A posteriori error estimation for the optimal control of time-periodic eddy current problems

This work presents the multiharmonic analysis and derivation of functional type a posteriori estimates of a distributed eddy current optimal control problem and its state equation in a time-periodic setting. The existence and uniqueness of the solution of a weak space-time variational formulation for the optimality system and the forward problem are proved by deriving inf-sup and sup-sup conditions. Using the inf-sup and sup-sup conditions, we derive guaranteed, sharp, and fully computable bounds of the approximation error for the optimal control problem and the forward problem in the functional type a posteriori estimation framework. We present here the first computational results on the derived estimates.

Parameter optimization for low-rank matrix recovery in hyperspectral imaging

An approach to parameter optimization for the low-rank matrix recovery method in hyperspectral imaging is discussed. We formulate an optimization problem with respect to the initial parameters of the low-rank matrix recovery method. The performance for different parameter settings is compared in terms of computational times and memory. The results are evaluated by computing the peak signal-to-noise ratio as a quantitative measure. The potential improvement of the performance of the noise reduction method is discussed when optimizing the choice of the initial values. The optimization method is tested on standard and openly available hyperspectral data sets including Indian Pines, Pavia Centre, and Pavia University.

Optimal heating of an indoor swimming pool

This work presents the derivation of a model for the heating process of the air of a glass dome, where an indoor swimming pool is located in the bottom of the dome. The problem can be reduced from a three dimensional to a two dimensional one. The main goal is the formulation of a proper optimization problem for computing the optimal heating of the air after a given time. For that, the model of the heating process as a partial differential equation is formulated as well as the optimization problem subject to the time-dependent partial differential equation. This yields the optimal heating of the air under the glass dome such that the desired temperature distribution is attained after a given time. The discrete formulation of the optimization problem and a proper numerical method for it, the projected gradient method, are discussed. Finally, numerical experiments are presented which show the practical performance of the optimal control problem and its numerical solution method discussed.

Guaranteed lower bounds for cost functionals of time-periodic parabolic optimization problems

In this paper, a new technique is shown for deriving computable, guaranteed lower bounds of functional type (minorants) for two different cost functionals subject to a parabolic time-periodic boundary value problem. Together with previous results on upper bounds (majorants) for one of the cost functionals, both minorants and majorants lead to two-sided estimates of functional type for the optimal control problem. Both upper and lower bounds are derived for the second new cost functional subject to the same parabolic PDE-constraints, but where the target is a desired gradient. The time-periodic optimal control problems are discretized by the multiharmonic finite element method leading to large systems of linear equations having a saddle point structure. The derivation of preconditioners for the minimal residual method for the new optimization problem is discussed in more detail. Finally, several numerical experiments for both optimal control problems are presented confirming the theoretical results obtained. This work provides the basis for an adaptive scheme for time-periodic optimization problems.

A fast Fourier transform based direct solver for the Helmholtz problem

This paper is devoted to the efficient numerical solution of the Helmholtz equation in a two- or three-dimensional rectangular domain with an absorbing boundary condition (ABC). The Helmholtz problem is discretized by standard bilinear and trilinear finite elements on an orthogonal mesh yielding a separable system of linear equations. The main key to high performance is to employ the Fast Fourier transform (FFT) within a fast direct solver to solve the large separable systems. The computational complexity of the proposed FFT based direct solver is O(N log N) operations. Numerical results for both two- and three-dimensional problems are presented confirming the efficiency of the method discussed.

On the a posteriori error analysis for linear Fokker-Planck models in convection-dominated diffusion problems

This work is aimed at the derivation of reliable and efficient a posteriori error estimates for convection-dominated diffusion problems motivated by a linear Fokker-Planck problem appearing in computational neuroscience. We obtain computable error bounds of the functional type for the static and time-dependent case and for different boundary conditions (mixed and pure Neumann boundary conditions). Finally, we present a set of various numerical examples including discussions on mesh adaptivity and space-time discretisation. The numerical results confirm the reliability and efficiency of the error estimates derived.

Functional a posteriori error estimates for time-periodic parabolic optimal control problems

This paper is devoted to the a posteriori error analysis of multiharmonic finite element approximations to distributed optimal control problems with time-periodic state equations of parabolic type. We derive a posteriori estimates of functional type, which are easily computable and provide guaranteed upper bounds for the state and co-state errors as well as for the cost functional. These theoretical results are confirmed by several numerical tests that show high efficiency of the a posteriori error bounds.

A note on functional a posteriori estimates for elliptic optimal control problems

In this work, new theoretical results on functional type a posteriori estimates for elliptic optimal control problems with control constraints are presented. More precisely, we derive new, sharp, guaranteed and fully computable lower bounds for the cost functional in addition to the already existing upper bounds. Using both, the lower and the upper bounds, we arrive at two-sided estimates for the cost functional. We prove that these bounds finally lead to sharp, guaranteed and fully computable upper estimates for the discretization error in the state and the control of the optimal control problem. First numerical tests are presented confirming the efficiency of the a posteriori estimates derived.

Functional a posteriori error estimates for parabolic time-periodic boundary value problems

The paper is concerned with parabolic time-periodic boundary value problems which are of theoretical interest and arise in different practical applications. The multiharmonic finite element method is well adapted to this class of parabolic problems. We study properties of multiharmonic approximations and derive guaranteed and fully computable bounds of approximation errors. For this purpose, we use the functional a posteriori error estimation techniques earlier introduced by S. Repin. Numerical tests confirm the efficiency of the a posteriori error bounds derived.
