Ultra-Low-Power IoT Communications: A novel address decoding approach for wake-up receivers

Providing energy-efficient Internet of Things (IoT) connectivity has attracted significant attention in fifth-generation (5G) wireless networks and beyond. A potential solution for realizing a long-lasting network of IoT devices is to equip each IoT device with a wake-up receiver (WuR) to have always-accessible devices instead of always-on devices. WuRs typically comprise a radio frequency demodulator, sequence decoder, and digital address decoder and are provided with a unique authentication address in the network. Although the literature on efficient demodulators is mature, it lacks research on fast, low-power, and reliable address decoders. As this module continuously monitors the received ambient energy for potential paging of the device, its contribution to WuR's power consumption is crucial. Motivated by this need, a low-power, reliable address decoder is developed in this paper. We further investigate the integration of WuR in low-power uplink/downlink communications and, using system-level energy analysis; we characterize operation regions in which WuR can contribute significantly to energy saving. The device-level energy analysis confirms the superior performance of our decoder. The results show that the proposed decoder significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art with a power consumption of 60 nW, at cost of compromising a negligible increase in decoding delay.

Secure Precoding in MIMO-NOMA: A Deep Learning Approach

A novel signaling design for secure transmission over two-user multiple-input multiple-output non-orthogonal multiple access channel using deep neural networks (DNNs) is proposed. The goal of the DNN is to form the covariance matrix of users' signals such that the message of each user is transmitted reliably while being confidential from its counterpart. The proposed DNN linearly precodes each user's signal before superimposing them and achieves near-optimal performance with significantly lower run time. Simulation results show that the proposed models reach about 98% of the secrecy capacity rates. The spectral efficiency of the DNN precoder is much higher than that of existing analytical linear precoders--e.g., generalized singular value decomposition--and its on-the-fly complexity is several times less than the existing iterative methods.

The next wave of wireless technologies is proliferating in connecting things among themselves as well as to humans. In the era of the Internet of things (IoT), billions of sensors, machines, vehicles, drones, and robots will be connected, making the world around us smarter. The IoT will encompass devices that must wirelessly communicate a diverse set of data gathered from the environment for myriad new applications. The ultimate goal is to extract insights from this data and develop solutions that improve quality of life and generate new revenue. A Rotation-based Method for Precoding in Gaussian MIMOME Channels

The problem of maximizing secrecy rate of multiple-input multiple-output multiple-eavesdropper (MIMOME) channels with arbitrary numbers of antennas at each node is studied in this paper. First, the optimization problem corresponding to the secrecy capacity of the MIMOME channel is converted to an equivalent optimization based on Givens rotations and eigenvalue decomposition of the covariance matrix. In this new formulation, precoder is a rotation matrix which results in a positive semi-definite (PSD) covariance matrix by construction. This removes the PSD matrix constraint and makes the problem easier to tackle. Next, a Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno (BFGS)-based algorithm is developed to find the rotation and power allocation parameters. Further, the generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD)-based precoding is used to initialize this algorithm. The proposed rotation-BFGS method provides an efficient approach to find a near-optimal transmit strategy for the MIMOME channel and outperforms various state-of-the-art analytical and numerical methods. In particular, the rotation BFGS precoding achieves higher secrecy rates than the celebrated GSVD precoding, with a reasonably higher computational complexity. Extensive numerical results elaborate on the effectiveness of the rotation-BFGS precoding. The new framework developed in this paper can be applied to a variety of similar problems in the context of multi-antenna channels with and without secrecy.

Secure Transmission in MIMO-NOMA Networks

This letter focuses on the physical layer security over two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) networks. A linear precoding technique is designed to ensure the confidentiality of the message of each user from its counterpart. This technique first splits the base station power between the two users and, based on that, decomposes the secure MIMO-NOMA channel into two MIMO wiretap channels, and designs the transmit covariance matrix for each channel separately. The proposed method substantially enlarges the secrecy rate compared to existing linear precoding methods and strikes a balance between performance and computation cost. Simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Multi-Objective DNN-based Precoder for MIMO Communications

This paper introduces a unified deep neural network (DNN)-based precoder for two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) networks with five objectives: data transmission, energy harvesting, simultaneous wireless information and power transfer, physical layer (PHY) security, and multicasting. First, a rotation-based precoding is developed to solve the above problems independently. Rotation-based precoding is new precoding and power allocation that beats existing solutions in PHY security and multicasting and is reliable in different antenna settings. Next, a DNN-based precoder is designed to unify the solution for all objectives. The proposed DNN concurrently learns the solutions given by conventional methods, i.e., analytical or rotation-based solutions. A binary vector is designed as an input feature to distinguish the objectives. Numerical results demonstrate that, compared to the conventional solutions, the proposed DNN-based precoder reduces on-the-fly computational complexity more than an order of magnitude while reaching near-optimal performance (99.45\% of the averaged optimal solutions). The new precoder is also more robust to the variations of the numbers of antennas at the receivers.

Cognitive Radio Networks: An Information Theoretic Perspective

Information-theoretic limits of {\it cognitive radio} networks have been under exploration for more than a decade. Although such limits are unknown for many networks, including the simplest case with two pairs of transmitter-receiver, there are several cases for which the capacity limits are obtained either exactly or up to a constant gap. The goal of this chapter is to provide insights into the nature of transmission techniques associated with optimal communication when cognitive radio technology is used. %, with an emphasis on 5G networks. Outlining the state of the art in the information-theoretic analysis of different cognitive systems, we highlight the salient features/points of the capacity-achieving or capacity-approaching strategies that should be considered in wireless network design paradigms based on this technology. In particular, we emphasize the interaction of cognitive radio with emerging technologies for 5G networks.

Power Allocation in Cache-Aided NOMA Systems: Optimization and Deep Reinforcement Learning Approaches

This work exploits the advantages of two prominent techniques in future communication networks, namely caching and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Particularly, a system with Rayleigh fading channels and cache-enabled users is analyzed. It is shown that the caching-NOMA combination provides a new opportunity of cache hit which enhances the cache utility as well as the effectiveness of NOMA. Importantly, this comes without requiring users' collaboration, and thus, avoids many complicated issues such as users' privacy and security, selfishness, etc. In order to optimize users' quality of service and, concurrently, ensure the fairness among users, the probability that all users can decode the desired signals is maximized. In NOMA, a combination of multiple messages are sent to users, and the defined objective is approached by finding an appropriate power allocation for message signals. To address the power allocation problem, two novel methods are proposed. The first one is a divide-and-conquer-based method for which closed-form expressions for the optimal resource allocation policy are derived, making this method simple and flexible to the system context. The second one is based on the deep reinforcement learning method that allows all users to share the full bandwidth. Finally, simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed methods and to compare their performance.

Deep Learning based Precoding for the MIMO Gaussian Wiretap Channel

A novel precoding method based on supervised deep neural networks is introduced for the multiple-input multiple-output Gaussian wiretap channel. The proposed deep learning (DL)-based precoding learns the input covariance matrix through offline training over a large set of input channels and their corresponding covariance matrices for efficient, reliable, and secure transmission of information. Furthermore, by spending time in offline training, this method remarkably reduces the computation complexity in real-time applications. Compared to traditional precoding methods, the proposed DL-based precoding is significantly faster and reaches near-capacity secrecy rates. DL-based precoding is also more robust than transitional precoding approaches to the number of antennas at the eavesdropper. This new approach to precoding is promising in applications in which delay and complexity are critical.

Interplay Between NOMA and Other Emerging Technologies: A Survey

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has been widely recognized as a promising way to scale up the number of users, enhance the spectral efficiency, and improve the user fairness in wireless networks, by allowing more than one user to share one wireless resource. NOMA can be flexibly combined with many existing wireless technologies and emerging ones including multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), massive MIMO, millimeter wave communications, cognitive and cooperative communications, visible light communications, physical layer security, energy harvesting, wireless caching, and so on. Combination of NOMA with these technologies can further increase scalability, spectral efficiency, energy efficiency, and greenness of future communication networks. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of the interplay between NOMA and the above technologies. The emphasis is on how the above techniques can benefit from NOMA and vice versa. Moreover, challenges and future research directions are identified.

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access: Common Myths and Critical Questions

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has received tremendous attention for the design of radio access techniques for fifth generation (5G) wireless networks and beyond. The basic concept behind NOMA is to serve more than one user in the same resource block, e.g., a time slot, subcarrier, spreading code, or space. With this, NOMA promotes massive connectivity, lowers latency, improves user fairness and spectral efficiency, and increases reliability compared to orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques. While NOMA has gained significant attention from the communications community, it has also been subject to several widespread misunderstandings, such as $``\textit{NOMA is based on allocating higher power to users with worse channel conditions. As such, cell-edge users receive more power in NOMA and due to this biased power allocation toward cell-edge users inter-cell interference is more severe in NOMA compared to OMA. NOMA also compromises security for spectral efficiency.}''$ The above statements are actually false, and this paper aims at identifying such common myths about NOMA and clarifying why they are not true. We also pose critical questions that are important for the effective adoption of NOMA in 5G and beyond and identify promising research directions for NOMA, which will require intense investigation in the future.

Lens-based Millimeter Wave Reconfigurable Antenna NOMA

This paper proposes a new multiple access technique based on the millimeter wave lens-based reconfigurable antenna systems. In particular, to support a large number of groups of users with different angles of departures (AoDs), we integrate recently proposed reconfigurable antenna multiple access (RAMA) into non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). The proposed technique, named reconfigurable antenna NOMA (RA-NOMA), divides the users with respect to their AoDs and channel gains. Users with different AoDs and comparable channel gains are served via RAMA while users with the same AoDs but different channel gains are served via NOMA. This technique results in the independence of the number of radio frequency chains from the number of NOMA groups. Further, we derive the feasibility conditions and show that the power allocation for RA-NOMA is a convex problem. We then derive the maximum achievable sum-rate of RA-NOMA. Simulation results show that RA-NOMA outperforms conventional orthogonal multiple access (OMA) as well as the combination of RAMA with the OMA techniques.

Secure Relaying in Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access: Trusted and Untrusted Scenarios

A downlink single-input single-output non-orthogonal multiple access setting is considered, in which a base station (BS) is communicating with two legitimate users in two possible scenarios of unsecure environments: existence of an external eavesdropper and communicating through an untrusted relay. For the first scenario, a number of trusted cooperative half-duplex relays is employed to assist with the BS's transmission and secure its signals from the external eavesdropper. Various relaying schemes are proposed and analyzed for that matter: cooperative jamming, decode-and-forward, and amplify-and-forward. For each scheme, secure beamforming signals are devised at the relays to maximize the achievable secrecy rate regions. For the second scenario, with the untrusted relay, achievable secrecy rate regions are derived for two different relaying schemes: compress-and-forward and amplify-and-forward, under two different modes of operation. In the first mode, coined passive user mode, the users receive signals from both the BS and the untrusted relay, and combine them to decode their messages. In the second mode, coined active user mode, the users transmit a cooperative jamming signal simultaneously with the BS's transmission to further confuse the relay. Focusing on half-duplex nodes, the users cannot receive the BS's signal while jamming the relay, i.e., while being active, and rely only on the signals forwarded to them by the relay. It is shown that the best relaying scheme highly depends on the system parameters, in particular distances between the nodes, and also on which part of the secrecy rate region the system is to operate at.

Impact of Beam Misalignment on Hybrid Beamforming NOMA for mmWave Communications

This paper studies hybrid beamforming (HB)-based non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) in multiuser millimeter wave (mmWave) communications. HB offers power-efficient and low-complexity precoding for downlink multiuser mmWave systems which increases multiplexing gain and spectral efficiency of the system. Applying NOMA to HB-based systems, called HB-NOMA, can scale the number of users while offering a high spectral efficiency. However, an imperfect correlation between the effective channels of users in each NOMA cluster seriously degrades the achievable rate of HB-NOMA. In this paper, first a sum-rate maximization problem is formulated for HB-NOMA, and an algorithm is proposed to solve it effectively. It is then shown that the relationship between the effective channels of the users in each NOMA cluster can be approximated by a correlation factor. Next, the effect of imperfect correlation is analyzed, and a lower bound on the achievable rate of the users is derived for both perfect and imperfect correlation. Finally, the rate gap resulting from an imperfect correlation is evaluated and a tight upper bound is derived for that. Simulation results show that low correlation degrades the achievable rate of users. The lower bounds are tight in the large dimensional regime and in single-path channels.

Wireless Powered Cooperative Relaying using NOMA with Imperfect CSI

The impact of imperfect channel state (CSI) information in an energy harvesting (EH) cooperative non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network, consisting of a source, two users, and an EH relay is investigated in this paper. The relay is not equipped with a fixed power source and acts as a wireless powered node to help signal transmission to the users. Closed-form expressions for the outage probability of both users are derived under imperfect CSI for two different power allocation strategies namely fixed and dynamic power allocation. Monte Carlo simulations are used to numerically evaluate the effect of imperfect CSI. These results confirm the theoretical outage analysis and show that NOMA can outperform orthogonal multiple access even with imperfect CSI.

Securing Downlink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Systems by Trusted Relays

A downlink single-input single-output non-orthogonal multiple access system is considered in which a base station (BS) is communicating with two legitimate users in the presence of an external eavesdropper. A group of trusted cooperative half-duplex relay nodes, powered by the BS, is employed to assist the BS's transmission. The goal is to design relaying schemes such that the legitimate users' secrecy rate region is maximized subject to a total power constraint on the BS and the relays' transmissions. Three relaying schemes are investigated: cooperative jamming, decode-and-forward, and amplify-and-forward. Depending on the scheme, secure beamforming signals are carefully designed for the relay nodes that either diminish the eavesdropper's rate without affecting that of the legitimate users, or increase the legitimate users' rates without increasing that of the eavesdropper. The results show that there is no relaying scheme that fits all conditions; the best relaying scheme depends on the system parameters, namely, the relays' and eavesdropper's distances from the BS, and the number of relays. They also show that the relatively simple cooperative jamming scheme outperforms other schemes when the relays are far from the BS and/or close to the eavesdropper.

Optimal Beamforming for Gaussian MIMO Wiretap Channels with Two Transmit Antennas

A Gaussian multiple-input multiple-output wiretap channel in which the eavesdropper and legitimate receiver are equipped with arbitrary numbers of antennas and the transmitter has two antennas is studied in this paper. Under an average power constraint, the optimal input covariance to obtain the secrecy capacity of this channel is unknown, in general. In this paper, the input covariance matrix required to achieve the capacity is determined. It is shown that the secrecy capacity of this channel can be achieved by linear precoding. The optimal precoding and power allocation schemes that maximize the achievable secrecy rate, and thus achieve the capacity, are developed subsequently. The secrecy capacity is then compared with the achievable secrecy rate of generalized singular value decomposition (GSVD)-based precoding, which is the best previously proposed technique for this problem. Numerical results demonstrate that substantial gain can be obtained in secrecy rate between the proposed and GSVD-based precodings.

Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access in Multi-Cell Networks: Theory, Performance, and Practical Challenges

Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is a potential enabler for the development of 5G and beyond wireless networks. By allowing multiple users to share the same time and frequency, NOMA can scale up the number of served users, increase the spectral efficiency, and improve user-fairness compared to existing orthogonal multiple access (OMA) techniques. While single-cell NOMA has drawn significant attention recently, much less attention has been given to multi-cell NOMA. This article discusses the opportunities and challenges of NOMA in a multi-cell environment. As the density of base stations and devices increases, inter-cell interference becomes a major obstacle in multi-cell networks. As such, identifying techniques that combine interference management approaches with NOMA is of great significance. After discussing the theory behind NOMA, this paper provides an overview of the current literature and discusses key implementation and research challenges, with an emphasis on multi-cell NOMA.
