Complete Non-Selfadjointness of Extensions of Symmetric Operators with Bounded Dissipative Perturbations

Using boundary triples, we develop an abstract framework to investigate the complete non-selfadjointness of the maximally dissipative extensions of dissipative operators of the form $S+iV$, where $S$ is symmetric with equal finite defect indices and $V$ is a bounded non-negative operator. Our key example is the dissipative Schr\"odinger operator $-\tfrac{d^2}{dx^2}+\mathrm{i} V$ on the interval.

1-D Schr\"odinger operator on a star graph with nondefinite weight function

On a star graph $G$ with $n = n_+ + n_-$ edges of unit length, we study the operator $-\frac{\mathrm{d}^2}{\mathrm{d} x^2}$ on $n_+$ and $\frac{\mathrm{d}^2}{\mathrm{d} x^2}$ on $n_-$ edges equipped with Dirichlet boundary conditions at the outer vertices and a Kirchhoff condition at the central vertex. We study the spectral properties of the corresponding indefinite Kirchhoff Laplacian on $G$ and we show that it is similar to a selfadjoint operator in the Hilbert space $L^2(G)$ and that its eigenfunctions form a Riesz basis. Furthermore, we give a complete description of the point spectrum.

Scattering theory for difference equations with operator coefficients

We consider a second order difference equation with operator-valued coefficients. More precisely, we study either compact or trace class perturbations of the discrete Laplacian in the Hilbert space of bi-infinite square-summable sequence with entries in a fixed Hilbert space. We discuss its continuous and discrete spectrum, as well as properties of the associated scattering matrix.

On the existence of eigenvalues of a one-dimensional Dirac operator

The aim of this paper is to study the existence of eigenvalues in the gap of the essential spectrum of the one-dimensional Dirac operator in the presence of a bounded potential. We employ a generalized variational principle to prove existence of such eigenvalues, estimate how many eigenvalues there are, and give upper and lower bounds for them.

Spectral inclusions of perturbed normal operators and applications

We consider a normal operator $T$ on a Hilbert space $H$. Under various assumptions on the spectrum of $T$, we give bounds for the spectrum of $T+A$ where $A$ is $T$-bounded with relative bound less than 1 but we do not assume that $A$ is symmetric or normal. If the imaginary part of the spectrum of $T$ is bounded, then the spectrum of $T+A$ is contained in the region between certain hyperbolas whose asymptotic slope depends on the $T$-bound of $A$. If the spectrum of $T$ is contained in a bisector, then the spectrum of $T+A$ is contained in the area between certain rotated hyperbola. The case of infinite gaps in the spectrum of $T$ is studied. Moreover, we prove a stability result for the essential spectrum of $T+A$. If $A$ is even $p$-subordinate to $T$, then we obtain stronger results for the localisation of the spectrum of $T+A$.

Limit point and limit circle trichotomy for Sturm-Liouville problems with complex potentials

The limit point and limit circle classification of real Sturm-Liouville problems by H. Weyl more than 100 years ago was extended by A.R. Sims around 60 years ago to the case when the coefficients are complex. Here, the main result is a collection of various criteria which allow us to decide to which class of Sims' scheme a given Sturm-Liouville problem with complex coefficients belongs. This is subsequently applied to a second order differential equation defined on a ray in $\mathbb C$ which is motivated by the recent intensive research connected with $\mathcal P \mathcal T$-symmetric Hamiltonians.

Calculating the dimension of the universal embedding of the symplectic dual polar space using languages

The main result of this paper is the construction of a bijection of the set of words in so-called standard order of length $n$ formed by four different letters and the set $\mathbb{N}^n$ of all subspaces of a fixed $n$-dimensional maximal isotropic subspace of the $2n$-dimensional symplectic space $V$ over $\mathbb{F}_2$ which are not maximal in a certain sense. Since the number of different words in standard order is known, this gives an alternative proof for the formula of the dimension of the universal embedding of a symplectic dual polar space $\mathcal G_n$. Along the way, we give formulas for the number of all $n$- and $(n-1)$-dimensional totally isotropic subspaces of $V$.

Dirac-Krein systems on star graphs

We study the spectrum of a self-adjoint Dirac-Krein operator with potential on a compact star graph $\mathcal G$ with a finite number $n$ of edges. This operator is defined by a Dirac-Krein differential expression with summable matrix potentials on each edge, by self-adjoint boundary conditions at the outer vertices, and by a self-adjoint matching condition at the common central vertex of $\mathcal G$. Special attention is paid to Robin matching conditions with parameter $τ\in\mathbb R\cup\{\infty\}$. Choosing the decoupled operator with Dirichlet condition at the central vertex as a reference operator, we derive Krein's resolvent formula, introduce corresponding Weyl-Titchmarsh functions, study the multiplicities, dependence on $τ$, and interlacing properties of the eigenvalues, and prove a trace formula. Moreover, we show that, asymptotically for $R\to \infty$, the difference of the number of eigenvalues in the intervals $[0,R)$ and $[-R,0)$ deviates from some integer $κ_0$, which we call dislocation index, at most by $n+2$.

On the density of certain languages with $p^2$ letters

The sequence $(x_n)_{n\in\mathbb N} = (2,5,15,51,187,\dots)$ given by the rule $x_n=(2^n+1)(2^{n-1}+1)/3$ appears in several seemingly unrelated areas of mathematics. For example, $x_n$ is the density of a language of words of length $n$ with four different letters. It is also the cardinality of the quotient of $(\mathbb Z_2\times \mathbb Z_2)^n$ under the left action of the special linear group $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb Z)$. In this paper we show how these two interpretations of $x_n$ are related to each other. More generally, for prime numbers $p$ we show a correspondence between a quotient of $(\mathbb Z_p\times\mathbb Z_p)^n$ and a language with $p^2$ letters and words of length $n$.

On the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator with a singular perturbation

In this paper we investigate the one-dimensional harmonic oscillator with a singular perturbation concentrated in one point. We describe all possible selfadjoint realizations and we show that for certain conditions on the perturbation exactly one negative eigenvalues can arise. This eigenvalue tends to $-\infty$ as the perturbation becomes stronger.

On the Spectral Decomposition of Dichotomous and Bisectorial Operators

For an unbounded operator $S$ on a Banach space the existence of invariant subspaces corresponding to its spectrum in the left and right half-plane is proved. The general assumption on $S$ is the uniform boundedness of the resolvent along the imaginary axis. The projections associated with the invariant subspaces are bounded if $S$ is strictly dichotomous, but may be unbounded in general. Explicit formulas for these projections in terms of resolvent integrals are derived and used to obtain perturbation theorems for dichotomy. All results apply, with certain simplifications, to bisectorial operators.

Sharp eigenvalue enclosures for the perturbed angular Kerr-Newman Dirac operator

A certified strategy for determining sharp intervals of enclosure for the eigenvalues of matrix differential operators with singular coefficients is examined. The strategy relies on computing the second order spectrum relative to subspaces of continuous piecewise linear functions. For smooth perturbations of the angular Kerr-Newman Dirac operator, explicit rates of convergence due to regularity of the eigenfunctions are established. Existing benchmarks are validated and sharpened by several orders of magnitude in the unperturbed setting.

Simplicity of extremal eigenvalues of the Klein-Gordon equation

We consider the spectral problem associated with the Klein-Gordon equation for unbounded electric potentials. If the spectrum of this problem is contained in two disjoint real intervals and the two inner boundary points are eigenvalues, we show that these extremal eigenvalues are simple and possess strictly positive eigenfunctions. Examples of electric potentials satisfying these assumptions are given.

A Variational Principle for Block Operator Matrices and its Application to the Angular Part of the Dirac Operator in Curved Spacetime

The operator associated to the angular part of the Dirac equation in the Kerr-Newman background metric is a block operator matrix with bounded diagonal and unbounded off-diagonal entries. The aim of this paper is to establish a variational principle for block operator matrices of this type and to derive thereof upper and lower bounds for the angular operator mentioned above. In the last section, these analytic bounds are compared to numerical values from the literature.

On the local energy decay of solutions of the Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman metric, I

We investigate the local energy decay of solutions of the Dirac equation in the non-extreme Kerr-Newman metric. First, we write the Dirac equation as a Cauchy problem and define the Dirac operator. It is shown that the Dirac operator is selfadjoint in a suitable Hilbert space. With the RAGE theorem, we show that for each particle its energy located in any compact region outside of the event horizon of the Kerr-Newman black hole decays in the time mean.

Analyticity and Riesz basis property of semigroups associated to damped vibrations

Second order equations of the form $z'' + A_0 z + D z'=0$ in an abstract Hilbert space are considered. Such equations are often used as a model for transverse motions of thin beams in the presence of damping. We derive various properties of the operator matrix $A$ associated with the second order problem above. We develop sufficient conditions for analyticity of the associated semigroup and for the existence of a Riesz basis consisting of eigenvectors and associated vectors of $A$ in the phase space.

Spectral Analysis of Radial Dirac Operators in the Kerr-Newman Metric and its Applications to Time-periodic Solutions

We investigate the existence of time-periodic solutions of the Dirac equation in the Kerr-Newman background metric. To this end, the solutions are expanded in a Fourier series with respect to the time variable $t$ and the Chandrasekhar separation ansatz is applied so that the question of existence of a time-periodic solution is reduced to the solvability of a certain coupled system of ordinary differential equations. First, we prove the already known result that there are no time-periodic solutions in the non-extreme case. Then it is shown that in the extreme case for fixed black hole data there is a sequence of particle masses $(m_N)_{N\in\mathbb N}$ for which a time-periodic solution of the Dirac equation does exist. The period of the solution depends only on the data of the black hole described by the Kerr-Newman metric.
