Unsupervised and lightly supervised learning in particle physics

We review the main applications of machine learning models that are not fully supervised in particle physics, i.e., clustering, anomaly detection, detector simulation, and unfolding. Unsupervised methods are ideal for anomaly detection tasks -- machine learning models can be trained on background data to identify deviations if we model the background data precisely. The learning can also be partially unsupervised when we can provide some information about the anomalies at the data level. Generative models are useful in speeding up detector simulations -- they can mimic the computationally intensive task without large resources. They can also efficiently map detector-level data to parton-level data (i.e., data unfolding). In this review, we focus on interesting ideas and connections and briefly overview the underlying techniques wherever necessary.

A comparative study of the $S_1$ and $U_1$ leptoquark effects in the light quark regime

We study the phenomenology of two leptoquarks, the Standard Model $SU(2)$ singlets $S_1$ and $U_1$, with regard to the latest experimental data from the low-energy flavor physics measurements, LHC, and the IceCube neutrino experiment. We consider a scenario when scalar (vector) leptoquark $S_1$ ($U_1$) couples exclusively to the down quark and the neutrinos (charged leptons) of all flavors, where the leptoquark in question couples to the SM lepton doublets. The couplings of $S_1$ ($U_1$) to the up-type quarks and the charged leptons (neutrinos) are in turn uniquely determined via $SU(2)$ symmetry. We find that the most important constraints on the leptoquark parameter space originate from flavor physics measurements, followed by the LHC search limits that take over the flavor physics ones in the large LQ mass regime. We furthermore show that $S_1$ ($U_1$) marginally improves (spoils) the fit of the current IceCube data with respect to the SM case within the region of parameter space that is otherwise consistent with various low-energy flavor physics measurements and the latest LHC input. Our study offers an up-to-date analysis for these two leptoquarks in view of the latest experimental data.

On lepton flavour universality in semileptonic $B_c \to η_c, J/ψ$ decays

We discuss $B_c \to η_c$ and $B_c \to J/ψ$ semileptonic decays within the Standard Model (SM) and beyond. The relevant transition form factors, being the main source of theoretical uncertainties, are calculated in the sum rule approach and are provided in a full $q^2$ range. We calculate the semileptonic branching fractions and find for the ratios, $R_{η_c}|_{\rm SM}= 0.32 \pm 0.02$, $R_{J/ψ}|_{\rm SM} = 0.23 \pm 0.01$. Both predictions are in agreement with other existing calculations and support the current tension in $R_{J/ψ}$ at 2$σ$ level with the experiment. To extend the potential of testing the SM in the semileptonic $B_c$ decays, we consider the forward-backward asymmetry and polarization observables. We also study the 4-fold differential distributions of $B_c \rightarrow J/ψ(J/ψ\to \tilde{\ell}^-\tilde{\ell}^+ ) \ell^- \barν_\ell$, where $\tilde{\ell} = e, μ$, in the presence of different new physics scenarios and find that the new physics effects can significantly modify the angular observables and can also produce effects which do not exist in the SM. Using the constraints on the new physics couplings from the recent combined analysis of BaBar, Belle and LHCb data on semileptonic $B \to D^{(\ast)}$ decays, where the effects of new physics could be visible, we find that these different new physics scenarios are not able to simultaneously explain the current experimental value of $R_{J/ψ}$.

Loop induced $H^\pm \rightarrow W^\pm Z$ decays in the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model

We present a complete one-loop computation of the $H^\pm \rightarrow W^\pm Z$ decay in the aligned two-Higgs-doublet model. The constraints from the electroweak precision observables, perturbative unitarity, vacuum stability and flavour physics are all taken into account along with the latest Large Hadron Collider searches for the charged Higgs. It is observed that a large enhancement of the branching ratio can be obtained in the limit where there is a large splitting between the charged and pseudo-scalar Higgs masses as well as for the largest allowed values of the alignment parameter $ς_u$. We find that the maximum possible branching ratio in the case of a large mass splitting between $m_{H^\pm}$ and $m_A$ is $\approx 10^{-3}$ for $m_{H^\pm} \in (200,700)$ GeV which is in the reach of the high luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider.

Testing spin-2 mediator by angular observables in $b\rightarrow s μ^+ μ^-$

We consider effects of spin-2 particle in the $b\rightarrow s μ^+ μ^-$ transition assuming that the spin-2 particle couples in a flavour non-universal way to $b$ and $s$ quarks and in the leptonic sector couples only to the muons, thereby only contributing to the process $b\rightarrow s μ^+ μ^-$. The $B_s - \bar B_s$ transition gives the strong constraint on the coupling of the spin-2 mediator and $b$ and $s$ quarks while the observed discrepancy from the SM prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment $ (g-2)_μ$ serves us to constrain the $μ$-coupling to spin-2 particle. We find that the spin-2 particle can modify the angular observables in the $B \to K μ^+ μ^-$ and $B \to K^* μ^+ μ^-$ decays and produce effects which do not exist in the SM. The generated forward-backward asymmetries in these processes can reach $15\%$, while other observables for these decays receive tiny effects.

Seeking the CP-odd Higgs via $h\rightarrow η_{c,b}\ell^+\ell^-$

We show that the decay rates of the Higgs boson to a pseudoscalar quarkonium and a pair of leptons, $h\to P\ell^+\ell^-$ ($P\in\{η_c,η_b\}$), can be substantially enhanced in a scenario with two Higgs doublets with a softly broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry (2HDM) when the CP-odd Higgs A is light, i.e. $m_A\lesssim m_h$. Depending on the type of 2HDM the enhancement of $\mathcal{B}(h\to η_{c,b}τ^+τ^-)$ with respect to its Standard Model value can be an order of magnitude larger, i.e. $\mathcal{O}(10^{-6}\div10^{-5})$. The decays $h\to P\ell^+\ell^-$ could therefore provide an efficient channel to investigate the presence of a light CP-odd Higgs $A$ and help to disentangle among various 2HDM scenarios.

Exploring the Top-Higgs FCNC Couplings at Polarized Linear Colliders with Top Spin Observables

We study the nature of the flavor changing neutral couplings of the top quark with the Higgs boson and the up/charm quark in the $t\bar{t}$ production at linear colliders. There are previous bounds on such tqH couplings at both, linear and hadronic colliders, with the assumption that it couples equally to the left and the right handed fermions. In this paper we examine the chirality of the tqH coupling and construct different observables which will be sensitive to it. The kinematics of the emitted q from t $\rightarrow$ qH in $t\bar{t}$ production is discussed and it was found that the polar angle distribution of q is sensitive to the chiral nature of tqH couplings. The observables in the context of top-antitop spin correlations, which are sensitive to new physics in the top decay are considered using different spin-quantization bases. It was found that in particular the off-diagonal basis can be useful to distinguish among the chiral tqH couplings. The sensitivity of the unpolarized ILC in probing the couplings at the 3$σ$ level at $\sqrt{s}$ = 500 GeV and L = 500 fb$^{-1}$ is also studied, resulting in predicted BR(t $\rightarrow$ qH) < 1.19 $\times 10^{-3}$. This limit is further improved to BR(t $\rightarrow$ qH) < 8.84 $\times 10^{-4}$ with the inclusion of initial beam polarization of left handed electrons and right handed positrons.

A Detailed Analysis of Flavour-changing Decays of Top Quarks as a Probe of New Physics at the LHC

If the LHC should fail to observe direct signals for new physics, it may become necessary to look for new physics effects in rare events such as flavour-changing decays of the top quark, which, in the Standard Model, are predicted to be too small to be observed. We set up the theoretical framework in which experimentally accessible results can be expected in models of new physics, and go on to discuss two models of supersymmetry -- one with conserved $R$-parity, and one without $R$-parity -- to illustrate how the flavour-changing signals are predicted in these models. In the latter case, there is a distinct possibility of detecting the rare decay $t \to c + Z^0$ at the LHC. We also present a detailed set of very general formulae which can be used to make similar calculations in diverse models of new physics.

Probing Higgs-radion mixing in warped models through complementary searches at the LHC and the ILC

We consider the Higgs-radion mixing in the context of warped space extra dimensional models with custodial symmetry and investigate the prospects of detecting the mixed radion. Custodial symmetries allow the Kaluza-Klein excitations to be lighter, and protect Zbb to be in agreement with experimental constraints. We perform a complementary study of discovery reaches of the Higgs-radion mixed state at the 13 and 14 TeV LHC and at the 500 and 1000 GeV ILC. We carry out a comprehensive analysis of the most significant production and decay modes of the mixed radion in the 80 GeV - 1 TeV mass range, and indicate the parameter space that can be probed at the LHC and the ILC. There exists a region of the parameter space which can be probed, at the LHC, through the diphoton channel even for a relatively low luminosity of 50 fb^{-1}. The reach of the 4-lepton final state, in probing the parameter space is also studied in the context of 14 TeV LHC, for a luminosity of 1000 fb^{-1}. At the ILC, with an integrated luminosity of 500 fb^{-1}, we analyze the Z-radion associated production and the WW fusion production, followed by the radion decay into bb and W+W-. The WW fusion production is favored over the Z-radion associated channel in probing regions of the parameter space beyond the LHC reach. The complementary study at the LHC and the ILC is useful both for the discovery of the radion and the understanding of its mixing sector.

High scale mixing relations as a natural explanation for large neutrino mixing

The origin of small mixing among the quarks and a large mixing among the neutrinos has been an open question in particle physics. In order to answer this question, we postulate general relations among the quarks and the leptonic mixing angles at a high scale, which could be the scale of Grand Unified Theories. The central idea of these relations is that the quark and the leptonic mixing angles can be unified at some high scale either due to some quark-lepton symmetry or some other underlying mechanism and as a consequence, the mixing angles of the leptonic sector are proportional to that of the quark sector. We investigate the phenomenology of the possible relations where the leptonic mixing angles are proportional to the quark mixing angles at the unification scale by taking into account the latest experimental constraints from the neutrino sector. These relations are able to explain the pattern of leptonic mixing at the low scale and thereby hint that these relations could be possible signatures of a quark-lepton symmetry or some other underlying quark-lepton mixing unification mechanism at some high scale linked to Grand Unified Theories.

Invisible decays of low mass Higgs bosons in supersymmetric models

The discovery of a 126 GeV Higgs like scalar at the LHC along with the non observation of the supersymmetric particles, has in turn lead to constraining various supersymmetric models through the Higgs data. We here consider the case of both MSSM, as well its extension containing an additional chiral singlet superfield, NMSSM. We concentrate on the case where we identify the second lightest Higgs boson as the 126 GeV state discovered at the CERN LHC and consider the invisible decays of the low mass Higgs bosons in both MSSM and NMSSM. We find that in case of the MSSM with universal boundary conditions at the GUT scale, it is not possible to have light neutralinos leading to the decay channel $H\rightarrow \tildeχ_1^0 \tildeχ_1^0$. The invisible decay mode is allowed in case of certain $SO(10)$ and $E_6$ grand unified models with large representations and nonuniversal gaugino masses at the GUT scale. In case of the NMSSM, for the parameter space considered it is possible to have the invisible decay channel with universal gaugino masses at the GUT scale. We furthermore consider the most general case, with $M_1$ and $M_2$ as independent parameters for both MSSM and NMSSM. We isolate the regions in parameter space in both cases, where the second lightest Higgs boson has a mass of 126 GeV and then concentrate on the invisible decay of Higgs to lighter neutralinos. The other non-standard decay mode of the Higgs is also considered in detail. The invisible Higgs branching ratio being constrained by the LHC results, we find that in this case with the second lightest Higgs being the 126 GeV state, more data from the LHC is required to constrain the neutralino parameter space, compared to the case when the lightest Higgs boson is the 126 GeV state.

Anomalous Triple Gauge Vertices at the Large Hadron-Electron Collider

At a high energy $ep$ collider, such as the Large Hadron-Electron Collider (LHeC) which is being planned at CERN, one can access the $WWγ$ vertex exclusively in charged current events with a radiated photon, with no interference from the $WWZ$ vertex. We find that the azimuthal angle between the jet and the missing momentum in each charged current event is a sensitive probe of anomalous $WWγ$ couplings, and show that for quite reasonable values of integrated luminosity, the LHeC can extend the discovery reach for these couplings beyond all present experimental bounds.

New Physics in $e^+e^- \rightarrow Z γ$ at the ILC with polarized beams: Explorations beyond conventional anomalous triple gauge boson coupling

One of the most-studied signals for physics beyond the standard model in the production of gauge bosons in electron-positron collisions is that due to the anomalous triple gauge boson couplings in the $Z γ$ final state. In this work, we study the implications of this at the ILC with polarized beams for signals that go beyond traditional anomalous triple neutral gauge boson couplings. Here we report a dimension-8 CP-conserving $Z γZ$ vertex that has not found mention in the literature. We carry out a systematic study of the anomalous couplings in general terms and arrive at a classification. We then obtain linear-order distributions with and without CP violation. Furthermore, we place the study in the context of general BSM interactions represented by $e^+e^- Z γ$ contact interactions. We set up a correspondence between the triple gauge boson couplings and the four-point contact interactions. We also present sensitivities on these anomalous couplings, which will be achievable at the ILC with realistic polarization and luminosity.

Distinguishing Signatures of top-and bottom-type heavy vectorlike quarks at the LHC

An SU(2) vectorlike singlet quark with a charge either +2/3 (t') or -1/3 (b') is predicted in many extensions of the Standard Model. The mixing of these quarks with the top or bottom lead to Flavor Changing Yukawa Interactions and Neutral Current. The decay modes of the heavier mass eigenstates are therefore different from the Standard Model type chiral quarks. The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will provide an ideal environment to look for the signals of these exotic quarks. Considering all decays, including those involving Z- and Yukawa interactions, we show how one can distinguish between t' and b' from ratios of event rates with different lepton multiplicities. The ability to reconstruct the Higgs boson with a mass around 125.5 GeV plays an important role in such differentiation.

Beam polarization effects in the radiative production of lightest neutralinos in $e^+ e^-$ collisions in supersymmetric grand unified models

We study the production of the lightest neutralinos in the process $e^+ e^- \rightarrow χ_1^0 χ_1^0 γ$ in supersymmetric grand unified models for the International Linear Collider Energies with longitudinally polarized beams. We consider cases where the standard model gauge group is unified into the grand unified gauge groups SU(5), or SO(10). We have carried out a comprehensive study of this process in the SU(5) and SO(10) grand unified theories which includes the QED radiative corrections. We compare and contrast the dependence of the signal cross section on the grand unified gauge group, and on the different representations of the grand unified gauge group, when the the electron and positron beams are longitudinally polarized. To assess the feasibility of experimentally observing the radiative production process, we have also considered in detail the background to this process coming from the radiative neutrino production process $e^+ e^- \rightarrow ν\barνγ$ with longitudinally polarized electron and positron beams. In addition we have also considered the supersymmetric background coming from the radiative production of scalar neutrinos in the process $e^+ e^- \rightarrow \tilde ν\tildeν^* γ$ with longitudinally polarized beams. The process can be a major background to the radiative production of neutralinos when the scalar neutrinos decay invisibly.

Invisible decays of the lightest Higgs boson in supersymmetric models

We consider supersymmetric models in which the lightest Higgs scalar can decay invisibly consistent with the constraints on the $126$~GeV state discovered at the CERN LHC. We consider the invisible decay in the minimal supersymmetric standard model~(MSSM), as well its extension containing an additional chiral singlet superfield, the so-called next-to-minimal or nonminimal supersymmetric standard model~(NMSSM).We consider the case of MSSM with both universal as well as nonuniversal gaugino masses at the grand unified scale, and find that only an $E_6$ grand unified model with unnaturally large representation can give rise to sufficiently light neutralinos which can possibly lead to the invisible decay $h^0 \rightarrow \tilde χ_1^0 \tilde χ_1^0$. Following this, we consider the case of NMSSM in detail, where also we find that it is not possible to have the invisible decay of the lightest Higgs scalar with universal gaugino masses at the grand unified scale. We delineate the regions of the NMSSM parameter space where it is possible to have the lightest Higgs boson to have a mass of about $126$ GeV, and then concentrate on the region where this Higgs can decay into light neutralinos, with the soft gaugino masses $M_1$ and $M_2$ as two independent parameters, unconstrained by grand unification. We also consider, simultaneously, the other important invisible Higgs decay channel in the NMSSM, namely the decay into the lightest CP odd scalars, $h_1 \to a_1 a_1$, which is studied in detail. With the invisible Higgs branching ratio being constrained by the present LHC results, we find that $μ_{eff} < 170$~GeV and $M_1 < 80$~GeV is disfavored in NMSSM for fixed values of the other input parameters. The dependence of our results on the parameters of NMSSM is discussed in detail.

Radiative Production of Lightest Neutralinos in $e^+ e^-$ collisions in Supersymmetric Grand Unified Models

We study the production of the lightest neutralinos in the radiative process $e^+e^- \to \tildeχ^0_1 \tildeχ^0_1γ$ in supersymmetric models with grand unification. We consider models wherein the standard model gauge group $SU(3)_c \times SU(2)_L \times U(1)_Y$ is unified into the grand unified gauge groups SU(5), or SO(10). We study this process at energies that may be accessible at a future International Linear Collider. We compare and contrast the dependence of the signal cross section on the grand unified gauge group, and different representations of the grand unified gauge group, into which the standard model gauge group is unified. We carry out a comprehensive study of the radiative production process which includes higher order QED corrections in our calculations. In addition we carry out a detailed study of the background to the signal process coming from the Standard Model radiative neutrino production $e^+e^- \to ν\barνγ$, as well as from the radiative production of the scalar partners of the neutrinos (sneutrinos) $e^+e^- \to \tildeν\tildeν^\ast γ$. The latter can be a major supersymmetric background to the radiative production of neutralinos when the sneutrinos decay invisibly. It is likely that the radiative production of the lightest neutralinos may be a viable channel to study supersymmetric partners of the Standard Model particles at the first stage of a International Linear Collider, where heavier sparticles may be too heavy to be produced in pairs.

Generalized top-spin analysis and new physics in $e^{+} e^{-}$ collisions with beam polarization

A generalized top-spin analysis proposed some time ago in the context of Standard Model and subsequently studied in varying contexts is now applied primarily to the case of $e^+e^-\rightarrow t\bar{t}$ with transversely polarized beams. This extends our recent work with new physics couplings of scalar ($S$) and tensor ($T$) types. We carry out a comprehensive analysis assuming only the electron beam to be transversely polarized, which is sufficient to probe these interactions, and also eliminates any azimuthal angular dependence due to standard model or new physics of vector ($V$) and axial-vector ($A$) type interactions. We then consider new physics of general four-Fermi type of $V$ and $A$ type with both beams transversely polarized and discuss implications with longitudinal polarization as well. The generalized spin bases are all investigated in the presence of either longitudinal or transverse beam polarization to look for appreciable deviation from the SM prediction in case of the new physics. 90% confidence level limits are obtained on the interactions for the generalized spin bases with realistic integrated luminosity. In order to achieve this we present a general discussion based on helicity amplitudes and derive a general transformation matrix that enables us to treat the spin basis. We find that beamline basis combined with transverse polarization provides an excellent window of opportunity both for $S$, $T$ and $V$, $A$ new physics, followed by the off diagonal basis. The helicity basis is shown to be the best in case of longitudinal polarization to look for new physics effectsdue to $V$ and $A$.
