Low moments of Hecke eigenvalue sums

We show that partial sums of the Sato--Tate random multiplicative functions introduced by Cogdell and Michel exhibit better-than-square-root cancellation. The proof proceeds via a connection to multiplicative chaos, following Harper's seminal work. By a non-trivial adaptation of Harper's derandomization argument for character sums, we also obtain upper bounds for low moments of Hecke eigenvalue sums and of Hecke eigenforms near the cusp $0$; to our knowledge, this is the first appearance of multiplicative chaos in the context of automorphic forms on $\mathrm{GL}(2)$. A novel ingredient is the introduction of Hecke $s$-norms.

Asymptotics of Hankel determinants with a multi-cut regular potential and Fisher-Hartwig singularities

We obtain large $N$ asymptotics for $N \times N$ Hankel determinants corresponding to non-negative symbols with Fisher-Hartwig (FH) singularities in the multi-cut regime. Our result includes the explicit computation of the multiplicative constant. More precisely, we consider symbols of the form $ωe^{f-NV}$, where $V$ is a real-analytic potential whose equilibrium measure $μ_V$ is supported on several intervals, $f$ is analytic in a neighborhood of $\textrm{supp}(μ_V)$, and $ω$ is a function with any number of jump- and root-type singularities in the interior of $\textrm{supp}(μ_V)$. While the special cases $ω\equiv1$ and $ωe^f\equiv1$ have been considered previously in the literature, we also prove new results for these special cases. No prior asymptotics were available in the literature for symbols with FH singularities in the multi-cut setting. As an application of our results, we discuss a connection between the spectral fluctuations of random Hermitian matrices in the multi-cut regime and the Gaussian free field on the Riemann surface associated to $μ_V$. As a second application, we obtain new rigidity estimates for random Hermitian matrices in the multi-cut regime.

Fluctuations for diameter and perimeter of convex hulls of multiple random walks

We study the diameter and perimeter of the convex hull generated by finitely many independent planar random walks whose increments have finite second moments. The large-time fluctuations are governed by the geometry of the polygon formed by the drift vectors. We develop an $L^2$-approximation framework, based on Wald-type maximal central limit theorems, which reduces the asymptotic analysis of the hull to a finite collection of endpoint, maximal-projection, and Brownian support-function terms. For the diameter, we obtain general max-type limit theorems, Gaussian in the case of a unique extremal diametrical pair and typically non-Gaussian when several extremal pairs compete. For the perimeter, we prove a general distributional limit: non-zero extremal drifts contribute maxima of Gaussian projections, while zero-drift extremal walks contribute Brownian support-function terms. The results recover the previously known Gaussian regimes (the case of one or two walks) and identify the non-Gaussian limits in the degenerate and boundary cases left open (even for two walks). We also give $L^2$ approximations of the convex hull by simpler random sets, under Hausdorff and $\ell_1$ metrics on compact convex sets. Our proofs work under the optimal finite second moment assumption.

Scaling limits of critical FK-decorated random planar maps with $q=4$

We establish the first scaling limit for FK($q$)-weighted planar maps in the critical case $q=4$, resolving a problem that has remained open since Sheffield's seminal work arXiv:1108.2241. In that work, Sheffield proved a scaling limit for $q<4$ via the celebrated hamburger-cheeseburger bijection, which initiated the peanosphere (mating-of-trees) approach to Liouville quantum gravity. We prove that, at criticality, the associated burger count $\mathcal{S}$ and discrepancy $\mathcal{D}$ satisfy \[ \left(\frac{\mathcal{S}_{\lfloor nt \rfloor}}{\sqrt{n}}, \frac{\log(n)}{{2π}\sqrt{n}} \mathcal{D}_{\lfloor nt \rfloor}\right)_{t\in\mathbb{R}} \stackrel{\text{d}}{\longrightarrow} (B^1_t, B^2_{t})_{t\in\mathbb{R}}, \] where $B^1$ and $B^2$ are independent two-sided Brownian motions. To the best of our knowledge, no conjecture for the correct discrepancy scaling factor had previously been formulated. Matching the limiting process with the critical mating of trees arXiv:2109.00275, we establish the first rigorous planar map convergence towards CLE$_4$ and critical ($γ=2$) Liouville quantum gravity, in the peanosphere sense. Our proof is based on a novel approach that reveals the exactly solvable nature of the model through a correspondence with the (bicoloured) fully packed loop-$O(2)$ model on triangulations, and yields critical geometric exponents matching the predictions of conformal field theory.

Multiplicative chaos measure for multiplicative functions: the $L^1$-regime

Let $α$ be a Steinhaus random multiplicative function. For a wide class of multiplicative functions $f$ we construct a multiplicative chaos measure arising from the Dirichlet series of $αf$, in the whole $L^1$-regime. Our method does not rely on the thick point approach or Gaussian approximation, and uses a modified second moment method with the help of an approximate Girsanov theorem. We also employ the idea of weak convergence in $L^r$ to show that the limiting measure is independent of the choice of the approximation schemes, and this may be seen as a non-Gaussian analogue of Shamov's characterisation of multiplicative chaos. Our class of $f$-s consists of those for which the mean value of $|f(p)|^2$ lies in $(0,1)$. In particular, it includes the indicator of sums of two squares. As an application of our construction, we establish a generalised central limit theorem for the (normalised) sums of $αf$, with random variance determined by the total mass of our measure.

On the limiting distribution of sums of random multiplicative functions

We establish the limiting distribution of $\frac{{(\log \log x)}^{1/4}}{\sqrt{x}} \sum_{n\le x}α(n)$ where $α$ is a Steinhaus random multiplicative function, answering a question of Harper. The distributional convergence is proved by applying the martingale central limit theorem to a suitably truncated sum. This truncation is inspired by work of Najnudel, Paquette, Simm and Vu on subcritical holomorphic multiplicative chaos setting, but analysed with a different conditioning argument generalised from Harper's work on fractional moments to circumvent integrability issues at criticality. A significant part of the proof is devoted to the convergence in probability of the associated partial Euler product to a critical multiplicative chaos measure, independent of the mild shift away from the critical line. Our approach to the universality of critical non-Gaussian multiplicative chaos bypasses the barrier analysis with the help of a modified second moment method, and employs a novel argument based on coupling and homogenisation by change of measure, which could be of independent interest.

Small deviations of Gaussian multiplicative chaos and the free energy of the two-dimensional massless Sinh--Gordon model

We prove a global decomposition result for $\log$-correlated Gaussian fields on the $d$-dimensional torus and use this to derive new small deviations bounds for a class of Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures obtained from Gaussian fields with zero spatial mean on the $d$-dimensional torus. The upper bound is obtained by a modification of the method that was used in \cite{LRV}, and the lower bound is obtained by applying the Donsker--Varadhan variational formula. We also give the probabilistic path integral formulation of the massless Sinh--Gordon model on a torus of side length $R$, and study its partition function as $R$ tends to infinity. We apply the small deviation bounds for Gaussian multiplicative chaos to obtain lower and upper bounds for the logarithm of the partition function, leading to the existence of a non-zero and finite subsequential infinite volume limit for the free energy.

A short proof of Helson's conjecture

Let $α\colon \mathbb{N} \to S^1$ be the Steinhaus multiplicative function: a completely multiplicative function such that $(α(p))_{p\text{ prime}}$ are i.i.d.~random variables uniformly distributed on the complex unit circle $S^1$. Helson conjectured that $\mathbb{E}|\sum_{n\le x}α(n)|=o(\sqrt{x})$ as $x \to \infty$, and this was solved in a strong form by Harper. We give a short proof of the conjecture using a result of Saksman and Webb on a random model for the zeta function.

Martingale central limit theorem for random multiplicative functions

Let $α$ be a Steinhaus or a Rademacher random multiplicative function. For a wide class of multiplicative functions $f$ we show that the sum $\sum_{n \le x}α(n) f(n)$, normalised to have mean square $1$, has a non-Gaussian limiting distribution. More precisely, we establish a generalised central limit theorem with random variance determined by the total mass of a random measure associated with $αf$. Our result applies to $d_z$, the $z$-th divisor function, as long as $z$ is strictly between $0$ and $\tfrac{1}{\sqrt{2}}$. Other examples of admissible $f$-s include any multiplicative indicator function with the property that $f(p)=1$ holds for a set of primes of density strictly between $0$ and $\tfrac{1}{2}$.

Weyl's law in Liouville quantum gravity

Can you hear the shape of Liouville quantum gravity? We obtain a Weyl law for the eigenvalues of Liouville Brownian motion: the $n$-th eigenvalue grows linearly with $n$, with the proportionality constant given by the Liouville area of the domain and a certain deterministic constant $c_γ$ depending on $γ\in (0, 2)$. The constant $c_γ$, initially a complicated function of Sheffield's quantum cone, can be evaluated explicitly and is strictly greater than the equivalent Riemannian constant. At the heart of the proof we obtain sharp asymptotics of independent interest for the small-time behaviour of the on-diagonal heat kernel. Interestingly, we show that the scaled heat kernel displays nontrivial pointwise fluctuations. Fortunately, at the level of the heat trace these pointwise fluctuations cancel each other, which leads to the result. We complement these results with a number of conjectures on the spectral geometry of Liouville quantum gravity, notably suggesting a connection with quantum chaos.

On Erdős sums of almost primes

In 1935, Erdős proved that the sums $f_k=\sum_n 1/(n\log n)$, over integers $n$ with exactly $k$ prime factors, are bounded by an absolute constant, and in 1993 Zhang proved that $f_k$ is maximized by the prime sum $f_1=\sum_p 1/(p\log p)$. According to a 2013 conjecture of Banks and Martin, the sums $f_k$ are predicted to decrease monotonically in $k$. In this article, we show that the sums restricted to odd integers are indeed monotonically decreasing in $k$, sufficiently large. By contrast, contrary to the conjecture we prove that the sums $f_k$ increase monotonically in $k$, sufficiently large. Our main result gives an asymptotic for $f_k$ which identifies the (negative) secondary term, namely $f_k = 1 - (a+o(1))k^2/2^k$ for an explicit constant $a= 0.0656\cdots$. This is proven by a refined method combining real and complex analysis, whereas the classical results of Sathe and Selberg on products of $k$ primes imply the weaker estimate $f_k=1+O_{\varepsilon}(k^{\varepsilon-1/2})$. We also give an alternate, probability-theoretic argument related to the Dickman distribution. Here the proof reduces to showing a sequence of integrals converges exponentially quickly to $e^{-γ}$, which may be of independent interest.

On the critical-subcritical moments of moments of random characteristic polynomials: a GMC perspective

We study the 'critical moments' of subcritical Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMCs) in dimensions $d \leq 2$. In particular, we establish a fully explicit formula for the leading order asymptotics, which is closely related to large deviation results for GMCs and demonstrates a similar universality feature. We conjecture that our result correctly describes the behaviour of analogous moments of moments of random matrices, or more generally structures which are asymptotically Gaussian and log-correlated in the entire mesoscopic scale. This is verified for an integer case in the setting of circular unitary ensemble, extending and strengthening the results of Claeys et al. and Fahs to higher-order moments.

Tail universality of critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos

In this article we study the tail probability of the mass of critical Gaussian multiplicative chaos (GMC) associated to a general class of log-correlated Gaussian fields in any dimension, including the Gaussian free field (GFF) in dimension two. More precisely, we derive a fully explicit formula for the leading order asymptotics for the tail probability and demonstrate a new universality phenomenon. Our analysis here shares similar philosophy with the subcritical case but requires a different approach due to complications in the analogous localisation step, and we also employ techniques from recent studies of fusion estimates in GMC theory.

Universal tail profile of Gaussian multiplicative chaos

In this article we study the tail probability of the mass of Gaussian multiplicative chaos. With the novel use of a Tauberian argument and Goldie's implicit renewal theorem, we provide a unified approach to general log-correlated Gaussian fields in arbitrary dimension and derive precise first order asymptotics of the tail probability, resolving a conjecture of Rhodes and Vargas. The leading order is described by a universal constant that captures the generic property of Gaussian multiplicative chaos, and may be seen as the analogue of the Liouville unit volume reflection coefficients in higher dimensions.

Fusion asymptotics for Liouville correlation functions

David-Kupiainen-Rhodes-Vargas introduced a probabilistic framework based on the Gaussian Free Field and Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos in order to make sense rigorously of the path integral approach to Liouville Conformal Field Theory (LCFT). We use this setting to compute fusion estimates for the four-point correlation function on the Riemann sphere, and find that it is consistent with predictions from the framework of theoretical physics known as the conformal bootstrap. This result fits naturally into the famous KPZ conjecture which relates the four-point function to the expected density of points around the root of a large random planar map weighted by some statistical mechanics model. From a purely probabilistic point of view, we give non-trivial results on negative moments of GMC. We give exact formulae based on the DOZZ formula in the Liouville case and asymptotic behaviours in the other cases, with a probabilistic representation of the limit. Finally, we show how to extend our results to boundary LCFT, treating the cases of the fusion of two boundary or bulk insertions as well as the absorption of a bulk insertion on the boundary.

Pre-freezing transition in Boltzmann-Gibbs measures associated with log-correlated fields

We consider Boltzmann-Gibbs measures associated with log-correlated Gaussian fields as potentials and study their multifractal properties which exhibit phase transitions. In particular, the pre-freezing and freezing phenomena of the annealed exponent, predicted by Fyodorov using a modified replica-symmetry-breaking ansatz, are generalised to arbitrary dimension and verified using results from Gaussian multiplicative chaos theory.

On the moments of the characteristic polynomial of a Ginibre random matrix

In this article we study the large $N$ asymptotics of complex moments of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of a $N\times N$ complex Ginibre random matrix with the characteristic polynomial evaluated at a point in the unit disk. More precisely, we calculate the large $N$ asymptotics of $\mathbb{E}|\det(G_N-z)|^γ$, where $G_N$ is a $N\times N$ matrix whose entries are i.i.d and distributed as $N^{-1/2}Z$, $Z$ being a standard complex Gaussian, $\mathrm{Re}(γ)>-2$, and $|z|<1$. This expectation is proportional to the determinant of a complex moment matrix with a symbol which is supported in the whole complex plane and has a Fisher-Hartwig type of singularity: $\det(\int_\mathbb{C} w^{i}\overline{w}^j |w-z|^γe^{-N|w|^{2}}d^2 w)_{i,j=0}^{N-1}$. We study the asymptotics of this determinant using recent results due to Lee and Yang concerning the asymptotics of orthogonal polynomials with respect to the weight $|w-z|^γe^{-N|w|^2}d^2 w$ along with differential identities familiar from the study of asymptotics of Toeplitz and Hankel determinants with Fisher-Hartwig singularities. To our knowledge, even in the case of one singularity, the asymptotics of the determinant of such a moment matrix whose symbol has support in a two-dimensional set and a Fisher-Hartwig singularity, have been previously unknown.

Random Hermitian Matrices and Gaussian Multiplicative Chaos

We prove that when suitably normalized, small enough powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomial of random Hermitian matrices, drawn from one-cut regular unitary invariant ensembles, converge in law to Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures. We prove this in the so-called $L^2$-phase of multiplicative chaos. Our main tools are asymptotics of Hankel determinants with Fisher-Hartwig singularities. Using Riemann-Hilbert methods, we prove a rather general Fisher-Hartwig formula for one-cut regular unitary invariant ensembles.
