Joint Time-Frequency Splitting for Multiuser SWIPT OFDM Networks

In this paper, we propose a joint time-frequency splitting (TFS) strategy for a multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system with simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT). In TFS, the time sharing factors for each user on different subcarriers are optimized via maximizing the sum rate of users with both information and energy quality of service (QoS) constraints. Though the original problem is nonconvex, we first transform it into an equivalent convex problem through an appropriate variable transformation. Then, we present an iterative algorithm based on semi closed form with low complexity. Numerical results show that the proposed TFS outperforms the conventional time-sharing and subcarrier-separation strategies.

Energy-Efficient Data Collection and Wireless Power Transfer Using A MIMO Full-Duplex UAV

In this paper, we propose a novel energy-efficient data collection and wireless power transfer (WPT) framework for internet of things (IoT) applications, via a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) full-duplex (FD) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). To exploit the benefits of UAV-enabled WPT and MIMO FD communications, we allow the MIMO FD UAV charge low-power IoT devices while at the same time collect data from them. With the aim of saving the total energy consumed at the UAV, we formulate an energy minimization problem by taking the FD hardware impairments, the number of uploaded data bits, and the energy harvesting causality into account. Due to the non-convexity of the problem in terms of UAV trajectory and transmit beamforming for WPT, tracking the global optimality is quite challenge. Alternatively, we find a local optimal point by implementing the proposed iterative search algorithm combining with successive convex approximation techniques. Numerical results show that the proposed approach can lead to superior performance compared with other benchmark schemes with low computational complexity and fast convergence.

Transmission Capacity of Full-Duplex MIMO Ad-Hoc Network with Limited Self-Interference Cancellation

In this paper, we propose a joint transceiver beamforming design to simultaneously mitigate self-interference (SI) and partial inter-node interference for full-duplex multiple-input and multiple-output ad-hoc network, and then derive the transmission capacity upper bound (TC-UB) for the corresponding network. Condition on a specified transceiver antenna's configuration, we allow the SI effect to be cancelled at transmitter side, and offer an additional degree-of-freedom at receiver side for more inter-node interference cancellation. In addition, due to the proposed beamforming design and imperfect SI channel estimation, the conventional method to obtain the TC-UB is not applicable. This motivates us to exploit the dominating interferer region plus Newton-Raphson method to iteratively formulate the TC-UB. The results show that the derived TC-UB is quite close to the actual one especially when the number of receive-antenna is small. Moreover, our proposed beamforming design outperforms the existing beamforming strategies, and FD mode works better than HD mode in low signal-to-noise ratio region.

Resource Allocation in Full-Duplex Mobile-Edge Computing Systems with NOMA and Energy Harvesting

This paper considers a full-duplex (FD) mobile-edge computing (MEC) system with non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and energy harvesting (EH), where one group of users simultaneously offload task data to the base station (BS) via NOMA and the BS simultaneously receive data and broadcast energy to other group of users with FD. We aim at minimizing the total energy consumption of the system via power control, time scheduling and computation capacity allocation. To solve this nonconvex problem, we first transform it into an equivalent problem with less variables. The equivalent problem is shown to be convex in each vector with the other two vectors fixed, which allows us to design an iterative algorithm with low complexity. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance than the conventional methods.

Joint Altitude, Beamwidth, Location and Bandwidth Optimization for UAV-Enabled Communications

This letter investigates an uplink power control problem for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) assisted wireless communications. We jointly optimize the UAV's flying altitude, antenna beamwidth, UAV's location and ground terminals' allocated bandwidth and transmit power to minimize the sum uplink power subject to the minimal rate demand. An iterative algorithm is proposed with low complexity to obtain a suboptimal solution. Numerical results show that the proposed algorithm can achieve good performance in terms of uplink sum power saving.

Symbol-Level Selective Full-Duplex Relaying with Power and Location Optimization

In this paper, a symbol-level selective transmission for full-duplex (FD) relaying networks is proposed to mitigate error propagation effects and improve system spectral efficiency. The idea is to allow the FD relay node to predict the correctly decoded symbols of each frame, based on the generalized square deviation method, and discard the erroneously decoded symbols, resulting in fewer errors being forwarded to the destination node. Using the capability for simultaneous transmission and reception at the FD relay node, our proposed strategy can improve the transmission efficiency without extra cost of signalling overhead. In addition, targeting on the derived expression for outage probability, we compare it with half-duplex (HD) relaying case, and provide the transmission power and relay location optimization strategy to further enhance system performance. The results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the classic relaying protocols, such as cyclic redundancy check based selective decode-and-forward (S-DF) relaying and threshold based S-DF relaying in terms of outage probability and bit-error-rate. Moreover, the performances with optimal power allocation is better than that with equal power allocation, especially when the FD relay node encounters strong self-interference and/or it is close to the destination node.

Wireless Network Coding in Network MIMO: A New Design for 5G and Beyond

Physical layer network coding (PNC) has been studied to serve wireless network MIMO systems with much lower backhaul load than approaches such as Cloud Radio Access Network (Cloud-RAN) and coordinated multipoint (CoMP). In this paper, we present a design guideline of engineering applicable PNC to fulfil the request of high user densities in 5G wireless RAN infrastructure. Unlike compute-and-forward and PNC design criteria for two-way relay channels, the proposed guideline is designed for uplink of network MIMO (N-MIMO) systems. We show that the proposed design criteria guarantee that 1) the whole system operates over binary system; 2) the PNC functions utilised at each access point overcome all singular fade states; 3) the destination can unambiguously recover all source messages while the overall backhaul load remains at the lowest level. We then develop a two-stage search algorithm to identify the optimum PNC mapping functions which greatly reduces the real-time computational complexity. The impact of estimated channel information and reduced number of singular fade states in different QAM modulation schemes is studied in this paper. In addition, a sub-optimal search method based on lookup table mechanism to achieve further reduced computational complexity with limited performance loss is presented. Numerical results show that the proposed schemes achieve low outage probability with reduced backhaul load.

An Adaptive Optimal Mapping Selection Algorithm for PNC using Variable QAM Modulation

Fifth generation (5G) wireless networks will need to serve much higher user densities than existing 4G networks, and will therefore require an enhanced radio access network (RAN) infrastructure. Physical layer network coding (PNC) has been shown to enable such high densities with much lower backhaul load than approaches such as Cloud-RAN and coordinated multipoint (CoMP). In this letter, we present an engineering applicable PNC scheme which allows different cooperating users to use different modulation schemes, according to the relative strength of their channels to a given access point. This is in contrast with compute-and-forward and previous PNC schemes which are designed for two-way relay channel. A two-stage search algorithm to identify the optimum PNC mappings for given channel state information and modulation is proposed in this letter. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme achieves low bit error rate with reduced backhaul load.

A Physical Layer Network Coding Design for 5G Network MIMO

This paper presents a physical layer network coding (PNC) approach for network MIMO (N-MIMO) systems to release the heavy burden of backhaul load. The proposed PNC approach is applied for uplink scenario in binary systems, and the design guideline serves multiple mobile terminals (MTs) and guarantees unambiguous recovery of the message from each MT. We present a novel PNC design criterion first based on binary matrix theories, followed by an adaptive optimal mapping selection algorithm based on the proposed design criterion. In order to reduce the real-time computational complexity, a two-stage search algorithm for the optimal binary PNC mapping matrix is developed. Numerical results show that the proposed scheme achieves lower outage probability with reduced backhaul load compared to practical CoMP schemes which quantize the estimated symbols from a log-likelihood ratio (LLR) based multiuser detector into binary bits at each access point (AP).

Cross-layer Design in Cognitive Radio Standards

The growing demand for wireless applications and services on the one hand, and limited available radio spectrum on the other hand have made cognitive radio (CR) a promising solution for future mobile networks. It has attracted considerable attention by academia and industry since its introduction in 1999 and several relevant standards have been developed within the last decade. Cognitive radio is based on four main functions, spanning across more than one layer of OSI model. Therefore, solutions based on cognitive radio technology require cross layer (CL) designs for optimum performance. This article briefly reviews the basics of cognitive radio technology as an introduction and highlights the need for cross layer design in systems deploying CR technology. Then some of the published standards with CL characteristics are outlined in a later section, and in the final section some research examples of cross layer design ideas based on the existing CR standards conclude this article.

Square Deviation Based Symbol-Level Selection for Virtual Full-Duplex Relaying Networks

In this paper, a symbol-level selective transmission for virtual full-duplex (FD) relaying networks is proposed, which aims to mitigate error propagation effects and improve system spectral efficiency. The idea is to allow two half-duplex relays, mimicked as FD relaying, to alternatively serve as transmitter and receiver to forward the source's messages. In this case, each relay predicts the correctly decoded symbols of its received frame, based on the generalized square deviation method, and discard the erroneously decoded symbols, resulting in fewer errors being forwarded to the destination. Then, a modified maximum \textit{a posteriori} receiver at the destination is provided to eliminate the inter-frame interference and identify the positions of discarded symbols from the relays. In addition, the diversity-multiplexing trade-off (DMT) for our proposed scheme is also analysed. It is found that our proposed scheme outperforms the conventional selective decode-and-forward (S-DF) relaying schemes, such as cyclic redundancy check based S-DF and threshold based S-DF, in terms of DMT. Moreover, the bit-error-rate performance are also simulated to confirm the DMT results.

Multi-Antenna Assisted Virtual Full-Duplex Relaying with Reliability-Aware Iterative Decoding

In this paper, a multi-antenna assisted virtual full-duplex (FD) relaying with reliability-aware iterative decoding at destination node is proposed to improve system spectral efficiency and reliability. This scheme enables two half-duplex relay nodes, mimicked as FD relaying, to alternatively serve as transmitter and receiver to relay their decoded data signals regardless the decoding errors, meanwhile, cancel the inter-relay interference with QR-decomposition. Then, by deploying the reliability-aware iterative detection/decoding process, destination node can efficiently mitigate inter-frame interference and error propagation effect at the same time. Simulation results show that, without extra cost of time delay and signalling overhead, our proposed scheme outperforms the conventional selective decode-and-forward (S-DF) relaying schemes, such as cyclic redundancy check based S-DF relaying and threshold based S-DF relaying, by up to 8 dB in terms of bit-error-rate.

Performance Analysis of Energy Consumption in Cache-Enabled Multicast D2D Communications

Device-to-Device (D2D) communication as a promising technology in 5G cellular networks provides the communication of the users in the vicinity and thereby decreases end-to-end delay and power consumption. In addition to the aforementioned advantages, it also supports the high-speed data transmission services such as content delivery. In this paper, we consider the D2D multicast communications opportunity in the D2D-cellular hybrid network, in which that one transmitter targets multiple receivers at the same time. We provide the analysis for the proposed system by using tools from stochastic geometry, to calculate the cache hitting probability of the receivers as well as the energy consumption of the hybrid network aiming to seek the optimal number of caching contents in the D2D multicast opportunities.

Performance Analysis of Inband FD-D2D Communications with Imperfect SI Cancellation for Wireless Video Distribution

Tremendous growing demand for high data rate services is the main driver for increasing traffic in wireless cellular networks. Device-to-Device (D2D) communications have recently been proposed to offload data via direct communications by bypassing cellular base stations (BSs). Such an offloading schemes increase capacity and reduce end-to-end delay in cellular networks and help to serve the dramatically increasing demand for high data rate. In this paper, we aim to analyze inband fullduplex (FD) D2D performance for the wireless video distribution by considering imperfect self-interference (SI) cancellation. Using tools from stochastic geometry, we analyze outage probability and spectral efficiency. Analytic and simulation results are used to demonstrate achievable gain against its half-duplex (HD) counterpart.

Full-Duplex Device-to-Device Collaboration for Low-Latency Wireless Video Distribution

Growing demand for video services is the main driver for increasing traffic in wireless cellular data networks. Wireless video distribution schemes have recently been proposed to offload data via Device-to-Device (D2D) communications. These offloading schemes increase capacity and reduce end-to-end delay in cellular networks and help to serve the dramatically increasing demand for high quality video. In this paper, we propose a new scheme for video distribution over cellular networks by exploiting full-duplex (FD) D2D communication in two scenarios; scenario one: two nodes exchange their desired video files simultaneously with each other, and scenario two: each node can concurrently transmit to and receive from two different nodes. In the latter case, an intermediate transceiver can serve one or multiple users' file requests whilst capturing its desired file from another device in the vicinity. Analytic and simulation results are used to compare the proposed scheme with its half-duplex (HD) counterpart under the same transmitter establishment criteria to show the achievable gain of FD-D2D scheme in video content delivery, in terms of sum throughput and latency.
