Edge Intelligence for Empowering IoT-based Healthcare Systems

The demand for real-time, affordable, and efficient smart healthcare services is increasing exponentially due to the technological revolution and burst of population. To meet the increasing demands on this critical infrastructure, there is a need for intelligent methods to cope with the existing obstacles in this area. In this regard, edge computing technology can reduce latency and energy consumption by moving processes closer to the data sources in comparison to the traditional centralized cloud and IoT-based healthcare systems. In addition, by bringing automated insights into the smart healthcare systems, artificial intelligence (AI) provides the possibility of detecting and predicting high-risk diseases in advance, decreasing medical costs for patients, and offering efficient treatments. The objective of this article is to highlight the benefits of the adoption of edge intelligent technology, along with AI in smart healthcare systems. Moreover, a novel smart healthcare model is proposed to boost the utilization of AI and edge technology in smart healthcare systems. Additionally, the paper discusses issues and research directions arising when integrating these different technologies together.

An Incentive-Based Mechanism for Volunteer Computing using Blockchain

The rise of fast communication media both at the core and at the edge has resulted in unprecedented numbers of sophisticated and intelligent wireless IoT devices. Tactile Internet has enabled the interaction between humans and machines within their environment to achieve revolutionized solutions both on the move and in real-time. Many applications such as intelligent autonomous self-driving, smart agriculture and industrial solutions, and self-learning multimedia content filtering and sharing have become attainable through cooperative, distributed and decentralized systems, namely, volunteer computing. This article introduces a blockchain-enabled resource sharing and service composition solution through volunteer computing. Device resource, computing, and intelligence capabilities are advertised in the environment to be made discoverable and available for sharing with the aid of blockchain technology. Incentives in the form of on-demand service availability are given to resource and service providers to ensure fair and balanced cooperative resource usage. Blockchains are formed whenever a service request is initiated with the aid of fog and mobile edge computing (MEC) devices to ensure secure communication and service delivery for the participants. Using both volunteer computing techniques and tactile internet architectures, we devise a fast and reliable service provisioning framework that relies on a reinforcement learning technique. Simulation results show that the proposed solution can achieve high reward distribution, increased number of blockchain formations, reduced delays, and balanced resource usage among participants, under the premise of high IoT device availability.

Blockchain and Fog Computing for Cyberphysical Systems: The Case of Smart Industry

Blockchain has revolutionized how transactions are conducted by ensuring secure and auditable peer-to-peer coordination. This is due to both the development of decentralization, and the promotion of trust among peers. Blockchain and fog computing are currently being evaluated as potential support for software and a wide spectrum of applications, ranging from banking practices and digital transactions to cyber-physical systems. These systems are designed to work in highly complex, sometimes even adversarial, environments, and to synchronize heterogeneous machines and manufacturing facilities in cyber computational space, and address critical challenges such as computational complexity, security, trust, and data management. Coupling blockchain with fog computing technologies has the potential to identify and overcome these issues. Thus, this paper presents the knowledge of blockchain and fog computing required to improve cyber-physical systems in terms of quality-of-service, data storage, computing and security.

Design Guidelines for Blockchain-Assisted 5G-UAV Networks

Fifth Generation (5G) wireless networks are designed to meet various end-user Quality of Service (QoS) requirements through high data rates (typically of Gbps order) and low latencies. Coupled with Fog and Mobile Edge Computing (MEC), 5G can achieve high data rates, enabling complex autonomous smart city services such as the large deployment of self-driving vehicles and large-scale Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled industrial manufacturing. However, to meet the exponentially growing number of connected IoT devices and irregular data and service requests in both low and highly dense locations, the process of enacting traditional cells supported through fixed and costly base stations requires rethought to enable on-demand mobile access points in the form of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) for diversified smart city scenarios. This article envisions a 5G network environment that is supported by blockchain-enabled UAVs to meet dynamic user demands with network access supply. The solution enables decentralized service delivery (Drones as a Service) and routing to and from end-users in a reliable and secure manner. Both public and private blockchains are deployed within the UAVs, supported by fog and cloud computing devices and data centers to provide wide range of complex authenticated service and data availability. Particular attention is paid tocomparing data delivery success rates and message exchange in the proposed solution against traditional UAV-supported cellular networks. Challenges and future research are also discussed with highlights on emerging technologies such as Federated Learning.

EdgeKV: Decentralized, scalable, and consistent storage for the edge

Edge computing moves the computation closer to the data and the data closer to the user to overcome the high latency communication of cloud computing. Storage at the edge allows data access with high speeds that enable latency-sensitive applications in areas such as autonomous driving and smart grid. However, several distributed services are typically designed for the cloud and building an efficient edge-enabled storage system is challenging because of the distributed and heterogeneous nature of the edge and its limited resources. In this paper, we propose EdgeKV, a decentralized storage system designed for the network edge. EdgeKV offers fast and reliable storage, utilizing data replication with strong consistency guarantees. With a location-transparent and interface-based design, EdgeKV can scale with a heterogeneous system of edge nodes. We implement a prototype of the EdgeKV modules in Golang and evaluate it in both the edge and cloud settings on the Grid'5000 testbed. We utilize the Yahoo! Cloud Serving Benchmark (YCSB) to analyze the system's performance under realistic workloads. Our evaluation results show that EdgeKV outperforms the cloud storage setting with both local and global data access with an average write response time and throughput improvements of 26% and 19% respectively under the same settings. Our evaluations also show that EdgeKV can scale with the number of clients, without sacrificing performance. Finally, we discuss the energy efficiency improvement when utilizing edge resources with EdgeKV instead of a centralized cloud.

Cyberphysical Blockchain-Enabled Peer-to-Peer Energy Trading

Scalability and security problems of the centralized architecture models in cyberphysical systems have great potential to be solved by novel blockchain based distributed models.A decentralized energy trading system takes advantage of various sources and effectively coordinates the energy to ensure optimal utilization of the available resources. It achieves that goal by managing physical, social and business infrastructures using technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), cloud computing and network systems. Addressing the importance of blockchain-enabled energy trading in the context of cyberphysical systems, this article provides a thorough overview of the P2P energy trading and the utilization of blockchain to enhance the efficiency and the overall performance including the degree of decentralization, scalability and the security of the systems. Three blockchain based energy trading models have been proposed to overcome the technical challenges and market barriers for better adoption of this disruptive technology.

Cluster Aware Mobility Encounter Dataset Enlargement

The recent emerging fields in data processing and manipulation has facilitated the need for synthetic data generation. This is also valid for mobility encounter dataset generation. Synthetic data generation might be useful to run research-based simulations and also create mobility encounter models. Our approach in this paper is to generate a larger dataset by using a given dataset which includes the clusters of people. Based on the cluster information, we created a framework. Using this framework, we can generate a similar dataset that is statistically similar to the input dataset. We have compared the statistical results of our approach with the real dataset and an encounter mobility model generation technique in the literature. The results showed that the created datasets have similar statistical structure with the given dataset.
