Steady-State Entanglement Generation via Casimir-Polder Interactions

We investigate the generation of steady-state entanglement between two atoms resulting from the fluctuation-mediated Casimir-Polder (CP) interactions near a surface. Starting with an initially separable state of the atoms, we analyze the atom-atom entanglement dynamics for atoms placed at distances in the range of $\sim25$ nm away from a planar medium, examining the effect of medium properties and geometrical configuration of the atomic dipoles. We show that perfectly conducting and superconducting surfaces yield an optimal steady-state concurrence value of approximately 0.5. Furthermore, although the generated entanglement decreases with medium losses for a metal surface, we identify an optimal distance from the metal surface that assists in entanglement generation by the surface. While fluctuation-mediated interactions are typically considered detrimental to the coherence of quantum systems at nanoscales, our results demonstrate a mechanism for leveraging such interactions for entanglement generation.

Enantiomer detection via Quantum Otto cycle

Enantiomers are chiral molecules that exist in right-handed and left-handed conformations. Optical techniques of enantiomers detection are widely employed to discriminate between left- and right-handed molecules. However, identical spectra of enantiomers make enantiomer detection a very challenging task. Here, we investigate the possibility of exploiting thermodynamic processes for enantiomer detection. In particular, we employ a quantum Otto cycle, in which a chiral molecule described by a three-level system with cyclic optical transitions is considered a working medium. Each energy transition of the three-level system is coupled with an external laser drive. We find that the left-handed molecule works as a heat engine, while the right-handed molecule works as a thermal accelerator where the overall phase of the drives is considered as the cycle's control parameter. In addition, both left- and right-handed molecules work as heat engines by considering laser drives' detuning as the control parameter. However, the molecules can still be distinguished because both cases' extracted work and efficiency are quantitatively very different. Accordingly, left and right-handed molecules can be distinguished by evaluating the work distribution in the Otto cycle.

Quantum signatures in quadratic optomechanical heat engine with an atom in a tapered trap

We investigate how quantum signatures can emerge in a single atom heat engine consisting of an atom confined in a tapered trap and subject to hot and cold thermal reservoirs. A similar system was realized experimentally in Ref.[1]. We model such a system using a quadratic optomechanical model and identify an effective Otto cycle in the system's dynamics. We compare the engine's performance in the quantum and classical regimes by evaluating the power dissipated. We find that lowering the temperature is insufficient to make the single atom engine of Ref.[1] a genuine quantum-enhanced heat engine. We show that it is necessary to make the trap more asymmetric and confined to ensure that quantum correlations cause an enhancement in the power output.

A Computational and Experimental Analysis of Higher Order Modes in a Strongly Focusing Optical Cavity

Optical cavities operating in the near-concentric regime are the fundamental tools to perform high precision experiments like cavity QED applications. A strong focusing regime unfortunately is prone to excite higher-order modes. Higher-order mode excitation is challenging to avoid for the realistic strong focusing cavities, and if these modes are closely spaced, overall cavity linewidth gets significantly broadened. In this study, a computational method alongside the experiment is provided for the optical mode decomposition into cavity eigenmodes with justified approximations. It is shown that it is possible to recreate the intensity and spectral profile of the cavity transmission, with the provided model. As a result, a more complete treatment of the realistic near-concentric cavities can be done.

Work and Heat Value of Bound Entanglement

Entanglement has recently been recognized as an energy resource which can outperform classical resources if decoherence is relatively low. Multi-atom entangled states can mutate irreversibly to so called bound entangled (BE) states under noise. Resource value of BE states in information applications has been under critical study and a few cases where they can be useful have been identified. We explore the energetic value of typical BE states. Maximal work extraction is determined in terms of ergotropy. Since the BE states are non-thermal, extracting heat from them is less obvious. We compare single and repeated interaction schemes to operationally define and harvest heat from BE states. BE and free entangled (FE) states are compared in terms of their ergotropy and maximal heat values. Distinct roles of distillability in work and heat values of FE and BE states are pointed out. Decoherence effects in dynamics of ergotropy and mutation of FE states into BE states are examined to clarify significance of the work value of BE states. Thermometry of distillability of entanglement using micromaser cavity is proposed.
