Role of Phonons in Li-Diffusion, Thermal Expansion and Phase Transitions in beta-eucryptite: Inelastic Neutron Scattering and Lattice Dynamics Studies

Beta eucryptite (LiAlSiO4) shows one-dimensional super-ionic conductivity as well as anisotropic thermal expansion behavior. We have performed inelastic neutron scattering measurements in beta eucryptite over 300 to 900 K and calculated the phonon spectrum using ab initio density functional theory method. The calculated energy profile for cooperative lithium ion displacements indicates preferential movement of Li ion along the hexagonal c-axis in the high temperature phase. However, the energy barrier for Li ion diffusion is significantly reduced when a Schottky defect is introduced in the crystal. Further, the anisotropic stress dependence of the phonon spectrum is calculated to obtain the thermal expansion behavior along various axes. The calculations show that the Gruneisen parameters of the low-energy phonon modes around 10 meV have large negative values and govern the negative thermal expansion behavior both along the a and c axes. On the other hand, anisotropic elasticity along with anisotropic positive values of the Gruneisen parameters of the high-energy modes in the range 30 to 70 meV are responsible for positive thermal expansion in the a-b plane and negative expansion along the c-axis. The analysis of the polarization vectors of the phonon modes sheds light on the mechanism of the anomalous thermal expansion behavior. We extend the study to discuss the relationship of the soft phonons in the Brillouin zone with the observed high-pressure and high-temperature phase transitions as reported in the literature.

Spin-Phonon Coupling and High-Temperature Phase Transition in Multiferroic Material YMnO3

We have carried out temperature-dependent inelastic neutron scattering measurements of YMnO3 over the temperature range 50 - 1303 K, covering both the antiferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition (70 K), as well as the ferroelectric to paraelectric transition (1258 K). Measurements are accompanied by first principles calculations of phonon spectra for the sake of interpretation and analysis of the measured phonon spectra in the room temperature ferroelectric (P63cm) and high temperature paraelectric (P63/mmc) hexagonal phases of YMnO3. The comparison of the experimental and first-principles calculated phonon spectra highlight unambiguously a spin-phonon coupling character in YMnO3. This is further supported by the pronounced differences in the magnetic and non-magnetic phonon calculations. The calculated atomistic partial phonon contributions of the Y and Mn atoms are not affected by inclusion of magnetic interactions, whereas the dynamical contribution of the O atoms is found tochange. This highlights the role of the super-exchange interactions between the magnetic Mn cations, mediated by O bridges. Phonon dispersion relations have also been calculated, in the entire Brillouin zone, for both the hexagonal phases. In the high-temperature phase, unstable phonon mode at the K point is highlighted. The displacement pattern at the K-point indicates that the freezing of this mode along with the stable mode at the Γ-point may lead to a stabilization of the low-temperature (P63cm) phase, and inducing ferroelectricity. Further, we have also estimated the mode Grüneisen parameter and volume thermal expansion behavior. The latter is found to agree with the available experimental data.

Electronic and vibronic properties of a discotic liquid-crystal and its charge transfer complex

Discotic liquid crystalline (DLC) charge transfer (CT) complexes combine visible light absorption and rapid charge transfer characteristics within the CT complex, being favorable properties for photovoltaic (PV) applications. We present a detailed study of the electronic and vibrational properties of the prototypic 1:1 mixture of discotic 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexakishexyloxytriphenylene (HAT6) and 2,4,7-trinitro-9-fluorenone (TNF). It is shown that intermolecular charge transfer occurs in the groundstate of the complex: a charge delocalization of about 10-2 electron from the HAT6 core to TNF is deduced from both Raman and our previous NMR measurements (Reference 32), implying the presence of permanent dipoles at the donor-acceptor interface. A combined analysis of density functional theory calculations, resonant Raman and UV-VIS absorption measurements indicate that fast relaxation occurs in the UV region due to intramolecular vibronic coupling of HAT6 quinoidal modes with lower lying electronic states. Relatively slower relaxation in the visible region CT-band of the complex is also indicated, which likely involves motions of the TNF nitro groups. The fast quinoidal relaxation process in the hot UV band of HAT6 relates to pseudo-Jahn-Teller interactions in a single benzene unit, suggesting that the underlying vibronic coupling mechanism can be generic for polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Both the presence of CT dipoles and relatively slow relaxation processes in the CT band can be relevant concerning the design of DLC based organic PV systems.

Phonon-Magnon coupling in CoF$_2$ investigated by time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy

We report the results of inelastic neutron scattering investigation on the model antiferromagnet CoF$_2$ by time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy. We measured the details of the scattering function $S(Q,ω)$ as a function of temperature with two different incident neutron wavelengths. The temperature and Q dependence of the measured scattering function suggests the presence of magnon-phonon coupling in almost all branches. The present results are in agreement with the strong magnetoelastic effects observed previously.

Negative thermal expansion in ZnF$_2$

We have investigated temperature dependence of the lattice parameters and the unit cell volume of ZnF$_2$ by neutron diffraction and have discovered negative thermal expansion (NTE) at low temperature. To understand why this simple compound exhibits NTE we performed first principle calculations. These calculations reproduce qualitatively the experimental temperature dependence of volume.

Magnetic Lattice Dynamics of the Oxygen-Free FeAs Pnictides: How Sensitive are Phonons to Magnetic Ordering?

To shed light on the role of magnetism on the superconducting mechanism of the oxygen-free FeAs pnictides, we investigate the effect of magnetic ordering on phonon dynamics in the low-temperature orthorhombic parent compounds, which present a spin-density wave. The study covers both the 122 (AFe2As2; A=Ca, Sr, Ba) and 1111 (AFeAsF; A=Ca, Sr) phases. We extend our recent work on the Ca (122 and 1111) and Ba (122) cases by treating computationally and experimentally the 122 and 1111 Sr compounds. The effect of magnetic ordering is investigated through detailed non-magnetic and magnetic lattice dynamical calculations. The comparison of the experimental and calculated phonon spectra shows that the magnetic interactions/ordering have to be included in order to reproduce well the measured density of states. This highlights a spin-correlated phonon behavior which is more pronounced than the apparently weak electron-phonon coupling estimated in these materials. Furthermore, there is no noticeable difference between phonon spectra of the 122 Ba and Sr, whereas there are substantial differences when comparing these to CaFe2As2 originating from different aspects of structure and bonding.
