Controlled Quantum Metrology with Anisotropic Heisenberg Spin Interactions under Intrinsic Decoherence

We theoretically investigate quantum parameter estimation in a two-qubit anisotropic Heisenberg spin system with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction in the presence of intrinsic decoherence described by the Milburn model. Using the Quantum Fisher Information (QFI), we study the estimation of both the uniform magnetic field and the DM interaction strength. Analytical expressions for the time-evolved density matrix are obtained and used to explore the effects of exchange anisotropy, intrinsic decoherence, and probe-state preparation on the achievable estimation precision. Our results show that suitable tuning of the anisotropic exchange coupling and the initial entangled state can considerably enhance the estimation performance, with different optimal parameter regimes emerging for magnetic-field and DM-interaction sensing. To better understand the role of quantum resources in metrology, we also examine the behaviour of concurrence, quantum coherence, and von Neumann entropy. Overall, our findings demonstrate that anisotropic Heisenberg spin systems with DM interaction provide a promising and flexible platform for high-precision quantum metrology even in the presence of intrinsic decoherence.

Nonreciprocal photon blockade in a spinning microwave magnomechanical system through kerr-magnon and optical parametric amplifier

Unconventional quantum antibunching, arising from quantum interference effects, represents a notable form of quantum correlation that has attracted significant attention for its ability to generate high-quality single-quantum sources. In this work, we propose a scheme to achieve and actively control strong photon blockade in a spinning microwave magnomechanical system by leveraging the combined nonlinear effects of Kerr-induced magnon interactions and an optical parametric amplifier. By exploiting the Sagnac-Fizeau shift, we establish nonreciprocal photon blockade and verify this effect through a combination of analytical modelling and numerical simulations. To gain intuitive insight into the underlying nonreciprocity, we approximate the equal-time second-order correlation function using the analytical solution of the Schr\"odinger equation. This analytical result is then compared with the full numerical solution derived from the Lindblad master equation. The influences of thermal noise, the probe field amplitude, and the magnetic-dipole coupling strength are investigated within the constraints of the weak-coupling regime. The system's nonclassicality is characterized using the Mandel parameter, complemented by an analysis of the time evolution of the second-order correlation function. Our work provides a pathway for realizing nonreciprocal photon blockade in a nonlinear spinning microwave magnomechanical system.

Enhanced weak force sensing through atom-based coherent noise cancellation in a hybrid cavity optomechanical system

We investigate weak force-sensing based on coherent quantum noise cancellation in a nonlinear hybrid optomechanical system. The optomechanical cavity contains a moveable mechanical mirror, a fixed semitransparent mirror, an ensemble of ultracold atoms, and an optical parametric amplifier (OPA). Using the coherent quantum noise cancellation (CQNC) process, one can eliminate the back action noise at all frequencies. Also by tuning the OPA parameters, one can suppress the quantum shot-noise at lower frequencies than the resonant frequency. In the CQNC scheme, the damping rate of the mechanical oscillator matches the damping rate of the atomic ensemble, which is experimentally achievable even for a low-frequency mechanical oscillator with a high-quality factor. Elimination of the back action noise and suppression of the shot noise significantly enhance force sensing and thus overcome the standard quantum limit of weak force sensing. This hybrid scheme can play an essential role in the realization of quantum optomechanical sensors and quantum control.

A continuous pathway between the elasto-inertial and elastic turbulent states in viscoelastic channel flow

We show that viscoelastic plane Poiseuille flow becomes linearly unstable in the absence of inertia, in the limit of high elasticities, for ultra-dilute polymer solutions. While inertialess elastic instabilities have been predicted for curvilinear shear flows, this is the first ever report of a purely elastic linear instability in a rectilinear shear flow. The novel instability continues upto a Reynolds number ($Re$) of $O(1000)$, corresponding to the recently identified elasto-inertial turbulent state believed to underlie the maximum-drag-reduced regime. Thus, for highly elastic ultra-dilute polymer solutions, a single linearly unstable modal branch may underlie transition to elastic turbulence at zero $Re$, and to elasto-inertial turbulence at moderate $Re$, implying the existence of continuous pathways connecting the turbulent states to each other, and to the laminar base state.

The center-mode instability of viscoelastic plane Poiseuille flow

A modal stability analysis shows that plane Poiseuille flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid becomes unstable to a `center mode' with phase speed close to the maximum base-flow velocity, $U_{max}$. The governing dimensionless groups are the Reynolds number $Re = ρU_{max} H/η$, the elasticity number $E = λη/(H^2ρ)$, and the ratio of solvent to solution viscosity $η_s/η$; here, $λ$ is the polymer relaxation time, $H$ is the channel half-width, and $ρ$ is the fluid density. For experimentally relevant values (e.g., $E \sim 0.1$ and $β\sim 0.9$), the predicted critical Reynolds number, $Re_c$, for the center-mode instability is around $200$, with the associated eigenmodes being spread out across the channel. In the asymptotic limit of $E(1 -β) \ll 1$, with $E$ fixed, corresponding to strongly elastic dilute polymer solutions, $Re_c \propto (E(1-β))^{-\frac{3}{2}}$ and the critical wavenumber $k_c \propto (E(1-β))^{-\frac{1}{2}}$. The unstable eigenmode in this limit is confined in a thin layer near the channel centerline. The above features are largely analogous to the center-mode instability in viscoelastic pipe flow (Garg et al., Phys. Rev. Lett., 121, 024502 (2018)), and suggest a universal linear mechanism underlying the onset of turbulence in both channel and pipe flows of suffciently elastic dilute polymer solutions.

Viscoelastic pipe flow is linearly unstable

Newtonian pipe flow is known to be linearly stable at all Reynolds numbers. We report, for the first time, a linear instability of pressure driven pipe flow of a viscoelastic fluid, obeying the Oldroyd-B constitutive equation commonly used to model dilute polymer solutions. The instability is shown to exist at Reynolds numbers significantly lower than those at which transition to turbulence is typically observed for Newtonian pipe flow. Our results qualitatively explain experimental observations of transition to turbulence in pipe flow of dilute polymer solutions at flow rates where Newtonian turbulence is absent. The instability discussed here should form the first stage in a hitherto unexplored dynamical pathway to turbulence in polymer solutions. An analogous instability exists for plane Poiseuille flow.
