Twist spun knots of twist spun knots of classical knots

A $k$-twist spun knot is an $n+1$-dimensional knot in the $n+3$-dimensional sphere which is obtained from an $n$-dimensional knot in the $n+2$-dimensional sphere by applying an operation called a $k$-twist-spinning. This construction was introduced by Zeeman in 1965. In this paper, we show that the $m_2$-twist-spinning of the $m_1$-twist-spinning of a classical knot is a trivial $3$-knot in $S^5$ if $\gcd(m_1,m_2)=1$. We also give a sufficient condition for the $m_2$-twist-spinning of the $m_1$-twist-spinning of a classical knot to be non-trivial.

Construction of weaving and polycatenane motifs from periodic tilings of the plane

Doubly periodic (DP) weaves and polycatenanes are complex entangled structures embedded in the Euclidean thickened plane, invariant under translations in two independent directions. Their topological properties are fully encoded within a quotient space under a periodic lattice, which we refer to as a motif. On the diagrammatic level, a motif is a specific type of link diagram on the torus, consisting of essential closed curves for DP weaves or null-homotopic curves for DP polycatenanes. In this paper, we introduce a combinatorial methodology to construct these motifs from planar DP tilings using the concept of polygonal link transformations. We also present an approach to predict the type of motif that can be constructed from a given DP tiling and a chosen polygonal link method. This approach has potential applications in various disciplines, such as materials science and chemistry.

Distinguishing 2-knots admitting circle actions by fundamental groups

A 2-sphere embedded in the 4-sphere invariant under a circle action is called a branched twist spin. A branched twist spin is constructed from a 1-knot in the 3-sphere and a pair of coprime integers uniquely. In this paper, we study, for each pair of coprime integers, if two different 1-knots yield the same branched twist spin, and prove that such a pair of 1-knots does not exist in most cases. Fundamental groups of 3-orbifolds of cyclic type are obtained as quotient groups of the fundamental groups of the complements of branched twist spins. We use these groups for distinguishing branched twist spins.

Representations of branched twist spins with a non-trivial center of order 2

It is known that a presentation of the knot group of a branched twist spin is obtained from a Wirtinger presentation of the original 1-knot group by adding a generator corresponding to a regular orbit of the circle action and a certain relator. In particular, the additional generator is an element of the center of the knot group. In this paper, we focus on ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}_3)$-representations and dihedral group representations. For the former case, we give a sufficient condition for the existence of an ${\rm SL}_2(\mathbb{Z}_3)$-representation for a branched twist spin. For the latter case, we determine the number of even-ordered dihedral group representations of branched twist spins.

Construction and Classification of Combinatorial Weaving Diagrams

This paper introduces a new systematic algorithm for constructing periodic Euclidean weaving diagrams with combinatorial arguments. It is shown that such a weaving diagram can be considered as a specific type of four-regular periodic planar tiling with over or under information at each vertex. Therefore, a weaving diagram can be constructed using two sets of cycles, one to build a tiling, and a second to define the crossing information. However, this construction method does not guarantee the uniqueness of the diagram, so we define the notion of equivalence classes of weaving diagrams using the concept of crossing-matrices. Finally, we present a classification of our periodic structures according to the minimum number of crossings on a unit cell.

Classification of doubly periodic untwisted (p,q)-weaves by their crossing number

A weave is the lift to the Euclidean thickened plane of a set of infinitely many planar crossed geodesics, that can be characterized by a number of sets of threads describing the organization of the non-intersecting curves, together with a set of crossing sequences representing the entanglements. In this paper, the classification of a specific class of doubly periodic weaves, called untwisted (p,q)-weaves, is done by their crossing number, which is the minimum number of crossings that can possibly be found in a unit cell of its infinite weaving diagrams. Such a diagram can be considered as a particular type of quadrivalent periodic planar graph with an over or under information at each vertex, whose unit cell corresponds to a link diagram in a thickened torus. Moreover, considering that a weave is not uniquely defined by its sets of threads and its crossing sequences, we also specify the notion of equivalence classes by introducing a new parameter, called crossing matrix.

Gluck twists along 2-knots with periodic monodromy

The union of singular orbits of an effective locally smooth circle action on the 4-sphere consists of two 2-knots, $K$ and $K^{\prime}$, intersecting at two points transversely. Each of $K$ and $K^{\prime}$ is called a branched twist spin. A twist spun knot is an example of a branched twist spin. The Gluck twists along branched twist spins are studied by Fintushel, Gordon and Pao. In this paper, we determine the 2-knot obtained from $K$ by the Gluck twist along $K^{\prime}$. As an application, we give infinitely many pairs of inequivalent branched twist spins whose complements are homeomorphic.

Irreducible $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$-metabelian representations of branched twist spins

An $(m,n)$-branched twist spin is a fibered $2$-knot in $S^4$ which is determined by a $1$-knot $K$ and coprime integers $m$ and $n$. For a $1$-knot, Lin proved that the number of irreducible $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$-metabelian representations of the knot group of a $1$-knot up to conjugation is determined by the knot determinant of the $1$-knot. In this paper, we prove that the number of irreducible $SL(2,\mathbb{C})$-metabelian representations of the knot group of an $(m,n)$-branched twist spin up to conjugation is determined by the determinant of a $1$-knot in the orbit space by comparing a presentation of the knot group of the branched twist spin with the Lin's presentation of the knot group of the $1$-knot.

Branched twist spins and knot determinants

A branched twist spin is a generalization of twist spun knots, which appeared in the study of locally smooth circle actions on the $4$-sphere due to Montgomery, Yang, Fintushel and Pao. In this paper, we give a sufficient condition to distinguish non-equivalent, non-trivial branched twist spins by using knot determinants. To prove the assertion, we give a presentation of the fundamental group of the complement of a branched twist spin, which generalizes a presentation of Plotnick, calculate the first elementary ideals and obtain the condition of the knot determinants by substituting $-1$ for the indeterminate.
