Resilient Output Containment under Undisclosed Leader Dynamics and Actuator Attacks

This work studies resilient output containment for heterogeneous linear multi-agent systems with actuator cyber-attacks over directed network topologies. The leaders generate bounded locally absolutely continuous trajectories; however, their dynamics, velocity bounds, and motion envelopes are undisclosed to the followers. The cyber-attack model includes state- and input-correlated, as well as bounded exogenous actuator false-data terms. A continuous two-layer adaptive control architecture is proposed. The first layer is a virtual-actuator reconfiguration layer that uses partial state measurements to compensate for actuator attacks in the local tracking-error dynamics. The second layer is a network interface that generates task-space commands via an adaptive interaction protocol. This protocol uses only neighbor-exchanged network-interface states whose dimensions match those of the plant output, and it does not require global graph knowledge for parameter tuning. For directed graphs, under a leader-rooted united spanning-tree condition, a nonsmooth Lyapunov analysis yields asymptotic containment at the command level. The physical outputs then converge to the leader convex hull up to a residual determined by the command-tracking local controllers. Simulation results using a network of quadrotors with damped suspended loads illustrate the performance of attack recovery and containment tracking.

A tunable feedback-controlled magnetic trap for a magnet in free fall

Ferromagnets in free space are predicted to exhibit pure Larmor precession at near-zero magnetic fields and provide exceptional sensitivity for magnetometry and gyroscopy. Notably, pure Larmor precession has not been observed in a macroscopic ferromagnetic particle, despite its fundamental importance and potential for probing relativistic effects and dark-matter interactions. Realizing such dynamics requires true free fall to eliminate clamping losses and trap-induced systematics. A central challenge is designing a tunable trap that is weak enough to permit near-free evolution yet robust enough to withstand the disturbances of launch and release. Here, we propose and demonstrate a novel master proportional-integral-differential magnetic trap (MPIDMT) combining a PID-controlled coil system with a master control coil system. Implemented in the third-generation drop tower - Einstein-Elevator, during the microgravity phase the system stably levitates a ferromagnetic particle against shock accelerations up to 1.5 g and resolves its motion in both a low-field (0.4 g) configuration and in pure free fall. These results represent a key step toward free-fall ferromagnetic magnetometry, the long-sought direct observation of macroscopic Larmor precession, and future space-based experiments.

Mechanical Evaluation Of Selective Laser Melted Ni-Rich Niti: Compression, Tension, And Torsion

Two unique behaviors of superelasticity and shape memory effect have made shape memory alloy such as NiTi, an interesting alloy for different applications. Recently, additive manufacturing (AM) as a powerful tool for fabricating NiTi has become of interest to make complex geometries. Selective laser melting (SLM) is an AM method that not only provides flexibility to make complex 3D shapes but also it can be possible to tailor the thermomechanical properties of the parts just by changing the process parameters. The non-homogeneous microstructure of as-fabricated parts as well as asymmetric mechanical behavior of NiTi, make it important to study the properties of SLM NiTi parts under different loading condition. In this study, Ni50.8Ti (at. %) powder was utilized to fabricate cube, dog-bone, and tube by SLM technique. The transformation temperatures (TTs) of samples were measured by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) method and the variation of TTs was discussed. Three coupons were tested mechanically under compression, tension, and torsion. In-situ digital image correlation (DIC) was employed to measure and monitor the strain field of samples during the mechanical tests. The strain distribution showed localized strain for all three samples. The equivalent stress/strain was calculated to compare the result of compressive, tensile, and torsional responses and the significant asymmetric behavior was shown and discussed.

High-Temperature Oxidation Kinetics of Additively Manufactured NiTiHf

NiTi-based high-temperature shape memory alloys (HTSMAs) such as NiTiHf have been utilized in a broad range of applications due to their high strength and work output, as well as, their ability to increase the transformation temperatures (TTs). Recently, additive manufacturing techniques (AM) have been widely used to fabricate complex shape memory alloy components without any major modifications or tooling and has paved the way to tailor the manufacturing and fabrications of microstructure and critical properties of their final parts. NiTi alloys properties such as transformation temperatures can be significantly altered due to oxidation, which can occur during the manufacturing process or post-processing. In this work, the oxidation behavior of Ni-rich NiTi20Hf shape memory alloys, which was fabricated by the selective laser melting (SLM) method, is evaluated. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) is used to assess the kinetic behavior of the oxidation at different temperature ranges of 500, 700, and 900 C for 20 hours in the air. After oxidation, to evaluate the microstructure and chemical composition X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) was conducted. The isothermal oxidation kinetics of conventional NiTi20Hf alloys were studied, and the results were compared to AM samples. Results show a two-stage oxidation rate at which oxidation increased with the high rate at the initial stage. As the oxidation time increased, the oxidation rate gradually decreased. The oxidation behavior of NiTiHf alloys initially obeyed logarithmic rate law and then followed by parabolic rate law. SEM results showed the formation of a multi-layered oxide scale, including TiO2, NiTiO3, and Hf oxide.
