Efficient Multi-Precision Computation of Bessel Functions for Real Orders and Complex Arguments with Fortran Implementation -- Part I: The Modified Bessel Function of the First Kind, $I_ν(z)$

This paper is the first in a series devoted to the development of efficient and highly accurate algorithms, with multiprecision \texttt{Fortran} implementations, for the computation of Bessel functions. In this first part, we present a \emph{novel, self-contained, efficient,} and \emph{multiprecision} algorithm for evaluating the modified Bessel function of the first kind, $I_ν(z)$. The method integrates several analytic representations of $I_ν(z)$, carefully selected to ensure both high accuracy and suitability for high-precision computation, together with optimally determined transition boundaries between computational regions. This design achieves high efficiency while fully preserving numerical accuracy. Unlike other widely used algorithms and libraries, such as AMOS, Boost, and GSL, which either reject negative orders $ν$ or rely on special-case symmetries valid only for integer orders, the present algorithm provides a stable approach for evaluating $I_ν(z)$ for arbitrary real orders, including $ν< 0$, and complex arguments $z$. The developed robust \texttt{Fortran} implementation provides support for both double and native quadruple-precision arithmetic. The availability of quadruple precision further enhances numerical stability, extends the reliable computational domain in $(ν, |z|)$ by approximately an order of magnitude in each direction, and enables accuracies exceeding 26 significant digits. This advancement substantially broadens the applicability of the method to demanding high-precision problems in science and engineering. Compared to AMOS (Algorithm~644), which is restricted to double precision, the present algorithm exhibits superior accuracy and efficiency, with benchmark tests demonstrating execution times reduced to 38--71\% of those of AMOS in double precision.

Efficient Multi-Precision Computation of Bessel Functions for Real Orders and Complex Arguments with Fortran Implementation -- Part II: The Modified Bessel Function of the Second Kind, $K_ν(z)$

This paper, the second in a series, presents an efficient, self-contained algorithm for computing the modified Bessel function of the second kind, \(K_ν(z)\) for complex argument and real orders, building on Part~I (for \(I_ν\)). The method adaptively selects among analytic representations such as power series, large-\(|z|\) asymptotics, uniform asymptotics for large \(|ν|\), and numerically stable forward recurrence with region boundaries tuned for accuracy and efficiency. A robust \texttt{Fortran} implementation supports double precision and quadruple precision. The use of quadruple precision extends the reliable computational domain and improves stability in challenging regimes. Accuracy is validated against high-precision \texttt{Maple} results, and benchmarks show runtimes significantly superior to those of established methods, in the literature, while avoiding their numerical failure modes across several decades of the parameter domain. Together with Part~I, this work provides a comprehensive, multiple-precision toolkit for \(\{I_ν,K_ν\}\) across wide parameter ranges.

A highly efficient Voigt program for line profile computation

Evaluation of the Voigt function, a convolution of a Lorentzian and a Gaussian profile, is essential in various fields such as spectroscopy, atmospheric science, and astrophysics. Efficient computation of the function is crucial, especially in applications where the function may be called for an enormous number of times. In this paper, we present a highly efficient novel algorithm and its Fortran90 implementation for the practical evaluation of the Voigt function with accuracy in the order of 1.0e-6. The algorithm uses improved fits based on Chebyshev subinterval polynomial approximation for functions in two variables. The algorithm significantly outperforms widely-used competitive algorithms in the literature, in terms of computational speed, making it highly suitable for real-time applications and large-scale data processing tasks. The substantial improvement in efficiency positions the present algorithm and computer code as a valuable tool in relevant scientific domains. The algorithm has been adopted and implemented in the Meudon PDR code at Paris Observatory and is recommended for similar applications and simulation packages.

Equation-of-State, Critical Constants, and Thermodynamic Properties of Lithium at High Energy Density

High-density lithium plasmas are expected to be generated in the Inertial Confinement Fusion (ICF) reactor chamber due to energy deposition of the prompt X-rays and ion debris in the first wall. These dense plasmas are encountered in many other applications as well. The design and optimization of such lithium-based applications requires information about the thermodynamic properties of Li fluid over a wide range of parameters including the high-energy-density regime. A model that takes into account all essential features of strongly-coupled plasmas of metal vapors is developed and used to predict the equation-of-state (EOS), critical constants, thermodynamic functions, and principal shock Hugoniot of hot dense lithium fluid. Predictions and computational results from the present model are analyzed and presented and are available in electronic form suitable for use to interested researchers and scientists.

On the Cut-off Distance and the Classical Energy-averaged Electron-ion Momentum Transport Cross Section in Ideal and Nonideal Plasmas

The wide use of a speed-independent distance as a cut-off impact parameter together with Rutherford's scattering formula, within the cut-off theory, to account for charge screening in plasma environment embodies a clear inconsistency. A new physically justified choice of the cut-off distance is introduced and used to derive a closed form expression for the effective momentum transport cross section. A simple approximation for the present Coulomb logarithm, free of special functions, is also presented and assessed. A comparison with experimentally recovered data for the reduced Coulomb conductivity showed better agreement and better physical behavior of the present expressions compared to previous cut-off expressions in the literature.

Critical Parameters, Thermodynamic Functions, and Shock Hugoniot of Aluminum Fluid at High Energy Density

We present estimates of the critical properties, thermodynamic functions, and principal shock Hugoniot of hot dense aluminum fluid as predicted from a chemical model for the equation-of-state of hot dense, partially ionized and partially degenerate plasma. The essential features of strongly coupled plasma of metal vapors, such as multiple ionization, Coulomb interactions among charged particles, partial degeneracy, and intensive short range hard core repulsion are taken into consideration. Internal partition functions of neutral, excited, and multiply ionized species are carefully evaluated in a statistical-mechanically consistent way. Results predicted from the present model are presented, analyzed and compared with available experimental measurements and other predictions in the literature. A distinct feature of the predictions of the present model is the appearance of a third kink in the Hugoniot curve at a weaker shock strength which can be attributed to the successive ionization of the three electrons in the M shell.

Algorithm 985: Simple, efficient, and relatively accurate approximation for the evaluation of the Faddeyeva function

We present a new simple algorithm for efficient, and relatively accurate computation of the Faddeyeva function w(z). The algorithm carefully exploits previous approximations by Hui et al [1978] and Humlicek [1982] along with asymptotic expressions from Laplace continued fractions. Over a wide and fine grid of the complex argument, z=x+iy, numerical results from the present approximation show a maximum relative error less than 4.0x10-5 for both real and imaginary parts of w while running in a relatively shorter execution time than other competitive techniques. In addition to the calculation of the Faddeyeva function, w, partial derivatives of the real and imaginary parts of the function can easily be calculated and returned as optional output.

Dissociation and ionization equilibria of deuterium fluid over a wide range of temperatures and densities

We investigate the dissociation and ionization equilibria of deuterium fluid over a wide range of temperatures and densities. The partition functions for molecular and atomic species are evaluated, in a statistical-mechanically consistent way, implementing recent developments in the literature and taking high-density effects into account. A new chemical model (free energy function) is introduced in which the fluid is considered as a mixture of diatomic molecules, atoms, ions and free electrons. Intensive short range hard core repulsion is taken into account together with partial degeneracy of free electrons and Coulomb interactions among charged particles. Samples of computational results are presented as a set of isotherms for the degree of ionization, dissociated fraction of molecules, pressure, and specific internal energy for a wide range of densities and temperatures. Predictions from the present model calculations show an improved and sensible physical behavior compared to other results in the literature.

Tables of equation-of-state, thermodynamic properties, and shock Hugoniot for hot dense fluid deuterium

We present computational results and tables of the equation-of-state, thermodynamic properties, and shock Hugoniot for hot dense fluid deuterium. The present results are generated using a recently developed chemical model that takes into account different high density effects such as Coulomb interactions among charged particles, partial degeneracy, and intensive short range hard core repulsion. Internal partition functions are evaluated in a statistical-mechanically consistent way implementing recent developments in the literature. The shock Hugoniot curve derived from the present tables is in reasonable overall agreement with the Hugoniot derived from the Nova-laser shock wave experiments on liquid deuterium, showing that deuterium has a significantly higher compressibility than predicted by the SESAME tables or by Path Integral Monte Carlo (PIMC) calculations. Computational results are presented as surface plots for the dissociated fraction, degree of ionization, pressure, and specific internal energy for densities ranging from 0.0001 to 40 g/cm3 and temperatures from 2000 to ~ 106 K. Tables for values of the above mentioned quantities in addition to the specific heat at constant pressure, cp, ratio of specific heats, cp/cv, sound speed and Hugoniot curve (for a specific initial state) are presented for practical use.

Remark on "Algorithm 916: Computing the Faddeyeva and Voigt functions": Efficiency Improvements and Fortran Translation

This remark describes efficiency improvements to Algorithm 916 [Zaghloul and Ali 2011]. It is shown that the execution time required by the algorithm, when run at its highest accuracy, may be improved by more than a factor of two. A better accuracy vs efficiency trade off scheme is also implemented; this requires the user to supply the number of significant figures desired in the computed values as an extra input argument to the function. Using this trade-off, it is shown that the efficiency of the algorithm may be further improved significantly while maintaining reasonably accurate and safe results that are free of the pitfalls and complete loss of accuracy seen in other competitive techniques. The current version of the code is provided in Matlab and Scilab in addition to a Fortran translation prepared to meet the needs of real-world problems where very large numbers of function evaluations would require the use of a compiled language. To fulfill this last requirement, a recently proposed reformed version of Humlicek's w4 routine, shown to maintain the claimed accuracy of the algorithm over a wide and fine grid is implemented in the present Fortran translation for the case of 4 significant figures. This latter modification assures the reliability of the code to be employed in the solution of practical problems requiring numerous evaluation of the function for applications tolerating low accuracy computations (<10-4).

A simple reform for treating the loss of accuracy of Humlicek's W4 algorithm near the real axis

We present a simple reform for treating the reported problem of loss-of-accuracy near the real axis of Humlicek's w4 algorithm, widely used for the calculation of the Faddeyeva or complex probability function. The reformed routine maintains the claimed accuracy of the algorithm over a wide and fine grid that covers all the domain of the real part, x, of the complex input variable, z=x+iy, and values for the imaginary part in the range y=[10-30, 10+30]

Fundamental View on the Calculation of Internal Partition Functions Using Occupational Probabilities

From first principles, the author gathers a few general rules that need to be abided by in the calculation of the internal partition functions (IPFs) of individual molecules. These rules are violated in many schemes in the literature where occupational probabilities are used including those using the Planck-Larkin partition function (PLPF) within the chemical picture. Considering these rules is useful from conceptual and practical points of view. A solution is introduced to assure fulfilling the above mentioned rules when using occupational probabilities. Sample calculations are performed showing quantitative significance of inaccuracies caused by dishonoring such rules.

Algorithm 916: computing the Faddeyeva and Voigt functions

We present a MATLAB function for the numerical evaluation of the Faddeyeva function w(z). The function is based on a newly developed accurate algorithm. In addition to its higher accuracy, the software provides a flexible accuracy vs efficiency trade-off through a controlling parameter that may be used to reduce accuracy and computational time and vice versa. Verification of the flexibility, reliability and superior accuracy of the algorithm is provided through comparison with standard algorithms available in other libraries and software packages.

Inconsistency in Fermi's probability of the quantum states

We point out an important hidden inconsistency in Fermi's probability of the quantum states that engendered inconsistent/inaccurate equations-of-state extensively used in the literature to model nonideal plasma systems. The importance of this amendment goes beyond rectifying our comprehension and foundation of an important physical problem to influencing contemporary research results.

On the ionization equilibrium of hot hydrogen plasma and thermodynamic-consistency of formulating finite internal partition functions

The problem of formulating a thermodynamically-consistent finite internal partition function (IPF) in nonideal hydrogen plasma systems is investigated and analyzed within the chemical picture revealing inaccuracies and inconsistencies buried in widely used formulations in the literature. The analysis carried out here, though performed for the simplest case of pure nonideal hydrogen plasma, it shows all specific features of the problem and is extendable to the general case of a complex multi-component plasma mixture. A criterion for the separability of the configurational component of the free energy is presented and an accurate and consistent formulation of the problem is introduced. The presented criterion and the introduced consistent formulation of the problem clear ambiguities in other formulations in the literature and provide a better understanding of the problem. An illustrative example is worked out showing simplicity and effectiveness of the proposed consistent formulation and the importance of terms, essential for thermodynamic consistency, which are commonly neglected by other authors in the literature.

On the calculation of equilibrium thermodynamic properties and the establishment of statistical-thermodynamically-consistent finite bound-state partition functions in nonideal multi-component plasma mixtures within the chemical model

The problem of the calculation of equilibrium thermodynamic properties and the establishment of statistical-thermodynamically-consistent finite bound-state partition functions in nonideal multi-component plasma systems is revised within the chemical picture. The present exploration accompanied by the introduction of a generalized accurate formulation, in terms of the solution of the inverse problem, clears ambiguities and gives a better understanding of the problem on top of pointing out weaknesses and inaccuracies/inconsistencies buried in widely used models in the literature.
