Casimir interactions between two parallel graphene sheets carrying steady-state drift currents

We investigate the fluctuation-induced Casimir interactions between two parallel graphene sheets carrying steady-state drift currents. The graphene properties are modeled based on the shifted Fermi disk model to capture the non-equilibrium optical response of the system. We find that the drift current introduces a repulsive correction to the perpendicular to the layers Casimir interaction, thereby reducing the overall attractive force. Although the correction is repulsive, it does not overcome the underlying attraction between the layers. It also generates a lateral force that opposes the carrier flow direction. Both contributions are studied in terms of distance and drift velocity functionalities showing pathways for Casimir force control.

Theory of Tunneling between Two-Dimensional Electron Layers Driven by Spin Pumping: Adiabatic Regime and Beyond

Tunneling spectroscopy between parallel two-dimensional (2D) electronic systems provides a powerful method to probe the underlying electronic properties by measuring tunneling conductance. In this work, we present a theoretical framework for spin transport in 2D-to-2D tunneling systems, driven by spin pumping. This theory applies to a vertical heterostructure where two layers of metallic 2D electron systems are separated by an insulating barrier, with one layer exchange-coupled to a magnetic layer driven at resonance. Utilizing a non-perturbative Floquet-Keldysh formalism, we derive general expressions for the tunneling spin and charge currents across a broad range of driving frequencies, extending beyond the traditional adiabatic pumping regime. At low frequencies, we obtain analytical results that recover the known behaviors in the adiabatic regime. However, at higher frequencies, our numerical findings reveal significant deviations in the dependence of spin and charge currents on both frequency and precession angle. This work offers fresh insights into the role of magnetization dynamics in tunneling transport, opening up new avenues for exploring non-adiabatic spin pumping phenomena.

Floquet-driven indirect exchange interaction mediated by topological insulator surface states

Light drives offer a potential tool for the dynamical control of magnetic interactions in matter. We theoretically investigate the indirect exchange coupling between two parallel chains of magnetic impurities on the surface of a topological insulator, driven by a time-periodic circularly polarized light field in the high-frequency, off-resonant regime. We derive a closed-form analytic expression for the spin susceptibility of the photon-dressed topological insulator surface states and obtain the irradiation dependence of the Ising, Heisenberg, and Dzyaloshinskii- Moriya exchange couplings between the impurity chains. Our results show a two-pronged modification of these exchange couplings by periodic drives. First, the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) oscillation period of the exchange couplings can be extended by enhancing the driving strength. Second, increasing driving strength enhances the envelope of RKKY oscillations of the Ising type while suppressing those of the Heisenberg type and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya type. Our work provides useful insights for realizing Floquet engineering of collinear and noncollinear indirect exchange interactions in topological insulating systems.

Impurity States and Indirect Exchange Interaction in Irradiated Graphene

We theoretically investigate the impurity levels and exchange interaction between magnetic impurities in graphene driven by an off-resonant circularly polarized light field. Our analysis captures the non-perturbative effects resulting from scattering with magnetic impurities with a strong onsite potential. Under irradiation, a dynamical band gap opens up at the Dirac point, allowing impurity levels to exist inside the gap. These impurity levels are shown to give rise to a resonance feature in the exchange energy for impurities located either at the same or different sublattices. The exchange interaction also shows a wider spatial range of antiferromagnetic behavior due to irradiation. Our work demonstrates that the exchange energy of magnetic impurities in graphene is extensively tunable by light irradiation in the presence of strong potential scattering.

Non-Equilibrium RKKY Interaction in Irradiated Graphene

We demonstrate that the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in graphene can be strongly modified by a time-periodic driving field even in the weak drive regime. This effect is due to the opening of a dynamical band gap at the Dirac points when graphene is exposed to circularly polarized light. Using Keldysh-Floquet Green's functions, we develop a theoretical framework to calculate the time-averaged RKKY coupling under weak periodic drives and show that its magnitude in undoped graphene can be decreased controllably by increasing the driving strength, while mostly maintaining its ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic character. In doped graphene, we find RKKY oscillations with a period that is tunable by the driving field. When a sufficiently strong drive is turned on that brings the Fermi level completely within the dynamically opened gap, the behavior of the RKKY coupling changes qualitatively from that of doped to undoped irradiated graphene.
