Dipolar optimal control of entangled current states

Quantum state control is a fundamental tool for quantum technologies. In this work, we propose and analyze the use of quantum optimal control to exploit the dipolar interaction of ultracold atoms on a lattice ring, focusing on the generation of selected states with entangled circulation. This scheme requires time-dependent control over the orientation of the magnetic field, a technique that is feasible in ultracold atom laboratories. The system's evolution is driven by just two independent control functions. We describe the symmetry constraints of this approach and numerically test them using the extended Bose-Hubbard model. We find that the proposed control can engineer entangled current states with perfect fidelity across a wide range of systems, and that in the remaining cases, the theoretical upper bounds for fidelity are reached.

Dipolar magnetostirring protocol for three-well atomtronic circuits

We propose a magnetostirring protocol to create persistent currents on an annular system. Under this protocol, polar bosons confined in a three-well ring circuit reach a state with high average circulation. We model the system with an extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian and show that the protocol can create circulation in an atomtronic circuit for a range of tunable parameters. The performance and robustness of this scheme are examined, in particular considering different interaction regimes. We also present a method for predicting the optimal protocol parameters, which improves protocol's scalability and enables its application to systems with large numbers of bosons. This overcomes computational limitations and paves the way for exploring macroscopic quantum phenomena.

Ultracold dipolar bosons trapped in atomtronic circuits

We consider a ring-shaped triple-well potential with few polar bosons with in-plane dipole orientation. By diagonalizing the extended Bose-Hubbard Hamiltonian, we investigate the ground state properties of the system as we rotate the dipole angle and vary the on-site and dipole-dipole interaction strengths. We find that the anisotropic character of the dipolar interactions, as well as the competition between dipole and on-site interactions lead to different ground states and that the entanglement between sites also depends on the number of particles. We further characterize the system by studying the condensed fraction and coherence properties for different polarization angles, highlighting the possible effect of the dipolar interaction as manipulation tool.

Spinor Bose-Einstein condensates subject to current-density interactions

Recently achieved chiral condensates open intriguing avenues for the study of the chiral properties induced by current-density interactions. An attempt to include these features in a spinor system is presented, which gives rise to a nonlinear, effective spin-orbit coupling that emerges from the differential orbital currents, along with constraints in the conserved quantities due to the linear coupling between spin components. Chirality pervades the resulting spectrum of stationary states and their dynamical stability, which are explored in plane waves, dark and bright solitons, and Josephson vortices. Our analytical and numerical results reveal the destabilizing role of polarization and Josephson currents, and support the existence of stable nonlinear states built of linear superpositions of plane waves.

Chiral currents in Bose-Einstein condensates subject to current-density interactions

Persistent currents in quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates become chiral in the presence of current-density interactions. This phenomenon is explored in ultracold atoms loaded in a rotating ring geometry, where diverse current-carrying stationary states are analytically found to generalize previously known solutions to the mean-field equations of motion. Their dynamical stability is tested by numerical simulations that show stable currents for states with both constant and modulated density profiles, while decaying currents appear only beyond a unidirectional velocity threshold. Recent experiments in the field make these states within experimental reach.

Self-bound crystals of antiparallel dipolar mixtures

Recent experiments have created supersolids of dipolar quantum droplets. The resulting crystals lack, however, a genuine cohesive energy and are maintained by the presence of an external confinement, bearing a resemblance to the case of ion Coulomb crystals. We show that a mixture of two antiparallel dipolar condensates allows for the creation of potentially large, self-bound crystals which, resembling ionic crystals in solid-state physics, are maintained by the mutual dipolar attraction between the components, with no need of transversal confinement. This opens intriguing novel possibilities, including three-dimensionally self-bound droplet-ring structures, stripe/labyrinthic patterns, and self-bound crystals of droplets surrounded by an interstitial superfluid, resembling the case of superfluid Helium in porous media.

Shell-shaped condensates with gravitational sag: contact and dipolar interactions

We investigate Bose-Einstein condensates in bubble trap potentials in the presence of a small gravity. In particular, we focus on thin shells and study both contact and dipolar interacting condensates. We first analyze the effects of the anisotropic nature of the dipolar interactions, which already appear in the absence of gravity and are enhanced when the polarization axis of the dipoles and the gravity are slightly misaligned. Then, in the small gravity context, we investigate the dynamics of small oscillations of these thin, shell-shaped condensates triggered either by an instantaneous tilting of the gravity direction or by a sudden change of the gravity strength. This system could be a preliminary stage for realizing a gravity sensor in space laboratories.

Dynamical generation of dark-bright solitons through the domain wall of two immiscible Bose-Einstein condensates

We theoretically investigate the one-dimensional dynamics of a dark soliton in a two-component immiscible mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates with repulsive interactions. We analyze the reflection and transmission of a soliton when it propagates through the domain wall, and we show that a dark-bright soliton can be dynamically generated by the interaction of the dark soliton with the domain wall, outside the regime of parameters where stationary solutions are known to exist. The dynamics of this dark-bright soliton is harmonic like, with a numerical frequency that is in good agreement with the predictions of a semi-analytical model.

Static properties of two linearly coupled discrete circuits

Bosonic two-ring ladders constitute an important class of atomtronic circuits, where coherent current flows not only can offer a new insight into many-body physics, but also can play the role of actual degrees of freedom, and hence allow for a viable implementation of cold-atom based devices and qubit systems. In this work, we exhaustively investigate the ground state properties and the low-lying energy spectrum of two linearly coupled Bose-Hubbard rings. We show that the competition among interactions, intra- and inter-ring hopping processes gives place to a rather rich physical scenario, where Mott-like states and (different kinds of) superfluid-like states emerge. The latter ones depend also on the (in)commensurate filling of the atoms. Our analysis, carried out within a simple analytical framework and by means of the exact numerical diagonalization of the system Hamiltonian, provides one with a rather complete characterization of the static properties of the two-ring ladder, including, but not limited to, coherence, fragmentation, correlations, and entanglement. We complement our investigation by studying how these indicators depend on the commensurability of the total number of bosons with respect to the total number of sites and show that the two stacked rings are always entangled for an odd number of atoms.

Tunneling vortex dynamics in linearly coupled Bose-Hubbard rings

The quantum dynamics of population-balanced fractional vortices and population-imbalanced vortices in an effective two-state bosonic system, made of two coupled discrete circuits with few sites, is addressed within the Bose-Hubbard model. % We show that for low on-site interaction, the tunneling of quantized vortices between the rings performs a coherent, oscillating dynamics connecting current states with chiral symmetry. The vortex-flux transfer dually follows the usual sinusoidal particle current of the Josephson effect, in good agreement with a mean-field approximation. Within such regime, the switch of persistent currents in the rings resembles flux-qubit features, and is feasible to experimental realization. On the contrary, strong interatomic interactions suppress the chiral current and lead the system into fragmented condensation.

Vortices with massive cores in a binary mixture of Bose-Einstein condensates

We analyze a notable class of states relevant to an immiscible bosonic binary mixture loaded in a rotating box-like circular trap, i.e. states where vortices in one species host the atoms of the other species, which thus play the role of massive cores. Within a fully-analytical framework, we calculate the equilibrium distance distinguishing the motion of precession of two corotating massive vortices, the angular momentum of each component, the vortices healing length and the characteristic size of the cores. We then compare these previsions with the measures extracted from the numerical solutions of the associated coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Interestingly, making use of a suitable change of reference frame, we show that vortices drag the massive cores which they host thus conveying them their same motion of precession, but that there is no evidence of tangential entrainment between the two fluids, since the cores keep their orientation constant while orbiting.

Self-bound ultra dilute Bose mixtures within Local Density Approximation

We have investigated self-bound binary ultra dilute bosonic mixtures at zero temperature within Density Functional Theory using a Local Density Approximation. We provide the explicit expression of the Lee-Huang-Yang correction in the general case of heteronuclear mixtures, and investigate the general thermodynamic conditions which lead to the formation of self-bound systems. We have determined the conditions for stability against the evaporation of one component, as well as the mechanical and diffusive spinodal lines. We have also calculated the surface tension of the self-bound state as a function of the inter-species interaction strength. We find that relatively modest changes of the latter result in order-of-magnitude changes in the calculated surface tension. We suggest experimental realizations which might display the metastability and phase separation of the mixture when entering regions of the phase diagram characterized by negative pressures. Finally, we show that these droplets may sustain stable vortex and vortex dimers.

Dynamics of F=1 87Rb condensates at finite temperatures

We investigate the dynamics of a F=1 spinor Bose-Einstein condensate of 87Rb atoms confined in a quasi-one-dimensional trap both at zero and at finite temperature. At zero temperature, we observe coherent oscillations between populations of the various spin components and the formation of multiple domains in the condensate. We study also finite temperature effects in the spin dynamics taking into account the phase fluctuations in the Bogoliubov-de Gennes framework. At finite T, despite complex multidomain formation in the condensate, population equipartition occurs. The length scale of these spin domains seems to be determined intrinsically by nonlinear interactions.

Off-axis vortices in trapped Bose condensed gases: angular momentum and frequency splitting

We consider non centered vortices and their arrays in a cylindrically trapped Bose-Einstein condensate at zero temperature. We study the kinetic energy and the angular momentum per particle in the Thomas Fermi regime and their dependence on the distance of the vortices from the center of the trap. Using a perturbative approach with respect to the velocity-field of the vortices, we calculate to first order the frequency shift of the collective low-lying excitations due to the presence of an off-center vortex or a vortex array, and compare these results with predictions which would be obtained by the application of a simple sum-rule approach, previously found to be very successful for centered vortices. It turns out that the simple sum-rule approach fails for off-centered vortices.
