Holomorphic Lagrangian subvarieties in holomorphic symplectic manifolds with Lagrangian fibrations and special Kahler geometry

Let $M$ be a holomorphic symplectic Kähler manifold equipped with a Lagrangian fibration $π$ with compact fibers. The base of this manifold is equipped with a special Kähler structure, that is, a Kähler structure $(I, g, ω)$ and a symplectic flat connection $\nabla$ such that the metric $g$ is locally the Hessian of a function. We prove that any Lagrangian subvariety $Z\subset M$ which intersects smooth fibers of $π$ and smoothly projects to $π(Z)$ is a toric fibration over its image $π(Z)$ in $B$, and this image is also special Kähler. This answers a question of N. Hitchin related to Kapustin-Witten BBB/BAA duality.

Contraction centers in families of hyperkahler manifolds

We study the exceptional loci of birational (bimeromorphic) contractions of a hyperkähler manifold $M$. Such a contraction locus is the union of all minimal rational curves in a collection of cohomology classes which are orthogonal to a wall of the Kähler cone. Homology classes which can possibly be orthogonal to a wall of the Kähler cone of some deformation of $M$ are called MBM classes. We prove that all MBM classes of type (1,1) can be represented by rational curves, called MBM curves. All MBM curves can be contracted on an appropriate birational model of $M$, unless $b_2(M) \leq 5$. When $b_2(M)>5$, this property can be used as an alternative definition of an MBM class and an MBM curve. Using the results of Bakker and Lehn, we prove that the diffeomorphism type of a contraction locus remains stable under all deformations for which these classes remains of type (1,1), unless the contracted variety has $b_2\leq 4$. Moreover, these diffeomorphisms preserve the MBM curves, and induce biholomorphic maps on the contraction fibers, if they are normal.

Unobstructed symplectic packing for tori and hyperkahler manifolds

Let M be a closed symplectic manifold of volume V. We say that M admits an unobstructed symplectic packing by balls if any collection of symplectic balls (of possibly different radii) of total volume less than V admits a symplectic embedding to M. In 1994 McDuff and Polterovich proved that symplectic packings of Kahler manifolds can be characterized in terms of the Kahler cones of their blow-ups. When M is a Kahler manifold which is not a union of its proper subvarieties (such a manifold is called Campana simple) these Kahler cones can be described explicitly using the Demailly and Paun structure theorem. We prove that any Campana simple Kahler manifold, as well as any manifold which is a limit of Campana simple manifolds in a smooth deformation, admits an unobstructed symplectic packing by balls. This is used to show that all even-dimensional tori equipped with Kahler symplectic forms and all hyperkahler manifolds of maximal holonomy admit unobstructed symplectic packings by balls. This generalizes a previous result by Latschev-McDuff-Schlenk. We also consider symplectic packings by other shapes and show, using Ratner's orbit closure theorem, that any even-dimensional torus equipped with a Kahler form whose cohomology class is not proportional to a rational one admits a full symplectic packing by any number of equal polydisks (and, in particular, by any number of equal cubes).

Kobayashi pseudometric on hyperkahler manifolds

The Kobayashi pseudometric on a complex manifold is the maximal pseudometric such that any holomorphic map from the Poincaré disk to the manifold is distance-decreasing. Kobayashi has conjectured that this pseudometric vanishes on Calabi-Yau manifolds. Using ergodicity of complex structures, we prove this conjecture for any hyperkähler manifold that admits a deformation with two Lagrangian fibrations and whose Picard rank is not maximal. The Strominger-Yau-Zaslow (SYZ) conjecture claims that parabolic nef line bundles on hyperkähler manifolds are semi-ample. We prove that the Kobayashi pseudometric vanishes for any hyperkähler manifold with $b_2\geq 13$ if the SYZ conjecture holds for all its deformations. This proves the Kobayashi conjecture for all K3 surfaces and their Hilbert schemes.

Closed orbits of Reeb fields on Sasakian manifolds and elliptic curves on Vaisman manifolds

A compact complex manifold $V$ is called Vaisman if it admits an Hermitian metric which is conformal to a Kähler one, and a non-isometric conformal action by $\mathbb C$. It is called quasi-regular if the $\mathbb C$-action has closed orbits. In this case the corresponding leaf space is a projective orbifold, called the quasi-regular quotient of $V$. It is known that the set of all quasi-regular Vaisman complex structures is dense in the appropriate deformation space. We count the number of closed elliptic curves on a Vaisman manifold, proving that their number is either infinite or equal to the sum of all Betti numbers of a Kähler orbifold obtained as a quasi-regular quotient of $V$. We also give a new proof of a result by Rukimbira showing that the number of Reeb orbits on a Sasakian manifold $M$ is either infinite or equal to the sum of all Betti numbers of a Kähler orbifold obtained as an $S^1$-quotient of $M$.

Algebraic dimension and complex subvarieties of hypercomplex nilmanifolds

A nilmanifold is a (left) quotient of a nilpotent Lie group by a cocompact lattice. A hypercomplex structure on a manifold is a triple of complex structure operators satisfying the quaternionic relations. A hypercomplex nilmanifold is a compact quotient of a nilpotent Lie group equipped with a left-invariant hypercomplex structure. Such a manifold admits a whole 2-dimensional sphere $S^2$ of complex structures induced by quaternions. We prove that for any hypercomplex nilmanifold $M$ and a generic complex structure $L\in S^2$, the complex manifold $(M,L)$ has algebraic dimension 0. A stronger result is proven when the hypercomplex nilmanifold is abelian. Consider the Lie algebra of left-invariant vector fields of Hodge type (1,0) on the corresponding nilpotent Lie group with respect to some complex structure $I\in S^2$. A hypercomplex nilmanifold is called abelian when this Lie algebra is abelian. We prove that all complex subvarieties of $(M,L)$ for generic $L\in S^2$ on a hypercomplex abelian nilmanifold are also hypercomplex nilmanifolds.

Locally conformally Kahler manifolds admitting a holomorphic conformal flow

A manifold $M$ is locally conformally Kahler (LCK) if it admits a Kahler covering with monodromy acting by holomorphic homotheties. Let $M$ be an LCK manifold admitting a holomorphic conformal flow of diffeomorphisms, lifted to a non-isometric homothetic flow on its covering. We show that $M$ admits an automorphic potential. This version was added 10 years after publication to correct some errors in the original.

Classification of holomorphic Pfaff systems on Hopf manifolds

We classify holomorphic Pfaff systems (possibly non locally decomposable) on certain Hopf manifolds. As consequence, we prove some integrability results. We also prove that any holomorphic distribution on a general (non-resonance) Hopf manifold is integrable.

Rational curves and MBM classes on hyperkahler manifolds: a survey

This paper deals with rational curves and birational contractions on irreducible holomorphically symplectic manifold. We survey some recent results about minimal rational curves, their deformations, extremal rays associated with these curves, and the geometry of the Kähler cone.

Sections of Lagrangian fibrations on holomorphically symplectic manifolds and degenerate twistorial deformations

Let $(M,I, Ω)$ be a holomorphically symplectic manifold equipped with a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration $π:\; M \mapsto X$, and $η$ a closed form of Hodge type (1,1)+(2,0) on $X$. We prove that $Ω':=Ω+π^* η$ is again a holomorphically symplectic form, for another complex structure $I'$, which is uniquely determined by $Ω'$. The corresponding deformation of complex structures is called "degenerate twistorial deformation". The map $π$ is holomorphic with respect to this new complex structure, and $X$ and the fibers of $π$ retain the same complex structure as before. Let $s$ be a smooth section of of $π$. We prove that there exists a degenerate twistorial deformation $(M,I', Ω')$ such that $s$ is a holomorphic section.

Twisted Dolbeault cohomology of nilpotent Lie algebras

It is well known that cohomology of any non-trivial 1-dimensional local system on a nilmanifold vanishes (this result is due to L. Alaniya). A complex nilmanifold is a quotient of a nilpotent Lie group equipped with a left-invariant complex structure by an action of a discrete, co-compact subgroup. We prove a Dolbeault version of Alaniya's theorem, showing that the Dolbeault cohomology of a nilpotent Lie algebra with coefficients in any non-trivial 1-dimensional local system vanishes. Note that the Dolbeault cohomology of the corresponding local system on the manifold is not necessarily zero. This implies that the twisted version of Console-Fino theorem is false (Console-Fino proved that the Dolbeault cohomology of a complex nilmanifold is equal to the Dolbeault cohomology of its Lie algebra). As an application, we give a new proof of a theorem due to H. Sawai, who obtained an explicit description of LCK nilmanifolds. An LCK structure on a manifold $M$ is a Kähler structure on its cover $\tilde M$ such that the deck transform map acts on $\tilde M$ by homotheties. We show that any complex nilmanifold admitting an LCK structure is Vaisman, and is obtained as a compact quotient of the product of a Heisenberg group and the real line.

Mapping class group and global Torelli theorem for hyperkahler manifolds: an erratum

A mapping class group of an oriented manifold is a quotient of its diffeomorphism group by the isotopies. In the published version of "Mapping class group and a global Torelli theorem for hyperkahler manifolds" I made an error based on a wrong quotation of Dennis Sullivan's famous paper "Infinitesimal computations in topology". I claimed that the natural homomorphism from the mapping class group to the group of automorphims of cohomology of a simply connected Kahler manifold has finite kernel. In a recent preprint arXiv:1907.05693, Matthias Kreck and Yang Su produced counterexamples to this statement. Here I correct this error and other related errors, observing that the results of "Mapping class group and a global Torelli theorem" remain true after an appropriate change of terminology.

Structure theorem for compact Vaisman manifolds

A locally conformally Kaehler (l.c.K.) manifold is a complex manifold admitting a Kaehler covering $\tilde M$, with each deck transformation acting by Kaehler homotheties. A compact l.c.K. manifold is Vaisman if it admits a holomorphic flow acting by non-trivial homotheties on $\tilde M$. We prove a structure theorem for compact Vaisman manifolds. Every compact Vaisman manifold M is fibered over a circle, the fibers are Sasakian, the fibration is locally trivial, and M is reconstructed as a Riemannian suspension from the Sasakian structure on the fibers and the monodromy automorphism induced by this fibration. This construction is canonical and functorial in both directions.

Deformations and BBF form on non-Kahler holomorphically symplectic manifolds

In 1995, Dan Guan constructed examples of non-Kahler, simply-connected holomorphically symplectic manifolds. An alternative construction, using the Hilbert scheme of Kodaira-Thurston surface, was given by F. Bogomolov. We investigate topology and deformation theory of Bogomolov-Guan manifolds and show that it is similar to that of hyperkahler manifolds. We prove the local Torelli theorem, showing that holomorphically symplectic deformations of BG-manifolds are unobstructed, and the corresponding period map is locally a diffeomorphism. Using the local Torelli theorem, we prove the Fujiki formula for a BG-manifold $M$, showing that there exists a symmetric form q on the second cohomology such that for any $w\in H^2(M)$ one has $\int_M w^{2n}=q(w,w)^n$. This form is a non-Kahler version of the Beauville-Bogomolov-Fujiki form known in hyperkahler geometry.

MBM classes and contraction loci on low-dimensional hyperkahler manifolds of K3 type

An MBM locus on a hyperkahler manifold is the union of all deformations of a minimal rational curve with negative self-intersection. MBM loci can be equivalently defined as centers of bimeromorphic contractions. It was shown that the MBM loci on deformation equivalent hyperkahler manifolds are diffeomorphic. We determine the MBM loci on a hyperkahler manifold of K3-type of low dimension using a deformation to a Hilbert scheme of a non-algebraic K3 surface.

Locality in the Fukaya category of a hyperkähler manifold

Let $(M,I,J,K,g)$ be a hyperkähler manifold. Then the complex manifold $(M,I)$ is holomorphic symplectic. We prove that for all real $x, y,$ with $x^2 + y^2 = 1$ except countably many, any finite energy $(xJ+yK)$-holomorphic curve with boundary in a collection of $I$-holomorphic Lagrangians must be constant. By an argument based on the Lojasiewicz inequality, this result holds no matter how the Lagrangians intersect each other. It follows that one can choose perturbations such that the holomorphic polygons of the associated Fukaya category lie in an arbitrarily small neighborhood of the Lagrangians. That is, the Fukaya category is local. We show that holomorphic Lagrangians are tautologically unobstructed in the sense of Fukaya-Oh-Ohta-Ono. Moreover, the Fukaya $A_\infty$ algebra of a holomorphic Lagrangian is formal. Our result also explains why the special Lagrangian condition holds without instanton corrections for holomorphic Lagrangians.
