Non-vanishing $U_{e3}$ and $\cos{2 θ_{23}}$ from a broken $Z_2$ symmetry

It is shown that the neutrino mass matrices in the flavour basis yielding a vanishing $U_{e3}$ are characterized by invariance under a class of $Z_2$ symmetries. A specific $Z_2$ in this class also leads to a maximal atmospheric mixing angle $θ_{23}$. The breaking of that $Z_2$ can be parameterized by two dimensionless quantities, $\e$ and $\e'$; the effects of $\e, \e' \neq 0$ are studied perturbatively and numerically. The induced value of $\ue3$ strongly depends on the neutrino mass hierarchy. We find that $\ue3$ is less than 0.07 for a normal mass hierarchy, even when $\e, \e' \sim 30 %$. For an inverted mass hierarchy $\ue3$ tends to be around 0.1 but can be as large as 0.17. In the case of quasi-degenerate neutrinos, $\ue3$ could be close to its experimental upper bound 0.2. In contrast, $| \cos{2θ_{23}} |$ can always reach its experimental upper bound 0.28. We propose a specific model, based on electroweak radiative corrections in the MSSM, for $\e$ and $\e'$. In that model, both $\ue3$ and $| \cos{2 θ_{23}} |$, could be close to their respective experimental upper bounds if neutrinos are quasi-degenerate.

Quaternion Family Symmetry of Quarks and Leptons

To a first approximation, the quark mixing matrix has $θ^q_{13} = θ^q_{23} = 0$, whereas the lepton mixing matrix has $θ^l_{23} = π/4$. We show how this structure may be understood if the family symmetry is $Q_8$, the quaternion group of eight elements. We find three viable scenarios for the Majorana neutrino mass matrix, each depending on 4 parameters and predicting a specific mass spectrum. The phenomenology of the two Higgs doublets which generate the Yukawa sector is analyzed and testable predictions are derived. We discuss also the closely related model based on $D_4$, the symmetry group of the square.

Seesaw Enhancement of Bi-large Mixing in Two-Zero Textures

The seesaw enhancement of the bi-large mixings are discussed for the two-zero textures of the neutrino mass matrix. There are no large mixings in both Dirac neutrino mass matrix $m_D$ and right-handed Majorana neutrino mass matrix $M_R$, however, the bi-large mixing is realized via the seesaw mechanism. We present twelve sets of $m_D$ and $M_R$ for the seesaw enhancement and discuss the related phenomena, the $μ\to e+γ$ process and the leptogenesis. The decay rate of $μ\to e+γ$ is enough suppressed due to zeros in the Dirac neutrino mass matrix. Six $m_D$ lead to the lepton asymmetry, which can explain the baryon number in the universe. Other six $m_D$ are the real matrices, which give no CP asymmetry. Modified Dirac neutrino mass matrices are also discussed.

Prediction of $U_{e3}$ in Neutrino Mass Matrix with Two Zeros

We have discussed predictions of $|U_{e3}|$ and $J_{CP}$ in the framework of the neutrino mass matrix with two zeros. In the case of the best fit values of $\tan^2θ_{12}$, $\tan^2θ_{23}$, $Δm^2_{\rm sun}$ and $Δm_{\rm atm}^2$, the prediction of $|U_{e3}|$ is $0.11\sim 0.14$. The lower bound of $|U_{e3}|$ is 0.05, which depends on $\tanθ_{12}$ and $\tanθ_{23}$. We have investigated the stability of these predictions taking account of small corrections to zeros, which may come from radiative corrections or off-diagonal elements of the charged lepton massmatrix. The lower bound of $|U_{e3}|$ comes down considerably due to the small corrections to zeros.

Impact of $U_{e3}$ on Neutrino Models

We have discussed the impact of $U_{e3}$ on the model of the neutrino mass matrix. In order to get the small $U_{e3}$, some flavor symmetry is required. Typical two models are investigated. The first one is the model in which the bi-maximal mixing is realized at the symmetric limit. The second one is the texture zeros of the neutrino mass matrix.

Leptogenesis in Neutrino Textures with Two Zeros

The leptogenesis is studied in the neutrino textures with two zeros, which reduce the number of independent phases of the CP violation. The phenomenological favored neutrino textures with two zeros are decomposed into the Dirac neutrino mass matrix and the right-handed Majorana one in the see-saw mechanism. Putting the condition to suppress the $μ\to eγ$ decay enough, the texture zeros of the Dirac neutrino mass matrix are fixed in the framework of the MSSM with right-handed neutrinos. These textures have only one CP violatig phase. The magnitude of each entry of the Dirac mass matrix is determined in order to explain the baryon asymmetry of the universe by solving the Boltzman equations. The relation between the leptogenesis and the low energy CP violation is presented in these textures.

Model of Large Mixing Angle MSW Solution

We have obtained the neutrino mass matrix with the large mixing angle (LMA) MSW solution, $\sin^2 2þ_\odot=0.65\sim 0.97$ and $Δm_{\odot}^2= 10^{-5}\sim 10^{-4}\eV^2$, in the $S_{3L}\times S_{3R}$ flavor symmetry. The structure of our neutrino mass matrix is found to be stable against radiative corrections.

Large Mixing Angle MSW Solution in S_3 Flavor Symmetry

We have investigated phenomenological implications on the neutrino flavor mixings in the $S_{3L}\times S_{3R}$ symmetric mass matrices including symmetry breaking terms. We have shown how to get the large mixing angle MSW solution, $\sin^2 2 þ_\odot=0.65\sim 0.97$ and $Δm_{\odot}^2= 10^{-5}\sim 10^{-4}\eV^2$, in this model. It is found that the structure of the lepton mass matrix in our model is stable against radiative corrections although the model leads to nearly degenerate neutrinos.

Search for CP Violation at a Neutrino Factory in a Four-Neutrino Model

The CP violation effects in long baseline neutrino oscillations are studied in the framework of a four-neutrino model (three active neutrinos and one sterile neutrino). It is assumed that neutrino masses are devided into two nearly degenerate pairs, as indicated by the oscillation data. Approximative analytic expressions are derived for the probability differences $ΔP_{\a\b} \equiv P(ν_α\to ν_β)- P(\barν_α\to \barν_β)$ taking into account the CP violation effect of the Earth's crust. The matter effect is found to be small compared with the genuine CP violation term, in contrast with the three-neutrino model.

Neutrino Masses and Mixings with Flavor Symmetries

Recent atmospheric neutrino data at Super-Kamiokande suggest the large flavor mixing of neutrinos. Models for the lepton mass matrix, which give the near-maximal flavor mixing, are discussed in the three family model. Especially, details of the models with the $S_3$ or O(3) flavor symmetry are studied.

Search for CP Violation with a Neutrino Factory

We have discussed the search of the genuine CP violation in a neutrino factory, in which well known neutrino beams are provided by a high intensity muon storage ring. Both $ΔP(\n_\a \Ar \n_\b)$ and CP odd asymmetry $A_{CP}$ in neutrino oscillations are investigated by taking account of the atmospheric neutrino data and the solar neutrino data. If the large mixing angle MSW solution is taken, the magnitude of $ΔP(\n_e \Ar \n_\m)$ could be 1%. If $s_{13}$ is lower than 0.05 with the maximal CP violating phase, the matter effect is negligible in $ΔP(\n_e \Ar \n_\m)$ and $A_{CP}$. We have proposed how to extract the genuine CP violation effect in the three family scheme from the neutrino oscillation data $ΔP(\n_e \Ar \n_\m)$, $ΔP(\n_\m \Ar \n_e)$ and $ΔP(\n_e \Ar \n_τ)$.

Quark-Lepton Mass Matrices with $U(1)\times Z_2 \times Z_2'$ Flavor Symmetry

The U(1) flavor symmetry explains the large mixing of neutrinos while it leads to the unique texture for the quark mass matrices. It is remarked that U(1) symmetric mass matrices have the phenomenological defects. In the quark sector, the mixing $V_{ub}$ is predicted to be large compared with the expected value $ł^4$ at the GUT scale. In the lepton sector, U(1) charges, which give a large mixing in the neutrino sector, also lead to the large one in the charged lepton sector. In the viewpoint of the flavor symmetry, this is an unpleasant feature because the neutrino mass hierarchy is determined only by unknown coefficients of ${\cal O}(1)$, and the near-maximal flavor mixing is not guaranteed in the case of both large angle rotations. These defects disappear by introducing additional discrete symmetries $Z_2\times Z_2'$. The $U(1)\times Z_2\times Z_2'$ quark-lepton mass matrices are presented by taking account of the recent data of atmospheric neutrinos and solar neutrinos.

Vacuum Neutrino Oscillations of Solar Neutrinos and Lepton Mass Matrices

We consider the case that the solar neutrino deficit is due to the vacuum oscillation. The lepton mass matrices with nearly bi-maximal mixings are needed in order to explain both solar and atmospheric neutrino deficit. A texture with the symmetry of flavour democracy or $S_3$ has been investigated by taking account of the symmetry breaking terms of the charged lepton mass matrix. It is found that predicted mixings can be considerably changed from the neutrino mixings $\sin^2 2þ_\odot\simeq 1$ and $\sin^2 2þ_{\rm atm}\simeq 8/9$ at the symmetric limit. The correlation between $|U_{e3}|$ and $|U_{e1}U_{e2}^*|$ is also presented. The test of the model is discussed by focusing on the three flavor analyses in the solar neutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos and long baseline experiments.

Large Neutrino Flavor Mixings and Lepton Mass Matrices

Recent atmospheric neutrino data at Super-Kamiokande suggest the near-maximal flavor mixing. Models for the lepton mass matrix, which give the near-maximal flavor mixing, are discussed in this report. Mass matrix models are classified according to the mechanism providing the large flavor mixing, and those are reviewed briefly. "Naturalness" of the mass matrix is also discussed in order to select the neutrino mass matrix. Details of the mass matrix with the $S_3$ flavor symmetry are presented.

Natural Neutrino Mass Matrix

Naturalness of the neutrino mass hierarchy and mixing is studied. First we select among 12 neutrino mixing patterns a few patterns, which could form the natural neutrino mass matrix. Further we show that if the Dirac neutrino mass matrix is taken as the natural one in the quark sector, then only two mixing patterns without the large mixing lead to the natural right-handed Majorana mass matrix. The rest of the chosen patterns with three degenerate mass solution lead to the unnatural right-handed Majorana mass matrix in the see-saw mechanism. Notice however, that for the chosen two natural patterns there could be a huge mass hierarchy such as ${\cal O}(10^{4\sim 6})$ in order to reproduce the inverse mass hierarchy of the light neutrinos.

Indirect Search for CP Violation in Neutrino Oscillations

We propose the indirect search for the CP violating phase in the long baseline $\n_\m \Ar\n_e$ oscillation experiment, in which two scenarios of the neutrino mass hierarchy are discussed in the three family model. The CP violatig phase effect is clearly found in the scenario: the LSND data plus the atmospheric neutrino deficit. The phase dependence of the oscillation probability is explicitly shown by using typical parameters of the K2K experiment. The matter effect is negligibly small. In order to select the scenario of the neutrino mass hierarchy, the measurement of the $\n_e\Ar\n_τ$ oscillation is also proposed in the long baseline experiment.

NNI Quark-Lepton Mass Matrices in SUSY SU(5) GUT

We propose the Fritzsch-Branco-Silva-Marcos type fermion mass matrix, which is a typical texture in the nearest-neighbor interaction form, in SU(5) GUT. By evolution of the mass matrices with SU(5) GUT relations in the minimal SUSY standard model, we obtain predictions for the unitarity triangle of CP violation as well as the quark flavor mixing angles, which are consistent with experimental data, in the case of \tanβ\simeq 3.
