On the class number of real multiquadratic fields

In their 1988 monograph, Conner and Hurrelbrink classified all real quadratic and biquadratic fields with odd class number. They also investigated real quadratic fields whose $2$-class numbers are equal to $2$. Their results, together with some well-known results of Ku{č}era, provide a complete classification of real quadratic number fields with $2$-class number $2$. The main aim of this paper is to provide a complete classification of all real biquadratic fields whose $2$-class numbers equal $2$; and moreover, we draw the complete list all real multiquadratic fields with odd class numbers. Finally, as an appendix we give explicit formulas for $\sqrt{\varepsilon_d}$, where $\varepsilon_d$ denotes the fundamental unit of the real quadratic field $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{d})$.

On the maximal unramified pro-2-extension of $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension of certain real biquadratic fields

For any positive integer $n$, we show that there exists a real number field $k$ (resp. $k'$) of degree $2^{n+2}$ whose $2$-class group is isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ such that the Galois group of the maximal unramified extension of $k$ (resp. $k'$) over $k$ (resp. $k'$) is abelian (resp. non abelian, more precisely isomorphic to $Q_8$ or $D_8$, the quaternion and the dihedral group of order $8$ respectively). In fact, we construct the first examples in the literature of families of real biquadratic fields for which the layers of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension satisfy the previous conditions and whose unramified abelian $2$-Iwasawa modules are isomorphic to $\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}\times \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$; hence these fields satisfy Greenberg's conjecture.

On the Existence of the Maximal Unramified Pro-$2$-Extension over the Cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Extension with Prescribed Metacyclic Galois Group

For an integer $m\geq 2$, we aim to investigate the realizability of types of metacyclic-nonmodular groups, whose abelianization is $\mathbb{Z}/2 \mathbb{Z}\times\mathbb{Z}/2^m \mathbb{Z}$, as the Galois group of the maximal unramified $2$-extension (resp. pro-$2$-extension) over certain number fields of $2$-power degree (resp. cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_2$-extensions). Furthermore, we present some new techniques for studying Greenberg's conjecture for some number fields. In particular, the reader can find results concerning the real quadratic fields $F=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{ηq rs})$, the real biquadratic fields $K=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{ηq},\sqrt{rs})$, with $η\in\{1,2\}$, and the Fröhlich multiquadratic fields of the form $\mathbb{F}=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{q }, \sqrt {r}, \sqrt{s})$, where $q$, $r$ and $s$ are odd prime numbers.

On the Narrow 2-Class Field Tower of Some Real Quadratic Number Fields: Lengths Heuristics Follow-Up

In this article we continue the investigation of the length of the narrow $2$-class field tower of real quadratic number fields $\mathrm{k}$ whose discriminants are not a sum of two squares and for which their $2$-class groups are elementary of order $4$. Letting $\mathrm{G}$ equal the Galois group of the second Hilbert narrow $2$-class field over $\mathrm{k}$, and $[\mathrm{G}_i]$ denote the lower central series of $\mathrm{G}$, we give heuristic evidence that the length of the narrow $2$-class field tower of $\mathrm{k}$ is equal to $2$ when $\mathrm{G}/\mathrm{G}_3$ is of type $64.150$ (in the tables of Hall and Senior). We also give the formulation of the relevant unit groups of the narrow Hilbert $2$-class field for these fields.

Greenberg's conjecture and Iwasawa module of Real biquadratic fields II

In this paper we are interested in the stability of the $2$-rank of the class group in the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension of real biquadratic fields. In fact, we give several families of real biquadratic fields $K$ such that $ rank(A(K)) =rank(A_\infty(K))$ and $rank(A(K))\leq 3$, where $A(K)$ and $A_\infty(K)$ are the $2$-class group and the $2$-Iwasawa module of $K$ respectively. Moreover, Greenberg's conjecture is verified for some new families of number fields; in particular, we determine the complete list of all real biquadratic fields with trivial $2$-Iwasawa module. This work is a continuation of M. M. Chems-Eddin, Greenberg's conjecture and Iwasawa module of real biquadratic fields I, J. Number Theory, 281 (2026), 224-266.

Greenberg's conjecture and Iwasawa module of Real biquadratic fields I

The main aim of this paper is to investigate Greenberg's conjecture for real biquadratic fields. More precisely, we propose the following problem: What are real biquadratic number fields $k$ such that ${\rm rank}(A(k_\infty)) = {\rm rank}(A(k_1))$?, where $A(k_\infty)$ is the $2$-Iwasawa module of $k$ and $A(k_1)$ is the $2$-class group of $k_1$ the first layer of the cyclotomic $\mathbb Z_2$-extension of $k$. Moreover, we give several families of real biquadratic fields $k$ such that $A(k_\infty)$ is trivial or isomorphic to $\mathbb Z/2^{n} \mathbb Z$ or $\mathbb Z/2\mathbb Z \times\mathbb Z/2^n \mathbb Z$, where $n$ is a given positive integer. The reader can also find some results concerning the $2$-rank of the class group of certain real triquadratic fields.

On the unit group of some multiquadratic fields

In this paper, we calculate the unit groups and the $2$-class numbers of the fields $ \mathbb{K}= \mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{p_1}, \sqrt{p_2})$ and $ \mathbb{L}= \mathbb{Q}( \sqrt{-1},\sqrt{2}, \sqrt{p_1}, \sqrt{p_2})$, where $p_1$ and $p_2$ are two prime numbers satisfying $p_1\equiv p_2 \equiv 1 \pmod{4}$.

On the Krull dimension of rings of integer-valued rational functions

Let $D$ be an integral domain with quotient field $K$ and $E$ a subset of $K$. The \textit{ring of integer-valued rational functions on} $E$ is defined as $$\mathrm{int}_R(E,D):=\lbrace φ\in K(X);\; φ(E)\subseteq D\rbrace.$$ The main goal of this paper is to investigate the Krull dimension of the ring $\mathrm{int}_R(E,D).$ Particularly, we are interested in domains that are either Jaffard or PVDs. Interesting results are established with some illustrating examples.

On rings of integer-valued rational functions

Let $D\subseteq B$ be an extension of integral domains and $E$ a subset of the quotient field of $D$. We introduce the ring of \textit{$D$-valued $B$-rational functions on $E$}, denoted by $Int^R_B(E,D)$, which naturally extends the concepts of integer-valued polynomials, defined as $ Int^R_B(E,D) \:=\lbrace f \in B(X);\; f(E)\subseteq D\rbrace.$ The notion of $Int^R_B(E,D)$ boils down to the usual notion of integer-valued rational functions when the subset $E$ is infinite. In this paper, we aim to investigate various properties of these rings, such as prime ideals, localization, and the module structure. Furthermore, we study the transfer of some ring-theoretic properties from $Int^R(E,D)$ to $D$.

Arithmetic of some real triquadratic fields; Units and 2-class groups

In this paper, we compute the unit groups and the $2$-class numbers of the Fröhlich's triquadratic fields $\KK=\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{2},\sqrt{p},\sqrt{q})$, where $p$ and $q$ are two prime numbers such that ($p\equiv 1 \pmod8$ and $q\equiv 3 \pmod4$) or ($p\equiv 5$ or $3 \pmod8$ and $q\equiv 3 \pmod4$). Furthermore, we determine some families of the fields $\KK$ whose $2$-class groups are trivial or cyclic non trivial, and some other families with $2$-class groups isomorphic to the Klein group.

Hilbert genus fields of some number fields with high degrees

The aim of this paper is to give some properties of Hilbert genus fields and construct the Hilbert genus fields of the fields $L_{m,d}:=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{2^m},\sqrt{d})$, where $m\geq 3$ is a positive integer and $d$ is a square-free integer whose prime divisors are congruent to $\pm 3\pmod 8$ or $9\pmod{16}$.

The construction of the Hilbert genus fields of real cyclic quartic fields

Let $p$ be a prime number such that $p=2$ or $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$. Let $\varepsilon_p$ denote the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ and let $a$ be a positive square-free integer. In the present paper, we construct the Hilbert genus field of the real cyclic quartic fields $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{a\varepsilon_p\sqrt{p}})$.

Let $p$ be a prime number such that $p=2$ or $p\equiv 1\pmod 4$. Let $\varepsilon_p$ denote the fundamental unit of $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{p})$ and let $a$ be a positive square-free integer. The main aim of this paper is to determine explicitly the Hilbert genus field of the imaginary cyclic quartic fields of the form $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{-a\varepsilon_p\sqrt{p}})$.

On the Hilbert $2$-class field towers of some cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extensions

In this paper, we study the length of the $2$-class field towers and the structure of the Galois groups $\mathrm{Gal}(\mathcal{L}(K_n)/K_n)$ of the maximal unramified $2$-extensions of the layers $K_n$ of the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extension of some special Dirichlet fields. The capitulation problem is investigated too.

On the $2$-class group of some number fields with large degree

Let $d$ be an odd square-free integer, $m\geq 3$ any integer and $L_{m, d}:=\mathbb{Q}(ζ_{2^m},\sqrt{d})$. In this paper, we shall determine all the fields $L_{m, d}$ having an odd class number. Furthermore, using the cyclotomic $\mathbb{Z}_2$-extensions of some number fields, we compute the rank of the $2$-class group of $L_{m, d}$ whenever the prime divisors of $d$ are congruent to $3$ or $5\pmod 8$.
