Evaluating Grid Strength with Rising Penetration of Inverter Based Resources

Over the years, Dominion Energy Virginia (DEV) has experienced recurring power quality disturbances, including voltage and power oscillations, particularly in areas with significant inverter-based generation. While these phenomena suggest a potential relationship to system strength, no definitive correlation has yet been established. This paper presents methodologies for assessing system strength across the DEV network and identifying regions that may be vulnerable to such disturbances. To this end, three grid-strength metrics are evaluated: the Simple Short-Circuit Ratio (SSCR), the Weighted Short-Circuit Ratio (WSCR), and the Composite Short-Circuit Ratio (CSCR). Historical event data will be analyzed using steady-state snapshots from DEV's proprietary Analysis on Demand (ANODE) platform, which provides 10-minute interval load-flow data. These snapshots will be processed using a developed software tool to compute system strength metrics. The analysis will investigate potential correlations between system strength and observed disturbances. Where such correlations are identified, the study will further evaluate the impact of deploying synchronous condensers (SynCons) as a mitigation strategy.

A Voronoi Diagram-Based Approach for AC Optimal Power Flow

The primary goal of Optimal Power Flow (OPF) is to optimize the operation of a power system while meeting the demand and adhering to operational constraints. This paper presents a new approach for AC OPF. First, the approach constructs a Voronoi diagram by distributing multiple sample points representing potential solutions throughout the search space. Then, it recursively adds new sample points including a tentative optimal point from the continuous gradient-projection method, a point in the most sparsely populated region to ensure high fidelity, and the connecting point, until the stopping criterion is met. The proposed approach is illustrated in detail using the IEEE 9-bus system and then validated on the IEEE 39-bus and 118-bus systems to verify the quality of the obtained solution.

Optimal Distributed Voltage Control via Primal Dual Gradient Dynamics

The rapidly increasing penetration of inverter-based resources into a power transmission network requires more sophisticated voltage control strategies considering their inherent output variabilities. In addition, faults and load variations affect the voltage profile over the power network. This paper proposes a Primal Dual Gradient Dynamics based optimal distributed voltage control approach that optimizes outputs of distributed reactive power sources to maintain an acceptable voltage profile while preserving operational limits. Case studies of this new approach on IEEE test systems have verified its effectiveness.
