Phonon-assisted carrier motion on the Wannier-Stark ladder

It is well known that at zero temperature and in the absence of electron-phonon coupling, the presence of an electric field leads to localization of carriers residing in a single band of finite bandwidth. We implement the Self-Consistent Born Approximation (SCBA) to study the effect of weak electron-phonon coupling on the motion of a carrier in a biased system. At moderate and strong electron-phonon coupling we supplement the SCBA, describing the string of phonons left behind by the carrier, with the Momentum Average (MA) approximation to describe the phonon cloud that accompanies the resulting polaron. We find that coupling to the lattice delocalizes the carrier, as expected, although long-lived resonances resulting from the Wannier-Stark states of the polaron may appear in the spectrum in certain regions of the parameter space. The approach we propose here can also be used to implement and check the validity of simple variational approximations.

Large electropositive cations as surfactants for the growth of polar epitaxial films

Using density functional theory (DFT) we demonstrate that the adsorption of large cations such as potassium or cesium facilitates the epitaxial growth of polar LaAlO$_3$ (LAO) on SrTiO$_3$ (STO). The low ionization potential of K favors efficient electron transfer to the STO conduction band and results in a 2D electron gas which exactly compensates for the diverging potential with increasing layer thickness. For large cations like K or Cs, DFT total energy considerations show that they remain adsorbed on the LAO surface and do not enter substitutionally into LAO. These results suggest a novel scheme for growing clean LAO/STO interface systems, and polar systems in general, by performing the growth process in the presence of large, low ionization potential alkali metal ions.

The dynamics of a doped hole in cuprates is not controlled by spin fluctuations

Twenty seven years after the discovery of high-temperature superconductivity \cite{BedMu}, consensus on its theoretical explanation is still absent. To a good extent, this is due to the difficulty of studying strongly correlated systems near half-filling, needed to understand the behaviour of one or few holes doped into a CuO$_2$ layer. To simplify this task it is customary to replace three-band models \cite{Emery} describing the doping holes as entering the O $2p$ orbitals of these charge-transfer insulators \cite{ZSA} with much simpler one-band Hubbard or $tJ$ models \cite{rev1,rev2}. Here we challenge this approach, showing that not only is the dynamics of a doped hole easier to understand in models that explicitly include the O orbitals, but also that our solution contradicts the long-held belief that the quantum spin fluctuations of the antiferromagnetic (AFM) background play a key role in determining this dynamics. Indeed, we show that the correct, experimentally observed dispersion is generically obtained for a hole moving on the O sublattice, and coupled to a Néel lattice of spins without spin fluctuations. This marks a significant conceptual change in our understanding of the relevant phenomenology and opens the way to studying few-holes dynamics without finite-size effect issues \cite{BayoB}, to understand the actual strength of the "magnetic glue".

Strongly bound yet light bipolarons for double-well electron-phonon coupling

We use the Momentum Average approximation (MA) to study the ground-state properties of strongly bound bipolarons in the double-well electron-phonon (el-ph) coupling model, which describes certain intercalated lattices where the linear term in the el-ph coupling vanishes due tosymmetry. We show that this model predicts the existence of strongly bound yet lightweight bipolarons in some regions of the parameter space. This provides a novel mechanism for the appearance of such bipolarons, in addition to long-range el-ph coupling and special lattice geometries.

Single polaron properties for double-well electron-phonon coupling

We show that in crystals where light ions are symmetrically intercalated between heavy ions, the electron-phonon coupling for carriers located at the light sites cannot be described by a Holstein model. We introduce the double-well electron-phonon coupling model to describe the most interesting parameter regime in such systems, and study it in the single carrier limit using the momentum average approximation. For sufficiently strong coupling, a small polaron with a robust phonon cloud appears at low energies. While some of its properties are similar to those of a Holstein polaron, we highlight some crucial differences. These prove that the physics of the double-well electron-phonon coupling model cannot be reproduced with a linear Holstein model.

Charge disproportionation without charge transfer in the rare-earth nickelates as a possible mechanism for the metal-insulator transition

We study a model for the metal-insulator (MI) transition in the rare-earth nickelates RNiO$_3$, based upon a negative charge transfer energy and coupling to a rock-salt like lattice distortion of the NiO$_6$ octahedra. Using exact diagonalization and the Hartree-Fock approximation we demonstrate that electrons couple strongly to these distortions. For small distortions the system is metallic, with ground state of predominantly $d^8\ligand$ character, where $\ligand$ denotes a ligand hole. For sufficiently large distortions ($δd_{\rm Ni-O} \sim 0.05 - 0.10Å$), however, a gap opens at the Fermi energy as the system enters a periodically distorted state alternating along the three crystallographic axes, with $(d^8\ligand^2)_{S=0}(d^8)_{S=1}$ character, where $S$ is the total spin. Thus the MI transition may be viewed as being driven by an internal volume "collapse" where the NiO$_6$ octahedra with two ligand holes shrink around their central Ni, while the remaining octahedra expand accordingly, resulting in the ($1/2,1/2,1/2$) superstructure observed in x-ray diffraction in the insulating phase. This insulating state is an example of a new type of charge ordering achieved without any actual movement of the charge.

Binding carriers to a non-magnetic impurity in a two-dimensional square Ising antiferromagnet

A hole in a two-dimensional Ising antiferromagnet was believed to be infinitely heavy due to the string of wrongly oriented spins it creates as it moves, which should trap it near its original location. Trugman showed that, in fact, the hole acquires a finite effective mass due to contributions from so-called {\it Trugman loop} processes, where the hole goes nearly twice around closed loops, first creating and then removing wrongly-oriented spins, and ending up at a different lattice site. This generates effective second- and third-nearest-neighbor hopping terms which keep the quasiparticle on the sublattice it was created on. Here, we investigate the trapping of the quasiparticle near a single attractive non-magnetic impurity placed at one lattice site. We consider the two cases with the quasiparticle and impurity being on the same versus on different sublattices. The main result is that even though the quasiparticle can not see the bare disorder in the latter case, the coupling to magnons generates an effective renormalized disorder on its own sublattice which is strong enough to lead to bound states, which however have a very different spectrum than when the quasiparticle and impurity are on the same sublattice.

The effect of dispersive optical phonons on the behaviour of a Holstein polaron

We use the approximation-free Bold Diagrammatic Monte Carlo technique to study the effects of a finite dispersion of the optical phonon mode on the properties of the Holstein polaron, especially its effective mass. For weak electron-phonon coupling the effect is very small, but it becomes significant for moderate and large electron-phonon coupling. The effective mass is found to increase (decrease) if the phonon dispersion has a negative (positive) curvature at the centre of the Brillouin zone.

Hidden Quasiparticles and Incoherent Photoemission Spectra in Na2IrO3

We study two Heisenberg-Kitaev t-J-like models on a honeycomb lattice, focusing on the zigzag magnetic phase of Na$_2$IrO$_3$, and investigate hole motion by exact diagonalization and variational methods. The spectral functions are quite distinct from those of cuprates and are dominated by large incoherent spectral weight at high energy, almost independent of the microscopic parameters --- a universal and generic feature for zigzag magnetic correlations. We explain why quasiparticles at low energy are strongly suppressed in the photoemission spectra and determine an analog of a pseudogap. We point out that the qualitative features of the predominantly incoherent spectra obtained within the two different models for the zigzag phase are similar, and they have remarkable similarity to recently reported angular resolved photoemission spectra for Na$_2$IrO$_3$.

A variational approach for calculating Auger electron spectra: going beyond the impurity approximation

We propose a novel variational method to calculate the two-hole propagators relevant for Auger spectroscopy in transition metal oxides. This method can be thought of as an intermediary step between the full solution (which is difficult to generalize to systems with partially filled bands) and the impurity approximation. Like the former, our solution has full translational invariance, and like the latter, it can be generalized to certain types of systems with partially filled bands. Here we compare both our variational approximation and the impurity approximation against the exact solution for a simple one-dimensional model with filled bands. We show that when the energies of the eigenstates residing primarily on the transition metal ions do not overlap with those of the eigenstates residing primarily on Oxygen ions, both approximations are valid but the variational approach is superior.

Investigating polaron transitions with polar molecules

We determine the phase diagram of a polaron model with mixed breathing-mode and Su-Schrieffer-Heeger couplings and show that it has two sharp transitions, in contrast to pure models which exhibit one (for Su-Schrieffer-Heeger coupling) or no (for breathing-mode coupling) transition. Our results indicate that the physics of realistic mixed polaron models is much richer than that of simplified models. We then show that ultracold molecules trapped in optical lattices can be used to study precisely this mixed Hamiltonian, and that the relative contributions of the two couplings can be tuned with external electric fields. The parameters of current experimental set-ups place them in the region where one of the transitions occurs. We propose a scheme to measure the polaron dispersion using stimulated Raman spectroscopy.

A perturbational study of the lifetime of a Holstein polaron in the presence of weak disorder

Using the momentum average (MA) approximation, we find an analytical expression for the disorder-averaged Green's function of a Holstein polaron in a three-dimensional simple cubic lattice with random on-site energies. The on-site disorder is assumed to be weak compared to the kinetic energy of the polaron, and is treated perturbationally. Within this scheme, the states at the bottom of the polaron band are found to have an infinite lifetime, signaling a failure of perturbation theory at these energies. The higher-energy polaron states have a finite lifetime. We study this lifetime and the disorder-induced energy shift of these eigenstates for various strengths of disorder and electron-phonon coupling. We compare our findings to the predictions of Fermi's golden rule and the average T-matrix method, and find a significant quantitative discrepancy at strong electron-phonon coupling, where the polaron lifetime is much shorter than Fermi's golden rule prediction. We attribute this to the renormalization of the on-site potential by the electron-phonon coupling.

The role of the lattice structure in determining the magnon-mediated interactions between charge carriers doped into a magnetically ordered background

We use two recently proposed methods to calculate exactly the spectrum of two spin-${1\over 2}$ charge carriers moving in a ferromagnetic background, at zero temperature, for three types of models. By comparing the low-energy states in both the one-carrier and the two-carrier sectors, we analyze whether complex models with multiple sublattices can be accurately described by simpler Hamiltonians, such as one-band models. We find that while this is possible in the one-particle sector, the magnon-mediated interactions which are key to properly describe the two-carrier states of the complex model are not reproduced by the simpler models. We argue that this is true not just for ferromagnetic, but also for antiferromagnetic backgrounds. Our results question the ability of simple one-band models to accurately describe the low-energy physics of cuprate layers.

Magnon-mediated interactions between fermions depend strongly on the lattice structure

We propose two new methods to calculate exactly the spectrum of two spin-${1\over 2}$ charge carriers moving in a ferromagnetic background, at zero temperature. We find that if the spins are located on a different sublattice than that on which the fermions move, magnon-mediated effective interactions are very strong and can bind the fermions into low-energy bipolarons with triplet character. This never happens in models where spins and charge carriers share the same lattice, whether they are in the same band or in different bands. This proves that effective one-lattice models do not describe correctly the low-energy part of the two-carrier spectrum of a two-sublattice model, even though they may describe the low-energy single-carrier spectrum appropriately.

Trapping of three-dimensional Holstein polarons by various impurities

We study the bound states of a three-dimensional Holstein polaron near various kinds of single impurities, using the momentum average approximation. We show that the electron-phonon coupling is responsible for a strong renormalization of the impurity potential, resulting in an effective potential with significant retardation effects, which describes essential physics ignored by "instantaneous" approximations. The accuracy of our approximation is gauged by comparison with results from Diagrammatic Monte Carlo for the case of an impurity that modifies the on-site energy of the electron. We also discuss impurities that modify the local strength of the electron-phonon coupling, as well as isotope substitutions that change both the electron-phonon coupling and the phonon frequency, and contrast and highlight the difference between these cases.

Few-particle Green's functions for strongly correlated systems on infinite lattices

We show how few-particle Green's functions can be calculated efficiently for models with nearest-neighbor hopping, for infinite lattices in any dimension. As an example, for one dimensional spinless fermions with both nearest-neighbor and second nearest-neighbor interactions, we investigate the ground states for up to 5 fermions. This allows us not only to find the stability region of various bound complexes, but also to infer the phase diagram at small but finite concentrations.

Optical conductivity of the Holstein polaron

The Momentum Average approximation is used to derive a new kind of non-perturbational analytical expression for the optical conductivity (OC) of a Holstein polaron at zero temperature. This provides insight into the shape of the OC, by linking it to the structure of the polaron's phonon cloud. Our method works in any dimension, properly enforces selection rules, can be systematically improved, and also generalizes to momentum-dependent couplings. Its accuracy is demonstrated by a comparison with the first detailed set of three-dimensional numerical OC results, obtained using the approximation-free diagrammatic Monte Carlo method.

A computational approach to a doped antiferromagnet: correlations between two spin-polarons in the lightly doped CuO$_2$ plane

We extend the methods recently introduced in Phys. Rev. Lett. 106 036401 (2011) to investigate correlations between two spin-polarons in a quasi-two-dimensional CuO2 layer. The low-energy wavefunctions for two doped holes introduced in a half-filled CuO2 plane with 32 copper and 64 oxygen sites are calculated explicitly using an efficient yet accurate truncation scheme to model the antiferromagnet background. The energetics and wavefucntions show that the charges form three-spin polarons and the spin is carried by a disturbance around the three-spin polaron core. The low-energy band results from the competition between the kinetic energy and a local attractive potential which favors d(x^2-y^2) states. Lastly, we point out features that are expected to be robust for larger systems.
