T-duality of anomalous Chern-Simons couplings

It is known that the anomalous D$_p$-brane Chern-Simons couplings are not consistent with the standard rules of T-duality. Using compatibility of these couplings with the linear T-duality transformations, the B-field gauge transformations and with the general coordinate transformations as guiding principles we find new couplings at order $O(α'^2)$ for ${\cal C}^{(p-3)}$, ${\cal C}^{(p-1)}$, ${\cal C}^{(p+1)}$ and ${\cal C}^{(p+3)}$.

Towards extending the Chern-Simons couplings at order $O(α'^2)$

Using the compatibility of the anomalous Chern-Simons couplings on D$_p$-branes with the linear T-duality and with the antisymmetric B-field gauge transformations, some couplings have been recently found for $C^{(p-3)}$ at order $O(α'^2)$. We examine these couplings with the S-matrix element of one RR and two antisymmetric B-field vertex operators. We find that the S-matrix element reproduces these couplings as well as some other couplings. Each of them is invariant under the linear T-duality and the B-field gauge transformations.

On RR couplings on D-branes at order $O(α'^2)$

Recently, it has been found that there are couplings of the RR field strength $F^{(p)}$ and the B-field strength $H$ on the world volume of D$_p$-branes at order ${\cal O}(α'^2)$. These couplings which have both world-volume and transverse indices, are invariant under the linear T-duality transformations. Consistency with the nonlinear T-duality indicates that the RR field strength $F^{(p)}$ in these couplings should be replaced by ${\cal F}^{(p)}=d{\cal C}^{(p-1)}$ where ${\cal C}=e^{B}C$. This replacement, however, reproduces some non-gauge invariant terms. On the other hand, the nonlinear terms are invariant under the linear T-duality transformations at the level of two B-fields. This allows one to remove some of the nonlinear terms in ${\cal F}^{(p)}$. We fix this by comparing the nonlinear couplings with the S-matrix element of one RR and two NSNS vertex operators. Our results indicate that in the expansion of ${\cal F}^{(p)}$ one should keep only the B-field gauge invariant terms, e.g. $B\wedge dC^{(p-3)}$ where both indices of B-field lie along the brane. Moreover, in this case one should replace $B$ with $B+2πα'f$ to have the $B$-field gauge invariance.

Disk level S-matrix elements at eikonal Regge limit

We examine the calculation of the color-ordered disk level S-matrix element of massless scalar vertex operators for the special case that some of the Mandelstam variables for which there are no open string channel in the amplitude, are set to zero. By explicit calculation we show that the string form factors in the 2n-point functions reduce to one at the eikonal Regge limit.

The RN/CFT Correspondence

Recently it has been shown in 0901.0931 [hep-th] that the approach to extremality for the non-extremal Reissner-Nordstrom black hole is not continuous. The non-extremal RN black hole splits into two spacetimes at the extremality: an extremal black hole and a disconnected $AdS_2\times S^2$ space which has been called the "compactification solution". As a possible resolution for understanding the entropy of extremal RN black hole, it has been speculated that the entropy of the non-extremal black hole may be carried by the latter solution. By uplifting the four dimensional "compactification solution" with electric charge $Q_e$ to a five dimensional solution, we show that this solution is dual to a CFT with central charge $c=6Q_e^3$. The Cardy formula then shows that the microscopic entropy of the CFT is the same as the macroscopic entropy of the "compactification solution".

Ramond-Ramond field strength couplings on D-branes

By examining in details the disk level S-matrix element of one massless RR and one NSNS states at order O(α'^2), we find the coupling of one RR and one NSNS fields on the world volume of a D$_p$-brane. The non-zero couplings involve the first derivative of the RR field strengths F^{(p)}, F^{(p+2)} and F^{(p+4)}. We then fix the on-shell ambiguity of the couplings by requiring consistency with the linear T-duality transformations. Moreover, consistency with the non-linear T-duality requires that the RR field strength in the above couplings to be {\cal F}=d{\cal C} where {\cal C}=e^{B}C.

A proposal for M2-brane-anti-M2-brane action

We propose a manifestly SO(8) invariant BF type Lagrangian for describing the dynamics of M2-brane-anti-M2-brane system in flat spacetime. When one of the scalars which satisfies a free-scalar equation takes a large expectation value, the M2-brane-anti-M2-brane action reduces to the tachyon DBI action of D2-brane-anti-D2-brane system in flat spacetime.

On modified tachyon DBI action

Recently a modification of the tachyon DBI action has been proposed in which the tachyon carries the internal CP matrix σ_1 and σ_2. In this paper, we find the momentum expansion of the disk level S-matrix element of four tachyons and one gauge field in superstring theory and show that the first and second order terms of the expansion are in perfect agreement with the above tachyon DBI action.

More on WZ action of non-BPS branes

We calculate the disk level S-matrix element of one Ramond-Ramond, two gauge fields and one tachyon vertex operators in the world volume of non-BPS branes. We then find the momentum expansion of this amplitude and show that the infinite tachyon/massless poles and the contact terms of this amplitude can be reproduced by the tachyon DBI and the WZ actions, and by their higher derivative corrections.

More on entropy function formalism for non-extremal branes

We find R^4 correction to the non-extremal D1D5P solution of the supergravity by exactly solving the differential equations of motion and by using the entropy function formalism. In both cases, we find the same correction to the supergravity solution. We then calculate the correction to the entropy using the free energy method and the entropy function formalism. The results are the same.

Hydrodynamics of N=6 Superconformal Chern-Simons Theories at Strong Coupling

Using the duality conjecture between N=6 supersymmetric U(N)_k \times U(N)_{-k} Chern-Simons theory and M-theory on AdS_4 \times S^7/Z_{k}, we calculate the corrections to the shear viscosity of the field theory at temperature T. At strong 't Hooft coupling and at small k level, we have considered one-loop correction to the M-theory effective action. At large k level, we have considered the alpha' correction to the type IIA effective action. In both cases the correction to the ratio of shear viscosity to the entropy density is positive.

On effective actions of non-BPS branes and their higher derivative corrections

By calculating various disk level S-matrix elements and studying in details their momentum expansions, we have extracted some of the couplings in tachyon DBI action and Wess-Zumino terms of the non-BPS branes, and their higher derivative corrections. In particular, we have found that there is exact consistency between field theory and string theory tachyon pole of S-matrix element of one RR and three tachyons provided that one takes into account the fact that the tachyon vertex operator in 0 picture to be along the Pauli matrix $σ_1$ whereas the tachyon in -1 picture to be along the $σ_2$ direction. This internal CP factors should be included in the tachyon DBI part of the effective action.

Tachyon Couplings to Fermion

By fixing the internal CP factor of tachyon and massless Ramond vertex operators in different pictures, we have shown that the internal CP factor of the disk level S-matrix elements of two fermions and odd number of tachyon vertex operators in the world volume of non-BPS D-branes/D-brane-anti-D-brane is zero. We have calculated the S-matrix element of two fermions and two tachyons which has non vanishing internal CP factor, and found the momentum expansion of this amplitude. In the abelian case, we have compared the two-fermion-two-tachyon coupling at low energy with the corresponding coupling in the gauge-fixed supersymmetric tachyon DBI action. The couplings in the two cases are exactly the same.

On non-linear action of multiple M2-branes

A nonlinear SO(8) invariant BF type Lagrangian for describing the dynamics of N M2-branes in flat spacetime has been proposed recently in the literature which is an extension of the non-abelian DBI action of N D2-branes. This action includes only terms with even number of the totally antisymmetric tensor M^{IJK}. We argue that the action should contain terms with odd number of M^{IJL} as well. We modify the action to include them.

On thermodynamics of N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theories at strong coupling

Recently it has been conjectured that N=6, U(N)_{k} \times U(N)_{-k} Chern-Simons theory is dual to M-theory on AdS_4\times S^7/Z_{k}. By studying one-loop correction to the M-theory effective action, we calculate the correction to the entropy of thermal field theory at strong coupling. For large k level, we have also found the alpha' correction to the entropy from the string correction of the type IIA effective action. The structure of these two corrections at strong t'Hooft coupling are different.

On higher derivative corrections of tachyon action

We have examined the momentum expansion of the disk level S-matrix element of two tachyons and two gauge fields to find, up to on-shell ambiguity, the couplings of these fields in the world volume theory of N coincident non-BPS D-branes to all order of $α'$. Using the proposal that the action of D-brane-anti-D-brane is given by the projection of the action of two non-BPS D-branes with $(-1)^{F_L}$, we find the corresponding couplings in the world volume theory of the brane-anti-brane system. Using these infinite tower of couplings, we then calculate the massless pole of the scattering amplitude of one RR field, two tachyons and one gauge field in the brane-anti-brane theory. We find that the massless pole of the field theory amplitude is exactly equal to the massless pole of the disk level S-matrix element of one RR, two tachyons and one gauge field to all order of $α'$.

On the effective action of D-brane-anti-D-brane system

We examine the proposal for constructing the effective action of a D-brane-anti-D-brane system from the non-abelian extension of tachyon DBI action. We consider two prescriptions for the trace in the non-abelian tachyon DBI action. The usual trace and the symmetric trace prescription. The former gives an action for the D\bar{D} system which reduces to the action proposed by A.Sen for coincident branes. The latter gives a different action which is consistent with the S-matrix element calculations.
