Identification for ISI Gaussian Channels

We establish lower and upper bounds for the identification capacity of discrete-time Gaussian channels subject to inter-symbol interference (ISI), a canonical model in wireless communication. Our analysis accounts for deterministic encoders under peak power constraint. A principal finding is that, even when the number of ISI taps scales sub-linearly with the codeword length $n$ as $\sim n^κ$ with $κ\in [0,1/2),$ the number of messages that can be reliably identified grows super-exponentially in $n$ as $\sim 2^{(n \log n)R},$ where $R$ denotes the coding rate.

Identification for Inverse Gaussian Channels

We derive lower and upper bounds on the identification capacity of inverse Gaussian channels, a fundamental model for molecular communications in fluid environments. The analysis considers deterministic encoding schemes under a peak time constraint and characterizes the asymptotic growth of optimal codebook sizes. In the converse, by leveraging the Borel-Cantelli lemma and the super-exponential near-zero tail behavior of the inverse Gaussian distribution, we establish an almost-sure lower bound on the first-passage time of drifting diffusing molecules. This leads to the conclusion that the identification capacity exhibits super-exponential growth with the codeword length $n$, i.e., $\sim 2^{(n \log n)R_n}$, where $R_n$ is the coding rate.

Identification for Colored Gaussian Channels

We study the identification capacity of discrete-time Gaussian channels impaired by correlated noise and inter-symbol interference (ISI). Our analysis is formulated for deterministic encoding functions subject to a peak power constraint and colored noise whose covariance matrix features a polynomially bounded singular value spectrum, i.e., $\sim [n^{-μ} , n^{μ/2}]$ where $n$ is the codeword length and $μ\in [0,1/2)$ is the spectrum rate. A central result establishes that, even when the ISI memory length grows sub-linearly with $n,$ i.e., $\sim n^κ$ where $κ\in [0,1/2)$ and $κ+ μ\in [0,1/2),$ the codebook size continues to exhibit super-exponential growth in $n$, i.e., $\sim 2^{(n \log n)R},$ with $R$ representing the associated coding rate. Moreover, by employing the well-known Mahalanobis-distance decoder induced by colored Gaussian noise statistics, we characterize bounds on the identification capacity, with the resulting bounds parameterized by $κ$ and $μ.$

Identification over Affine Poisson Channels: Application to Molecular Mixture Communication Systems

Identification capacity has been established as a relevant performance metric for various goal-/task-oriented applications, where the receiver may be interested in only a particular message that represents an event or a task. For example, in olfactory molecular communications (MCs), odors or pheromones, which are often a mixture of various molecule types, may signal nearby danger, food, or a mate. In this paper, we examine the identification capacity with deterministic encoder for the discrete affine Poisson channel which can be used to model MC systems with molecule counting receivers. We establish lower and upper bounds on the identification capacity in terms of features of the affinity matrix between the released molecules and receptors at the receiver. As a key finding, we show that even when the number of receptor types scales sub-linearly in the number of molecule types $N,$ the number of reliably identifiable messages can grow super-exponentially with the rank of the affinity matrix, $T,$ i.e., $\sim 2^{(T \log T)R},$ where $R$ denotes the coding rate. We further derive lower and upper bounds on $R,$ and show that the proposed capacity theorem includes several known results in the literature as its special cases.

Identification Codes via Prime Numbers

We introduce a method for construction of identification codes based on prime number generation over the noiseless channels. The earliest method for such construction based on prime numbers was proposed by Ahlswede which relies on algorithms for generation of prime numbers. This method requires knowledge of $2^n$ first prime numbers for identification codes with block length $n,$ which is not computationally efficient. In this work, we revisit Ahlswede's scheme and propose a number of modifications. In particular, employing probabilistic prime generation algorithm, we guarantee that the prime keys generation is possible in polynomial time. Furthermore, additional improvements in terms of type II upper bound are derived and presented. Finally, we propose a method for identification coding based on hash functions which generalizes the Ahlswede's scheme.

Identification via Functions

We develop a framework for studying the problem of identifying roots of a noisy function. We revisit a previous logarithmic bound on the number of observations and propose a general problem for identification of roots with three errors. As a key finding, we establish a novel logarithmic lower bound on the number of observations which outperforms the previous result across certain regimes of error and accuracy of the identification test. Furthermore, we recover the previous results for root identification as a special case and draw a connection to the message identification problem of Ahlswede.

Deterministic K-Identification For Binary Symmetric Channel

Deterministic K-Identification (DKI) for the binary symmetric channel (BSC) is developed. A full characterization of the DKI capacity for such a channel, with and without the Hamming weight constraint, is established. As a key finding, we find that for deterministic encoding the number of identifiable messages $K$ may grow exponentially with the codeword length $n$, i.e., $K = 2^{κn}$, where $κ$ is the target identification rate. Furthermore, the eligible region for $κ$ as a function of the channel statistics, i.e., the crossover probability, is determined.

Deterministic Identification For MC Binomial Channel

The Binomial channel serves as a fundamental model for molecular communication (MC) systems employing molecule-counting receivers. Here, deterministic identification (DI) is addressed for the discrete-time Binomial channels (DTBC), subject to an average and a peak constraint on the molecule release rate. We establish that the number of different messages that can be reliably identified for the DTBC scales as $2^{(n\log n)R}$, where $n$ and $R$ are the codeword length and coding rate, respectively. Lower and upper bounds on the DI capacity of the DTBC are developed.

Deterministic $K$-identification For Slow Fading Channel

Deterministic $K$-identification (DKI) is addressed for Gaussian channels with slow fading (GSF), where the transmitter is restricted to an average power constraint and channel side information is available at the decoder. We derive lower and upper bounds on the DKI capacity when the number of identifiable messages $K$ may grow sub-linearly with the codeword length $n$. As a key finding, we establish that for deterministic encoding, assuming that the number of identifiable messages $K = 2^{κ\log n}$ with $κ\in [0,1)$ being the identification target rate, the codebook size scales as $2^{(n\log n)R}$, where $R$ is the coding rate.

Deterministic Identification For MC ISI-Poisson Channel

Several applications of molecular communications (MC) feature an alarm-prompt behavior for which the prevalent Shannon capacity may not be the appropriate performance metric. The identification capacity as an alternative measure for such systems has been motivated and established in the literature. In this paper, we study deterministic identification (DI) for the discrete-time \emph{Poisson} channel (DTPC) with inter-symbol interference (ISI) where the transmitter is restricted to an average and a peak molecule release rate constraint. Such a channel serves as a model for diffusive MC systems featuring long channel impulse responses and employing molecule counting receivers. We derive lower and upper bounds on the DI capacity of the DTPC with ISI when the number of ISI channel taps $K$ may grow with the codeword length $n$ (e.g., due to increasing symbol rate). As a key finding, we establish that for deterministic encoding, the codebook size scales as $2^{(n\log n)R}$ assuming that the number of ISI channel taps scales as $K = 2^{κ\log n}$, where $R$ is the coding rate and $κ$ is the ISI rate. Moreover, we show that optimizing $κ$ leads to an effective identification rate [bits/s] that scales linearly with $n$, which is in contrast to the typical transmission rate [bits/s] that is independent of $n$.

Deterministic Identification for Molecular Communications over the Poisson Channel

Various applications of molecular communications (MC) are event-triggered, and, as a consequence, the prevalent Shannon capacity may not be the right measure for performance assessment. Thus, in this paper, we motivate and establish the identification capacity as an alternative metric. In particular, we study deterministic identification (DI) for the discrete-time Poisson channel (DTPC), subject to an average and a peak power constraint, which serves as a model for MC systems employing molecule counting receivers. It is established that the codebook size for this channel scales as $2^{(n\log n)R}$, where $n$ and $R$ are the codeword length and coding rate, respectively. Lower and upper bounds on the DI capacity of the DTPC are developed. The obtained large capacity of the DI channel sheds light on the performance of natural DI systems such as natural olfaction, which are known for their extremely large chemical discriminatory power in biology. Furthermore, numerical simulations for the empirical miss-identification and false identification error rates are provided for finite length codes. This allows us to quantify the scale of error reduction in terms of the codeword length.
