Machine learning fully hadronic events with spectral functions

Characterising fully hadronic events is a difficult task at hadron colliders. Signal jets from the hard process are mingled with an arbitrary number of ISR and FSR jets, leading to a large combinatorial background. This also poses a challenge for machine-learning analyses, where the number of input features is fixed while the jet multiplicity fluctuates from event to event due to QCD radiation. In this work, we explore the use of the two-point correlation spectral function as an input feature for machine-learning analyses of such events. The spectral function maps the transverse-momentum data of an event into a one-dimensional function of the angular distance, encoding the event information modulo collider isometries and jet permutations, and is defined independently of the jet multiplicity. As a concrete benchmark we apply the method to discriminate gluino-pair production followed by $\tilde{g} \to t \bar{t} \tildeχ_1^0$ against the fully hadronic $t \bar{t}$ background. With $139~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of $\sqrt{s} = 13$ TeV $pp$ collision data, a dense neural network supplied with spectral-function features improves the expected reach in gluino-mass by roughly 150 GeV relative to a recent ATLAS analysis, and by roughly 250 GeV relative to the same network trained on jet kinematics alone.

Quantum properties of heavy-fermion pairs at a lepton collider with polarised beams

We investigate the quantum properties of heavy-fermion pairs, such as $t\bar t$ or $τ^+τ^-$, produced in lepton-lepton collisions with polarised beams. Focusing on spin correlations, entanglement, Bell-inequality violation, and quantum-information-theoretic measures such as purity and magic, we analyse how beam polarisation shapes the structure of the spin-density matrix. We derive analytic expressions for a wide range of helicity configurations, including both Standard Model contributions and generic new-physics effects parametrised by scalar, vector, and tensor four-fermion operators within an effective field theory framework. We show that beam polarisation unlocks a substantially richer set of spin configurations and significantly enhances sensitivity to non-standard interactions. As a phenomenological application, we study $t\bar t$ production at a future linear collider and demonstrate that quantum observables provide a comprehensive and complementary probe of top-quark interactions and stronger constraints on the scale of new physics.

Quantum Information meets High-Energy Physics: Input to the update of the European Strategy for Particle Physics

Some of the most astonishing and prominent properties of Quantum Mechanics, such as entanglement and Bell nonlocality, have only been studied extensively in dedicated low-energy laboratory setups. The feasibility of these studies in the high-energy regime explored by particle colliders was only recently shown and has gathered the attention of the scientific community. For the range of particles and fundamental interactions involved, particle colliders provide a novel environment where quantum information theory can be probed, with energies exceeding by about 12 orders of magnitude those employed in dedicated laboratory setups. Furthermore, collider detectors have inherent advantages in performing certain quantum information measurements, and allow for the reconstruction of the state of the system under consideration via quantum state tomography. Here, we elaborate on the potential, challenges, and goals of this innovative and rapidly evolving line of research and discuss its expected impact on both quantum information theory and high-energy physics.

SModelS v3: Going Beyond Z2 Topologies

SModelS is a public tool for fast reinterpretation of LHC searches for new physics based on a large database of simplified model results. While previous versions were limited to models with a Z2-type symmetry, such as R-parity conserving supersymmetry, version 3 can now handle arbitrary signal topologies. To this end, the tool was fully restructured and now relies on a graph-based description of simplified model topologies. In this work, we present the main conceptual changes and novel features of SModelS v3, together with the inclusion of new experimental searches for resonant production of spin-1 and spin-0 mediators with decays to quarks or to dark matter. Applying these results to a model containing two mediators, we discuss the interplay of resonance and missing energy searches, and the model's coverage by the currently available simplified model results.

Global LHC constraints on electroweak-inos with SModelS v2.3

Electroweak-inos, superpartners of the electroweak gauge and Higgs bosons, play a special role in supersymmetric theories. Their intricate mixing into chargino and neutralino mass eigenstates leads to a rich phenomenology, which makes it difficult to derive generic limits from LHC data. In this paper, we present a global analysis of LHC constraints for promptly decaying electroweak-inos in the context of the minimal supersymmetric standard model, exploiting the SModelS software package. Combining up to 16 ATLAS and CMS searches for which electroweak-ino efficiency maps are available in SModelS, we study which combinations maximise the sensitivity in different regions of the parameter space, how fluctuations in the data in individual analyses influence the global likelihood, and what is the resulting exclusion power of the combination compared to the analysis-by-analysis approach.

SModelS v2.3: enabling global likelihood analyses

We present version 2.3 of SModelS, a public tool for the fast reinterpretation of LHC searches for new physics on the basis of simplified-model results. The main new features are a database update with the latest available experimental results for full Run 2 luminosity, comprising in particular a large variety of electroweak-ino searches, and the ability to combine likelihoods from different analyses. This enables statistically more rigorous constraints and opens the way for global likelihood analyses for LHC searches. The physics impact is demonstrated for the electroweak-ino sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model.

Quantum information and CP measurement in $H \to τ^+ τ^-$ at future lepton colliders

We introduce a methodology and investigate the feasibility of measuring quantum properties of tau lepton pairs in the $H \to τ^+ τ^-$ decay at future lepton colliders. In particular, observation of entanglement, steerability and violation of Bell inequalities are examined for the ILC and FCC-ee. We find that detecting quantum correlation crucially relies on precise reconstruction of the tau lepton rest frame and a simple kinematics reconstruction does not suffice due to the finite energy resolution of the colliding beams and detectors. To correct for energy mismeasurements, a log-likelihood method is developed that incorporates the information of impact parameters of tau lepton decays. We demonstrate that an accurate measurement of quantum properties is possible with this method. As a by-product, we show that a novel model-independent test of CP violation can be performed and the CP-phase of $H ττ$ interaction can be constrained with an accuracy comparable to dedicated analyses, i.e., up to $7.9^{\circ}$ and $5.4^{\circ}$ at ILC and FCC-ee, respectively.

Combined constraints on dark photons and discovery prospects at the LHC and the Forward Physics Facility

Hidden sectors are ubiquitous in supergravity theories, in strings and in branes. Well motivated models such as the Stueckelberg hidden sector model could provide a candidate for dark matter. In such models, the hidden sector communicates with the visible sector via the exchange of a dark photon (dark $Z'$) while dark matter is constituted of Dirac fermions in the hidden sector. Using data from collider searches and precision measurements of SM processes as well as the most recent limits from dark matter direct and indirect detection experiments, we perform a comprehensive scan over a wide range of the $Z'$ mass and set exclusion bounds on the parameter space from sub-GeV to several TeV. We then discuss the discovery potential of an $\mathcal{O}$(TeV) scale $Z'$ at HL-LHC and the ability of future forward detectors to probe very weakly interacting sub-GeV $Z'$ bosons. Our analysis shows that the parameter space in which a $Z'$ can decay to hidden sector dark matter is severely constrained whereas limits become much weaker for a $Z'$ with no dark decays. The analysis also favors a self-thermalized dark sector which is necessary to satisfy the dark matter relic density.

Discovery prospects for long-lived multiply charged particles at the LHC

In this work, we aim to provide a comprehensive and largely model independent investigation on prospects to detect long-lived multiply charged particles at the LHC. We consider particles with spin 0 and $\frac{1}{2}$, with electric charges in range $1 \le |Q/e| \le 8$, which are singlet or triplet under $SU(3)_C$. Such particles might be produced as particle-antiparticle pairs and propagate through detectors, or form a positronium(quarkonium)-like bound state. We consider both possibilities and estimate lower mass bounds on new particles, that can be provided by ATLAS, CMS and MoEDAL experiments at the end of Run 3 and HL-LHC data taking periods. We find out that the sensitivities of ATLAS and CMS are generally stronger than those of MoEDAL at Run 3, while they may be competitive at HL-LHC for $3 \lesssim |Q/e| \lesssim 7$ for all types of long-lived particles we consider.

Constraining models with extra heavy gauge bosons using LHC measurements

We discuss significant improvements to our calculation of electroweak (EW) $t\bar{t}$ hadroproduction in extensions of the Standard Model (SM) with extra heavy neutral and charged spin-1 resonances using the Recola2 package. We allow for flavour-non-diagonal $Z'$ couplings and take into account non-resonant production in the SM and beyond including the contributions with t-channel $W$- and $W'$-bosons. We include next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections and consistently match to parton showers with the POWHEG method fully taking into account the interference effects between SM and new physics amplitudes. We briefly describe the Contour method and give some information about the Rivet repository which catalogues particle-level measurements subsequently used by Contur to set limits on beyond the SM (BSM) theories. We explain how we use our calculation within Contour in order to set limits on models with additional heavy gauge bosons using LHC measurements, and illustrate this with an example using the leptophobic Topcolour (TC) model.

Electroweak $t \bar t$ hadroproduction in the presence of heavy $Z'$ and $W'$ bosons at NLO QCD in POWHEG

We extend and improve upon our previous calculation of electroweak top-quark pair hadroproduction in extensions of the Standard Model with extra heavy neutral and charged spin-1 resonances. In particular, we allow for flavour-non-diagonal $Z'$ couplings and take into account non-resonant production in the SM and beyond including the contributions with $t$-channel $W$ and $W'$ bosons. All amplitudes are generated using the Recola2 package. As in our previous work, we include NLO QCD corrections and consistently match to parton showers with the POWHEG method fully taking into account the interference effects between SM and new physics amplitudes. We consider the Sequential Standard Model, the Topcolour model, as well as the Third Family Hypercharge Model featuring non-flavour-diagonal $Z'$ couplings which has been proposed recently to explain the anomalies in $B$ decays. We present numerical results for $t \bar t$ cross sections at hadron colliders with a centre-of-mass energy up to 100 TeV.
