The radial defocusing energy-supercritical nonlinear wave equation in all space dimensions

We consider the defocusing nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu + |u|^p u=0$ with spherically-symmetric initial data in the regime $\frac4{d-2} \frac4{d-2}$. The principal result is that blowup (or failure to scatter) must be accompanied by blowup of the critical Sobolev norm. An equivalent formulation is that maximal-lifespan solutions with bounded critical Sobolev norm are global and scatter.

The defocusing energy-supercritical nonlinear wave equation in three space dimensions

We consider the defocusing nonlinear wave equation $u_{tt}-Δu + |u|^p u=0$ in the energy-supercritical regime p>4. For even values of the power p, we show that blowup (or failure to scatter) must be accompanied by blowup of the critical Sobolev norm. An equivalent formulation is that solutions with bounded critical Sobolev norm are global and scatter. The impetus to consider this problem comes from recent work of Kenig and Merle who treated the case of spherically-symmetric solutions.

On the mass-critical generalized KdV equation

We consider the mass-critical generalized Korteweg--de Vries equation $$(\partial_t + \partial_{xxx})u=\pm \partial_x(u^5)$$ for real-valued functions $u(t,x)$. We prove that if the global well-posedness and scattering conjecture for this equation failed, then, conditional on a positive answer to the global well-posedness and scattering conjecture for the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $(-i\partial_t + \partial_{xx})u=\pm (|u|^4u)$, there exists a minimal-mass blowup solution to the mass-critical generalized KdV equation which is almost periodic modulo the symmetries of the equation. Moreover, we can guarantee that this minimal-mass blowup solution is either a self-similar solution, a soliton-like solution, or a double high-to-low frequency cascade solution.

Energy-supercritical NLS: critical $\dot H^s$-bounds imply scattering

We consider two classes of defocusing energy-supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in dimensions $d\geq 5$. We prove that if the solution $u$ is apriorily bounded in the critical Sobolev space, that is, $u\in L_t^\infty \dot H^{s_c}_x$, then $u$ is global and scatters.

Characterization of minimal-mass blowup solutions to the focusing mass-critical NLS

Let $d\geq 4$ and let $u$ be a global solution to the focusing mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $iu_t+Δu=-|u|^{\frac 4d}u$ with spherically symmetric $H_x^1$ initial data and mass equal to that of the ground state $Q$. We prove that if $u$ does not scatter then, up to phase rotation and scaling, $u$ is the solitary wave $e^{it}Q$. Combining this result with that of Merle \cite{merle2}, we obtain that in dimensions $d\geq 4$, the only spherically symmetric minimal-mass blowup solutions are, up to phase rotation and scaling, the pseudo-conformal ground state and the solitary wave.

The cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in two dimensions with radial data

We establish global well-posedness and scattering for solutions to the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $iu_t + Δu = \pm |u|^2 u$ for large spherically symmetric L^2_x(\R^2) initial data; in the focusing case we require, of course, that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state. As a consequence, we deduce that in the focusing case, any spherically symmetric blowup solution must concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the blowup time. We also establish some partial results towards the analogous claims in other dimensions and without the assumption of spherical symmetry.

The mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation with radial data in dimensions three and higher

We establish global well-posedness and scattering for solutions to the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation $iu_t + Δu = \pm |u|^{4/d} u$ for large spherically symmetric L^2_x(R^d) initial data in dimensions $d\geq 3$. In the focusing case we require that the mass is strictly less than that of the ground state. As a consequence, we obtain that in the focusing case, any spherically symmetric blowup solution must concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the blowup time.

On the blowup for the $L^2$-critical focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation in higher dimensions below the energy class

We consider the focusing mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation and prove that blowup solutions to this equation with initial data in $H^s(\R^d)$, $s > s_0(d)$ and $d\geq 3$, concentrate at least the mass of the ground state at the blowup time. This extends recent work by J. Colliander, S. Raynor, C. Sulem, and J. D. Wright, \cite{crsw}, T. Hmidi and S. Keraani, \cite{hk}, and N. Tzirakis, \cite{tzirakis}, on the blowup of the two-dimensional and one-dimensional mass-critical focusing NLS below the energy space to all dimensions $d\ge 3$.

Minimal-mass blowup solutions of the mass-critical NLS

We consider the minimal mass $m_0$ required for solutions to the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation $iu_t + Δu = μ|u|^{4/d} u$ to blow up. If $m_0$ is finite, we show that there exists a minimal-mass solution blowing up (in the sense of an infinite spacetime norm) in both time directions, whose orbit in $L^2_x(\R^d)$ is compact after quotienting out by the symmetries of the equation. A similar result is obtained for spherically symmetric solutions. Similar results were previously obtained by Keraani, \cite{keraani}, in dimensions 1, 2 and Begout and Vargas, \cite{begout}, in dimensions $d\geq 3$ for the mass-critical NLS and by Kenig and Merle, \cite{merlekenig}, in the energy-critical case. In a subsequent paper we shall use this compactness result to establish global existence and scattering in $L^2_x(\R^d)$ for the defocusing NLS in three and higher dimensions with spherically symmetric data.

Global well-posedness and scattering for the mass-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation for radial data in high dimensions

We establish global well-posedness and scattering for solutions to the defocusing mass-critical (pseudoconformal) nonlinear Schrödinger equation $iu_t + Δu = |u|^{4/n} u$ for large spherically symmetric $L^2_x(\R^n)$ initial data in dimensions $n\geq 3$. After using the reductions in \cite{compact} to reduce to eliminating blowup solutions which are almost periodic modulo scaling, we obtain a frequency-localized Morawetz estimate and exclude a mass evacuation scenario (somewhat analogously to \cite{ckstt:gwp}, \cite{RV}, \cite{thesis:art}) in order to conclude the argument.

Global well-posedness and scattering for a class of nonlinear Schrodinger equations below the energy space

We prove global well-posedness and scattering for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with power-type nonlinearity \begin{equation*} \begin{cases} i u_t +Δu = |u|^p u, \quad \frac{4}{n}<p<\frac{4}{n-2}, u(0,x) = u_0(x)\in H^s(\R^n), \quad n\geq 3, \end{cases} \end{equation*} below the energy space, i.e., for $s<1$. In \cite{ckstt:low7}, J. Colliander, M. Keel, G. Staffilani, H. Takaoka, and T. Tao established polynomial growth of the $H^s_x$-norm of the solution, and hence global well-posedness for initial data in $H^s_x$, provided $s$ is sufficiently close to 1. However, their bounds are insufficient to yield scattering. In this paper, we use the \emph{a priori} interaction Morawetz inequality to show that scattering holds in $H^s(\R^n)$ whenever $s$ is larger than some value $0<s_0(n,p)<1$.

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation with combined power-type nonlinearities

We undertake a comprehensive study of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ i u_t +Δu = λ_1|u|^{p_1} u+ λ_2 |u|^{p_2} u, $$ where $u(t,x)$ is a complex-valued function in spacetime $\R_t\times\R^n_x$, $λ_1$ and $λ_2$ are nonzero real constants, and $0 0$ and $p_1=\frac{4}{n}$, $p_2=\frac{4}{n-2}$. The results at the endpoint $p_1 = \frac{4}{n}$ are conditional on a conjectured global existence and spacetime estimate for the $L^2_x$-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation. As an off-shoot of our analysis, we also obtain a new, simpler proof of scattering in $H^1_x$ for solutions to the nonlinear Schrödinger equation $$ i u_t +Δu = |u|^{p} u, $$ with $\frac{4}{n}<p<\frac{4}{n-2}$, which was first obtained by J. Ginibre and G. Velo, \cite{gv:scatter}.

Stability of energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in high dimensions

We develop the existence, uniqueness, continuity, stability, and scattering theory for energy-critical nonlinear Schrödinger equations in dimensions $n \geq 3$, for solutions which have large, but finite, energy and large, but finite, Strichartz norms. For dimensions $n \leq 6$, this theory is a standard extension of the small data well-posedness theory based on iteration in Strichartz spaces. However, in dimensions $n > 6$ there is an obstruction to this approach because of the subquadratic nature of the nonlinearity (which makes the derivative of the nonlinearity non-Lipschitz). We resolve this by iterating in exotic Strichartz spaces instead. The theory developed here will be applied in a subsequent paper of the second author, to establish global well-posedness and scattering for the defocusing energy-critical equation for large energy data.
