A Quantum Approach to Stochastic Optimization in Insurance Underwriting

The presence of stochastic elements in combinatorial optimization problems makes them particularly challenging, as such problems quickly become intractable for classical computers even at relatively small sizes. In this work, we propose a novel quantum-classical hybrid scheme for solving a class of stochastic optimization problems known as chance-constrained knapsack problems, in which item weights follow probability distributions and constraints may be violated within a specified risk tolerance. Our method employs knapsack-specific QAOA-based circuits to generate samples which, when combined with a new self-consistent classical recovery scheme introduced in this work, produce high-quality solutions. Experiments carried out on IBM Heron processors, using circuits with depths up to 177 and comprising 3443 gates acting on as many as 150 qubits, yield solutions that indicate performance comparable to classical optimization schemes. The proposed quantum-classical scheme paves the way to tackling such problems, with the potential to outperform approaches that rely solely on classical computation.

Field-tunable quantum disordered ground state in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYbO$_2$

Antiferromagnetically coupled S=1/2 spins on an isotropic triangular lattice is the paradigm of frustrated quantum magnetism, but structurally ideal realizations are rare. Here we investigate NaYbO$_2$, which hosts an ideal triangular lattice of $J_{eff}=1/2$ moments with no inherent site disorder. No signatures of conventional magnetic order appear down to 50 mK, strongly suggesting a quantum spin liquid ground state. We observe a two-peak specific heat and a nearly quadratic temperature dependence in accord with expectations for a two-dimensional Dirac spin liquid. Application of a magnetic field strongly perturbs the quantum disordered ground state and induces a clear transition into a collinear ordered state consistent with a long-predicted up-up-down structure for a triangular lattice XXZ Hamiltonian driven by quantum fluctuations. The observation of spin liquid signatures in zero field and quantum-induced ordering in intermediate fields in the same compound demonstrate an intrinsically quantum disordered ground state. We conclude that NaYbO$_2$ is a model, versatile platform for exploring spin liquid physics with full tunability of field and temperature.

Spin excitations in the frustrated triangular lattice antiferromagnet NaYbO$_2$

Here we present a neutron scattering-based study of magnetic excitations and magnetic order in NaYbO$_2$ under the application of an external magnetic field. The crystal electric field-split $J = 7/2$ multiplet structure is determined, revealing a mixed $|m_z>$ ground state doublet and is consistent with a recent report Ding et al. [1]. Our measurements further suggest signatures of exchange effects in the crystal field spectrum, manifested by a small splitting in energy of the transition into the first excited doublet. The field-dependence of the low-energy magnetic excitations across the transition from the quantum disordered ground state into the fluctuation-driven ordered regime is analyzed. Signs of a first-order phase transition into a noncollinear ordered state are revealed at the upper-field phase boundary of the ordered regime, and higher order magnon scattering, suggestive of strong magnon-magnon interactions, is resolved within the previously reported $up-up-down$ phase. Our results reveal a complex phase diagram of field-induced order and spin excitations within NaYbO$_2$ and demonstrate the dominant role of quantum fluctuations cross a broad range of fields within its interlayer frustrated triangular lattice.

Nanosized helical magnetic domains in strongly frustrated Fe3PO4O3

Fe3PO4O3 forms a non-centrosymmetric lattice structure (space group R3m) comprising triangular motifs of Fe^{3+} coupled by strong antiferromagnetic interactions (|Θ_{CW}| > 900 K). Neutron diffraction from polycrystalline samples shows that strong frustration eventually gives way to an ordered helical incommensurate structure below T_N = 163 K, with the helical axis in the hexagonal ab plane and a modulation length of ~ 86 Å. The magnetic structure consists of an unusual needle-like correlation volume that extends past 900 Åalong the hexagonal c-axis but is limited to ~ 70 Åin the ab plane, despite the three-dimensional nature of the magnetic sublattice topology. The small in-plane correlation length, which persists to at least T = T_N/40, indicates a robust blocking of long-range order of the helical magnetic structure, and therefore stable domain walls, or other defect spin textures, must be abundant in Fe3PO7. Temperature dependent neutron powder diffraction reveals small negative thermal expansion below T_N. No change in lattice symmetry is observed on cooling through T_N, as revealed by high resolution synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The previously reported reduced moment of the Fe^{3+} ions (S=5/2), μ~ 4.2 μ_B, is confirmed here through magnetization studies of a magnetically diluted solid solution series of compounds, Fe3-xGaxPO4O3, and is consistent with the refined magnetic moment from neutron diffraction 4.14(2) μ_B. We attribute the reduced moment to a modified spin density distribution arising from ligand charge transfer in this insulating oxide.
