The fate of the spin polaron in the 1D antiferromagnets

The stability of the spin polaron quasiparticle, well established in studies of a single hole in the 2D antiferromagnets, is investigated in the 1D antiferromagnets using a t-J model. We perform an exact slave fermion transformation to the holon-magnon basis, and diagonalize numerically the resulting model in the presence of a single hole. We demonstrate that the spin polaron collapses - and the spin-charge separation takes over - due to the specific role played by the magnon-magnon interactions and the magnon hard-core constraint in the 1D t-J model. Moreover, we prove that the spin polaron is stable for any strength of the magnon-magnon interaction other than the unique value found in a 1D antiferromagnet with the continuous symmetry of the spin interactions. Fine-tuning to this unique value is extremely unlikely to occur in quasi-1D antiferromagnets, therefore the spin polaron is the stable quasiparticle of realistic 1D materials. Our results lead to a new interpretation of the ARPES spectra of quasi-1D antiferromagnets in the spin polaron language.

Resonant multiple-phonon absorption causes efficient anti-Stokes photoluminescence in CsPbBr$_3$ nanocrystals

Lead-halide perovskite nanocrystals such as CsPbBr$_3$, exhibit efficient photoluminescence (PL) up-conversion, also referred to as anti-Stokes photoluminescence (ASPL). This is a phenomenon where irradiating nanocrystals up to 100 meV below gap results in higher energy band edge emission. Most surprising is that ASPL efficiencies approach unity and involve single photon interactions with multiple phonons. This is unexpected given the statistically disfavored nature of multiple-phonon absorption. Here, we report and rationalize near-unity anti-Stokes photoluminescence efficiencies in CsPbBr$_3$ nanocrystals and attribute it to resonant multiple-phonon absorption by polarons. The theory explains paradoxically large efficiencies for intrinsically disfavored, multiple-phonon-assisted ASPL in nanocrystals. Moreover, the developed microscopic mechanism has immediate and important implications for applications of ASPL towards condensed phase optical refrigeration.

Extrapolation of polaron properties to low phonon frequencies by Bayesian machine learning

Feasibility of accurate quantum calculations is often restricted by the dimensionality of the truncated Hilbert space required for the numerical computations. The present work demonstrates Bayesian machine learning (ML) models that use quantum properties in an effectively lower-dimensional Hilbert space to make predictions for the Hamiltonian parameters that require a larger basis set as applied to a classical problem in quantum statistical mechanics, the polaron problem. We consider two polaron models: the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model and the mixed SSH-Holstein model. We demonstrate ML models that can extrapolate polaron properties in the phonon frequency. We consider the sharp transition in the ground-state momentum of the SSH polaron and examine the evolution of this transition from the anti-adiabatic regime to the adiabatic regime. We also demonstrate Bayesian models that use the posterior distributions of highly approximate quantum calculations as the prior distribution for models of more accurate quantum results. This drastically reduces the number of fully converged quantum calculations required to map out the polaron dispersion relations for the full range of Hamiltonian parameters of interest.

Electron addition spectral functions of low-density polaron liquids

Spectral functions are important quantities that contain a wealth of information about the quasiparticles of a system, and that can also be measured experimentally. For systems with electron-phonon coupling, good approximations for the spectral function are available only in the Migdal limit (at Fermi energies much larger than the typical phonon frequency, $E_F\gg Ω$, requiring a large carrier concentration $x$) and in the single polaron limit (at $x=0$). Here we show that the region with $x\ll 1$ ($E_F <Ω$) can also be reliably investigated with the Momentum Average (MA) variational approximation, which essentially describes the formation of a polaron above an inert Fermi sea. Specifically, we show that for the one-dimensional spinless Holstein model, the MA spectral functions compare favorably with those calculated using variationally exact density matrix renormalization group simulations (DMRG) evaluated directly in frequency-space, so long as $x<0.1$ and the adiabaticity ratio $Ω/t>0.5$. Unlike in the Migdal limit, here 'polaronic physics' emerges already at moderate couplings. The relevance of these results for a spinful low-$x$ metal is also discussed.

Exciton dissociation mediated by phonons in organic photovoltaics

It is well known that phonons can overscreen the bare Coulomb electron-electron repulsion, turning it into the effective attraction that binds the Cooper pairs responsible for BCS superconductivity. Here, we use a simple lattice model to prove that the counterpart of this is also possible, whereby phonons overscreen the bare electron-hole attraction and may turn it repulsive at short distances, driving exciton dissociation in certain regions of the parameter space. We argue that this phonon-mediated short-range screening plays an important role in the physics of organic solar cell materials (and other materials with strong electron-phonon coupling) and could point the way to new strategies for optimizing their efficiencies.

Bipolaron liquids at strong Peierls electron-phonon couplings

We use the Density Matrix Renormalization Group method to study a one-dimensional chain with Peierls electron-phonon coupling, which describes the modulation of the electron hopping by lattice distortions. We demonstrate that this system is stable against phase separation in the dilute density limit. We only find phase separation numerically for large couplings for which the linear approximation for the electron-phonon coupling becomes invalid; this behavior can be stabilized in a narrow sliver of the physical parameter space if the dispersion of the phonons is carefully tuned. These results indicate that in the dilute electron density limit, Peierls bipolaron liquids are generically stable, unlike in other models of electron-phonon coupling. We show that this behavior extends to finite carrier concentrations of up to quarter filling. This stability of low-density, light-mass bipolaron liquids in the Peierls model opens a path to high-$T_c$ superconductivity based on a bipolaronic mechanism, in higher dimensions.

The Generalized Green's function Cluster Expansion: A Python package for simulating polarons

We present an efficient implementation of the Generalized Green's function Cluster Expansion (GGCE), which is a new method for computing the ground-state properties and dynamics of polarons (single electrons coupled to lattice vibrations) in model electron-phonon systems. The GGCE works at arbitrary temperature and is well suited for a variety of electron-phonon couplings, including, but not limited to, site and bond Holstein and Peierls (Su-Schrieffer-Heeger) couplings, and couplings to multiple phonon modes with different energy scales and coupling strengths. Quick calculations can be performed efficiently on a laptop using solvers from NumPy and SciPy, or in parallel at scale using the PETSc sparse linear solver engine.

Stabilization of singlet hole-doped state in infinite-layer nickelate superconductors

Motivated by the recent X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments, we use a detailed impurity model to explore the nature of the parent compound and hole doped states of (La, Nd, Pr)NiO$_2$ by including the crystal field splitting, the Ni-$3d$ multiplet structure, and the hybridization between Ni-$3d$, O-$2p$, and Nd-$5d$ orbitals. For simplicity and stimulated by the recent electronic structure calculations, the latter are formally replaced with symmetric orbitals centered at the missing O sites in the Nd layer, forming a two-dimensional (2D) band strongly hybridizing with the Ni-$3d^9_{z^2}$ state. This hybridization pushes the main part of the $3d^9_{z^2}$ spectral function up in energy by several eV and stabilizes the singlet with considerable $d^9_{z^2}$ and other configurational components. For the parent compound, we find that states of Ni-$3d^9_{z^2}$ character spread over a large energy range in the spectra, and cannot and should not be represented by a single orbital energy, as suggested in other approximations. This is qualitatively consistent with the RIXS measurements showing a broad distribution of the Ni-$3d^9_{z^2}$ hole state, although the shape of the Ni-$3d^9_{z^2}$ related structure is much more complicated requiring reinterpretations of the RIXS data. For the hole-doped systems, we show that adding these additional ingredients can still result in the lowest-energy hole doped state having a singlet character.

Dressing due to correlations strongly reduces the effect of electron-phonon coupling

We investigate the difference between the coupling of a bare carrier to phonons versus the coupling of a correlations-dressed quasiparticle to phonons, and show that latter may be weak even if the former is strong. Specifically, we analyze the effect of the hole-phonon coupling on the dispersion of the quasiparticle that forms when a single hole is doped into a cuprate layer. To model this, we start from the three-band Emery model supplemented by the Peierls modulation of the $p$-$d$ and $p$-$p$ hoppings due to the motion of O ions. We then project onto the strongly correlated $U_{dd}\rightarrow \infty$ limit where charge fluctuations are frozen on the Cu site. The resulting effective Hamiltonian describes the motion of a doped hole on the O sublattice, and its interactions with Cu spins and O phonons. We show that even though the hole-phonon coupling is moderate to strong, it leads to only a very minor increase of the quasiparticle's effective mass as compared to its mass in the absence of coupling to phonons, consistent with a weak coupling to phonons of the correlations-dressed quasiparticle. We explain the reasons for this suppression, revealing why it is expected to happen in any systems with strong correlations.

Role of long-range coupling on the properties of single polarons in models with dual electron-phonon couplings

We use the Variational Exact Diagonalization to investigate the single polaron properties for four different dual models, combining a short-range off-diagonal (Peierls) plus a longer-range diagonal (Holstein or breathing-mode) coupling. This allows us to investigate the sensitivity of various polaron properties both to the range of the diagonal coupling and to the specific diagonal coupling chosen. We find strong sensitivity to the range for all duals models as the adiabatic limit is approached, however considerable sensitivity is observed for some quantities even for large phonon frequencies. Also, the strong dependence of the results on the specific form of the diagonal coupling is observed everywhere in the parameter space. Taken together, these results suggest that careful consideration must be given to the specific coupling and its proper range when quantitative comparisons with experiments are sought.

Theory of dispersive optical phonons in resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments

The community currently lacks a complete understanding of how resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) experiments probe the electron-phonon ($e$-ph) interaction in solids. For example, most theoretical models of this process have focused on dispersionless Einstein phonons. Using a recently developed momentum average (MA) variational approximation for computing RIXS spectra of band insulators, we examine the influence of both electron and phonon dispersion in the intermediate state of the scattering process. We find that the inclusion of either, and their mutual interplay, introduces significant momentum variations in the RIXS intensity, even for momentum-independent electron-phonon coupling. The phonon dispersion also induces nontrivial changes in the excitation line shapes, which can have a quantitative impact on the data analysis. These results highlight the considerable challenges of interpreting RIXS data in actual materials.

Effects of reduced dimensionality, crystal field, electron-lattice coupling, and strain on the ground-state of a rare-earth nickelates monolayer

Motivated by the potential for cuprate-like superconductivity in monolayer rare-earth nickelate superlattices, we study the effects of crystal field splitting, lattice distortions and strain on the charge, magnetic, and orbital order in undoped two-dimensional (2D) nickelate monolayers $R$NiO$_3$. We use a two-band Hubbard model to describe the low-energy electron states, with correlations controlled by a effective Hubbard $U$ and Hund's $J$. The electrons are coupled to the octahedral breathing-mode lattice distortions. Treating the lattice semiclassically, we apply the Hartree-Fock approximation to obtain the phase diagram for the ground-state as a function of the various parameters. We find that the 2D confinement leads to strong preference for the planar $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital even in the absence of a crystal-field splitting. The $d_{x^2-y^2}$ polarization is enhanced by adding a crystal field splitting, whereas coupling to breathing-mode lattice distortions weakens it. However, the former effect is stronger, leading to $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital and antiferromagnetic (AFM) order at reasonable values of $U,J$ and thus to the possibility to realize cuprate-like superconductivity in this 2D material upon doping. We also find that the application of tensile strain enhances the cuprate-like phase and phases with orbital polarization in general, by reducing the $t_2 / t_1$ ratio of next-nearest to nearest neighbour hopping. On the contrary, systems with compressive stress have an increased hopping ratio and consequently show a preference for ferromagnetic (FM) phases, including, unexpectedly, the out-of-plane $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ FM phase.

Renormalized phonon spectrum of polyacetylene and similar materials

Motivated to understand the phonon spectrum renormalization in the ground state of the half-filled SSH model, we use the Born-Oppenheimer approximation together with the harmonic approximation to evaluate the all-to-all real-space ionic force constants generated through the electron-phonon interaction. Using these force constants, we compute the renormalized phonon spectrum and study its behaviour as a function of the Peierls distortion. For the undimerized chain we confirm the presence of a large Kohn anomaly at $2k_F$, signalling a strong lattice instability. For the dimerized chain, we find an optical branch separated by a gap from the acoustic one, while the Kohn anomaly manifests as phonon softening. To find the equilibrium dimerization, we minimize the ground state energy, crucially including the contribution of the renormalized phonon zero-point energy (ZPE). Our results show strong agreement with prior \textit{ab initio} studies for trans-polyacetylene and linear acetylenic carbon (carbyne), validating our method which is much simpler, and moreover can be easily generalized to study other problems in higher dimensions.

Beyond the single-site approximation modeling of electron-phonon coupling effects on resonant inelastic X-ray scattering spectra

Resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is used increasingly for characterizing low-energy collective excitations in materials. RIXS is a powerful probe, which often requires sophisticated theoretical descriptions to interpret the data. In particular, the need for accurate theories describing the influence of electron-phonon ($e$-p) coupling on RIXS spectra is becoming timely, as instrument resolution improves and this energy regime is rapidly becoming accessible. To date, only rather exploratory theoretical work has been carried out for such problems. We begin to bridge this gap by proposing a versatile variational approximation for calculating RIXS spectra in weakly doped materials, for a variety of models with diverse $e$-p couplings. Here, we illustrate some of its potential by studying the role of electron mobility, which is completely neglected in the widely used local approximation based on Lang-Firsov theory. Assuming that the electron-phonon coupling is of the simplest, Holstein type, we discuss the regimes where the local approximation fails, and demonstrate that its improper use may grossly \textit{underestimate} the $e$-p coupling strength.

Polaron and bipolaron tendencies in a semiclassical model for hole-doped bismuthates

Bismuth perovskites ABiO$_3$ (A = Sr, Ba) host a variety of peculiar phenomena including bond-disproportionated insulating phases and high-temperature superconductivity upon hole doping. While the mechanisms underlying these phenomena are still debated, off-diagonal electron-phonon ($e$-ph) coupling originating from the modulation of the orbital overlaps has emerged as a promising candidate. Here, we employ classical Monte Carlo simulations to study a semiclassical three-orbital model with off-diagonal $e$-ph interactions. We demonstrate the existence of a (bi)polaron correlations that persists in the model at high temperatures and for hole doping away from the bond-disproportionated insulating phase. Using a spatiotemporal regression analysis between various local quantities and the lattice degrees of freedom, we also identify the similarity between heating- and doping-induced melting of a bond-disproportionated insulator at a microscopic level. Our results imply that (bi)polaron physics can be a unifying concept that helps us understand the rich bismuth perovskite phase diagram.

Peierls versus Holstein models for describing electron-phonon coupling in perovskites

We use the Momentum Average approximation together with perturbative approaches, in the appropriate limits, to study the single polaron physics on a perovskite lattice inspired by BaBiO3. We investigate electron-phonon coupling of the Peierls type whereby the motion of ions modulates the values of the hopping integrals between sites, and show that it cannot be mapped onto the simpler one-band Holstein model in the whole parameter space. This is because the dispersion of the Peierls polaron has sharp transitions where the ground-state momentum jumps between high-symmetry points in the Brillouin zone, whereas the Holstein polaron always has the same ground-state momentum. These results imply that careful consideration is required to choose the appropriate model for carrier-lattice coupling in such complex lattices.

The critical nature of the Ni spin state in doped NdNiO$_2$

Superconductivity with $T_c \approx 15K$ was recently found in doped NdNiO$_2$. The Ni$^{1+}$O$_2$ layers are expected to be Mott insulators so hole doping should produce Ni$^{2+}$ with $S=1$, incompatible with robust superconductivity. We show that the NiO$_2$ layers fall inside a ``critical'' region where the large $pd$ hybridization favors a singlet $^1\!A_1$ hole-doped state like in CuO$_2$. However, we find that the superexchange is about one order smaller than in cuprates, thus a magnon ``glue'' is very unlikely and another mechanism needs to be found.

The magnon-mediated attraction between two holes doped in a CuO$_2$ layer

Using a realistic multi-band model for two holes doped into a CuO$_2$ layer, we devise a method to turn off the magnon-mediated interaction between the holes. This allows us to verify that this interaction is attractive, and therefore could indeed be (part of) the superconducting glue. We derive its analytical expression and show that it consists of a novel kind of pair-hopping+spin-exchange terms. Its coupling constant is fitted from the ground state energy obtained with variational exact diagonalization, and it faithfully reproduces the effect of the magnon-mediated attraction in the entire Brillouin zone. For realistic parameter values, this effective interaction is borderline strong enough to bind the holes into preformed pairs.
