How to Coordinate Edge Devices for Over-the-Air Federated Learning?

This work studies the task of device coordination in wireless networks for over-the-air federated learning (OTA-FL). For conventional metrics of aggregation error, the task is shown to describe the zero-forcing (ZF) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) schemes and reduces to the NP-hard problem of subset selection. We tackle this problem by studying properties of the optimal scheme. Our analytical results reveal that this scheme is found by searching among the leaves of a tree with favorable monotonic features. Invoking these features, we develop a low-complexity algorithm that approximates the optimal scheme by tracking a dominant path of the tree sequentially. Our numerical investigations show that the proposed algorithm closely tracks the optimal scheme.

GLSE Precoders for Massive MIMO Systems: Analysis and Applications

This paper proposes the class of Generalized Least-Square-Error (GLSE) precoders for multiuser massive MIMO systems. For a generic transmit constellation, GLSE precoders minimize the interference at user terminals assuring that given constraints on the transmit signals are satisfied. The general form of these precoders enables us to impose multiple restrictions at the transmit signal such as limited peak power and restricted number of active transmit antennas. Invoking the replica method from statistical mechanics, we study the performance of GLSE precoders in the large-system limit. We show that the output symbols of these precoders are identically distributed and their statistics are described with an equivalent scalar GLSE precoder. Using the asymptotic results, we further address some applications of the GLSE precoders; namely forming transmit signals over a restricted alphabet and transmit antenna selection. Our investigations demonstrate that a computationally efficient GLSE precoder requires $41\%$ fewer active transmit antennas than conventional selection protocols in order to achieve a desired level of input-output distortion.

RLS Recovery with Asymmetric Penalty: Fundamental Limits and Algorithmic Approaches

This paper studies regularized least square recovery of signals whose samples' prior distributions are nonidentical, e.g., signals with time-variant sparsity. For this model, Bayesian framework suggests to regularize the least squares term with an asymmetric penalty. We investigate this problem in two respects: First, we characterize the asymptotic performance via the replica method and then discuss algorithmic approaches to the problem. Invoking the asymptotic characterization of the performance, we propose a tuning strategy to optimally tune the algorithmic approaches for recovery. To demonstrate applications of the results, the particular example of BPSK recovery is investigated and the efficiency of the proposed strategy is depicted in the shadow of results available in the literature

Precoding via Approximate Message Passing with Instantaneous Signal Constraints

This paper proposes a low complexity precoding algorithm based on the recently proposed Generalized Least Square Error (GLSE) scheme with generic penalty and support. The algorithm iteratively constructs the transmit vector via Approximate Message Passing (AMP). Using the asymptotic decoupling property of GLSE precoders, we derive closed form fixed point equations to tune the parameters in the proposed algorithm for a general set of instantaneous signal constraints. The tuning strategy is then utilized to construct transmit vectors with restricted peak-to-average power ratios and to efficiently select a subset of transmit antennas. The numerical investigations show that the proposed algorithm tracks the large-system performance of GLSE precoders even for a moderate number of antennas.

LSE Precoders for Massive MIMO with Signal Constraints: Fundamental Limits

This paper proposes the nonlinear Least Square Error (LSE) precoders for multiuser MIMO broadcast channels. The output signals of LSE Precoders are limited to be chosen from a predefined set which let these precoders address several constraints such as peak power limitation, constant envelope transmission and discrete constellations. We study the large-system performance of these precoders via the replica method from statistical physics, and derive a closed-form expression for the asymptotic distortion. Our results demonstrate that an LSE precoder with the output peak-to-average power ratio of $3~{\rm dB}$ can track the performance of the Regularized Zero Forcing (RZF) precoder closely. As the peak-to-average power ratio reduces to one, the constant envelope precoder is recovered. The investigations depict that the performance of the RZF precoder is achieved by the constant envelope precoder with $20\%$ of more transmit antennas. For $M$-PSK constellations, our analysis gives a lower-bound on the asymptotic distortion which is tight for moderate antenna-to-user ratios and deviates as the ratio grows. We improve this bound by deriving the replica solution under one-step of replica symmetry breaking. Our numerical investigations for this case show that the bound is tight for antenna-to-user ratios less than $5$.

Asymptotics of Nonlinear LSE Precoders with Applications to Transmit Antenna Selection

This paper studies the large-system performance of Least Square Error (LSE) precoders which~minimize~the~input-output distortion over an arbitrary support subject to a general penalty function. The asymptotics are determined via the replica method in a general form which encloses the Replica Symmetric (RS) and Replica Symmetry Breaking (RSB) ansätze. As a result, the "marginal decoupling property" of LSE precoders for $b$-steps of RSB is derived. The generality of the studied setup enables us to address special cases in which the number of active transmit antennas are constrained. Our numerical investigations depict that the computationally efficient forms of LSE precoders based on "$\ell_1$-norm" minimization perform close to the cases with "zero-norm" penalty function which have a considerable improvements compared to the random antenna selection. For the case with BPSK signals and restricted number of active antennas, the results show that RS fails to predict the performance while the RSB ansatz is consistent with theoretical bounds.

Nonlinear Precoders for Massive MIMO Systems with General Constraints

We introduce a class of nonlinear least square error precoders with a general penalty function for multiuser massive MIMO systems. The generality of the penalty function allows us to consider several hardware limitations including transmitters with a predefined constellation and restricted number of active antennas. The large-system performance is then investigated via the replica method under the assumption of replica symmetry. It is shown that the least square precoders exhibit the "marginal decoupling property" meaning that the marginal distributions of all precoded symbols converge to a deterministic distribution. As a result, the asymptotic performance of the precoders is described by an equivalent single-user system. To address some applications of the results, we further study the asymptotic performance of the precoders when both the peak-to-average power ratio and number of active transmit antennas are constrained. Our numerical investigations show that for a desired distortion at the receiver side, proposed forms of the least square precoders need to employ around %35\%$ fewer number of active antennas compared to cases with random transmit antenna selection.

Asymptotic Performance Analysis of Spatially Reconfigurable Antenna Arrays

A spatially reconfigurable antenna arrays consists of an antenna array of finite length and fixed geometry which is displaced within a given area. Using these reconfigurable components, the performance of MIMO systems is remarkably improved by effectively positioning the array in its displacement area. This paper studies the large-system performance of MIMO setups with spatially reconfigurable antenna arrays when the displacement area is large. Considering fading channels, the distribution of the input-output mutual information is derived, and the asymptotic hardening property is demonstrated to hold. As the size of the displacement area grows large, the mutual information is shown to converge in distribution to a type-one Gumbel random variable whose mean grows large proportional to the displacement size, and whose variance tends to zero. Our numerical investigations depict that the type-one Gumbel approximation closely tracks the empirical distribution even for a finite displacement size.

On Optimum Asymptotic Multiuser Efficiency of Randomly Spread CDMA

We extend the result by Tse and Verdú on the optimum asymptotic multiuser efficiency of randomly spread CDMA with Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) input. Random Gaussian and random binary antipodal spreading are considered. We obtain the optimum asymptotic multiuser efficiency of a $K$-user system with spreading gain $N$ when $K$ and $N\rightarrow\infty$ and the loading factor, $\frac{K}{N}$, grows logarithmically with $K$ under some conditions. It is shown that the optimum detector in a Gaussian randomly spread CDMA system has a performance close to the single user system at high Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) when $K$ and $N\rightarrow\infty$ and the loading factor, $\frac{K}{N}$, is kept less than $\frac{\log_3K}{2}$. Random binary antipodal matrices are also studied and a lower bound for the optimum asymptotic multiuser efficiency is obtained. Furthermore, we investigate the connection between detecting matrices in the coin weighing problem and optimum asymptotic multiuser efficiency. We obtain a condition such that for any binary input, an $N\times K$ random matrix whose entries are chosen randomly from a finite set, is a detecting matrix as $K$ and $N\rightarrow \infty$.
