On the structure of Nevanlinna measures

In this paper, we study the structural properties of Nevanlinna measures, i.e. Borel measures that arise in the integral representation of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions. In particular, we give a characterization of these measures in terms of their Fourier transform, characterize measures supported on hyperplanes including extremal measures, describe the structure of the singular part of the measures when some variable are set to a fixed value, and provide estimates for the measure of expanding and shrinking cubes. Corresponding results are stated also in the setting of the polydisc where applicable, and some of our proofs are actually perfomed via the polydisc.

An analytic characterization of the symmetric extension of a Herglotz-Nevanlinna function in several variables

In this paper, we derive an analytic characterization of the symmetric extension of a Herglotz-Nevanlinna function in several variables. Here, the main tools used are the so-called variable non-dependence property and the symmetry formula satisfied by Herglotz-Nevanlinna function and Cauchy-type functions. We also provide an extension of the Stieltjes inversion formula for Cauchy-type functions.

Characterizations of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions using positive semi-definite functions and the Nevanlinna kernel in several variables

In this paper, we give several characterizations of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions in terms of a specific type of positive semi-definite functions called Poisson-type functions. This allows us to propose a multidimensional analogue of the classical Nevanlinna kernel and a definition of generalized Nevanlinna functions in several variables. Furthermore, a characterization of the symmetric extension of a Herglotz-Nevanlinna function is also given. The subclass of Loewner functions is also discussed, as well as an interpretation of the main result in terms of holomorphic functions on the unit polydisk with non-negative real part.

Characterizations of the Lebesgue measure and product measures related to holomorphic functions having non-negative imaginary or real part

In this paper, we study a class of Borel measures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ that arises as the class of representing measures of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions. In particular, we study product measures within this class where products with the Lebesgue measures play a special role. Hence, we give several characterizations of the $n$-dimensional Lebesgue measure among all such measures and characterize all product measures that appear in this class of measures. Furthermore, analogous results for the class of positive Borel measures on the unit poly-torus with vanishing mixed Fourier coefficients are also presented, and the relation between the two classes of measures with regard to the obtained results is discussed.

On quasi-Herglotz functions in one variable

In this paper, the class of (complex) quasi-Herglotz functions is introduced as the complex vector space generated by the convex cone of ordinary Herglotz functions. We prove characterization theorems, in particular, an analytic characterization. The subclasses of quasi-Herglotz functions that are identically zero in one half-plane as well as rational quasi-Herglotz functions are investigated in detail. Moreover, we relate to other areas such as weighted Hardy spaces, definitizable functions, the Cauchy transform on the unit circle and sum-rule identities.

Quasi-Herglotz functions and convex optimization

We introduce the set of quasi-Herglotz functions and demonstrate that it has properties useful in the modeling of non-passive systems. The linear space of quasi-Herglotz functions constitutes a natural extension of the convex cone of Herglotz functions. It consists of differences of Herglotz functions, and we show that several of the important properties and modeling perspectives are inherited by the new set of quasi-Herglotz functions. In particular, this applies to their integral representations, the associated integral identities or sum rules (with adequate additional assumptions), their boundary values on the real axis and the associated approximation theory. Numerical examples are included to demonstrate the modeling of a non-passive gain media formulated as a convex optimization problem, where the generating measure is modeled by using a finite expansion of B-splines and point masses.

Geometric properties of measures related to holomorphic functions having positive imaginary or real part

In this paper, we study the properties of a certain class of Borel measures on $\mathbb{R}^n$ that arise in the integral representation of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions. In particular, we find that restrictions to certain hyperplanes are of a surprisingly simple form and show that the supports of such measures can not lie within particular geometric regions, e.g. strips with positive slope. Corresponding results are derived for measures on the unit poly-torus with vanishing mixed Fourier coefficients. These measures are closely related to functions mapping the unit polydisk analytically into the right half-plane.

On pseudo-passive causal operators of slow growth

In this paper, we study a class of convolution operators on the space of distributions that enlarge the well-studied class of passive operators. In this larger class, we are able to associate, to each operator, a holomorphic function in the right half-plane with a specific constraint on its range, determined by the operator. Afterwards, we investigate whether the properties of causality and slow growth hold automatically in our larger class of convolution operators. Finally, an alternative class of convolution operators is also considered.

An integral representation for Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions in several variables

In this article, a characterization of the class of Herglotz-Nevanlinna functions in $n$ variables is given in terms of an integral representation. Furthermore, alternative conditions on the measure appearing in this representation are discussed in detail. Symmetry properties induced by the integral representation are also investigated.
