The quadratic assignment problem is easy for Robinsonian matrices with Toeplitz structure

We present a new polynomially solvable case of the Quadratic Assignment Problem in Koopmans-Beckman form $QAP(A,B)$, by showing that the identity permutation is optimal when $A$ and $B$ are respectively a Robinson similarity and dissimilarity matrix and one of $A$ or $B$ is a Toeplitz matrix. A Robinson (dis)similarity matrix is a symmetric matrix whose entries (increase) decrease monotonically along rows and columns when moving away from the diagonal, and such matrices arise in the classical seriation problem.

An alternative proof of a PTAS for fixed-degree polynomial optimization over the simplex

The problem of minimizing a polynomial over the standard simplex is one of the basic NP-hard nonlinear optimization problems --- it contains the maximum clique problem in graphs as a special case. It is known that the problem allows a polynomial-time approximation scheme (PTAS) for polynomials of fixed degree, which is based on polynomial evaluations at the points of a sequence of regular grids. In this paper, we provide an alternative proof of the PTAS property. The proof relies on the properties of Bernstein approximation on the simplex. We also refine a known error bound for the scheme for polynomials of degree three. The main contribution of the paper is to provide new insight into the PTAS by establishing precise links with Bernstein approximation and the multinomial distribution.

An error analysis for polynomial optimization over the simplex based on the multivariate hypergeometric distribution

We study the minimization of fixed-degree polynomials over the simplex. This problem is well-known to be NP-hard, as it contains the maximum stable set problem in graph theory as a special case. In this paper, we consider a rational approximation by taking the minimum over the regular grid, which consists of rational points with denominator $r$ (for given $r$). We show that the associated convergence rate is $O(1/r^2)$ for quadratic polynomials. For general polynomials, if there exists a rational global minimizer over the simplex, we show that the convergence rate is also of the order $O(1/r^2)$. Our results answer a question posed by De Klerk et al. (2013) and improves on previously known $O(1/r)$ bounds in the quadratic case.

Forbidden minor characterizations for low-rank optimal solutions to semidefinite programs over the elliptope

We study a new geometric graph parameter $\egd(G)$, defined as the smallest integer $r\ge 1$ for which any partial symmetric matrix which is completable to a correlation matrix and whose entries are specified at the positions of the edges of $G$, can be completed to a matrix in the convex hull of correlation matrices of $\rank $ at most $r$. This graph parameter is motivated by its relevance to the problem of finding low rank solutions to semidefinite programs over the elliptope, and also by its relevance to the bounded rank Grothendieck constant. Indeed, $\egd(G)\le r$ if and only if the rank-$r$ Grothendieck constant of $G$ is equal to 1. We show that the parameter $\egd(G)$ is minor monotone, we identify several classes of forbidden minors for $\egd(G)\le r$ and we give the full characterization for the case $r=2$. We also show an upper bound for $\egd(G)$ in terms of a new tree-width-like parameter $\sla(G)$, defined as the smallest $r$ for which $G$ is a minor of the strong product of a tree and $K_r$. We show that, for any 2-connected graph $G\ne K_{3,3}$ on at least 6 nodes, $\egd(G)\le 2$ if and only if $\sla(G)\le 2$.

Handelman's hierarchy for the maximum stable set problem

The maximum stable set problem is a well-known NP-hard problem in combinatorial optimization, which can be formulated as the maximization of a quadratic square-free polynomial over the (Boolean) hypercube. We investigate a hierarchy of linear programming relaxations for this problem, based on a result of Handelman showing that a positive polynomial over a polytope with non-empty interior can be represented as conic combination of products of the linear constraints defining the polytope. We relate the rank of Handelman's hierarchy with structural properties of graphs. In particular we show a relation to fractional clique covers which we use to upper bound the Handelman rank for perfect graphs and determine its exact value in the vertex-transitive case. Moreover we show two upper bounds on the Handelman rank in terms of the (fractional) stability number of the graph and compute the Handelman rank for several classes of graphs including odd cycles and wheels and their complements. We also point out links to several other linear and semidefinite programming hierarchies.

Complexity of the positive semidefinite matrix completion problem with a rank constraint

We consider the decision problem asking whether a partial rational symmetric matrix with an all-ones diagonal can be completed to a full positive semidefinite matrix of rank at most $k$. We show that this problem is $\NP$-hard for any fixed integer $k\ge 2$. Equivalently, for $k\ge 2$, it is $\NP$-hard to test membership in the rank constrained elliptope $\EE_k(G)$, i.e., the set of all partial matrices with off-diagonal entries specified at the edges of $G$, that can be completed to a positive semidefinite matrix of rank at most $k$. Additionally, we show that deciding membership in the convex hull of $\EE_k(G)$ is also $\NP$-hard for any fixed integer $k\ge 2$.

The Gram dimension of a graph

The Gram dimension $\gd(G)$ of a graph is the smallest integer $k \ge 1$ such that, for every assignment of unit vectors to the nodes of the graph, there exists another assignment of unit vectors lying in $\oR^k$, having the same inner products on the edges of the graph. The class of graphs satisfying $\gd(G) \le k$ is minor closed for fixed $k$, so it can characterized by a finite list of forbidden minors. For $k\le 3$, the only forbidden minor is $K_{k+1}$. We show that a graph has Gram dimension at most 4 if and only if it does not have $K_5$ and $K_{2,2,2}$ as minors. We also show some close connections to the notion of $d$-realizability of graphs. In particular, our result implies the characterization of 3-realizable graphs of Belk and Connelly \cite{Belk,BC}.

A new graph parameter related to bounded rank positive semidefinite matrix completions

The Gram dimension $\gd(G)$ of a graph $G$ is the smallest integer $k\ge 1$ such that any partial real symmetric matrix, whose entries are specified on the diagonal and at the off-diagonal positions corresponding to edges of $G$, can be completed to a positive semidefinite matrix of rank at most $k$ (assuming a positive semidefinite completion exists). For any fixed $k$ the class of graphs satisfying $\gd(G) \le k$ is minor closed, hence it can characterized by a finite list of forbidden minors. We show that the only minimal forbidden minor is $K_{k+1}$ for $k\le 3$ and that there are two minimal forbidden minors: $K_5$ and $K_{2,2,2}$ for $k=4$. We also show some close connections to Euclidean realizations of graphs and to the graph parameter $ν^=(G)$ of \cite{H03}. In particular, our characterization of the graphs with $\gd(G)\le 4$ implies the forbidden minor characterization of the 3-realizable graphs of Belk and Connelly \cite{Belk,BC} and of the graphs with $ν^=(G) \le 4$ of van der Holst \cite{H03}.

Moment Matrices, Border Bases and Real Radical Computation

In this paper, we describe new methods to compute the radical (resp. real radical) of an ideal, assuming it complex (resp. real) variety is finite. The aim is to combine approaches for solving a system of polynomial equations with dual methods which involve moment matrices and semi-definite programming. While the border basis algorithms of [17] are efficient and numerically stable for computing complex roots, algorithms based on moment matrices [12] allow the incorporation of additional polynomials, e.g., to re- strict the computation to real roots or to eliminate multiple solutions. The proposed algorithm can be used to compute a border basis of the input ideal and, as opposed to other approaches, it can also compute the quotient structure of the (real) radical ideal directly, i.e., without prior algebraic techniques such as Gröbner bases. It thus combines the strength of existing algorithms and provides a unified treatment for the computation of border bases for the ideal, the radical ideal and the real radical ideal.

Computing the Grothendieck constant of some graph classes

Given a graph $G=([n],E)$ and $w\in\R^E$, consider the integer program ${\max}_{x\in \{\pm 1\}^n} \sum_{ij \in E} w_{ij}x_ix_j$ and its canonical semidefinite programming relaxation ${\max} \sum_{ij \in E} w_{ij}v_i^Tv_j$, where the maximum is taken over all unit vectors $v_i\in\R^n$. The integrality gap of this relaxation is known as the Grothendieck constant $\ka(G)$ of $G$. We present a closed-form formula for the Grothendieck constant of $K_5$-minor free graphs and derive that it is at most 3/2. Moreover, we show that $\ka(G)\le \ka(K_k)$ if the cut polytope of $G$ is defined by inequalities supported by at most $k$ points. Lastly, since the Grothendieck constant of $K_n$ grows as $Θ(\log n)$, it is interesting to identify instances with large gap. However this is not the case for the clique-web inequalities, a wide class of valid inequalities for the cut polytope, whose integrality ratio is shown to be bounded by 3.

A new semidefinite programming hierarchy for cycles in binary matroids and cuts in graphs

The theta bodies of a polynomial ideal are a series of semidefinite programming relaxations of the convex hull of the real variety of the ideal. In this paper we construct the theta bodies of the vanishing ideal of cycles in a binary matroid. Applied to cuts in graphs, this yields a new hierarchy of semidefinite programming relaxations of the cut polytope of the graph. If the binary matroid avoids certain minors we can characterize when the first theta body in the hierarchy equals the cycle polytope of the matroid. Specialized to cuts in graphs, this result solves a problem posed by Lovász.

A Sparse Flat Extension Theorem for Moment Matrices

In this note we prove a generalization of the flat extension theorem of Curto and Fialkow for truncated moment matrices. It applies to moment matrices indexed by an arbitrary set of monomials and its border, assuming that this set is connected to 1. When formulated in a basis-free setting, this gives an equivalent result for truncated Hankel operators.

New Limits on Fault-Tolerant Quantum Computation

We show that quantum circuits cannot be made fault-tolerant against a depolarizing noise level of approximately 45%, thereby improving on a previous bound of 50% (due to Razborov). Our precise quantum circuit model enables perfect gates from the Clifford group (CNOT, Hadamard, S, X, Y, Z) and arbitrary additional one-qubit gates that are subject to that much depolarizing noise. We prove that this set of gates cannot be universal for arbitrary (even classical) computation, from which the upper bound on the noise threshold for fault-tolerant quantum computation follows.
