Entanglement Breaking Channels, Stochastic Matrices, and Primitivity

We consider the important class of quantum operations (completely positive trace-preserving maps) called entanglement breaking channels. We show how every such channel induces stochastic matrix representations that have the same non-zero spectrum as the channel. We then use this to investigate when entanglement breaking channels are primitive, and prove this depends on primitivity of the matrix representations. This in turn leads to tight bounds on the primitivity index of entanglement breaking channels in terms of the primitivity index of the associated stochastic matrices. We also present examples and discuss open problems generated by the work.

Bisynchronous Games and Factorizable Maps

We introduce a new class of non-local games, and corresponding densities, which we call bisynchronous. Bisynchronous games are a subclass of synchronous games and exhibit many interesting symmetries when the algebra of the game is considered. We develop a close connection between these non-local games and the theory of quantum groups which recently surfaced in studies of graph isomorphism games. When the number of inputs is equal to the number of outputs, we prove that a bisynchronous density arises from a trace on the quantum permutation group. Each bisynchronous density gives rise to a completely positive map and we prove that these maps are factorizable maps.

First-principles prediction of Structural Stability and Thermoelectric Properties of SrGaSnH

Thermoelectric materials based on earth-abundant and non-toxic elements are very useful in cost-effective and eco-friendly waste heat management systems. The constituents of SrGaSnH are earth-abundant and non-toxic, thus we have chosen SrSnGaH to study its structural stability and thermoelectric properties by using DFT, DFPT, and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. Our elastic and phonons calculations show that the compound has good structural stability. The electronic structure calculation discloses that it is an indirect bandgap (0.63 eV by mBJ+SOC) semiconductor. Light band hole effective mass leads to higher electrical conductivity along x-axis than that of along z-axis. On the other side, the weak phonon scattering leads to high lattice thermal conductivity ~10.5 W m-1K-1 at 300 K. Although the power factor (PF) is very high along the x-axis (above 10 mW m-1K-2 at 300 K), such large kl dramatically reduces ZT. The maximum values of in-plane and cross-plane ZT are ~1 (n-type), 0.8 (p-type) and 0.6 (n-type), (0.2 p-type) at 700 K, respectively. The present study has revealed that this compound has strong potential in eco-friendly TE applications.

Entanglement Breaking Rank and the existence of SIC POVMs

We introduce and study the entanglement breaking rank of an entanglement breaking channel. We show that the entanglement breaking rank of the channel $\mathfrak Z: M_d \to M_d$ defined by \begin{align*} \mathfrak Z(X) = \frac{1}{d+1}(X+\text{Tr}(X)\mathbb I_d) \end{align*} is $d^2$ if and only if there exists a symmetric informationally-complete POVM in dimension $d$.

Approximate Quasiorthogonality of Operator Algebras and Relative Quantum Privacy

We show that the approximate quasiorthogonality of two operator algebras is equivalent to the algebras being approximately private relative to their conditional expectation quantum channels. Our analysis is based on a characterization of the measure of orthogonality in terms of Choi matrices and Kraus operators for completely positive maps. We present examples drawn from different areas of quantum information.

A new bound on quantum Wielandt inequality

A new bound on quantum version of Wielandt inequality for positive (not necessarily completely positive) maps has been established. Also bounds for entanglement breaking and PPT channels are put forward which are better bound than the previous bounds known. We prove that a primitive positive map $\mathcal{E}$ acting on $\mathcal{M}_d$ that satisfies the Schwarz inequality becomes strictly positive after at most $2(d-1)^2$ iterations. This is to say, that after $2(d-1)^2$ iterations, such a map sends every positive semidefinite matrix to a positive definite one. This finding does not depend on the number of Kraus operators as the map may not admit any Kraus decomposition. The motivation of this work is to provide an answer to a question raised in the article \cite{Wielandt} by Sanz-García-Wolf and Cirac.

Schur multipliers and mixed unitary maps

We consider the tensor product of the completely depolarising channel on $d\times d$ matrices with the map of Schur multiplication by a $k \times k$ correlation matrix and characterise, via matrix theory methods, when such a map is a mixed (random) unitary channel. When $d=1$, this recovers a result of O'Meara and Pereira, and for larger $d$ is equivalent to a result of Haagerup and Musat that was originally obtained via the theory of factorisation through von Neumann algebras. We obtain a bound on the distance between a given correlation matrix for which this tensor product is nearly mixed unitary and a correlation matrix for which such a map is exactly mixed unitary. This bound allows us to give an elementary proof of another result of Haagerup and Musat about the closure of such correlation matrices without appealing to the theory of von Neumann algebras.

Eventually Entanglement Breaking Maps

We analyze certain class of linear maps on matrix algebras that become entanglement breaking after composing a finite or infinite number of times with themselves. This means that the Choi matrix of the iterated linear map becomes separable in the tensor product space. If a linear map is entanglement breaking after finite iterations, we say the map has a finite index of separability. In particular we show that every unital PPT-channel becomes entanglement breaking after a finite number of iterations. It turns out that the class of unital channels that have finite index of separability is a dense subset of the unital channels. We construct concrete examples of maps which are not PPT but have finite index of separability. We prove that there is a large class of unital channels that are asymptotically entanglement breaking. This analysis is motivated by the PPT-squared conjecture made by M. Christandl that says every PPT channel, when composed with itself, becomes entanglement breaking.

Spectral Properties of Tensor Products of Channels

We investigate spectral properties of the tensor products of two quantum channels defined on matrix algebras. This leads to the important question of when an arbitrary subalgebra can split into the tensor product of two subalgebras. We show that for two unital quantum channels $\mathcal{E}_1$ and $\mathcal{E}_2$ the multiplicative domain of $\mathcal{E}_1\otimes\mathcal{E}_2$ splits into the tensor product of the individual multiplicative domains. Consequently, we fully describe the fixed points and peripheral eigen operators of the tensor product of channels. Through a structure theorem of maximal unital proper $^*$-subalgebras (MUPSA) of a matrix algebra we provide a non-trivial upper bound of the 'multiplicative index' of a unital channel which was recently introduced. This bound gives a criteria on when a channel cannot be factored into a product of two different channels. We construct examples of channels which can not be realized as a tensor product of two channels in any way. With these techniques and results, we found some applications in quantum error correction.

Bures Contractive Channels on Operator Algebras

In a unital C*-algebra with a faithful trace functional $τ$, the set $D_τ(A)$ of positive $ρ\in A$ of trace τ(ρ)=1 is an algebraic analogue of the space of density matrices (the set of all positive matrices of a fixed dimension of unit trace). Motivated by the literature concerning the metric properties of the space of density matrices, the present paper studies the density space $D_τ(A)$ in terms of the Bures metric. Linear maps on A that map $D_τ(A)$ back into itself are positive and trace preserving, hence, they may be viewed as an algebraic analogue of a quantum channel, which are studied intensely in the literature on quantum computing and quantum information theory. The main results in this paper are: (i) to establish that the Bures metric is indeed a metric, (ii) to prove that channels induce nonexpansive maps of the density space $D_τ(A)$, (iii) to introduce and study channels on A that are locally contractive maps (which we call Bures contractions) on the metric space $D_τ(A)$, and (iv) to analyse Bures contractions from the point of view of the Frobenius theory of cone preserving linear maps. Although the focus is on unital C*-algebras, an important class of examples is furnished by finite von Neumann algebras. Indeed, several of the C*-algebra results are established by first proving them for finite von Neumann algebras and then proving them for C*-algebras by embedding a C*-algebra A into its enveloping von Neumann algebra $A^{**}$.

Multiplicative Properties of Quantum Channels

In this paper, we study the multiplicative behaviour of quantum channels, mathematically described by trace preserving, completely positive maps on matrix algebras. It turns out that the multiplicative domain of a unital quantum channel has a close connection to its spectral properties. A structure theorem, which reveals the automorphic property of an arbitrary unital quantum channel on a subalgebra, is presented. Various classes of quantum channels (irreducible, primitive etc.) are then analysed in terms of this stabilising subalgebra. The notion of the multiplicative index of a unital quantum channel is introduced, which measures the number of times a unital channel needs to be composed with itself for the multiplicative algebra to stabilise. We show that the maps that have trivial multiplicative domains are dense in completely bounded norm topology in the set of all unital completely positive maps. Some applications in quantum information theory are discussed.

Fidelity of density operator in an operator-algebraic framework

Josza's definition of fidelity for a pair of (mixed) quantum states is studied in the context of two types of operator algebras. The first setting is mainly algebraic in that it involves unital C$^*$-algebras $A$ that possess a faithful trace functional $τ$. In this context, the role of quantum states (that is, density operators) in the classical quantum-mechanical framework is assumed by positive elements $ρ\in A$ for which $τ(ρ)=1$. The second of our two settings is more operator theoretic: by fixing a faithful normal semifinite trace $τ$ on a semifinite von Neumann algebra $M$, we define and consider the fidelity of pairs of positive operators in $M$ of unit trace. The main results of this paper address monotonicity and preservation of fidelity under the action of certain trace-preserving positive linear maps of $A$ or of the predual $M_*$. Our results also yield a new proof of a theorem of Molnár on the structure of quantum channels on the trace-class operators that preserve fidelity.
