A Grassmann formula for the spectral order of matrices

For Hermitian matrices $A$ and $B$, we prove that $(A\join B)\oplus(A\meet B)$ is unitarily equivalent to $A\oplus B$, where the join and meet are taken in Olson's spectral order. Taking traces answers a question of Bourin and Lee: for positive semidefinite matrices, $\Tr(A\join B)=\Tr(A+B)$ if and only if $A\meet B=0$. Iterating the direct-sum identity gives a trace formula for a finite family of positive matrices. The trace of the spectral supremum equals the trace of the sum precisely when the ranges form an algebraic direct sum. For each fixed $1<p<\infty$, the spectral supremum and the sum have equal Schatten $p$-norms if and only if the ranges are pairwise orthogonal. Finally we establish an elegant formula for the Frobenius inner product and the spectral order.

Solutions to some open problems in matrix analysis

We solve a problem posed by Audenaert and Kittaneh in 2012 by proving that the Aujla--Bourin subadditivity inequality can be strengthened to an optimal form. We also answer questions posed by Bourin and the second author: (1) we significantly extend both the reciprocal Lie--Trotter theorem of Audenaert and Hiai and Kato's limit theorem; (2) we determine the best constants in inequalities for sums of contractions and positive block matrices, including the sharp triangle inequality $$ |A+B+C| \leq \frac{3}{4} I + |A|+|B|+|C| $$ for three contractions $A,B,C$; and (3) we prove a remarkable eigenvalue inequality for the symmetric modulus, thereby determining the best dimension-free lower bound in a question studied by Bourin, Lee, and Zhang.

A proof of the Fong--Tsui conjecture

We prove that a bounded operator $T$ on a complex Hilbert space is self-adjoint whenever $|T|\leq|\re T|$, as conjectured by Fong and Tsui \cite{FT}.

Sharp spectral constants for scaled $q$-numerical ranges

For $ n \geq 2$, $A\in M_n(\mathbb C)$ and $0<|q|\leq 1$, let $Ω_q(A)=q^{-1}W_q(A)$ be the scaled $q$-numerical range. We prove that for every $γ\geq 1$, \[ Ω_{η(γ)}(A) =\bigcup_{κ(S)\leqγ}W(S^{-1}AS), \qquad η(γ)=\frac{2}{γ+γ^{-1}}, \] where $κ(S)=\|S\|\,\|S^{-1}\|$. As a consequence, we prove the sharp inequality \[ \|p(A)\|\leq \max\!\left\{1,\frac{2|q|}{1+\sqrt{1-|q|^2}}\right\} \max_{z\inΩ_q(A)}|p(z)|, \] for all polynomials $p$.

On $m$-partial isometries: spectra, weighted shifts, and similarity

The aim of this paper is to study $m$-partial isometries on Hilbert spaces, a natural extension of partial isometries and $m$-isometries. We establish structural and spectral results, characterize the $m$-partial isometric weighted shifts, and investigate similarity to $m$-isometries and $m$-partial isometries.
