Confess What You Know: Forget-Set Misalignment with Model Knowledge in LLM Unlearning

Machine unlearning for large language models (LLMs) often assumes that a pre-defined forget set matches what the model has memorized, but this frequently breaks in realistic privacy settings where the original training data is inaccessible. We term this gap forget-set misalignment and identify two cases. In Under Unlearning, the forget set omits memorized information and leakage persists. In Out-of-Knowledge Unlearning, the algorithm is driven to "forget" knowledge the model never learned, perturbing parameters and degrading utility. Using gradient-level analysis, we show these behaviors arise from misaligned unlearning targets rather than specific optimization choices. We then propose CONfession-to-Forget-Set (CONFS), a data-blind framework that constructs model-aligned forget sets by eliciting and formalizing the model's memorized knowledge. Across synthetic, multimodal, and real-world benchmarks, CONFS approaches Gold-standard performance on several metrics and achieves a competitive forgetting-utility balance, while preserving utility better than other data-blind forget-set constructions.

Co-occurring Associated REtained concepts in Diffusion Unlearning

Unlearning has emerged as a key technique to mitigate harmful content generation in diffusion models. However, existing methods often remove not only the target concept, but also benign co-occurring concepts. As illustrated in Fig.1, unlearning nudity can unintentionally suppress the concept of person, preventing a model from generating images with person. We define these undesirably suppressed co-occurring concepts that must be preserved CARE (Co-occurring Associated REtained concepts). Then, we introduce the CARE score, a general metric that directly quantifies their preservation across unlearning tasks. With this foundation, we propose ReCARE (Robust erasure for CARE), a framework that explicitly safeguards CARE while erasing only the target concept. ReCARE automatically constructs the CARE-set, a curated vocabulary of benign co-occurring tokens extracted from target images, and leverages this vocabulary during training for stable unlearning. Extensive experiments across various target concepts (Nudity, Van Gogh style, and Tench object) demonstrate that ReCARE achieves overall state-of-the-art performance in balancing robust concept erasure, overall utility, and CARE preservation.

Supporting Aging Well through Accessible Digital Games: The Supplemental Role of AI in Game Design for Older Adults

As the population continues to age, and gaming continues to grow as a hobby for older people, heterogeneity among older adult gamers is increasing. We argue that traditional game-based accessibility features, such as simplified input schemes, redundant information channels, and increased legibility of digital user interfaces, are increasingly limited in the face of this heterogeneity. This is because such features affect all older adult players simultaneously and therefore are designed generically. We introduce artificial intelligence, although it has its own limitations and ethical concerns, as a method of creating player-based accessibility features, given the adaptive nature of the emerging technology. These accessibility features may help to address unique assemblage of accessibility needs an individual may accumulate through age. We adopt insights from gerontology, HCI, and disability studies into the digital game design discourse for older adults, and we contribute insight that can guide the integration of player-based accessibility features to supplement game-based counterparts. The accessibility of digital games for heterogenous older adult audience is paramount, as the medium offers short-term social, emotional, psychological, cognitive, and physical that support the long-term goal of aging well.

Integrating Artificial Intelligence as Assistive Technology for Older Adult Gamers: A Pilot Study

With respect to digital games, older adults are a demographic that is often underserved due to an industry-wide focus on younger audiences' preferences and skill sets. Meanwhile, as artificial intelligence (AI) continues to expand into everyday technologies, its assistive capabilities have been recognized, suggesting its potential in improving the gaming experience for older gamers. To study this potential, we iteratively developed a pilot survey aimed at understanding older adult gamers' current gameplay preference, challenges they are facing, and their perspectives of AI usage in gaming. This article contributes an overview of our iterative survey-design workflow, and pilot results from 39 participants. During each iteration, we analyzed the survey's efficacy and adjusted the content, language, and format to better capture meaningful data, and was able to create a refined survey for a larger, more representative future parent study. At the same time, preliminary findings suggest that for older adult gamers, usability issues in gaming remain key obstacles, while this demographic's perceptions of AI are shaped by both its practical benefits and concerns about autonomy and complexity. These findings also offer early insights for the design of age-inclusive, AI-supported gaming experiences.

Topological rainbow trapping and broadband piezoelectric energy harvesting of acoustic waves in gradient phononic crystals with coupled interfaces

Topological phononic crystals (PCs) offer an innovative method for manipulating acoustic or elastic waves. In this study, we introduce the gradient PC structures with coupled interfaces, specifically designed to achieve topological rainbow trapping and broadband acoustic energy harvesting. By leveraging the geometric symmetry of PC unit cells, we merge two PCs with distinct topological phases to create coupled topological interfaces. Gradient modulation of structural parameters along the coupled interfaces induces rainbow trapping, where acoustic waves are spatially separated by frequency. The numerical and experimental results indicate that the acoustic waves of various frequencies are halted and magnified at distinct locations within the coupled interfaces. Compared to the bare harvester, the topological PC energy harvester markedly increases output power across a range of excitation frequencies, with a maximum amplification ratio of 91 observed in experiments. Furthermore, the topological rainbow trapping is robust against random structural disorders. The coupled interfaces exhibit broadband and multimodal capabilities, holding potential for various applications including selective filtering and enhanced sensing.

What Do We Mean When We Talk about Trust in Social Media? A Systematic Review

Do people trust social media? If so, why, in what contexts, and how does that trust impact their lives? Researchers, companies, and journalists alike have increasingly investigated these questions, which are fundamental to understanding social media interactions and their implications for society. However, trust in social media is a complex concept, and there is conflicting evidence about the antecedents and implications of trusting social media content, users, and platforms. More problematic is that we lack basic agreement as to what trust means in the context of social media. Addressing these challenges, we conducted a systematic review to identify themes and challenges in this field. Through our analysis of 70 papers, we contribute a synthesis of how trust in social media is defined, conceptualized, and measured, a summary of trust antecedents in social media, an understanding of how trust in social media impacts behaviors and attitudes, and directions for future work.

Investigating Older Adults' Attitudes towards Crisis Informatics Tools: Opportunities for Enhancing Community Resilience during Disasters

The world population is projected to rapidly age over the next 30 years. Given the increasing digital technology adoption amongst older adults, researchers have investigated how technology can support aging populations. However, little work has examined how technology can support older adults during crises, despite increasingly common natural disasters, public health emergencies, and other crisis scenarios in which older adults are especially vulnerable. Addressing this gap, we conducted focus groups with older adults residing in coastal locations to examine to what extent they felt technology could support them during emergencies. Our findings characterize participants' desire for tools that enhance community resilience-local knowledge, preparedness, community relationships, and communication, that help communities withstand disasters. Further, older adults' crisis technology preferences were linked to their sense of control, social relationships, and digital readiness. We discuss how a focus on community resilience can yield crisis technologies that more effectively support older adults.

Examining Older Adults' Information Exposure, Wellbeing, and Adherence to Protective Measures During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Older adults are at greater risk of experiencing negative physical and psychological impacts of the novel coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Our ongoing study is assessing COVID-19 information exposure in adults aged 55 and above compared to other age groups living in Massachusetts and Georgia. This work investigates the potential association between information exposure and wellbeing as well as adherence to COVID-19 protective measures. Our initial results show that older adults received information related to COVID-19 less frequently than the middle-aged group, yet they feel more content and less stressed than the other age groups. Further analysis to identify other potential confounding variables is addressed.

Understanding the Use of Crisis Informatics Technology among Older Adults

Mass emergencies increasingly pose significant threats to human life, with a disproportionate burden being incurred by older adults. Research has explored how mobile technology can mitigate the effects of mass emergencies. However, less work has examined how mobile technologies support older adults during emergencies, considering their unique needs. To address this research gap, we interviewed 16 older adults who had recent experience with an emergency evacuation to understand the perceived value of using mobile technology during emergencies. We found that there was a lack of awareness and engagement with existing crisis apps. Our findings characterize the ways in which our participants did and did not feel crisis informatics tools address human values, including basic needs and esteem needs. We contribute an understanding of how older adults used mobile technology during emergencies and their perspectives on how well such tools address human values.
