Magneto-optical hologram lens with microsecond focal switching in magnetic garnet

Active lenses based on metasurfaces have been demonstrated across broad applications, and their response speeds remain limited to the microsecond range. Here we report the experimental demonstration of a magneto-optical (MO) active lens based on a magnetic hologram formed on a magnetic garnet film. A Fresnel zone plate pattern was created using an array of permanent magnets, focusing a 633 nm laser beam of 12.5 mm diameter to a spot size of 0.7 mm at a focal length of 3.1 m with a modulation depth of ~91%. The focusing state was reversibly switched by applying an external magnetic field pulse. Through optimization of the magnetic field application system, a switching speed of 10.8 $\mu$s was achieved, surpassing the operating speeds of conventional active lenses. The intrinsic picosecond-scale response of the MO effect indicates that further improvement in switching speed is achievable, establishing this work as a proof-of-concept for ultra-fast active lenses.

Induced nonlinear phase shift of forward volume spin waves in magnetic films and one-dimensional magnonic crystals

A differential phase shift of a low-power spin wave (SW) induced by a high-power pumping wave co-propagating at different frequencies in perpendicularly magnetized magnetic films has been studied. We find that this effect for forward volume SWs propagating in yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films is stronger than that for surface SWs propagating in tangentially magnetized films. The results show that the induced nonlinear phase shift up to 180{\deg} takes place for pumping wave power of a few milliwatts. The phenomenon paves the way for fast and energy-efficient control of one-dimensional magnon transport.

Spin Current Generation by a Surface Plasmon Polariton

Surface plasmon polariton (SPP) is an electromagnetic wave which is tightly localised beyond the diffraction limit at metallic surfaces. Recently, it is theoretically proposed that the angular momentum conversion between the SPP and electrons. In this work, we have successfully measured SPP induced spin currents, which proves the fact that the angular momenta are interconverted. Such conversion from light to a spin current can be used as a coupler in a next generation spintronic computing with optical data transfer or storage.
