Quantum Loewner evolution in quantum natural time: phases and Markov properties

Quantum Loewner evolution (QLE)$(\gamma^2, \eta)$ is a family of growth processes in random environments, introduced by Miller and Sheffield (arXiv:1312.5745) as candidate scaling limits of growth processes (such as diffusion-limited aggregation) on random planar maps. The random environments are Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surfaces with parameter $\gamma$, and the parameter $\eta$ plays a role analogous to that in dielectric breakdown models. Their construction applies to pairs $(\gamma^2, \eta)$ lying on a curve in parameter space, and the associated time parametrization is independent of the underlying LQG surface. In later work (arXiv:1507.00719), they defined a quantum natural time variant of QLE$(8/3, 0)$ whose time parametrization encodes a notion of distance in the LQG geometry, leading to the identification of $\sqrt{8/3}$-LQG with the Brownian map. In this paper we construct quantum natural time QLE$(\gamma^2, \eta)$ for a different but overlapping subset of the same parameter curve. Its time parametrization conjecturally corresponds to the scaling limit of time parametrizations of discrete growth processes on random planar maps. We prove that it exhibits three phases, mirroring those of Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE); this answers a question of Miller and Sheffield for quantum natural time QLE. Moreover, we establish stationarity of the unexplored surface and, in the relevant phases, identify the random surfaces cut out or swallowed by the process as quantum disks. Our construction builds on recent radial LQG-SLE coupling results of Ang and Yu (arXiv:2309.05176, arXiv:2411.19810).

Exact solution of three-point functions in critical loop models

We propose an exact formula for three-point functions on the sphere in critical loop models with primary fields $V_{(r,s)}$ characterized by $2r$ legs and a parameter \(s\) that describes diagonal fields for $r=0$ and the momentum of legs for $r>0$. We demonstrate its validity in three ways: the conformal bootstrap method for 4-point functions, a transfer-matrix study of the lattice model, and a probabilistic method based on conformal loop ensemble and Liouville quantum gravity. This work provides a crucial missing piece for solving critical loop models and reveals a deep unity between three fundamental approaches to 2D statistical physics: transfer matrix, conformal field theory, and probability theory.

The $p$-$\theta$ relation in mating of trees and its application to skew Brownian permutons

In the mating-of-trees approach to Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) and Liouville quantum gravity (LQG), it is natural to consider two pairs of correlated Brownian motions coupled together. This arises in the scaling limit of bipolar-orientation-decorated planar maps (Gwynne-Holden-Sun, 2016) and in the related skew Brownian permuton studied by Borga et al. There are two parameters that can be used to index the coupling between the two pairs of Brownian motions, denoted as $p$ and $\theta$ in the literature: $p$ describes the Brownian motions, whereas $\theta$ describes the SLE curves on LQG surfaces. In this paper, we derive an exact relation between the two parameters and demonstrate its application to computing statistics of the skew Brownian permuton. Our derivation relies on the synergy between mating-of-trees and Liouville conformal field theory (LCFT), where the boundary three-point function in LCFT provide the exact solvable inputs.

Radial conformal welding in Liouville quantum gravity

The seminal work of Sheffield showed that when random surfaces called Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) are conformally welded, the resulting interface is Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE). This has been proved for a variety of configurations, and has applications to the scaling limits of random planar maps and the solvability of SLE and Liouville conformal field theory. We extend the theory to the setting where two sides of a canonical three-pointed LQG surface are conformally welded together, resulting in a radial SLE curve which can be described by imaginary geometry.

SLE Loop Measure and Liouville Quantum Gravity

As recently shown by Holden and two of the authors, the conformal welding of two Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) disks produces a canonical variant of SLE curve whose law is called the SLE loop measure. In this paper, we demonstrate how LQG can be used to study the SLE loop measure. Firstly, we show that for $\kappa\in (8/3,8)$, the loop intensity measure of the conformal loop ensemble agrees with the SLE loop measure as defined by Zhan (2021). The former was initially considered by Kemppainen and Werner (2016) for $\kappa\in (8/3,4]$, and the latter was constructed for $\kappa\in (0,8)$. Secondly, we establish a duality for the SLE loop measure between $\kappa$ and $16/\kappa$. Thirdly, we obtain the exact formula for the moment of the electrical thickness for the shape (probability) measure of the SLE loop, which in the regime $\kappa\in (8/3,8)$ was conjectured by Kenyon and Wilson (2004). This relies on the exact formulae for the reflection coefficient and the one-point disk correlation function in Liouville conformal field theory. Finally, we compute several multiplicative constants associated with the SLE loop measure, which are not only of intrinsic interest but also used in our companion paper relating the conformal loop ensemble to the imaginary DOZZ formulae.

Boundary touching probability and nested-path exponent for non-simple CLE

The conformal loop ensemble (CLE) has two phases: for $\kappa \in (8/3, 4]$, the loops are simple and do not touch each other or the boundary; for $\kappa \in (4,8)$, the loops are non-simple and may touch each other and the boundary. For $\kappa\in(4,8)$, we derive the probability that the loop surrounding a given point touches the domain boundary. We also obtain the law of the conformal radius of this loop seen from the given point conditioned on the loop touching the boundary or not, refining a result of Schramm-Sheffield-Wilson (2009). As an application, we exactly evaluate the CLE counterpart of the nested-path exponent for the Fortuin-Kasteleyn (FK) random cluster model recently introduced by Song-Tan-Zhang-Jacobsen-Nienhuis-Deng (2022). This exponent describes the asymptotic behavior of the number of nested open paths in the open cluster containing the origin when the cluster is large. For Bernoulli percolation, which corresponds to $\kappa=6$, the exponent was derived recently in Song-Jacobsen-Nienhuis-Sportiello-Deng (2023) by a color switching argument. For $\kappa\neq 6$, and in particular for the FK-Ising case, our formula appears to be new. Our derivation begins with Sheffield's construction of CLE from which the quantities of interest can be expressed by radial SLE. We solve the radial SLE problem using the coupling between SLE and Liouville quantum gravity, along with the exact solvability of Liouville conformal field theory.

Conformal welding of quantum disks and multiple SLE: the non-simple case

Two-pointed quantum disks with a weight parameter $W>0$ is a canonical family of finite-volume random surfaces in Liouville quantum gravity. We extend the conformal welding of quantum disks in [AHS23] to the non-simple regime, and give a construction of the multiple SLE associated with any given link pattern for $\kappa\in(4,8)$. Our proof is based on connections between SLE and Liouville conformal field theory (LCFT), where we show that in the conformal welding of multiple forested quantum disks, the surface after welding can be described in terms of LCFT, and the random conformal moduli contains the SLE partition function for the interfaces as a multiplicative factor. As a corollary, for $\kappa\in(4,8)$, we prove the existence of the multiple SLE partition functions, which are smooth functions satisfying a system of PDEs and conformal covariance.

Cutting $\gamma$-Liouville quantum gravity by Schramm-Loewner evolution for $\kappa \not\in \{\gamma^2, 16/\gamma^2\}$

There are many deep and useful theorems relating Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE$_\kappa$) and Liouville quantum gravity ($\gamma$-LQG) in the case when the parameters satisfy $\kappa \in \{\gamma^2, 16/\gamma^2\}$. Roughly speaking, these theorems say that the SLE$_\kappa$ curve cuts the $\gamma$-LQG surface into two or more independent $\gamma$-LQG surfaces. We extend these theorems to the case when $\kappa \not\in \{\gamma^2, 16/\gamma^2\}$. Roughly speaking we show that if we have an appropriate variant of SLE$_\kappa$ and an independent $\gamma$-LQG disk, then the SLE curve cuts the LQG disk into two or more $\gamma$-LQG surfaces which are conditionally independent given the values along the SLE curve of a certain collection of auxiliary imaginary geometry fields, viewed modulo conformal coordinate change. These fields are sampled independently from the SLE and the LQG and have the property that that the sum of the central charges associated with the SLE$_\kappa$ curve, the $\gamma$-LQG surface, and the auxiliary fields is 26. This condition on the central charge is natural from the perspective of bosonic string theory. We also prove analogous statements when the SLE curve is replaced by, e.g., an LQG metric ball or a Brownian motion path. Statements of this type were conjectured by Sheffield and are continuum analogs of certain Markov properties of random planar maps decorated by two or more statistical physics models. We include a substantial list of open problems.

Reversibility of whole-plane SLE for $\kappa > 8$

Whole-plane SLE$_\kappa$ is a random fractal curve between two points on the Riemann sphere. Zhan established for $\kappa \leq 4$ that whole-plane SLE$_\kappa$ is reversible, meaning invariant in law under conformal automorphisms swapping its endpoints. Miller and Sheffield extended this to $\kappa \leq 8$. We prove whole-plane SLE$_\kappa$ is reversible for $\kappa > 8$, resolving the final case and answering a conjecture of Viklund and Wang. Our argument depends on a novel mating-of-trees theorem of independent interest, where Liouville quantum gravity on the disk is decorated by an independent radial space-filling SLE curve.

Supercritical Liouville quantum gravity and CLE$_4$

We establish the first relationship between Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) and Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) in the supercritical (a.k.a. strongly coupled) phase, which corresponds to central charge values $\mathbf c_{\mathrm L} \in (1,25)$ or equivalently to complex values of $\gamma$ with $|\gamma|=2$. More precisely, we introduce a canonical supercritical LQG surface with the topology of the disk. We then show that for each $\mathbf c_{\mathrm L} \in (1,25)$ there is a coupling of this LQG surface with a conformal loop ensemble with parameter $\kappa=4$ (CLE$_4$) wherein the LQG surfaces parametrized by the regions enclosed by the CLE$_4$ loops are conditionally independent supercritical LQG disks given their boundary lengths. In this coupling, the CLE$_4$ is neither determined by nor independent from the LQG. Guided by our coupling result, we exhibit a combinatorially natural family of loop-decorated random planar maps whose scaling limit we conjecture to be the supercritical LQG disk coupled to CLE$_4$. We include a substantial list of open problems.

Critical Liouville quantum gravity and CLE$_4$

Consider a critical ($\gamma=2$) Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) disk together with an independent conformal loop ensemble (CLE) with parameter $\kappa=4$. We show that the critical LQG surfaces parametrized by the regions enclosed by the CLE$_4$ loops are conditionally independent critical LQG disks given the LQG lengths of the loops. We also show that the joint law of the LQG lengths of the loops is described in terms of the jumps of a certain $3/2$-stable process. Our proofs are via a limiting argument based on the analogous statements for $\gamma \in (\sqrt{8/3},2)$ and $\kappa = \gamma^2 \in (8/3,4)$ which were proven by Miller, Sheffield, and Werner (2020). Our results are used in the construction of a coupling of supercritical LQG with CLE$_4$ in another paper by the same authors.

Derivation of all structure constants for boundary Liouville CFT

We prove that the probabilistic definition of the most general boundary three-point and bulk-boundary structure constants in Liouville conformal field theory (LCFT) agree respectively with the formula proposed by Ponsot-Techsner (2002) and by Hosomichi (2001). These formulas also respectively describe the fusion kernel and modular kernel of the Virasoro conformal blocks, which are important functions in various contexts of mathematical physics. As an intermediate step, we obtain the formula for the boundary reflection coefficient of LCFT proposed by Fateev-Zamolodchikov-Zamolodchikov (2000). Our proof relies on the boundary Belavin-Polyakov-Zamolodchikov differential equation recently proved by the first named author, and inputs from the coupling theory of Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) and Schramm Loewner evolution. Our results supply all the structure constants needed to perform the conformal bootstrap for boundary LCFT. They also yield exact descriptions for the joint law of the area and boundary lengths of basic LQG surfaces, including quantum triangles and two-pointed quantum disks.

Liouville conformal field theory and the quantum zipper

Sheffield showed that conformally welding a $\gamma$-Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) surface to itself gives a Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) curve with parameter $\kappa = \gamma^2$ as the interface, and Duplantier-Miller-Sheffield proved similar results for $\kappa = \frac{16}{\gamma^2}$ for $\gamma$-LQG surfaces with boundaries decorated by looptrees of disks or by continuum random trees. We study these dynamics for LQG surfaces coming from Liouville conformal field theory (LCFT). At stopping times depending only on the curve, we give an explicit description of the surface and curve in terms of LCFT and SLE. This has applications to both LCFT and SLE. We prove the boundary BPZ equations for LCFT, a crucial input for subsequent work with Remy, Sun and Zhu deriving the structure constants of boundary LCFT. With Yu we prove the reversibility of whole-plane SLE$_\kappa$ for $\kappa > 8$ via a novel radial mating-of-trees, and will show the space of LCFT surfaces is closed under conformal welding.

Quantum triangles and imaginary geometry flow lines

We define a three-parameter family of random surfaces in Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) which can be viewed as the quantum version of triangles. These quantum triangles are natural in two senses. First, by our definition they produce the boundary three-point correlation functions of Liouville conformal field theory on the disk. Second, it turns out that the laws of the triangles bounded by flow lines in imaginary geometry coupled with LQG are given by these quantum triangles. In this paper we demonstrate the second point for boundary flow lines on a quantum disk. Our method has the potential to prove general conformal welding results with quantum triangles glued in an arbitrary way. Quantum triangles play a basic role in understanding the integrability of SLE and LQG via conformal welding. In this paper, we deduce integrability results for chordal SLE with three force points, using the conformal welding of a quantum triangle and a two-pointed quantum disk. In a subsequent work we will explore their applications to the mating-of-trees framework of LQG, including the exact evaluation of the expected proportion of inversions in skew Brownian permutons.

The SLE loop via conformal welding of quantum disks

We prove that the SLE$_\kappa$ loop measure arises naturally from the conformal welding of two $\gamma$-Liouville quantum gravity (LQG) disks for $\gamma^2 = \kappa \in (0,4)$. The proof relies on our companion work on conformal welding of LQG disks and uses as an essential tool the concept of uniform embedding of LQG surfaces. Combining our result with work of Gwynne and Miller, we get that random quadrangulations decorated by a self-avoiding polygon converge in the scaling limit to the LQG sphere decorated by the SLE$_{8/3}$ loop. Our result is also a key input to recent work of the first and third coauthors on the integrability of the conformal loop ensemble.

The moduli of annuli in random conformal geometry

We obtain exact formulae for three basic quantities in random conformal geometry that depend on the modulus of an annulus. The first is for the law of the modulus of the Brownian annulus describing the scaling limit of uniformly sampled planar maps with annular topology, which is as predicted from the ghost partition function in bosonic string theory. The second is for the law of the modulus of the annulus bounded by a loop of a simple conformal loop ensemble (CLE) on a disk and the disk boundary. The formula is as conjectured from the partition function of the O$(n)$ loop model on the annulus derived by Saleur-Bauer (1989) and Cardy (2006). The third is for the annulus partition function of the SLE$_{8/3}$ loop introduced by Werner (2008), {confirming another} prediction of Cardy (2006). The physics principle underlying our proofs is that 2D quantum gravity coupled with conformal matters can be decomposed into three conformal field theories (CFT): the matter CFT, the Liouville CFT, and the ghost CFT. At the technical level, we rely on two types of integrability in Liouville quantum gravity, one from the scaling limit of random planar maps, the other from the Liouville CFT.

Integrability of Conformal Loop Ensemble: Imaginary DOZZ Formula and Beyond

The scaling limit of the probability that $n$ points are on the same cluster for 2D critical percolation is believed to be governed by a conformal field theory (CFT). Although this is not fully understood, Delfino and Viti (2010) made a remarkable prediction on the exact value of a properly normalized three-point probability. It is expressed in terms of the imaginary DOZZ formula of Schomerus, Zamolodchikov and Kostov-Petkova, which extends the structure constants of minimal model CFTs to continuous parameters. Later, similar conjectures were made for scaling limits of random cluster models and O$(n)$ loop models, representing certain three-point observables in terms of the imaginary DOZZ formula. Since the scaling limits of these models can be described by the conformal loop ensemble (CLE), such conjectures can be formulated as exact statements on CLE observables. In this paper, we prove Delfino and Viti's conjecture on percolation as well as a conjecture of Ikhlef, Jacobsen and Saleur (2015) on the nesting loop statistics of CLE. Our proof is based on the coupling between CLE and Liouville quantum gravity on the sphere, and is inspired by the fact that after reparametrization, the imaginary DOZZ formula is the reciprocal of the three-point function of Liouville CFT. Recently, Nivesvivat, Jacobsen and Ribault systematically studied a CFT with a large class of CLE observables as its correlation functions, including the ones from these two conjectures. We believe that our framework admits sufficient flexibility to exactly solve the three-point functions for CLE observables with natural geometric interpretations, including those from this CFT. As a demonstration, we solve the case corresponding to three points lying on the same loop, where the answer is a variant of the imaginary DOZZ formula.

Integrability of SLE via conformal welding of random surfaces

We demonstrate how to obtain integrable results for the Schramm-Loewner evolution (SLE) from Liouville conformal field theory (LCFT) and the mating-of-trees framework for Liouville quantum gravity (LQG). In particular, we prove an exact formula for the law of a conformal derivative of a classical variant of SLE called $\mathrm{SLE}_\kappa(\rho_-;\rho_+)$. Our proof is built on two connections between SLE, LCFT, and mating-of-trees. Firstly, LCFT and mating-of-trees provide equivalent but complementary methods to describe natural random surfaces in LQG. Using a novel tool that we call the uniform embedding of an LQG surface, we extend earlier equivalence results by allowing fewer marked points and more generic singularities. Secondly, the conformal welding of these random surfaces produces SLE curves as their interfaces. In particular, we rely on the conformal welding results proved in our companion paper [AHS20]. Our paper is an essential part of a program proving integrability results for SLE, LCFT, and mating-of-trees based on these two connections.
