Long-distance radiative excitation transfer between quantum dots in disordered photonic crystal waveguides

We theoretically investigate the magnitude and range of the photon-mediated interaction between two quantum dots embedded in a photonic crystal waveguide, including fabrication disorder both in the crystal and in the dot positioning. We find that disorder-induced light localization has a drastic effect on the excitation transfer rate - as compared to an ideal structure - and that this rate varies widely among different disorder configurations. Nevertheless, we also find that significant rates of 50 micro-eV at a range of 10 micro-meters can be achieved in realistic systems.

Radiative coupling of quantum dots in photonic crystal structures

We derive a general formalism to model the polariton states resulting from the radiation-matter interaction between an arbitrary number of excitonic transitions in semiconductor quantum dots and photon modes in a photonic crystal structure in which the quantum dots are embedded. The Maxwell equations, including the linear nonlocal susceptibility of the exciton transitions in the quantum dots, are cast into an eigenvalue problem, which can be applied to any structure whose photon modes can be computed with reliable accuracy, and in addition naturally allows for disorder effects to be taken into account. We compute realistic photon modes using Bloch-mode expansion. As example systems, we study typical InGaAs quantum dots in a GaAs photonic crystal structures -- an $Ln$ cavity or a $\mathit{W1}$ waveguide. For a single dot, we reproduce known analytical results, while for the two dot case, we study the radiative excitation transfer mechanism and characterize its strength, the dependence on the detuning between quantum dot and photon modes, and the dependence on inter-dot distance. We find in particular that the inter-dot radiative coupling strength can reach $100 μ{eV}$ in a short cavity, and its decay with distance in longer cavities and waveguides is determined by the group velocity of the exchanged photons and their radiative lifetime. We also show that, for an $Ln$ cavity of increasing length, the radiative excitation transfer mechanism is subject to a crossover from a regime where a single photon mode is dominating, to a multi-mode regime -- occurring around $\mathit{n}$ = 150 for the system under study.

Effect of hole-shape irregularities on photonic crystal waveguides

The effect of irregular hole shape on the spectrum and radiation losses of a photonic crystal waveguide is studied using Bloch-mode expansion. Deviations from a perfectly circular hole are characterized by a radius fluctuation amplitude and correlation angle. It is found that the parameter which determines the magnitude of the effect of disorder is the standard deviation of the hole areas. Hence, for a fixed amplitude of the radius fluctuation around the hole, those effects are strongly dependent on the correlation angle of the irregular shape. This result suggests routes to potentially improve the quality of photonic crystal structures.

Symmetry breaking in (gravitating) scalar field models describing interacting boson stars and Q-balls

We investigate the properties of interacting Q-balls and boson stars that sit on top of each other in great detail. The model that describes these solutions is essentially a (gravitating) two-scalar field model where both scalar fields are complex. We construct interacting Q-balls or boson stars with arbitrarily small charges but finite mass. We observe that in the interacting case - where the interaction can be either due to the potential or due to gravity - two types of solutions exist for equal frequencies: one for which the two scalar fields are equal, but also one for which the two scalar fields differ. This constitutes a symmetry breaking in the model. While for Q-balls asymmetric solutions have always corresponding symmetric solutions and are thus likely unstable to decay to symmetric solutions with lower energy, there exists a parameter regime for interacting boson stars, where only asymmetric solutions exist. We present the domain of existence for two interacting non-rotating solutions as well as for solutions describing the interaction between rotating and non-rotating Q-balls and boson stars, respectively.

p-q-superstrings in Anti-de-Sitter space-time

We study a field theoretical model for p-q-superstrings in a fixed Anti-de-Sitter background. We find that the presence of the negative cosmological constant tends to decrease the core radius of the strings. Moreover, the binding energy decreases with the increase of the absolute value of the cosmological constant. Studying the effect of the p-q-strings on Anti-de-Sitter space, we observe that the presence of the negative cosmological constant tends to decrease the deficit angle as compared to asymptotically flat space-time.
