Towards Structuring an Arabic-English Machine-Readable Dictionary Using Parsing Expression Grammars

Dictionaries are rich sources of lexical information about words that is required for many applications of natural language processing and human language technology. However, publishers prepare printed dictionaries for human usage not for machine processing. This paper presented a method to structure partly a machine-readable version of the Arabic-English Al-Mawrid dictionary. The method converted the entries of Al-Mawrid from a stream of words and punctuation marks into hierarchical structures. The hierarchical structure expresses the components of each dictionary entry in explicit format. A dictionary entry is composed of subentries and each subentry consists of defining phrases, domain labels, cross-references, and translation equivalences. We designed the proposed method as cascaded steps where parsing is the main step. We implemented the parser using the parsing expression grammars formalism. In conclusion, although Arabic dictionaries do not have microstructure standardization, this study demonstrated that it is possible to structure them automatically or semi-automatically with plausible accuracy after inducing their microstructure.

Extracting Knowledge from an Arabic-English Machine-Readable Dictionary Using Information Extraction

Natural language processing (NLP) applications need large and rich amount of linguistic knowledge. Furthermore, electronic language sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedia, and corpora became available. So, automatic methods are emerged to extract lexical information from those sources to overcome the knowledge acquisition bottleneck. We presented a method to automatically extract lexical information from a machine-readable version of the Arabic-English Al-Mawrid dictionary. We used n-gram analysis and key-word-in-context (KWIC) analysis to discover lexical patterns that manifest morphologic, syntactic, or semantic information. Then, we used hand-crafted rule-based information extraction to extract that information. Furthermore, we used punctuation marks and some heuristics to extract a set of synonyms in a subentry. This study registered high precision for all types of information, high recall for synonyms, and low recall for the other information. The study also showed that the Al-Mawrid has significant amount of derivations (morphologic information) and synonyms, domain labels, and hyponym/hypernym relations (semantic information).

Automatic Part-of-Speech Tagging of Arabic-English Dictionary Senses through WordNet

This paper proposed an algorithm for part-of-speech (POS) tagging senses of a bilingual dictionary. The algorithm is applied on the Al-Mawrid Arabic-English dictionary. The tagging task is accomplished by transferring the POS tags of the English translation equivalences (TEs) to the dictionary senses after dis-ambiguities process. The English POS tags of senses are acquired from the Princeton WordNet. POS tagging of bilingual dictionary senses is prerequisite to link a bilingual dictionary to WordNet and/or standardizing that dictionary into WordNet-LMF format where the synset (set of synonyms), not word, is the basic brick. The registered accuracy is high though the cost is little. Building NLP/HLT tools needs linguistic experts, large investments, and long time. For statistical approach, we need large annotated corpora and for rule-based approach, we need large lexicon that contains rich linguistic and world knowledge. That motivates the appearance of what are called resource-light approaches to develop natural language processing (NLP) tools for poor-resource languages.

PKCAM: Previous Knowledge Channel Attention Module

Recently, attention mechanisms have been explored with ConvNets, both across the spatial and channel dimensions. However, from our knowledge, all the existing methods devote the attention modules to capture local interactions from a uni-scale. In this paper, we propose a Previous Knowledge Channel Attention Module(PKCAM), that captures channel-wise relations across different layers to model the global context. Our proposed module PKCAM is easily integrated into any feed-forward CNN architectures and trained in an end-to-end fashion with a negligible footprint due to its lightweight property. We validate our novel architecture through extensive experiments on image classification and object detection tasks with different backbones. Our experiments show consistent improvements in performances against their counterparts. Our code is published at https://github.com/eslambakr/EMCA.

3D Camouflaging Object using RGB-D Sensors

This paper proposes a new optical camouflage system that uses RGB-D cameras, for acquiring point cloud of background scene, and tracking observers eyes. This system enables a user to conceal an object located behind a display that surrounded by 3D objects. If we considered here the tracked point of observer s eyes is a light source, the system will work on estimating shadow shape of the display device that falls on the objects in background. The system uses the 3d observer s eyes and the locations of display corners to predict their shadow points which have nearest neighbors in the constructed point cloud of background scene.
