Spin-orbit torque on nuclear spins exerted by a spin accumulation via hyperfine interactions

Spin-transfer and spin-orbit torques allow controlling magnetic degrees of freedom in various materials and devices. However, while the transfer of angular momenta between electrons has been widely studied, the contribution of nuclear spins has yet to be explored further. This article demonstrates that the hyperfine coupling, which consists of Fermi contact and dipolar interactions, can mediate the application of spin-orbit torques acting on nuclear spins. Our starting point is a sizable nuclear spin in a metal with electronic spin accumulation. Then, via the hyperfine interactions, the nuclear spin modifies the an electronic spin density. The reactions to the equilibrium and nonequilibrium components of the spin density is a torque on the nucleus with field-like and damping-like components, respectively. This nuclear spin-orbit torque is a step toward stabilizing and controlling nuclear magnetic momenta, in magnitude and direction, and realizing nuclear spintronics.

Even-denominator fractional quantum Hall state in conventional triple-gated quantum point contact

The even-denominator states have attracted considerable attention owing to their possible applications in future quantum technologies. In this letter, we first report a 3/2 diagonal resistance, indicating the existence of a 3/2 state in a nanometer-sized triple-gated quantum point contact (QPC) fabricated on a high-mobility (not ultra-high-mobility) single-layer two-dimensional (2D) GaAs wafer. The center gate plays a crucial role in realizing the QPC's 3/2 state. Our observation of the 3/2 state using a conventional QPC device, which is a suitable building block for semiconductor quantum devices, paves a new path for the development of semiconductor-based quantum technologies.

The quest and hope of Majorana zero modes in topological superconductor for fault-tolerant quantum computing: an introductory overview

Ettore Majorana, in his short life, unintendedly has uncovered the most profound problem in quantum computation by his discovery of Majorana fermion, a particle which is its own anti-particle. Owing to its non-Abelian exchange statistics, Majorana fermions may act as a qubit for a universal quantum computer which is fault-tolerant. The existence of such particle is predicted in mid-gap states (zero modes) of a topological superconductor as bound states that have a highly entangled degenerate ground state. This introductory overview will focus on the simplest theoretical proposals of Majorana fermions for topological quantum computing in superconducting systems, emphasizing the quest from the scalability problem of quantum computer to its possible solution with topological quantum computer employing non-Abelian anyons on various platforms of certain Majorana fermion signature encountered.

Fabry-Pérot interference in a triple-gated quantum point contact

We demonstrated that a triple-gated GaAs quantum point contact, which has an additional surface gate between a pair of split gates to strengthen the lateral confinement, produces the well-defined quantized conductance and Fabry-Pérot-type (FP-type) oscillations on it even using a relatively low mobility wafer. A one-dimensional phenomenological model potential was developed to explain the oscillatory behavior. By combining the model calculations and dc bias spectroscopy, we obtained detailed information about the energy scales of the oscillatory structures. The relationships between the FP-type oscillations and the anomaly below the first plateau will be addressed.
