invariance should be broken by the nucleation process. Here, we use a model detector, consisting of other particles interacting with the pairs, to investigate how pair production is seen by different Lorentzian observers. We focus on the idealized situation where a constant external electric field is present for an infinitely long time, and we consider the in-vacuum state for a charged scalar field that describes the nucleating pairs. The in-vacuum is defined in terms of modes which are positive frequency in the remote past. Even though the construction uses a particular reference frame and a gauge where the vector potential is time dependent, we show explicitly that the resulting quantum state is Lorentz invariant. We then introduce a "detector" particle which interacts with the nucleated pairs, and show that all Lorentzian observers will see the particles and antiparticles nucleating preferentially at rest in the detector's rest frame. Similar conclusions are expected to apply to bubble nucleation in a sufficiently long lived vacuum. We also comment on certain unphysical aspects of the Lorentz invariant in-vacuum, associated with the fact that it contains an infinite density of particles. This can be easily remedied by considering Lorentz breaking initial conditions.

Squeezed primordial bispectrum from general vacuum state

We study the general relation between the power spectrum and the squeezed limit of the bispectrum of the comoving curvature perturbation produced during single-field slow-roll inflation when the initial state is a general vacuum. Assuming the scale invariance of the power spectrum, we derive a formula for the squeezed limit of the bispectrum, represented by the parameter fNL, which is not slow-roll suppressed and is found to contain a single free parameter for a given amplitude of the power spectrum. Then we derive the conditions for achieving a scale-invariant fNL, and discuss a few examples.

Observable induced gravitational waves from an early matter phase

Assuming that inflation is succeeded by a phase of matter domination, which corresponds to a low temperature of reheating $T_r<10^9\rm{GeV}$, we evaluate the spectra of gravitational waves induced in the post-inflationary universe. We work with models of hilltop-inflation with an enhanced primordial scalar spectrum on small scales, which can potentially lead to the formation of primordial black holes. We find that a lower reheat temperature leads to the production of gravitational waves with energy densities within the ranges of both space and earth based gravitational wave detectors.

Multiple Inflationary Stages with Varying Equation of State

We consider a model of inflation consisting a single fluid with a time-dependent equation of state. In this phenomenological picture, two periods of inflation are separated by an intermediate non-inflationary stage which can be either a radiation dominated, matter dominated or kinetic energy dominated universe, respectively, with the equation of state $w=1/3$, 0 or 1. We consider the toy model in which the change in $w$ happens instantaneously. Depending on whether the mode of interest leaves the horizon before or after or between the phase transitions, the curvature power spectrum can have non-trivial sinusoidal modulations. This can have interesting observational implications for CMB anisotropies and for primordial black-hole formation.

Violation of non-Gaussianity consistency relation in a single field inflationary model

In this paper we present a simple, toy model of single field inflation in which the standard non-Gaussianity consistency condition is violated. In this model the curvature perturbations on super-horizon scales are not conserved and the decaying modes of perturbations are not negligible in the non-atractor phase. As a result a large local non-Gaussianity can be obtained in the squeezed limit which violates the standard non-Gaussianity consistency condition for the single field models.

Hawking-Moss instanton in nonlinear massive gravity

As a first step toward understanding a lanscape of vacua in a theory of non-linear massive gravity, we consider a landscape of a single scalar field and study tunneling between a pair of adjacent vacua. We study the Hawking-Moss (HM) instanton that sits at a local maximum of the potential, and evaluate the dependence of the tunneling rate on the parameters of the theory. It is found that provided with the same physical HM Hubble parameter $H_{HM}$, depending on the values of parameters $α_3$ and $α_4$ in the action, the corresponding tunneling rate can be either enhanced or suppressed when compared to the one in the context of General Relativity (GR). Furthermore, we find the constraint on the ratio of the physical Hubble parameter to the fiducial one, which constrains the form of potential. This result is in sharp contrast to GR where there is no bound on the minimum value of the potential.

Effects of inhomogeneities on apparent cosmological observables: "fake" evolving dark energy

Using the exact Lemaitre-Bondi-Tolman solution with a non-vanishing cosmological constant $Λ$, we investigate how the presence of a local spherically-symmetric inhomogeneity can affect apparent cosmological observables, such as the deceleration parameter or the effective equation of state of dark energy (DE), derived from the luminosity distance under the assumption that the real space-time is exactly homogeneous and isotropic. The presence of a local underdensity is found to produce apparent phantom behavior of DE, while a locally overdense region leads to apparent quintessence behavior. We consider relatively small large scale inhomogeneities which today are not linear and could be seeded by primordial curvature perturbations compatible with CMB bounds. Our study shows how observations in an inhomogeneous $Λ$CDM universe with initial conditions compatible with the inflationary beginning, if interpreted under the wrong assumption of homogeneity, can lead to the wrong conclusion about the presence of "fake" evolving dark energy instead of $Λ$.

Curvature Perturbation Spectrum in Two-field Inflation with a Turning Trajectory

We revisit a two-component inflaton model with a turning trajectory in the field space, where the field slowly rolls down along the trajectory. We consider the case when the effective mass in the direction perpendicular to the trajectory, namely the isocurvature direction, is either of the same order as or much larger than the Hubble parameter. Assuming that the turning angular velocity is small, we compute analytically the corrections to the power spectrum of curvature perturbation caused by the mediation of the heavy isocurvature perturbation, and compare our analytic results with the numerical ones. Especially, when M_{eff}^2>>H^2, we find that it is proportional to M_{eff}^{-2}. This result is consistent with the one obtained previously by an effective field theory approach.
